✨✧ Gene DeitchCat On A Hot Thin Groove – 78rpm Artwork From Record Changer Magazine (softcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2013. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing collection of 40s and 50s jazz drawings by Gene Deitch – the complete anthology of his work for legendary jazz magazine Record Changer! Gene was an amazing artist and cartoonist, whose work helped solidify the legacies of some of the most famous cartoon characters in the American pop culture canon – from Popeye, to Tom & Jerry and beyond – but we're especially in love with his jazz-centric Record Changer era! Gene adored jazz and his love for it really shows! Cat On A Hot Thin Groove includes all of his magazine covers, cartoon panels and other bits from Record Changer – versatile work that ranges from fun, cartoon-y panels of "Jazz Cat" characters, to more elaborate and abstract illustrations. Wonderful, vital stuff – and it's very nicely anthologized here by Fantagraphics! Coffee-table scale paperback – 160+ pages of prime Deitch jazzy drawings with text accompaniment. Book

Lorenzo Mattotti & Jorge ZentnerCrackle Of The Frost (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2012. New Copy ... $4.99 19.99
A beautiful graphic novel from the brush of Lorenzo Mattotti – an artist we first fell in love with for his groundbreaking Fires book back in the 80s, still very much at the top of his game here! The text is penned by Jorge Zentner, and the book marks the first English translation of any of his work – but to us, the real draw is Mattotti – whose images sit like these beautiful little color paintings, two to a page – balanced with the text to draw the lovely, personal story forward with care and class that are unsurpassed in publications of this nature. The book is 118 pages, full color, and hardcover. Book

✨✧ Jacques BoyreauSuperTrash – Hermaphro Chic, Movie Fetish, 21st Century Anxiety ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A book that's way more compelling than you'd guess from the title and the cover – especially if you love the lower-reaches of pop culture from the 70s! The book features an essay by the author, but is primarily a random combination of images from a huge host of lesser-known material from the late 60s through the early 80s – b-movie posters, comic book covers, weird advertisements, strange drawings, and more – all laid out with little in the way of explanation, at a page-by-page juxtaposition that makes the whole thing even more startling overall! There's so much unusual stuff here – Cliff Robertson movies we hardly remember at all, beautiful horror magazine covers, and lots more – plus some shots of this material laid out in a Super Trash gallery show. 222 pages, softcover, and full color. ✨✧ Frank StackFoolbert Funnies – Histories & Other Fictions ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full collection of work from underground comix pioneer Frank Stack – an artist who arguably created the first ever underground comic, and whose work appeared in a variety of publications over the years – from National Lampoon, to some of Harvey Pekar's most compelling stories! Stack has a style that's cartoony, but surprisingly pointed – more Jules Feiffer, than the goony style of some of his underground contemporaries – and very well-suited to the subject matter he chooses to portray especially some of his more political material. The large book features work from Blab, Drawn & Quarterly, National Lampoon, Mineshaft, Weirdo, and Ripoff Press – and the book is black and white, 224 pages, softcover. Book

✨✧ John BensonConfessions, Romances, Secrets & Temptations – Archer St John & The St John Romance Comics ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A short book on a short-lived but important comic book publisher of the postwar years – the great St John imprint, which was home to some of the more mature material of the time! The company is known both for its groundbreaking work in the romance comics field, and for its stunning artists – who include the legendary Matt Baker – and the author serves up the book in a series of interviews with creative talents – illuminating their own contributions, and providing especially great details of those who passed all too soon – including Baker and publisher Archer St John. The book has images from comics all the way through, all in black and white – and the whole thing's a great read if you love the behind the scenes stories of comic creation as much as we do. Softcover, 112 pages, with black and white images throughout. Book

✨✧ Pat ThomasDid It – From Yippie To Yuppie – Jerry Rubin An American Revolutionary (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly beautiful book on the famous 60s radical Jerry Rubin – one that's not only the first-ever look at the man's life, politics, and influence – but one that's also presented in a lavishly visual style that really conveys the crossroads of art and ideas of which Rubin was a key part! The book is even better than Pat Thomas' previous book, Listen Whitey – and has the same heavily visual feel as that one – as words from Rubin and his contemporaries are mixed with larger historical information, an incredible amount of cultural sidebars – and hundreds of fantastic images from the 60s onwards. Rubin's known as one of the founding fathers of the yippies – the Youth International Party, which gave political focus to the freedoms of hippies, and was a key part of the protests in Chicago in 1968. But the man's also had a much larger, even more colorful life – and this book really gets at all of that, and then some – one of those rare cases where you pick up a book on someone, and actually find yourself far more illuminated than before – both in terms of the subject, and their larger cultural role. 253 very vivid pages, hardcover, and done in the best Fantagraphics style.
