✨✧ Dyke & The BlazersI Got A Message – Hollywood 1968 to 1970 ... LP
Craft, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A heady second chapter of a legendary funk group that were only around for a few short years, but gave us some great music in the process – presented here with 16 unissued tracks from their years in Los Angeles, including work from members of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band too! With so much unreleased music, the set's like a fresh discovery of Dyke & The Blazers – adding new takes and versions to the material they recorded in LA before Dyke passed all too quickly – making for a long-overdue addition to their small body of recorded work. Titles unissued stereo mixes of "We Got More Soul (full length)", "Funky Walk (full length)", "The Wobble (full length)", "Let A Woman Be A Woman Let A Man Be A Man", "Funky Bull (full length)", "Booga Jivin", "Stuff (full length)", "Runaway People (full length)", and "Moon" – plus the never-issued "The Walk (part 1 east)", "Do It Together (orig mix)", "WUFO Radio Spot", "Day Is Comin (demo)", and "I'm So All Alone (alt)". Also includes the cuts "Black Boy", "It's Your Thing", "You Are My Sunshine", and "Shot Gun Slim" – all very funky! LP, Vinyl record album

Dyke & The BlazersWe Got More Soul – The Ultimate Broadway Funk ... CD
Original Sound/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 22.99
The best collection we've ever seen of the work of funky soul legends Dyke & The Blazers – a double-length set that features full, unedited versions of their classics – plus a whopping batch of previously unreleased tunes! Dyke & The Blazers had a groove that was mighty solid back in the late 60s – a hard-vamping, tightly rhythmic groove that easily matched the best early funk of the time from Charles Wright, Sly Stone, or James Brown – and which was often served up with a rougher edge, and an overall sound that was a lot more dangerous! However, many of the group's singles really trimmed down their performances – shaving off key instrumental moments that are lovingly re-attached here, and combining them with some even rarer tracks that never saw the light of day back in the 60s. The whole thing's amazing – and the 2CD set features a whopping 33 tracks in all, split into one disc of material recorded in Phoenix, and one more of tracks from Hollywood! Titles include "Black Boy", "Stuff", "Moon", "Booga Jivin", "Runaway People", "Funky Broadway Time (parts 1 & 2)", "Swamp Walk", "Extra Funk", "Let A Woman Be A Woman Let A Man Be A Man", "Soul Cake", "She Knows It", "Let's Do It Together", "Bring It On Back", "Funky Walk (parts 1 & 2)", and "Triple Funk". Earth Wind & FireSpirit/That's The Way Of The World (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Columbia/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
A pair of classics from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirit – a big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Of course, with Charles Stepney helping out on production, it's hard to miss – and he's one of the few cats who could handle a blend like this so well. The compression in the band's playing is impeccable – with just the right mix of spacey spiritualism, sophisticated jazzy playing, and a straight ahead love of the soulful hook. Includes the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! That's The Way Of The World may be Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD

Duke EllingtonHistorically Speaking ... CD
Bethlehem, 1956. Used ... $4.99
The album's a bit less "historical" than you might guess from the title – at least at the time it was issued in the mid 50s! The material is from Chicago sessions recorded in 1956 – unusual non-Columbia material for the period, featuring the Ellington group working in a slightly older-styled mode. Much of the material is from the earlier songbook of the orchestra – but it's done here with some slight modern touches that show the 50s impulses of the group firmly in place. Players include Cat Anderson and Clark Terry on trumpet, Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, and Harry Carney on baritone sax – and titles include "Midriff", "Ko Ko", "Lonesome Lullaby", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", "Jack The Bear", "Stompy Jones", and "Creole Love Call". ✨✧ Duke EllingtonUnknown Session ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard to believe that given Duke Ellington's presence at the start of the 60s, there would be an unknown session from the time – but the discovery of this material in the 70s made for another great chapter in the Duke's career during the classic Columbia years! The material here is played by a sweet small group that includes Ray Nance on coronet, Lawrence Brown on Trombone, Johnny Hodges on alto sax, Harry Carney on baritone, Aaron Bell on bass, and Sam Woodward on drums – all working in a format that almost feels a bit more relaxed and intimate than other Columbia sessions – although not with the rough edges you might expect from a lost date. Tracks include "Everything But You", "Black Beauty", "Something To Live For" "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Mighty Like The Blues", and "Dual Highway". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sleepy John EstesBrownsville Blues ... CD
Delmark, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic material captured during the moment of Sleepy John Estes' rediscovery in 1962 – a session that mostly has Sleepy on vocals and guitar, with just a bit of additional support on a few tracks! The approach is perfect for Estes – easing him back into recording at a level that's very personal, almost conversational – and the singer has this surprisingly easygoing and fluid quality on both vocals and guitar – as if he'd been in the limelight for years, instead of lost to the shifting sands of time! Support is by the harmonica of Hammie Nickson on three tracks, and the bass of Ed Wilkenson on two as well – and titles include "City Hall Blues", "Mailman Blues", "Pat Mann", "Al Rawls", "Lawyer Clark", "Working Man Blues", "Government Money", and "Martha Hardin". Bill Evans with Monica ZetterlundSwedish Concert 1975 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Novadisc/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1975. Used ... $24.99
Bill Evans is reunited with singer Monica Zetterlund – in a live date done more than a decade after their classic Waltz For Debby album! The first side of the record features Evans in a trio mode – working instrumentally, without Monica, in a group that features the great Eddie Gomez on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums – easily some of the better-recorded European live material by Bill from the 70s, caught in a way that really shows his new sensitivity in the later decade. Evans' piano is breathtaking here – a subtle symphony of shades and tones that delights the ears at each new twist and turn – recorded in some slightly longish takes on tunes that include "Sugar Plum", "Sareen Jurer", "Very Early", and "Gloria's Step". Bill continues the feeling of the first side wonderfully on the flip – as Zetterlund joins the group, and shows how much she's matured as well since here last meeting with Evans. Most of the tunes are standards, but they've got a sensitivity that goes way beyond familiar readings – carried off wonderfully by Monica in some beautifully dark-toned vocals. Titles include "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "The Second Time Around", "Once Upon A Summertime", "What's New", and the lovely "Samba". CD

A great little album from Georgie Fame – with a hard raw soul sound that shows what a big crossover potential he had with the UK soul market – so much so that this batch of material was issued in the US as well! The album's got some wonderful arrangements – quite raw, with some nice organ, and plenty of heavy vocals from Georgie in a strong blue eyed soul mode. ✨✧ Jim FassetSymphony Of The Birds ... CD
EM (Japan), Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wild stuff – and one of the oddest records we've ever heard! The work is truly a Symphony Of Birds – in that all the source material here was recorded in the field, out of the mouths of actual birds – but the overall execution is far different than just a bunch of birdcalls, and thanks to careful studio manipulation, Jim Fassett makes the whole thing sound like a record of analogue electronics! From what we can tell, the album involves Fassett manipulating and re-assembling his bird call recordings in ways that form a whole new kind of music – one that has some bird-like elements, but which sounds hauntingly electronic at most moments – and which comes across in a beautiful array of chirps and cheeps. The package features some notes in Japanese, others in English, lots of photos – and even a massive "disc guide", listing dozens of related albums of field recordings, bird calls, and even whistling! Titles include some initial "Explanatory Comments" by Fassett, plus different movements of the suite. The second half features more birdcall recordings, narrated by Fassett – but presented in a more straightforward way. CD

Bureau B (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A deep dive into the genius of Faust – material recorded by the groundbreaking experimental collective at their home base during the early 70s, none of issued at the time! The work here stands as a seminal addendum to the too-small catalog of the group's material from these days – and the sounds within really show Faust at their most creative – moving through the kind of sonic territory that you'd know from their records, but presented here as if you've discovered an album that you somehow passed by! Some tracks are spare and moody, others driving and jamming – and throughout the material, Faust show that really unique ear for mixing live instrumentation and studio experimentation – all at a level that was very much their own, even in the heady company of the Krautrock generation. The material was originally part of the expensive Faust box set, but is presented here as a standalone release – and titles on volume one include "Naja", "Flaflas", "Mechankika", "Vorsatz", "Bonne Soupe Au Fromage", "Acouphenes", "Fin De Face", "Weird Sounds Sound Bizarre", and "Es Ist Wieder Da". ✨✧ First ClassBeach Baby – The Complete Recordings (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An insane package of work from this wonderful British group – a studio pop creation who stormed the charts with one huge hit, but also recorded some really great overlooked material! The style of First Class is a brilliant extension of the sound of American harmony pop of the 60s – and one that blends it together with a good deal of 70s soft rock as well – but always with a super-catchy style that's completely wonderful! The group is the brainchild of Brit studio legend John Carter – and they're kind of a recast take on the sound of the Beach Boys in later years – filtered through a nicely compressed UK mid 70s pop approach that brings in some sweeter, softer modes, but which also has some of that "bump" of glam-era pop as well. The group's best known for their massive 70s hit "Beach Baby" – but they've got a great sound that's more than worth rediscovering all these years later – which you will definitely do when digging through this massive set. The 3CD package features 82 tracks in all the group's two full albums and singles, plus unreleased tracks – and, even cooler, a whole host of rare jingles they recorded – for Right Guard deodorant, Eveready batteries, Singer sewing machines, and many other products. The jingles alone are worth the price of admission – and the whole thing is super groovy, all the way through! CD

Ella FitzgeraldTwelve Nights In Hollywood (4CD set) ... CD
Verve/Hip-O Select, 1961/1962. Used 4 CDs ... $19.99
Massive music from Ella Fitzgerald – 4CDs worth of sublime small group recordings – all of them live, and all of them previously unissued! The set follows the same format of the Verve Ella In Hollywood album – recorded in a small club setting, with combo backing that really lets Fitzgerald open up and swing – inflecting the tunes with the kind of warmth and spontaneity that she brought to her famous live performances of the time – which were almost always more compelling than her studio sides, no matter how great those were too! The first 3CDs feature material from two weeks' worth of recording in May of 1961 – with backing from Jim Hall on guitar, Lou Levy on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – and CD four features Ella returning to Hollywood for two more nights in 1962, with trio backing from Paul Smith on piano, Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. There's a massive 77 tracks in all – handsomely package in a hardcover 7" square book – which also features beautiful color pages inside, lots of notes on the music, and design that's every bit as groovy as the old albums on Verve. Titles include "Joe Williams' Blues", "It's De-Lovely", "Lorelei", "I Can't Get Started", "Round Midnight", "Perdido", "Little White Lies", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Across The Alley From The Alamo", "Love For Sale", "Exactly Like You", "Mack The Knife", "Teach Me Tonight", "My Kind Of Boy", "It Had To Be You", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "All Of Me", and "Too Darn Hot/Ella's Twist". And, in case you're wondering, there's almost no repetition in the set at all – all discreet, unique tunes – not just the sort of rehash you might get in other concert box sets of this nature! CD

✨✧ Five Day RainGood Year – The Five Day Rain Anthology ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly rich anthology – given that the group Five Day Rain issued no music at all during their short time in existence! Yet the creation of some white label promo records for the group's own use led to their rediscovery many years later – at a time when maybe the world was ready to hear their tuneful blending of psychedelic, harmonic, and hard rock modes – first forged in the group Iron Prophet, and served up as Five Day Rain with an expanded lineup who also were issuing music on singles as Studd Pump too! Yet it's the core work by Five Day here that's wonderful – music that is already pretty amazing in the raw, stripped-down form of the white label record's material – and which makes us wonder what would have happened if they'd ever gotten full treatment by a label like Vertigo or Harvest. This massive 2CD set features the best surviving versions of the white label LP tracks, plus unissued material, demos, and other rare material – including their Studd Pump single as well. Titles include "Good Year", "Leave It At That", "Fallout", "Marie's A Woman", "Too Much Of Nothing", "Don't Be Misled", "Sea Song", "Reason Why", "Antonia", "The Boy", "Wanna Make Love To You", "Dartboard", "Do Don't Worry", "Miss Elizabeth", "Floating", "Spare The Children", and even a version of "Sunny". Dancefloor ready live band grooving is the warmly beating heart of the Freeez sound at this early point – with heated drums and killer basslines driving it – clearly influenced by late 70s international club sounds, but with this great, tight energy and dexterous musicianship that could only come from a real, functioning, true band. Nice stuff! Disc One includes the original album & remixes: "Mariposa (Butterfly)", "Caribbean Winter", "Easy On The Onions", "Sunset", "Flying High", "Roller Chase", "First Love" and more from the original, plus bonus tracks including "Ainti-Freeez (Set Me Free) – Disco Version", "Fly By Night", "Flying High (12" Remix)" and more. Disc Two includes early singles, demos, instrumentals and the complete Anti-Freeez remix album from 1984 – with "Keep In Touch", "Hot Footing It", "Stay", "Roller Chase (1984 Remix)", "Alone (1984 Remix)", "One To One (1984 Remix)", "Caribbean Winter (1984 Remix)", "Say You Will Be My Lover (Previously Unreleased Demo)" and more. 30 tracks on 2CDs. ✨✧ FrukoA La Memoria Del Muerto (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Early work from Colombian music legend Fruko, and a very different style than some of his later material – as you might guess from the album's cover image of a junkie shooting up in a graveyard! The sound here is more than dark enough to match that image – heavily percussion, with fast-snapping rhythms wrapped around deep basslines and lots of hard-edge piano – all at a level that feels more like early 60s Cuban descarga than some of the other Discos Fuentes material from the 70s! The horns are great when they step forward – and the vocals are wrapped perfectly around the excellent grooves – on titles that include "Descarga Fruko", "Bomba Africana", "Baho Kende", "Rumbo A La Cuidad", "Mi Verdadero Son", "A La Memoria Del Muerto", "Tihuanaco", and "La Fruta Bomba". FugsFugs First Album (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Fug Records/Ace (UK), 1965. Used ... $9.99
The legendary first album by The Fugs – a set that was first issued on Folkways Records, then later on ESP – and which is maybe a perfect bridge between these different underground worlds in the 60s! Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg, Peter Stampfel, and the others are clearly budding hippies – but there's also a quality here that's different than the scene a few years later – maybe pulled equally from the late beat world, and the underground film world – no surprise, as Harry Smith produced the record for the group, and really has a great ear for their rootsier elements on acoustic instruments. The whole thing was recorded in two afternoon sessions in 1965, and still remains a record with surprising power after all these years – on titles that include "Slum Goddess", "Swinburn Stomp", "Supergirl", "Boobs A Lot", "My Baby Done Left Me", and "I Couldn't Get High". CD adds in 11 more bonus tracks - additional material from the original sessions – plus material recorded at the Night Of Napalm at St Marks place in 1965! CD

Westbound, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A massive double length set from Funkadelic! As if the group's vision wasn't already expansive enough in their early Westbound years, they really make incredible use of the space of this 2LP set to show off their talent for funky invention, fuzzed-out guitar, and mind-bending look at the world around them – taking off into a heady array of topics and settings that are even more chilling than before. If Maggot Brain can be taken as a document of Detroit after the apocalypse, this set should be read as a wider statement on the climate in America that was leading up to it – all served up with some of the group's funkiest rhythms on record to date! Titles include "You Hit the Nail On the Head", "A Joyful Process", "Loose Booty", "I Call My Baby Pussycat", "Biological Speculation", "Philmore", "We Hurt Too", "Everybody Is Going To Make It This Time", "Miss Lucifer's Love", "and "If You Don't Like the Effects Don't Produce the Cause". And even though the CD presents the full 2LP set on one disc, it's still got room for 2 bonus tracks – 45 rpm versions of "Loose Booty" and "A Joyful Process"! CD

They certainly got the title right on this one – because it definitely is the ultimate collection of Funkadelic goodies! The 2CD set pulls together 29 tracks from the group's classic years at Westbound – and shows them starting out as a messed-up, guitar-growling rock funk act – filled with the unique crossover spirit of Detroit – then turning into a tighter, funkier soul act with the power to really rock the charts! All the good funky tunes are here – and the set seems to have a special focus on tracks by the group that have been sampled strongly in recent history! Titles include "Red Hot Mama", "Funky Dollar Bill", "Hit It & Quit It", "Cosmic Slop", "Loose Booty", "Get Off Your Ass & Jam", "America Eats Its Young", "Maggot Brain", "I'll Stay", "Nappy Dugout", "I'll Bet You", "I Got A Thing You Got A Thing Everybody's Got A Thing", "A Joyful Process", "Be My Beach", "Undisco Kidd", "Biological Speculation", "Take Your Dead Ass Home", and "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure". ✨✧ Taana GardnerWhen You Touch Me – The West End Recordings ... CD
West End/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $17.99 24.99
A great package – one that features the self-titled Taana Gardner album from the legendary New York club act on West End Records – plus lots of bonus material too! The core record is the only full length album cut by singer Taana Gardner – quite a surprise, given how much impact she had on the clubs with her 12" singles at the start of the 80s! The album's got Gardner as a much richer singer than you might expect – able to lay back on a mellow track as well as step out on a groover – always with that higher range of vocals that really made her a standout at the time, but in ways that are never gimmicky or poppy at all. And in fact, there's a lot more depth to the record than you'd guess from the dated exercise cover image – a classic soul approach that's also quite a surprise for the mostly disco West End label too. Tracks are all nice and long – and backings are by Sunship, with Bernard Wright on Fender Rhodes. Titles include "Work That Body", "We Got To Work It Out", "When You Touch Me", "Paradise Express", and "Just Be A Friend". 2CD set features lots of bonus material – Kenton Nix extended mixes of "When You Touch Me", "Just Be A Friend", and "Work That Body" – plus two key non-LP singles, "That's The World (12" club)" and "Heartbeat (12" club) – and lots of later mixes that include "No Frills (Larry Levan mix)", "I'm Comin (radio mix)", "Work That Body (MAW re-edit)", "When You Touch Me (MAW re-edit)", "Work That Body (wing it for the A-Man Tom Moulton edit)", and "Paradise Express (Gomi's tribute vocal)". A beautiful version of one of Erroll Garner's best-selling albums ever – in a special oversized package that features the full unedited concert on two CDs, plus a third CD with the original edited album and special interview material too! The album's a famous live date recorded in the mid 50s – and a record that's as important to his catalog as the classic Misty! Garner's playing before an apparently large audience, but the recording quality is still nice and clear – a strong focus on his amazing work on the keys of the piano – filled with rhythmic invention at every turn, in a way that can only be described as Garner-esque, and which still leaves us breathless after all these years. Despite the oft-heard power of the record, it's still a great one – worthy of discovery even if it wasn't a hit, and still great even if it was. Rhythm is by Eddie Calhoun on bass and Denzil Best on drums – and the 3CD package was co-produced by pianist Geri Allen, with a total of 36 tracks that include "Teach Me Tonight", "I'll Remember April", "Autumn Leaves", "Red Top", "April In Paris", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Erroll's Theme", and "Where Or When". ✨✧ Stan GetzMoments In Time ... CD
Resonance, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
There may be a mountain of Stan Getz records on the market – but take it from us, this is definitely one that you need in your collection! The set presents material from a never-issued live recording – Stan on sublime, soulful tenor at the Keystone Korner in 1976 – working with a quartet that includes Joanne Brackeen on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all ultra-hip players who set Stan up at a level that rivals the openly creative genius of studio albums like Sweet Rain or Captain Marvel, but with that special sort of snapshot that also marks his rare live material with Gary Burton too! The tracks were cut during the same week that produced the Getz/Gilberto 76 album, but the sound here is very different – not bossa, all jazz, and with that really inspired sense of soloing that Stan hit once he discovered Coltrane and the influence of that generation. Wonderful all the way through – with titles that include "Infant Eyes", "Summer Night", "Peace", "Con Alma", "Morning Star", and "The Cry Of The Wild Goose". CD

Given that Capitol had recently linked up with the ever-growing EMI corporation in the early 60s, it was able to take advantage of the global catalog of the music giant, and managed to dip pretty heavily into the Brazilian Odeon catalog of tunes to cash in on the American popularity of bossa nova. This album was one of their bigger imports, and it features material originally recorded in Brazil, with Gilberto up front, backed by arrangements by Jobim. A very cool sci fi soundtrack from Marcello Giombini – as sexy as the image on the cover might imply, but also pretty darn electric and spacey as well! The album echoes some of Giombini's earlier electronic sound library material – and is often spare, with heavy use of keyboards – in ways that are more like late 60s sci fi scoring than some of the more disco keyboards you'd hear in other space soundtracks from the time! The spareness really works well, and creates an evocative mood on both the mellower tracks and some of the more action-oriented ones – which even get slightly funky at points. CD features 16 tracks from the film – all of them pretty great! CD

One of the heaviest soundtracks scored by Goblin during the 70s – with lots of funky club influences, and a funky disco sound on a number of tracks that feature vocals by the great European club diva Asha Puthli. Puthli sings on the tracks "The Whip" and "The Sound Of Money", and there's one more track, "Welcome To The Boogie", that's got unidentified vocals – but which follows in a similar disco sort of mode! The rest of the material is mostly uptempo cop show type stuff from the era – with plenty of keyboards, wah wah guitars, and heavy rhythms – that funky mix of rock and soundtrack styles that Goblin did so well back in the day. Titles include "Trumpet's Flight", "Sicilian Samba", "Stunt Cars", and "Disco China". The early roots of The Guess Who – served up here in a double-length collection of material that's overflowing with great cuts before their famous years on RCA! The group's sound is already pretty strongly formed here – thanks to vocals and piano from Burton Cummings, and guitar work from Randy Bachman – maybe in more familiar garage territory on a number of cuts, but definitely finding that special sort of approach by the middle of the set – especially once Cummings discovers the more soulful, expressive side of his vocals. The set's got 28 tracks in all – put together by Bachman himself – and titles include "Friends Of Mine", "Maple Fudge", "Of A Dropping Pin", "We're Coming To Dinner", "Sitar Saga", "Miss Felicity Grey", "There's No Getting Away From You", "Croyez Moi", and "Shadows Cross The Shadows". Really great vocal work from legendary underground figure Brion Gysin – best known as a poet, but also a key European connection for the American beats – and a frequent partner in the language experiments by William S Burroughs! Here, Gysin mixes his words in both singing and spoken styles – a bit more of the former than some of his recordings with avant jazz musicians – and hits a groove that bubbles over with all sorts of cool funky touches that often recall the vibe of the Ze Records material from the French scene of the early 80s. Ramuntcho Matta handles production and the main creative direction of the music – and opens the door to work from Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Caroline Loeb on vocals, and Yann Le Ker on bass and guitar,. Kama Sutra/Mr Nobody, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
The legendary debut of Hackamore Brick – a really unique little group who only gave the world this one little record, then disappeared for decades! Although issued on the mostly-pop Kama Sutra imprint, the album's got this earnest, honest quality that's really refreshing for the time – neither too-jamming rock or psych, but also not really singer-songwriter material either – and instead that kind of personal blend of acoustic elements and electric passion that's been rediscovered recently in the farther reaches of the "private" underground of the 70s. Yet here, the group are emerging already full-formed – with songwriting that's sublime, vocals that are transcendent, and mix of modes that was certainly a head-scratcher to the mainstream market of the time – but which has gone onto make the album a real treasure that's gotten some much-needed rediscovery in recent years. The first LP features the full album The Hawk Relaxes – a great illustration of the gentle genius that made so many later Coleman Hawkins records so great! The relaxed setting for this record is a perfect setting for Hawkins to open up and stretch out – working his tenor with a sound that has surprising modern edges, and unusual twists and turns, yet still all the careful economy of his better-known classic sides. There's a command of the instrument here that few other aging players ever seemed to muster – always a sense of new discovery and invention that marks the work strongly, even at a time when Hawkins could have been sitting on his laurels, playing the same old tune! Titles are all standards, but don't let that fool you – because there's plenty of magic in Coleman's versions of "Moonglow", "Just A Gigolo", "Speak Low", "When Day Is Done", and "I'll Never Be The Same". Oh, and we almost forgot – just because we're so focused on Hawkins – the other players include Ronnell Bright on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – making a surprising early appearance here! East Wind (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
An obscure set of solo tunes from modernist Andrew Hill – originally recorded for the Japanese East West label in 1975, and a very different side of Andrew's music than his Blue Note work of the 60s – but one that's equally great!. Hill's playing a grand piano – with a complex approach to chords that's really compelling – this sense of flow and majesty that we really love, as Andrew tries out some sharp edges at points – but still retains some of that soulfulness he rediscovered as the 70s approached. There's a darkness to the material that we didn't always hear in Hill's other sides – and the intimacy of the recording shows that his talents are still extremely rich at this point in his career. Blues-a-plenty, but still pretty darn jazzy too – as the "blues" in the title is just Verve's code for the way the album's put together – loose, unstructured, and a great format for Johnny Hodges to do some wonderful blowing on alto sax! The album also features strong work from Ben Webster, too – whose tone is perfect for the late nite vibe of the record – and other players include Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Vic Dickenson on trombone, Billy Strayhorn on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums – kind of an Ellington small combo, relaxing here in a wonderfully intimate setting. The sound is beautiful, and the album's one of Hodges' best-ever for Verve – with cuts that include "Cool Your Motor", "Honey Hill", "Saturday Afternoon Blues", and "I Didn't Know About You". CD

Aware/Kent (UK), 1973/1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two wonderful albums from Loleatta Holloway – both a strong full-length document of her early genius in the Atlanta studios! First up is the Loleatta album from 1973 – and if you only know Loleatta Holloway as a disco singer, you'll be really amazed at this debut album – because Loleatta emerges first as deep soul singer with a strong southern vibe – very much in the mode the Atlanta scene did best, before picking up the pace a bit more as the 70s moved on! There's a mellow, blue sort of vibe to the record – but still plenty of that pride and power that made Holloway an equally great singer on an upbeat tune – served up here on tunes by Sam Dees, Ashford & Simpson, and other hip songwriters of the period – set to strong arrangements by Mike Terry, who does a great job of bringing out the lady at her best. Titles include "We Did It", "Mother Of Shame", "Only A Fool", "So Can I", "Our Love", and "Love Woke Me Up". Cry To Me is a wonderful album of southern soul from Loleatta Holloway! The record was her last in the deep soul mode – and it's a gem that should have made her as big as her later disco records – a really well-crafted extension of styles that Stax and Atlantic had done in the 60s, but given a smoother, more sophisticated vibe for the 70s! The record was produced by Floyd Smith, and it's got some of the most sophisticated production we've heard on a southern diva album from the 70s – with instrumentation that still boggles us with its brilliance. Case in point is the amazing cut "Cry To Me", which has these insane banks of "weeping" guitar that send chills down our spine! The cut was written by Sam Dees, who also penned some other fine material for the album – and titles include "I Know Where You're Coming From", "Just Be True To Me", "Something About The Way I Feel", and a cover of Ruby Andrews' "Casanova". A rare funk treat from tenor sax jazz legend Joe Houston – working in a far funkier mode than usual for the obscure Big Town label! The lineup and production is heavy with 50s LA R&B names in it – including Ted Butler, Bo Rhambo and Larry Johnson – and sure enough, there's genuine prime era rhythm & blues DNA in some of the material, to say nothing of the incredible chops of all involved – but the overall sound is very modern 70s jazz, with some really funky cuts, too! The highlight is the two-part title track, "Kicking Back", which is a top shelf jazz funk groover – but the whole record is solid, with "T-Bone Disco", "Hawaiian Disco", "Trippin' In", "Mr. Big H", and "Why Don't You Rock Me". Well, it turned out that the man himself wasn't invincible – but his music has had surprising durability over the years – to a point where even later material like this sounds pretty darn great over the passing of time! The rhythms and production are more contemporary than some of Jackson's classics, but that also maybe gives the whole thing a crackle that keeps it interesting too – partly because so many of these songs were a bit under-discovered when the set was released. The song titles themselves give some idea of where Jackson's headspace was at during the creation of the album – and tracks include "Invincible", "Break Of Dawn", "Butterflies", "Threatened", "Heaven Can Wait", "2000 Watts", "Cry", "The Lost Children", "Unbreakable", "Heartbreaker", "Whatever Happens", "Privacy", and "Don't Walk Away". Motown, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of all that made Motown great at the time, and the special sort of energy that made Rick one of the freshest mainstream talents at the end of the 70s! The record put a lot of money in Barry Gordy's pockets, and for good reason too – given that the set includes the classic hit "Super Freak" – plus "Give It To Me Baby", "Ghetto Life", "Make Love To Me", "Below The Funk (Pass The J)", and "Fire & Desire" – all done in that compressed pop-funky style that James kind of took from Bootsy Collins and manage to successfully soup up for the masses! CD also features the bonus tracks "Give It To Me Baby (12" mix)" and "Super Freak (12" mix)". CD

Joseph JarmanBlack Case Vols 1 & 2 – Return From Exile ... Book
Blank Forms, 1977. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A fantastic side of the many talents of Joseph Jarman – best known as a key member of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and a saxophonist whose talents were crucial to the formation of the AACM – but also a very strong writer, as you'll discover in this book! This version is the full 1977 version of Black Case – and brings together material from the original self-published version in 1974, plus other writings that Jarman had done over the years – some of which later turned up as texts on a variety of albums! The book is a mixture of poetry, free verse, and some prose – sometimes personal, but also very political – maybe even more so than the work of the AEOC. The whole thing is a fantastic revelation, and a representation of Jarman's connection to a much richer cultural world in Chicago – and the book is beautifully done – blue text on white pages, with some images sprinkled throughout – very much a facsimile of the original. 146 pages, softcover. ECM (Germany), 1981. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful presentation of this incredible live material from Keith Jarrett – some of his most important solo piano recordings ever, on a par with the classic Koln Concert album, or his performances in the Sun Bear box set! Jarrett's at his warmest and most lyrical here – spinning out these amazing long lines on piano with an incredible sense of vision – never too self-indulgent, nor too noodling – and always with an ear for tuneful moments that appear quite often along his musical journey! Much of the work is untitled – save for "part 1" or "part 2" – indicating that it was created on the spot, in a really magical moment of improvisation – and even the few tunes with titles feel as if they're just being written then – discovered by Jarrett deep in the musical heart that informs his best moments. 3CD set features the two part Bregenz performance, with encores of "Untitled" and "Heartland" – and the four part "Munchen", with the additon of "Heartland" and "Mon Coeur Est Rouge". Stax (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing under-discovered soul – a huge collection of late 60s recordings by Mable John – probably best known for her work with the Raelettes, or her earlier sides at Motown – but heard here in a pivotal time between those two chapters in her career! A few of the tracks on the set were issued as singles by Stax, but most of the material sat unissued for years – practically one of the greatest crimes in soul in the 60s, because there's a depth here that's tremendous – and a quality level that could have made Mable a huge star at the time. The sound here is pure 60s Stax all the way – extremely deep, and done with a lean, mean punch that's totally great – a perfect meeting of a massive vocal talent and a well-oiled studio system that could take a good singer and make her sound great! The set's a great introduction to Mable's genius – one that features notes on her career and a total of 26 rare tracks that include "Have Your Cake", "Sweet Devil", "Able Mable", "Stay Out of the Kitchen", "Drop On In", and "I'm Catching". A wonderful batch of rare Motown material from Detroit singer Marv Johnson – a vocalist who started out working for Berry Gordy in the late 50s, recording the some of the first material to be released on the Tamla Motown label, and recorded all of the terrific material on this set for Motown from the mid 60s to the start of the 70s! Johnson didn't find his way into the historical canon the way many of the great solo singers and groups he helped pave the way for, but he's no less worthy! This set from Kent UK includes all the tracks from the I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose LP plus previously unreleased numbers numbers and rare mono single mixes – really beautiful stuff and a vital rediscovery of Marv's overlooked work at Motown! Titles include "I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose", "I'm Not A Plaything", "Why Do You Want To Let Me Go", "Bad Girl", "I Miss You Baby (How I Miss You)", the previously unreleased gems "There Goes A Lonely Man", "Understanding", "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound" and more, plus mono versions of several album tracks. 26 tracks in all! Mariano is the real highlight of the album, and his sparkling alto playing on the disc is some of his finest work from the 60s – really standing out in one of his few American sessions from the middle part of the decade – soulful, but searching too – very well presented in an album of Coltrane-ness. Impulse, 1963/1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nice Impulse work from Elvin Jones – 2 albums in a single package! Illumination features an amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet – yet the real charm of the record comes from the reed men, who include Prince Lasha on flute and clarinet, Sonny Simmons on alto and English horn, and Charles Davis on baritone sax! All players are free-thinking modernists, with ties to some of the farther reaches of 60s jazz – yet they work here in a beautifully inside mode, similar to Lasha's excellent Insight album on CBS UK – a vibe that takes all the most wonderful aspects of the Coltrane generation, but pushes them even further with some deeply personal expressions. Tracks include the seminal "Half & Half" – plus "Aborigine Dance In Scotland", "Oriental Flower", and "Nuttin Out Jones", and "Gettin On Way". Dear John C is one of the stranger albums on Impulse, but a beautiful session that's filled with surprises you wouldn't expect! Elvin Jones leads a group of odd bandmates in a set of tracks that's sort of a "letter" to Coltrane, and the groupings include either Roland Hanna or Hank Jones on piano, plus Richard Davis bass, and Charlie Mariano on alto sax! ✨✧ JulyJuly – The Complete Recordings (July/Second Of July/Temporal Anomaly/Resurrection/The Wight Album/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/2020. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
The complete recordings of July – a set that features their rare original album, unreleased tracks, and lots of surprisingly great later material too! First up is the self-titled July album from 1968, presented in both mono and stereo mixes – the debut album from July – a group who only gave the world this gem of a record back at the end of the 60s – but who've gone on to become legendary, based on the strength of the set! The whole thing is a real standout in the psych scene of the UK – well-crafted songs that are tight, but groovy and loose at the same time – tuneful, but filled with experiments – and produced with just the right sort of inventive qualities to make the special flourishes and individual moments of genius really come to light! There's so many great things going on here – an all-rich, no-filler record that's filled with gems that include "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds", "Jolly Mary", "Hallo To Me", "You Missed It All", "The Way", "To Be Free", "Crying Is For Writers", "I See", and "A Bird Lived". Next is Second Of July – a great counterpart to the legendary self-titled album from July – material recorded in a private setting, to predate that psych masterpiece – but every bit as stunning overall! The quality of this work goes way beyond its origins as demo material – as the sound is wonderful, the musical ideas very rich, and overall psychedelic conception is amazing! There's no overindulgence, but also no easy pop psych modes either – and it's really incredible how much these guys can pack into a short song – from unusual guitar lines, to freewheeling rhythms, and trippy ideas in the lyrics. Many numbers have a sweet groove underneath, and are slightly freakbeatish – but there's also a much more unique feel to the record as well. Tracks include "Dandelion Seeds", "You Missed It All", "My Clown", "Friendly Man", "I See", "The Girl In The Cafe", and "Move On Sweet Flower". The box set then moves into two later albums from a re-formed group – Temporal Anomaly and Resurrection – both of which feature material conceived over a number of years, issued on Resurrection in 2013, and on Temporal Anomaly here for the first time ever. Tracks are great – still very much in the spirit of the classic material, and produced with a nicely understated vibe. Last up is The Wight Album – a recent project from July – still sounding surprisingly great after all these years! At this point, the group is a duo – original members Peter Cook and Tom Newman – but they really manage to craft some great sounds here, with a style that ties back to their initial recording in 1968, and which features some of the successful flourishes of their revived activity from about a decade ago! The tunes are way better than any sort of younger attempt at material like this – mostly because there's a nicely understated, although still quite psychedelic, approach to the whole thing – maybe a reminder that with the best psych records, charm is every bit as important as fuzz. Titles on the double-length set include "The Traveler", "Sophie", "Special Guy", "Henry's Squirrel", "Seeking The Hacksaw Blades", "The Game", "What's Gonna Be", "Disco Klingon", "Mods Of Ryde", "It's Up To Me", and "Once When We Was Free". Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Ty Karim – an LA singer from the 60s, just waiting to be rediscovered! Ty might not be the biggest name in California soul, but she's a hell of a great talent here – starting out in the 60s with upbeat Northern Soul groovers – then moving into the 70s with material that's even deeper, and a bit more sophisticated – laidback numbers that really show a maturation in style, and which are filled with wonderful twists and turns! Ty's vocals have a burning quality that's quite surprising, given her kittenish look on the cover – and as the themes get hotter, her singing gets even more righteous – making the whole package a really wonderful journey in soul. And although most of these numbers were issued (or recorded, but unissued) by tiny indie labels, they often have a very full, spacious approach to production – one that's really trying to hit the heights of Detroit or New York at the time. A good number of these cuts weren't issued at the time, and together with the rare singles, they really go a long way towards filling in the gaps in Ty's too-short career on record. Titles include "Lighten Up Baby", "Help Me Get That Feeling Back Again", "Only A Fool", "All At Once", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", "Wear Your Natural Baby", and "Don't Make Me Do Wrong". Ronald Bell of Kool & Gang is still working with the group – and he wrote a lot of material and also performs on the LP. The record shows signs of the direction that Kool & The Gang were taking at the time, with a move towards electric keyboards instead of raw funky guitars – but like Kool's work from the period, the use of these keyboards is nicely restrained, and adds some good jazzy elements to the sound. Cuts include "Waiting At The Bus Stop", "Mr. Nothin", "STP", "Be Real", and a number of versions of "Find A Friend". CD

Really wonderful work from the early 90s scene in Khartoum – sounds that have a much more 70s-styled sound than you might expect! That sound is in keeping with Kamal Keila, who was never a mainstream artist at all – and instead made material like this away from the limelight, which might account for the older spirit – as the music mixes together currents of vintage American soul, particularly some of the Texas horn-heavy bands of the late 60s – plus a bit of Ethiopian flair in the rhythms, and maybe even a bit of bluesy inflections in Keila's voice – even though the music is hardly in the realm of blues at all! The whole thing is as compelling as it is righteous – a quality you'll certainly discover in the English language lyrics of the set, which comprise about half the material. Eddie Kendricks, vintage 1978 – and still very much in the great grooving mode he brought to his earlier solo material for Motown! Even in this giant dancefloor generation, Eddie's got something very special and unique – a voice that can still sound as heartbreaking on a groover as it can on a ballad – and which has a way of linking an earlier generation of fragile male soul vocals with a new sense of 70s masculinity – of which Kendricks was one of the leading lights in soul! There's moments here that might well match some of the best late 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye or Leroy Hutson – and the strong arrangements are by Andrew Louis Smith – a name we don't really know at all, but who should be thanked for helping the record avoid any disco cliches. Titles include "How's Your Love Life Baby", "One Of The Poorest People", "Love Love Love", "The Best Of Strangers Now", "Don't Underestimate The Power Of Love", "Ain't No Smoke Without A Fire" and "Maybe I'm A Fool To Love You". ✨✧ Rahsaan Roland KirkDog Years In The Fourth Ring (Rare Live Material & Natural Black Inventions – Root Strata) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1960s/1997. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest contributions made by the 32 Jazz label so far has been the rich amount of classic Roland Kirk material they've released on the market. The best of Kirk's work has been out of print for years, and like the folks at 32 Jazz, we think that's a darn shame – which is why we're extra-excited about a set like this! This nicely (and strangely) packaged 3 CD set features 2 CDs worth of previously unreleased live material – recorded in the years 1964 to 1975, by jazz recordist/archivist George Bonafacio. The material is amazing, and definitely gives proof to the claim that Kirk's live sets were even more amazing than his studio recordings. There's a wealth of great stuff here that really opens up an understanding of Kirk's 60s and early 70s years – and titles include "Rahsaantalk", "Misterioso", "Jammin With A Wolf", "Sister Sadie", "Blues For Alice", and a very groovy "Multi-Horn Medley". And if that's not enough, the 3rd CD of the set features the totally rare Natural Black Inventions album, which Kirk recorded for Atlantic. The record's got an amazing sound: Roland plays solo (mostly), and without the aid of overdubbing, to create these amazing soundscapes of multiple horns and circular breathing. It's filled with these fantastic throbbing pulsating reed lines, with one horn blowing rhythm, and one playing an adventurous solo – and both being blown live a the same time! Tracks include "Black Root", "Raped Voices", "Day Dream", and "Something For Trane That Trane Could Have Said". 3 great CDs of material by one of our favorite-ever reed players – and nicely priced, if we do say so ourselves! CD
(Includes original die-cut slipcase. One of the inner trays is missing a few teeth but still holds the disc securely – otherwise in great shape!)

✨✧ Roland KirkRahsaan – Complete Mercury Recordings Of Roland Kirk (11CD set) ... CD
Mercury, 1960s/1990. Used 11 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful box set, and one that's filled with amazing material by one of our favorite players of all time! Roland Kirk's work for Mercury has always been darn tough to come by on wax, and even though a number of titles have been reissued individually over the years, this box set is still the best way to approach his early and mid 60's work for Mercury and related labels. The set's got a whopping 10 CDs in all – plus a bonus CD of unreleased stuff – and it's filled with rare material, live tracks, big band tracks, and just plain ol' great hard-wailing straight ahead material by Roland. Players on the set include Jaki Byard, Benny Golson, Wynton Kelly, Roy Haynes, Andrew Hill, Elvin Jones, and Horace Parlan. Very nice, and one you won't tire of quickly! CD
(Out of print and in great shape! Discs, book and slipcase are in fantastic shape!!)

✨✧ Eric KlossSky Shadows/In The Land Of The Giants ... CD
Prestige, 1968/1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 Eric Kloss albums back to back on a single CD – both under-discovered, and both totally great! Sky Shadows is one of the late 60s killers for Prestige by reedman Kloss – sublime material that was every bit as great as some of the bigger-name work for the label, but never really got its due! Kloss is sharper and more focused here than in later years – starting with a hardbop groove, but really reaching out with some inventive sounds of his own, and some great changes from the group! The inventive ensemble features Pat Martino on guitar, Jaky Byard on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and titles include "Sky Shadows", "January's Child", "The Girl With The Fall In Her Hair", and "In A Country Soul Garden". In The Land Of Giants is a crackling bit of modernist free play, with a very soulful edge – and the group includes Booker Ervin, Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, and Alan Dawson all joining Kloss as he hits his mid-period "exploratory" stage. His alto is super-crisp here, and although he's reaching out a bit more than on earlier albums, he never manages to lose the swing that made him sound so great right out of the box. Tracks include "So What", "When Two Lovers Touch", and "Sock It To Me Socrates". CD

Andrzej KorzynskiSekrety Pana Kleska – 1983 to 1988 Lost & Found Film Music ... CD
GAD (Poland), Mid 1980s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Music that's a definite "sekrety" to most of us western listeners – as the set brings together some rare and overlooked soundtrack material from the great Polish composer Andrezj Korzynski – served up here in a range of modes that really show him going strong well into the 80s! A number of tracks showcase that great ear for odd, offbeat sounds that has made Korzynski such a key rediscovery in recent years – served up both on electric instrumentation with nice variations in styles and techniques, but also with some larger orchestrations that are pretty darn great too. As with other Gad label titles, the presentation here is wonderful – and the 2CD package features 54 tracks in all – titles from the projects Akademia Pana Kleksa, Pan Kleks W Kosmosie, and Podroze Pana Kleksa – plus bonus material too! ✨✧ Karin KrogMany Faces Of Karin Krog – Recordings 1967 to 2017 (6CD set) ... CD
Meantime (Norway), Late 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. Used 6CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the legendary Karin Krog – one of our favorite jazz singers of all time – and maybe one of the most creative talents to emerge from the European jazz scene in the past 50 years! Karin's not just a regular singer – she's a hell of a collaborator, and a great experimentalist who's always willing to try out new sounds and styles – modes she's explored since her initial recordings of the 60s, and the wonderful legacy of music she's given us on record from that time onwards – which still results in fantastic new music in recent years too! This package goes way beyond any other Krog collection we've ever seen – not just because it offers up differing discs that look at her many musical "faces" – but also because it brings together recordings for a number of different labels across a great span of time – all to really show the full range of her music! Even if you've got as many of Karin's records as we do, there's plenty that's new here too – and the well-done package divides each disc up into a special theme – with standard material, key collaborations, vocal experiments, and more. The set includes work with John Surman, Steve Kuhn, Marty Paich, Georgie Fame, Don Ellis, Slide Hampton, Red Mitchell, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Drew, Bengt Hallberg, Archie Shepp, and others – and one CD features just spare duets with musicians, and another features some great bigger band material. 59 tracks in all – with loads of surprises! ✨✧ Patti LabelleIt's Alright With Me ... LP
Epic, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A late 70s gem from Patti Labelle! Although the album's recorded right in the height of the disco years, Patti's really shining on the mellower cuts – hitting a serious soulful side that shows that her move to a solo act really let her move into more sophisticated material. There are definitely some dance tracks like "Music Is My Life" but the real highlights are mellow tunes like "What'cha Doing To Me" and "You & Me". Other titles include "It's Alright With Me", "Love & Learn", "My Best Was Good Enough", and "Deliver The Funk". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Robert LakatosBut Not For Me ... LP
Sawano/Jazz Shinsekai (Japan), 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Robert Lakatos sounds beautiful here – really spinning out some imaginative sounds on the keys, in a trio that also includes Christian Lakatos on bass and Dre Pallemaerts on drums! The set was recorded in Germany, but has that superb sound of the best Sawano label material – work that really advances that strong commitment to piano trio modes that the Japanese scene had in the 70s, but with a much wider-ranging array of global artists – most of whom, like Lakatos, are under-discovered and get great exposure from the label. Titles include "LT", "Giggin", "Confirmation", "Here There & Everywhere", "Bolivia", "But Not For Me", and "Szakcissimo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful Japanese pressing – heavy cover and vinyl!)

A sweet collection and one the label could have called The Diverse Yusef Lateef if that title wasn't already taken. This anthology goes way past Yusef Lateef's Atlantic years and includes material recorded for Savoy, Prestige, and Impulse – it even has a track recorded with Grant Green for Blue Note! CD

✨✧ Hubert LawsThen There Was Light Vol 1 (aka In The Beginning) ... LP
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Moody work from one of the most groundbreaking flute players of the 70s – and a real standout in the legendary catalog of CTI Records! Hubert Laws was not only richly talented, but he was also capable of a large number of styles – and this double-length set for CTI has him moving past the electric funky jazz that was the usual manner of the label. The set features backing by a range of different keyboardists – from Bob James, to Clare Fisher, to Richard Tee – plus tenor by Ronnie Laws, percussion by Airto, drums by Steve Gadd, and guitar by Gene Bertonicini. All tracks are long, and the material spans funk, jazz, and even a bit of classically influenced playing. Titles include "In The Beginning", "Restoration", "Gymnopedie 1", "Airegin", and "Come Ye Disconsolate". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some edge wear and a bit of pen in front.)
