✨✧ Toshiko Yonekawa, Kiyoshi Yamaya, & Contemporary Sound OrchestraTapestry – Koto & The Occident Country ... LP
Columbia/Cinedelic (Italy), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredibly cool use of the koto – that stringed Japanese instrument that got some great reworking in the 70s, thanks to hip records like this! The instrument is set up here amidst some sophisticated larger arrangements – in a way that almost takes off from some of the Dorothy Ashby material on Cadet Records, but which also has a richness in sound that echoes some European soundtrack albums too – gentle grooves with warm currents that are mighty nice throughout – as keyboards, guitar, and even a bit of vibes come into the mix to really update the setting for the ancient instrument! The whole thing comes off with a sound that's surprisingly soulful at times – and titles include "Yagi Bushi", Otemoyan", "Mamuro Gawa Ondo", "Gujo Bushi", "Nishinjo Bushi", "Ume No Uta Genka", "Itsuki No Komori Uta", and "Akita Obako". ✨✧ Toshiko Yonekawa, Kiyoshi Yamaya, & Contemporary Sound OrchestraTapestry – Koto & The Occident Hillside ... LP
Columbia/Cinedelic (Italy), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A deceptively groovy record – one that, like the other two in this hip series, hides some very cool sounds behind a relatively unassuming cover! Toshiko Yonekawa plays the Japanese koto, but the setting here is very different than the spare, folksy mode of earlier koto records – as arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya brings in a hip blend of jazz instrumentation and strings – using keyboards, vibes, guitar, and other instruments to update the sound, and give the whole thing a slinky 70s groove – bridging generations in Japanese music, with some great cinematic funk elements at times – on titles that include "Kariboshikiri Uta", "Tabaruzaka", "Iya No Kohiki Uta", "Takeda No Komori Uta", "Hietsuki Bushi", "Mogami Gawa Funa Uta", and "Aizu Bandai San". ✨✧ Toshiko Yonekawa, Kiyoshi Yamaya, & Contemporary Sound OrchestraTapestry – Koto & The Occident Sea ... LP
Columbia/Cinedelic (Italy), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest Japanese albums of the 70s to blend classic instrumentation and contemporary elements – a record that's got plenty of the koto promised in the title, but which also serves up the music with a wonderfully rich vibe throughout! The style is more in sophisticated soundtrack territory, but with an undercurrent of funk underneath the larger arrangements – ala David Axelrod – and next to the koto played on each track by Toshiko Yonekawa, you'll find some wonderful basslines, vibes, and even some occasional tenor as well – all wrapped together in these really stunning arrangements from Kiyoshi Yamaya! The whole thing's as beautiful as it is groovy – and titles include "Tanchame", "Konpira Fune Fune", "Oshima Bushi", "Kaigara Bushi", "Sado Okesa", and "Tosa No Sunayama". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ New York Contemporary FiveNew York Contemporary Five Vol 1 (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Sonet/Teichiku (Japan), 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from one of the greatest groups of the New York avant scene of the 60s – the legendary New York Contemporary Five, a combo that features Archie Shepp on tenor, John Tchicai on alto, Don Cherry on cornet, Don Moore on bass, and JC Moses on drums! This 1963 recording, originally done in Copenhagen, is one of the group's most lasting statements – a bold, bracing bit of jazz that seems to pick up energy from Ornette Coleman's dimming flame, prefacing Albert Ayler inferno to come, wrapped up with some of the sensitivity of Eric Dolphy in his final years – a record that rivals the best that any of those three players had to offer. Shepp's got an intensity that almost blows away his Impulse sides, and Tchicai has hardly ever sounded better – and even Cherry seems to be unlocking a whole new side of his spirit in the process of the recording! Titles include "Mick", "The Funeral", "When Will The Blues Leave", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "OC", and "Cisum". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Archie Shepp & The New York Contemporary 5Archie Shepp In Europe ... LP
Delmark, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from one of the greatest groups of the New York avant scene of the 60s! This French set (probably from the late 60s or early 70s) brings live tracks recorded in Copenhagen in 1963 – and which rarely every show up in any form, even on reissue. The group features Shepp, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Don Moore, and JC Moses – and the work ranks with some of Shepp's best-ever, and has that dark well-managed "new thing" sound of his best early work on Impulse. In fact, we'd rank these two LPs right up there with some of the best avant garde jazz of the 60s – which is a shame when you consider how rare it is to find. Titles include "Mik", "The Funeral", "Cisum", and "When Will The Blues Leave". US issue of the original recording by Polydor. LP, Vinyl record album

Stan KentonContemporary Concepts ... LP
Capitol, 1955. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Contemporary concepts that are as bold today as they were when first released in the mid 50s! Stan's at the height of his powers here – working with the brilliant Bill Holman to craft some incredible versions of tunes that had become jazz standards, tired ones at that – but which explode into new colors and tones in the hands of the Kenton magic! Titles include sublime readings of "What's New", "Stella By Starlight", "Yesterdays", "Cherokee", and "I've Got You Under My Skin". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1953. Very Good ... $38.99
A classic early 10" release from guitarist Barney Kessel – played in that spacious style he virtually invented back in the 50s! Barney's tone has a bit more edge here than in later years, but the sound is still totally great – airy, but never sleepy – and featuring work by Bud Shank on flute and alto, Arnold Ross on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, and Harry Babasin on bass. Titles include "Bernardo", "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Salute To Charlie Christian", and "Vicky's Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly ManneMy Fair Lady (Contemporary) ... LP
Contemporary, 1956. Near Mint- ... $18.99
A key early entry in the "jazz meets Broadway" genre – and a record that was so successful, it went onto inspire countless imitations! Shelly Manne's working here in a lightly playful trio setting – alongside Andre Previn on piano and Leroy Vinnegar on bass, in a reading of tunes originally composed for the musical My Fair Lady. Given Manne's talent for unusual rhythms and melodic percussion, the session's got a bit of a whimsical edge that takes it way past the core compositions that most listeners already knew – into a realm that allows for much great improvisation and play with the melodies. Previn's nicely restrained on the keys, and Vinnegar adds in a good sense of bottom to the set – and titles include "Get Me To The Church On Time", "I Could Have Dance All Night", "Ascot Gavotte", "Show Me", and "With A Little Bit Of Luck". Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins & The Contemporary Leaders ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint- ... $34.99
One of Sonny's brilliant west coast sessions for Contemporary – records that shouldn't sparkle as much as they do, but which actually stand with his best work of the 50s! Sonny's blowing in front of a session of "leaders" that includes Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne, and Victor Feldman, who plays vibes on one track. Sonny's the real leader here, though – as his bold, proud tenor tone really takes front seat, carving lines that never get tired, bringing a sparkle into tunes like "You", "How High The Moon", "I've Found A New Baby", "The Song Is You", and "I've Told Ev'ry Little Star". Heck, even with songs like those, the album should be weak – but there's an undeniable magic that really makes it great! LP, Vinyl record album

Metro/MGM, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groovy 60s session from vibist Cal Tjader – and an excellent little Latin set, with a mixture of bossa nova and Latin jazz that goes way beyond the promise of the title! The great Clare Fischer arranged the set – and if you know his work with Cal, you know that he's got a wonderful approach to jazz that works perfectly with Tjader's unique phrasing – a spacious sensibility, and a great sense of timing – one that always ensures the tunes sparkle with a sweetly stepping groove. Fischer plays piano on the record – and other players include Laurindo Almeida on guitar, Paul Horn on reeds, Johnny Rae on timbales, and Milt Holland on percussion. Bainbridge, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great work from one of the hippest jazz contemporaries of the late 60s – trumpeter Kenny Dorham, a player who was really coming into his own by the time of this album! The record has Kenny with a nice sort of edge – not as boldly experimental as his 60s work for Blue Note, but definitely pushing things forward from the 50s – shaking off the sweet for a bit more bite, and working with a great lineup that includes Steve Kuhn on piano, Charles Davis on baritone sax, and either Jimmy Garrison or Butch Warren on bass. Kuhn and Davis really bring some interesting elements to the record – and titles include "Tonica", "Monk's Mood", "In Your Own Sweet Way", and "Horn Salute". LP, Vinyl record album

The group on the date is part of the strength of the record – with Conte Candoli on trumpet, Emil Richards on vibes, Paul Horn on flute, and Victor Feldman on piano – with loads of great percussion and guitar interplay on the set, plus some excellent use of flute and vibes – all of which makes for the sort of session that really translates the Brazilian groove into the best sort of sound the LA scene was cutting at the time! Nice, light, and dancing rhythms – and titles that include "Love", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Latin Dance #1", "Lady Byrd", and "One Note Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic work from Riddle – a bandleader who always did great work with other singers, but who could really be sleepy on his own, until the late 60s, when he started to change his groove a lot, and really open up his sound! This album's a perfect example of that move – as it's got organ, electric guitar, and Fender bass mixed with Riddle's already well-arranged horn sextion – creating a lilting groove that really kicks the best tracks along nicely, giving them a slightly funky sound that's similar to the work that Riddle later did for MPS. Titles include "Gentle On My Mind", "Tell Someone You Love Them", "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Where Do I Go", and a great cover of "Light My Fire". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ James TatumContemporary Jazz Mass ... LP
JTTP/Be! (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A jazz mass, but unlike any other variation on the theme that's ever been recorded – thanks to a very righteous performance from James Tatum – who makes the whole thing feel much more like an organic spiritual jazz set than anything you'd ever find in a church! James himself plays both Fender Rhodes and piano – at the helm of a progressive combo from the Detroit underground of the early 70s – a group that features soprano sax from Theodore Buckner, trumpet from Judge Gray, tenor and alto from Louis Barnett, and trombone from Norman O'Gara – all lesser-known players, but who work beautifully alongside James' lead! The Fender Rhodes work is wonderful – as great as you'll find on any other record of the time – and there's also two singers who add to the sound – but step out at all the right moments to let the solos open up. Titles include "Gloria", "Offertory", "Holy Holy Holy", "Amen", "Lamb Of God", and "Communion" – but the overall sound is way more than you'd expect from those titles! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny RollinsGo West – The Contemporary Records Albums (Way Out West/Contemporary Leaders/Contemporary Alternate Takes) (3LP set) ... LP
Contemporary/Craft, Late 50s. New Copy 3LP set ... Out Of Stock
Two classic albums from the great Sonny Rollins – both made during some time on the LA scene of the late 50s, and matched here with a more obscure third album that issued alternate sides from the sessions! First up is the classic Way Out West – a set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! Despite Rollins' silly look on the cover, and the album's overall "western" theme, the session's a brilliant one – right up there with Sonny's strongest trio sides of the late 50s, and a key link in a string of excellent recordings for Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside! The lack of a piano really opens up the style of the set – letting Sonny explore freely on his solos, while Brown's bass and Manne's drums do more than enough to keep the rhythms going on their own. Solos aren't as "out" as on the Village Vanguard sessions, but certainly every bit as inspired – and titles include "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Solitude", "Come, Gone", "Way Out West", and "Wagon Wheels". Next is Sonny Rollins & The Contemporary Leaders – one of Sonny's brilliant west coast sessions for Contemporary – records that shouldn't sparkle as much as they do, but which actually stand with his best work of the 50s! Last is Contemporary Alternate Takes – a great collection of alternate takes from Sonny's landmark recordings for Contemporary Records in the late 50s – material recorded in LA with an easier-swinging groove than some of his New York work, in a style that let Sonny blow in round, warm, and really open tones – almost foreseeing his work for RCA in the mid 60s. Players include Ray Brown, Shelly Manne, Victor Feldman, and Barney Kessel – and the set features alternate takes of "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Come Gone", "Way Out West", "The Song Is You", and "You". ✨✧ Benny CarterJazz Giant ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A well-titled album from the great Benny Carter – already a giant in jazz, thanks to countless years blowing the alto sax as a leader and sideman in other groups – really opening up a fresh chapter of his career in a great run of smaller combo work in the second half of the 50s! This set's a great demonstration of the way that Carter was able to bring an older jazz experience into more modern modes in the postwar years – an edge on his horn that's still one of the most distinct voices on the alto, yet very different than Charlie Parker or other modernists who came after him – exquisitely matched here in a combo that includes Ben Webster on tenor, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Barney Kessel on guitar. Rosolino and Webster drop out on two tracks, piano is by Andre Previn or Jimmy Rowles, and the group's completed by Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me", "Blue Lou", "A Walkin Thing", and "Old Fashioned Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette ColemanSomething Else!!!! ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at another level, the record's still way darn bolder than just about anything coming out of LA at the time – proof that amidst all the cool jazz ruminations of the 50s, there was a second wave of modernism about to explode! The group here features Don Cherry on trumpet, Walter Norris on piano, Don Payne on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and while the core harmelodic rhythmic approach isn't always in place, it's more than made up for by some surprisingly free energy. Titles include "Invisible", "The Blessing", "Alpha", and "The Sphinx". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary/Craft, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
Tomorrow may be the question, but the record screams "today!" – and even this many years after its recording, this early set by Ornette Coleman has an energy and presence that cannot be denied! The sound here is kind of a rougher take on the mode that would gel more strongly on Ornette's Atlantic albums – but even so, it's still incredibly fresh, and well worth seeking out – especially as an example of the sharper edges that were bursting forth from the once-cool west coast scene! Coleman's on alto sax and Don Cherry is on trumpet – but they're not joined by their more familiar associates, and are instead working with a more conventional rhythm team that includes either Percy Heath or Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – all clearly trying to make a bit of sense of Ornette's approach here, but in a way that also creates a great sense of tension on the record! Tracks are shortish, with great solos by Ornette and Cherry – and titles include "Tomorrow Is The Question", "Endless", "Rejoicing", "Lorraine", "Turnaround", "Tears Inside", and "Giggin". Counce didn't cut many albums as a leader, but all of them are pretty darn great – and done with a bit more edge than the cool jazz of the LA scene – a bit more open, with a strong focus on the solos on some of the album's longer tracks too! Solos include great work on tenor by Harold Land – who's really coming into his own here – plus Jack Sheldon on trumpet, and Carl Perkins on piano – a player who would pass away not long after this set. A really pivotal album from the great Art Farmer – a late 50s session that has him finding that sense of tone and timing that would dominate his work in years to come! Art was already great by the time of this set, but he's also got maybe a more personal, almost poetic vibe at times – starting to realize that the space between the notes is as important as the notes themselves, while still maybe holding onto a slight bit of the bite of his earliest recordings too. The group is a very well-matched trio of easygoing modernists – Hank Jones on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – on titles that include "Too Late Now", "Back In The Cage", "And Now", "Stablemates", "Earth", and "Nita". Art Farmer & Benny Golson JazztetBack To The City ... LP
Contemporary, 1986. Very Good+ ... $13.99
A tremendous comeback for the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet – recording here in the mid 80s with original members Farmer, Golson, and Curtis Fuller – plus tremendous rhythm support from the trio of Mickey Tucker, Ray Drummon, and Marvin Smitty Smith! The session has less of the tightly snapping groove that was the initial Jazztet calling card in the 60s – and comes across with some of the warmer, more chromatic tones that showed up on the group's last few recordings – and even more so in Art Farmer's work for many years to come. Tracks are all longish, and filled with many interesting twists and turns – and overall the album recalls the brilliant economy of Farmer's best work from the period, with some of the subtle soul that made Golson a player to keep an ear on strongly during the 80s. Titles include "From Dream To Dream", "Back To The City", "Vas Simeon", "Write Soon", and "Without Delay/Time Speaks". LP, Vinyl record album

A noteworthy session from pianist Hampton Hawes – a rare quartet session from the 50s (at a time when Hawes was mostly working in trios) – and also a three volume set of releases, all recorded in the space of a single night! The album is truly an All Night Session – as the material here was recorded during the night of November 12 and early morning hours of November 13, 1956 – with an unusual group that features Hawes on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, Bruz Freeman on drums, and Jim Hall on guitar! Hall's ringing tones are a perfect partner for Hawes' light approach to the keys – and the relaxed, extended nature of the recording has both players really opening up on some of the album's longish tracks. Barney Kessel/Shelly Manne/Ray BrownPoll Winners – Straight Ahead ... LP
Contemporary, 1975. Very Good+ ... $13.99
A rare 70s reunion for the Poll Winners trio of Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, and Shelly Manne – one that has them all looking a bit shaggy on the cover, but still plenty darn tight in the grooves of the record! There's a really nice change here from the earlier sound of the group – longer tracks than before, played with a bit more sense of freedom by all players involved – but still with that tight comraderie that made the trio so great in the first place. Manne's rhythms are showing some of the looser modes of his later years – and that space is filled nicely by Kessel's still firm guitar lines and Brown's increasingly warm bass. Titles include "Blue Boy", "Caravan", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "Two Cents", and "One Foot Off The Curb". LP, Vinyl record album

Harold LandFox (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Contemporary/Craft, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
A key moment in the west coast hardbop scene – and one of the greatest early records from saxophonist Harold Land! The group's a really striking one – with the unique Dupree Bolton on trumpet, a great player that we really only know from this set – plus Herbie Lewis on bass, Frank Butler on drums, and the great Elmo Hope on piano! Hope's piano really gives the set an edgey finish that seems to bring out even more dark tones in Land's horn than usual – and another aspect of the session that's worth noting is its early production by David Axelrod – who really seems to have an ear for making all the elements gel together perfectly. There's a really free-thinking sound here that makes the album stand out from other LA work of the time – and titles include "The Fox", "Sims-A-Plenty", "One Down", and "One Second, Please". Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint- ... $19.99 29.99
Shelly picks up on a very successful format for his trio of the late 50s – begun with the My Fair Lady album, and followed through with this one – a batch of jazz-based readings of tracks from the hit Broadway musical based on the comic strip Lil Abner. Apart from that bit of history, and the goofy cover, which has Manne dressed as Abner, the overall feel is straight trio work in Shelly's most popular mode of the time – with Andre Previn on the ivories and Leroy Vinnegar on bass. Titles include "Matrimonial Stomp", "Jubilation T Cornpone", "Oh Happy Day", "Namely You", "Past My Prime", and "Progress Is The Root Of All Evil". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! The sound here is really tremendous – boldly leaping forth from the keys with a strength that's really surprising – but still sensitive enough to slide in a few more contemplative notes when the moment calls – sometimes while Newborn is still racing down the keys at breakneck speed! Rhythm on both sides is great – with Paul Chambers & Philly Joe Jones on side one, and Sam Jones and Louis Hayes on side two – and titles include "Cheryl", "Manteca", "Oleo", "Dahoud", "Cabu", and "For Carl". One of Art Pepper's most classic sets for Contemporary – a record that puts him in the company of the Miles Davis rhythm section – Jimmy Cobb on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, and Wynton Kelly on piano – who make up 3/5 of a quintet that also includes trumpeter Conte Candoli! The tracks open up a bit more from some of Pepper's 50s work in LA – arguably a bit tighter at times, and possibly a bit more "classic" – at least to longtime fans of the set. There's a bit less edge here than on some of Art's other 50s dates, but the album's still a great one – with titles that are a mixture of originals like "Getting Together", "Diane", and "Bijou The Poodle", plus a few other strong numbers, like Chambers' "Whims Of Chambers" and Dory & Andre Previn's "Why Are We Afraid?" Excellent small group material from modern alto genius Art Pepper – a set that might well be our favorite of all the classic albums he cut for Contemporary Records! The album's got quite a strange title – Smack Up, a very strange choice, given Pepper's well-known experience as a junkie – and the set features some edgey work that really pushes Art away from the sweeter sounds of a few years before – material that maybe reflects some of the troubles he'd been going through, which shows up in the music in some really great ways. The group is a lean quintet – with Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Pete Jolly on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Frank Butler on drums – and there's some slightly off-kilter tracks on the set that really make it sparkle, including Duane Tatro's "Maybe Next Year", Ornette's "Tears Inside", and Harold Land's "Smack Up" – the irony of which, we're sure, was not lost on Art Pepper! This set still features Manne on drums – and Red Mitchell on bass – but it's also got a thoughtful feel that takes it way past any cookie cutter expectations you might have – really recapturing the genius of the Lady record, in the way the trio works with triangulated action to come up with unusual rhythms and melodies for the tunes. Contemporary/OJC, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A classic set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! A stunning hardbop set from drummer Shelly Manne – a player most folks associate with more arranged jazz, or cooler modes of the LA scene of the 50s – but a player who was already starting to open up and forge new roads by the end of that decade! Shelly became a surprising proponent of hardbop modes with a few key records like this – and the live setting has Manne leading a great group with really searing solo work that's very different than west coast cool jazz modes normally associated with both the drummer and the Contemporary label! The album features key work from trumpeter Joe Gordon – stunning work, recorded in the years before his too-soon death – and tenorist Richie Kamuca really opens up too – in a combo that also has Victor Feldman on piano and Monty Budwig on bass – going through very long tunes that are filled with extended solo space. The record's the third in a legendary early run for the Contemporary label – trio material that broke Hawes out of the box and firmly put his rich talents on the keys at the top of the list of the best players in jazz. The sound's an amazing blend of jazz idioms at the time – with some of the flourishes of the Peterson or Jamal crowd, but often a tighter, almost rootsier bottom in the rhythms – a touch of the LA soul jazz sound, showing up here quite early! ✨✧ Hampton HawesHere & Now ... LP
Contemporary, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work from that hip 60s period when Hampton Hawes was really stretching out his sound – building on his already-great style of the 50s, by adding in more complex lines and unusual tones – creating far more depth in his music than ever before! In a way, there's a bit of a Bill Evans quality to the record – that contemplative love of sound that always made Bill's records so great. Yet Hawes is definitely his own man on the date too – because he also breaks out with bolder moments than Evans ever would have done – letting some of his older LA groove come into play with his newer ideas, in blend that holds us rapt with attention throughout. Rhythm players are great too – Chuck Israels on bass and Donald Bailey on drums – and titles include "The Girl From Ipanema", "Dear Heart", "Rhonda", "Chim Chim Cheree", and "Days Of Wine & Roses". Contemporary, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
We love Joe Henderson's 70s sides, and though this is reaching the end of the decade, it still smokes. Joe sounds great, with his raw edge still intact, playing nice far reaching solos that never leave the pocket. The set opens with "Y Todavia La Quiero", a nice groover with a feel like an uptempo "Love Supreme" set to cook rather than open you up spiritually. Chick Corea, Tony Dumas and Peter Erskine are the band, though Richard Davis and Tony Williams guest on two cuts. The set also includes one of our favorite Corea compositions, 'Yes, My Dear", plus the title track, "Crimson Lake" and "My One And Only Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Much more interesting than some of Barney's earlier records – possibly because he's working with a hip, flexible combo – one that includes Marv Jenkins on piano and flute, Jerry Good on bass, and Stan Popper on drums. The tracks are a mix of groovers and mellow numbers – with Jenkins breaking out the flute on the sparer ones – and titles include "The Good Lil Man", "Spanish Scenery", "Pedal Point", and "New Rhumba". Contemporary, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The classic Poll Winners trio of Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, and Shelly Manne explore the scene of jazz at the start of the 60s – turning their already popular formation towards some of the bigger jazz numbers of the time! The approach has the group turning nicely on titles by Ray Bryant, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Ornette Coleman, and others – working Kessel's round guitar tones around some very sharp rhythm from Brown and Manne. Titles include "Doodlin", "So What", "The Duke", "Little Suzie", "This Here", and "The Golden Striker". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
This album was the 7th in the Contemporary series of "Shelly Manne & His Men", but it's also easily the best, and features some of the most exciting playing of any of Manne's groups. The success of the whole album comes down to Charlie Mariano, who wrote a large number of the tracks, and who's at the height of his powers on alto here – hitting a beautiful mix of icy modernism and Boston soul, in the tradition of some of his best Bethlehem recordings. Side one features an extended work called "The Gambit", which has a nice blend of far-reaching soloing and tight jazzy rhythm. Other titles include "Blue Gnu", "Hugo Hurwhey", and "Tom Brown's Buddy" – and players include Stu Williamson and Russ Freeman. LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty darn great record – the first full length LP cut by Shelly, issued by Contemporary in the mid 50s, and pulling together side from sessions in 1953, some of which were issued previously, others of which appear for the first time here. The tracks are short and playful – very much in the "west coast sound" noted in the title, with Shelly playing the kit in a creative and lyrical way, joined by horn work by players that include Joe Maini, Bill Holman, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Enevoldsen, Art Pepper, and Bob Cooper. Titles include "Gazelle", "Sweets", "Mallets", "Fugue", "Grasshopper", and "Afrodesia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Shelly ManneSwinging Sounds In Stereo (aka More Swinging Sounds) ... LP
Contemporary, 1956. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the few great records that alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano cut with Shelly Manne – and a heck of a wonderful record that really set a new tone for Shelly's groove at the time! Things here are a bit looser and freer than before – longer tracks with more room for solos to really take flight – yet still a sense of modern arrangement that marked the Manne sound from its inception. The group's a quintet with Stu Williamson on trumpet, Russ Freeman on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Mariano on some especially nice alto solos – and the interplay between Charlie and Stu easily rivals the best Bethlehem recordings by the pair at the time. Titles include the excellent 10 minute "Pint Of Blues", an original by Charlie – plus Bill Holman's extended "Quartet", and versions of "The Wind", "Moose The Mooche", and "Tommyhawk". ✨✧ Shelly Manne & His MenShelly Manne & His Men At The Blackhawk Vol 4 ... LP
Contemporary, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Tracks on this fourth volume include "Cabu", "Just Squeeze Me", and "Nightingale". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked set from the late 50s show-meets-jazz run of Shelly Manne and Andre Previn – a cool jazz instrumental take on the score to Bells Are Ringing! As with other Manne/Previn pairings, the music is incredibly sprightly – some of the best jazz Andre ever recorded in the 50s, with piano lines that are a lot more fluid and freewheeling than on his mood music sets for other labels – and Manne's careful approach to percussion makes for lots of light, lyrical rhythms – which have plenty of support in spirit from the wonderful bass of Red Mitchell. Titles include two versions of "The Party's Over" – one slow, one as a "party" version – plus "I Met A Girl", "Just In Time", "It's A Perfect Relationshi", "Is It A Crime", "Mu Cha Cha", and "Long Before I Knew You". Great early work from bassist Red Mitchell – one of his few sets as a leader in the US, before going on to a wide range of records overseas! The lineup is unusual – as Red is working with a group that features the great James Clay on flute and tenor, alongside Lorraine Geller on piano, and Billy Higgins on drums – and tracks are longer than usual for a Contemporary Records session – which gives Clay some moments to stretch out, spurred on by the lively drumming of Higgins. Contemporary, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Previously unreleased material recorded by Phineas Newborn for Contemporary Records – a set that has him ringing out the notes in ways that are almost earthier than in earlier years – sometimes bluesy, but other times with almost a more traditional approach to the keys! There's a timeless sensibility here that's a bit hard to describe – and you can definitely hear that Phineas has been soaking it up strongly over the years, and works hard to get his musical vision out in the studio – sometimes sacrificing his lighter touch for a stiffer, almost startling approach to the keys. Ray Brown is on bass and Elvin Jones is on drums – and titles include "Sugar Ray", "Ill Wind", "Back Home", "Pamela", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "Love For Sale". LP, Vinyl record album

Pretty incredible work from Lennie Niehaus – one of his seminal albums for Contemporary – nearly all of which were as poorly titled as this one, but equally worth checking out! This side has Lennie grooving on alto – blowing in a tighter, harder style than most west coasters – more in the realm of Herb Geller or Art Pepper than some of his other contemporaries on the instrument – really shining in a larger group that includes Bill Holman, Jimmy Giuffre, Stu Williamson, and Pete Jolly. Arrangements are beautiful, and there's a lot more soul on the set than you might first expect! A legendary album from alto genius Art Pepper – a set in which he meets up with the famous Miles Davis rhythm section of the time – Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a trio of players who really help send the album over the top! There's maybe a bit more of a crackle in the rhythms here than on some of Art's other 50s records – which makes for a classic meeting of east and west coast scenes, and some especially nice raspy lines from Pepper – delivered at that level that always made his music of this period so nicely complex – outwardly cool, but with some seething energy at the core. Titles include a definitive take on Art's classic "Straight Life" – plus "Waltz Me Blues", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and "Star Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent 70s side from Art Pepper – recorded with a West Coast rhythm section that includes Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, and Shelly Manne! The trio all play here with a remarkable intensity, given the date of the session – and although the production's got that later, crisper Contemporary tone, it still lets Art's horn come through beautifully! Pepper's singular voice and beautiful phrasing are still intact, and the quartet cooks nicely on half a dozen numbers, mostly Pepper originals – "Ophelia", "Here's That Rainy Day", "What Laurie Likes", "Mr Yohe, "Lost Life", and "Samba Mom-Mom". ✨✧ Andre Previn & Russ FreemanDouble Play! ... LP
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A goofy title and cover – but a really unique session of two-piano jazz, recorded with Russ Freeman and Andre Previn on the keys, plus only the drums of Shelly Manne to provide additional support! The sound is really great – and Previn's especially wonderful here, really stretching out to meet the harder style of Freeman. Both players also seem really inspired by Manne's drum work – and in a way, it almost feels like Shelly's directing the piano from the drum kit, especially on the more uptempo numbers. The notes do a very detailed job of breaking down the piano work, so that you can figure out who's soloing when – and titles include "Who's On First", "In The Cellar Blues", "Called On Account Of Rain", "Fungo", "Safe At Home", and "Double Play". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsWay Out West ... LP
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A classic set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! The lineup is as majestic as the music – and Woody's trumpet is joined by alto and soprano sax from Gary Bartz, electric piano from Geroge Cables, tenor and flute from Benny Maupin, bass from Clint Houston, and drums from Lenny White – all very hip players who really help the record soar! If you dig the early work of Gary Bartz, or some of Shaw's more soul jazz outings of the early 70s – you'll definitely dig this one – and the double-length nature of the record gives all players plenty of room to do their thing! Arguably one of the best 50s jazz sessions on west coast powerhouse label Contemporary – superbly recorded, and done in a format that really breaks from the format of a lot of LA jazz at the time! The whole thing's incredibly relaxed – really allowing for a lot of space to hear the playing of leader/bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and making for some great small group interplay between musicians that include Victor Feldman on vibes, Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Teddy Edwards on tenor, and Carl Wilson on piano. The group features Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Butler on drums – and tracks are all longish, and live-feeling – with that sense of fragility that marked some of Webster's later recordings in this mode, and even further deepened the humanity in his tone. And while the recording quality is definitely "live" at times, Ben's tone comes through loud and clear – different than on some of the tighter Verve recordings of a few years before, but in a way that's really great.
