Grassella Oliphant QuartetteGrass Roots ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good ... $14.99
One of the few albums ever cut by drummer Grassella Oliphant – a soulful smoker that really shows the hip approach to jazz on Atlantic Records in the 60s! The album's got a tight groove that comes from superb efforts from a great quartet – Oliphant's drums in the lead, plus tenor from Harold Ousley, vibes from Bobby Hutcherson, and bass from Ray McKinney! Both Hutcherson and Ousley shine on the album – bringing in a sense of soul and spirit that go beyond even Grasella's other album for Atlantic – and the tunes are a mixture of Ousley originals that are totally great, plus some fresh versions of older favorites. The group's approach is very youthful and filled with warm imagination – and titles include "Haitian Lady", "Mrs. O", "The Descendant", "Step Lightly", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "One For The Masses".
