A sweet double-header from Johnny Hammond Smith – 2 early albums on a single CD! All Soul is one of the hardest to find albums by Johnny Hammond Smith – a sweet set of easy-going grooves, with a wonderful late night soul jazz approach! The feel here is very much in the mode of work by Jimmy Smith from the time – grooving by a rhythm group that includes Thornel Schwartz on guitar and Leo Stevens on drums, and freely styled solos by Johnny over the top! Titles include "Easy Like", "All Soul", "Secret Love", and "Sweet Cookies". That Good Feelin features some very early work as a leader from Hammond hero Johnny Hammond Smith! There's a slight R&B undercurrent on some of the cuts – that formative organ sound before the smoother styles of the 60s soul jazz years – and Smith's got help from Thornel Schwartz on guitar, who'd played famously with another Smith – Jimmy – plus George Tucker on bass and Leo Stevens on drums. Two unissued tracks from this mighty group from the London scene – material recorded during the sessions for their Black To The Future record, appearing here for the first time! There's loads of dancefloor soul cuts here, mixed with some overlooked gems – and the whole thing's wonderful, especially if you only know Edwin's later hits. On the original Switched On record, moog, fuzz, and farfisa have never sounded so great together – and although these guys drank deep of the well of 60s pop magic before making this modern-day classic – they also come off sounding pretty darn original on their own! When this gem of a record first hit the world, it was as if all of us were hearing music from the cosmos for years, but could never find a way to make it part of our everyday lives. Then along come Tim Gane, Laetitia Sadier, and crew – and completely change the world for the better! An album that no home should be without – with titles that include "Contact", "Super-Electric", "Doubt", "Brittle", "Au Grand Jour", "The Way Will Be Opening", and "Changer". Refried Ectoplasm is the second in the holy trinity of "switched on" albums from Stereolab – a set that collects together all the unusual recordings and other side bits the group were doing in the early years of their career – standing strong as a testament to their non-stop efforts to forever push the boundaries of electric fuzzy pop! The 60s swirl through time and space, and make the future sound even better than we could have imagined it – while the Channel is drained, and England and France become one in a genius marriage of pure pop modes. Even though Stereolab gave the world some undeniable classics in the late 90s and early 00s, they were also working endlessly, and seemed to record more than they could ever fit on a full length set – which resulted in all the cool singles, limited releases, and other material included here – not dusty tapes pulled from the archives, but beautiful work that often returns the group to all the space age charms of their first few records! Tracks are short and fierce, but it's clear that Stitt can groove in a "blow the jukebox out" kind of way when he's in the right company – but still show enough of the impeccable care that he did with his straighter jazz albums on Roost and Verve. The work's a unified sort of story – kind of a disco opera of sorts – but more than the lyrics or the story, what makes the album great is the rhythms – full-on and non-stop, rolling strongly from tune after tune in a highly energized blend. There's maybe more jazz here than folk – some incredible work on horns amidst the percussion and guitars of the large lineup of Super Biton De Segou – a legendary group from Mali, and one whose roots are given great presentation in this double-length set! The music has a rawness that's different than work from other parts of the West African scene at the time – maybe not so much as to be folksy, but with a strong highlight of acoustic instrumentation, and very unassuming production that gives these tracks an honest sense of power after all these years. The style is definitely a lot more 80s than some of Mallia's 70s work – plenty of the more compressed elements you'd know from film scores of the time, and electric drum rhythms and basslines – all popping and percolating in different ways from track to track! The Blue Note debut of Wilco guitarist Nels Cline – a player who's quite a talent in his own right, and who seems to reach a new sort of height on this album! The record's an ambitious one – and features sublime larger arrangements by Michael Leonhart – who provides a very different setting for some of Cline's moody work on the strings of the guitar – as woodwinds and strings support his sounds in a few different modes – sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric, with a bit of pedal steel and other effects too. Leonhart's work brings a warmth and humanity to the record that Cline doesn't always have – but at a level that doesn't take away Nels' presence, either – and the set mixes classic standards with a range of unique song choices, in a double-length batch of music that includes "Invitation", "Hairpin & Hatbox", "Beautiful Love", "Lady Gabor", "Why Was I Born", "Snare Girl", "The Bond", "The Search For Cat", "Secret Love", "You Noticed", and "I Have Dreamed". A great remake of the original Ruby Andrews hit – done by a later Chicago soul group with a sweetly gliding feel! The legendary John Coltrane was a leader on some amazing recordings of the late 50s and 1960s – but right at the start of his career, he also added key contributions to records headed up by other folks too – and some of the best of those moments are collected here in this well-done set! The "other side" isn't really a part of the Coltrane legacy that's different than the rest – but these early tracks show just how important his tenor saxophone stylings were to the transforming sound of jazz at the end of the 50s – taking things past earlier bop expressions, yet still in a straightforward mode – with solos that are sometimes even more stunning than the work of the leaders under whom the records were issued! An amazing little group – one that starts with the ensemble improvisation energy of John Coltrane's Ascension, but then takes off into a whole new electrified direction of its own! Crimetime Orchestra boast a heady rhythm section in the form of Bugge Wesseltoft on keyboards, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums – all players schooled in free jazz ways, but working here with an electrified sort of force – almost a rockish fusion undercurrent, which is mixed beautifully with the complicated horn lines of the other members of the group. Bassist Bjornar Andressen brings in a double-heavy bottom to the record – and other players include Vidar Johansen on tenor, Jon Klette on alto, Djetil Moster on tenor, Oyvind Brakke on trombone, Sjur Miljeteig on trumpet, and Anders Hana on guitar. Bugge recorded the whole thing, with some additional electric effects – and titles include "Rest In Piece" and the seven-part "Live Is A Beautiful Monster" suite. CD
