EthiopiansEngine 54 (180 gram gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
A rocksteady classic from The Ethiopians – but a set that also has plenty more going on as well! The duo work here as a Jamaican counterpart to American soul groups – one of the first and best to hit the Kingston scene – but they also open themselves up to lots of other ideas in the process, and sometimes lay back vocally to just let the album open up and groove! Harmonies are The Ethiopians' strongest calling card – but they're often first directed by the rhythms, then slide in to warm things up and give a larger presence to the slow-stepping, midtempo grooves – all delivered with a classic Kingston head-nodding approach. The album's a key genre-building moment in Jamaican music – and titles include the classic "Train To Skaville", plus "Engine 54", "My Love", "You Got The Dough", "Woman's World", "Long Time Now", and "Unchanged Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Numbered limited edition of 750 copies – on gold vinyl!)

✨✧ Phillip FrazerCome Ethiopians (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Freedom Sounds/Patate (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Righteous roots work from the 80s scene – a set that's done with a warmly bubbling vibe that's mighty nice – maybe a bit more old school than so many other productions of the time, and given a really spacious mixing job, thanks to work from Prince Jammy and Scientist! Yet neither of those talents take things too far – just open up the edges of the sound to let the message of Phillip Frazer flow strongly – set to riffing guitar from Chinna Smith, punctuated by organ lines from Jah McKaya – on titles that include "Great Pain We Feel", "Children Of God", "Come Ethiopians", "Righteous Works", "2000 Years", and "Africa". This edition features bonus cuts – "Black Rose", "Ethiopians Dub", "John Saw Them Coming In Disco Style", and "Troubles In Disco Style". LP, Vinyl record album

Derrick Harriott & The CrystalitesUndertaker (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 24.99
A massive package – the full rare Undertaker album from Derrick Harriott & The Crystalites, plus an insane amount of bonus tracks too! The core album is instrumental – a wicked set of rhythms from The Crystalites, a group who have a vibe that's right up there with the best of the late 60s Kingston scene, but a groove that's definitely their own – almost a razor's edge to some of the rhythms, as they snap through some excellent late rocksteady/early reggae modes! Harriott produced, and adds in all these cool touches and sounds that almost predate some of the later experimental modes of Lee Scratch Perry. Titles include "The Undertaker", "Bombshell", "Biafra", "The Bad", "Lady Madonna", "Fistful Of Dollars", "The Barefoot Brigade", and "Dr Who". 2CD set features 14 more instrumental tracks from The Crystalites – plus 27 more Harriott-produced numbers, including work by Rudy Mills, Junior Murvin, Keith & Tex, The Chuckles, Eric Donaldson, Pat Satchmo, Tinga & Ernie, and The Ethiopians. VariousAll Aboard – 25 Train Tracks Calling At All Destinations ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A weird idea for a collection, but a great one too – a set that brings together a batch of train-themed tunes from the 60s, and uses the transportation narrative as a way to unlock ideas of personal freedom and social change! The "train" here isn't just a gimmick – and instead focuses on the way that the mode of transportation helped open up new ideas and new vistas in the postwar years – a way of getting out, and getting past – served up here in a range of soul, blues, and other styles too! The set's got 25 tracks in all, put together with the usual top-shelf Ace Records approach – and titles include "Freedom Riders" by Harold Jackson, "Steam" by Caroline Day, "Number 9 Train" by Tarheel Slim, "Hurry Hurry Choo Choo" by Sharon Tandy, "Memphis Train" by Rufus Thomas, "Won't Be Long" by Dusty Springfield, "The Downbound Train" by Chuck Berry, "Train To Skaville" by The Ethiopians, "Go Go Train" by Jackie Pain, "Freedom Train" by James Carr, "This Train" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, "Up The Line" by Little Walter, "Death Train Blues" by Daddy Long Legs, "Stop That Train" by Keith & Tex, "Country Line Special" by Cyril Davies, and "Big Train" by Bobby Wayne. VariousRocking On The GG Beat 1970/1971 ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 24.99
A huge collection of work handled by producer Alvin GG Ranglin – initially a member of The Maytones, but an artist who gave a much stronger contribution to Jamaican music through his work in the studio! GG may not be as legendary a name as some of the other producers from the time, but as this set shows, his top-shelf work was a key part of the sound of early reggae – served up here in a massive amount of cuts issued by Trojan at the start of the 70s, 16 of which appear here on CD for the first time ever! As usual with Doctor Bird, not only is the track selection great, the whole thing is supported with really detailed notes that offer up the full story behind the music and the man who created it – in a package of 48 tracks in all, with work from The Slickers, Maytones, Ethiopians, Invaders, Cynthia & Irving, Maxie & Glen, Jah Huntley, Dennis Alcapone, Trevor Brown, Charlie Ace, Cynthia Richards, and others. Trojan/Harlem Shuffle (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heady helping of rare singles from the farther reaches of the indie scene in early reggae – labels that include Duke, Grape, Splash, High Note, Explosion, and JJ – all tiny companies that are now part of the larger Trojan Records empire! The work here is nicely varied – as many styles as promised in the title, but with maybe the soulful edge of rocksteady at the core – a strong focus on the kind of late 60s singles that had more than enough depth to cross the Atlantic and get plenty of play on the London scene too! Titles include "Old Time (dub)" by GG All-stars, "Black Power" by Dave Barker, "Wondering" by The Hippy Boys, "Let My People Go" by The Rulers & The Carib Beats, "It's Too Late" by Chosen Few, "Going In Circles" by Charmers All Stars, "Love Brother" by Herman, "Rim Bim Bam" by The Ethiopians, "Fire Fire (take 3)" by Tony & His Group, "Night Of Love" by Ansel Collins, "Pony Ride" by Winston Groovy & Pat Rhoden, "Dee's Special" by Lynn Taitt & The Jets, and "Going In Circles" by Charmers All Stars. ✨✧ VariousReggae Reggae/Pipeline (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Super-heavy reggae from the early days of Trojan Records – something that might come as a surprise if you just look at the image on the cover! That photo is from the cover of the first set on here – the Reggae Reggae collection, issued by Trojan in 1972, and a killer batch of work from producer Alvin GG Ranglin – who also handled all the material on the second collection, Pipeline – as both are presented here, along with a huge amount of bonus tracks, many of which appear on CD for the first time ever! There's a really wonderful overview of sounds and styles here – both vocal and instrumental tracks, and a few key numbers that really show the shifting sounds of reggae as the 70s were moving forward. Doctor Bird present both records in a much richer setting than the original vinyl – really focusing on Ranglin's work in the notes, and adding in 27 bonus tracks as well – for a whopping 51 titles in all. Includes work by Shorty Perry, Lloyd & Carey, GG All stars, Del Williams, The Maytones, Billy Dyce, Gary Ranglin, John Holt, U Roy, Dennis Brown, Bongo Herman, Max Romeo, Dennis Alcapone, The Untouchables, Cat Campbell, The Ethiopians, and others. ✨✧ Jimmy Cliff & OthersHarder They Come (2CD Deluxe Edition) ... CD
Island, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. In addition, you get another disc of bonus material, much of it recorded in the crucial years before the film's release, giving you a wonderful portrait of the Jamaican music scene at the time, a dozen and a half of the finest rocksteady and reggae jams of the day, including Desmond Dekker's "Israelites", The Ethiopians "Reggae Hit The Town", Dave & Ansel Collins "Double Barrel", Jimmy Cliff's "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah" and "Wonderful World, Beautiful People", The Maytals' "Do The Reggay" and "54-46 (That's My Number)", The Melodians "It's My Delight" and Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby". 30 tracks in all on this awesome 2 disc set, packaged up nicely with notes by Dave Katz, photos from the film and full lyrics and track notations! ✨✧ Derrick HarriottRiding The Roots Chariot ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorites in the colossal reissue and compilation series put together by Pressure Sounds. Deep soulful roots cuts, all produced by Derrick Harriott, one of the finest producers of Jamaican music, with a feel that is at times reminiscent of some of the best soul cuts coming out of Motown or Curtis Mayfield's productions. Most of the tracks here are DJ cuts, with some of the best, like Big Youth & U Roy chatting over the bubbling rhythms, and a couple of nice harmony tracks featuring the Ethiopians, plus some instrumentals with Augustus Pablo blowing some nice melodica lines. Derrick even takes a vocal turn himself on the massive 12" version of "Slave". Also included are Dennis Brown's "Concentration", an version of "Dock of the Bay" by Big Youth & the Ethiopians "Good Ambition". 16 tracks in all. CD
