One of the coolest collaborations of Dave Brubeck's years at Columbia Records – and one of the greatest jazz sessions from vocalist Jimmy Rushing too! On paper, the modernist Brubeck and Kansas City roots singer Rushing would seem to be a very unlikely pair – but by this time in his career, Jimmy had gotten extremely inventive and was very open to new ideas – and manages to lend his amazing vocals to some sublime instrumental backdrops from the Brubeck quartet! Dave unlocks a whole host of bluesy tones for the session, and really matches Rushing's energy – and Paul Desmond's alto sounds somewhat unusual in that setting, but with a real appeal too – a very unusual sound for a record like this. Time Out is easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty of waves with their creative yet swinging approaches to modern jazz – heard on a number of successful albums for Fantasy and Columbia in the 50s. But with this record, they really knocked one out of the park – blending Desmond's cool alto, Brubeck's unusual piano phrasing, Joe Morello's melodic drum work, and Eugene Wright's pulsating bass into a waltzing, almost modal groove that crossed over to many camps at the time! The classics "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo Ala Turk" were both hits on their own – but all titles are great, and include "Kathy's Waltz", "Strange Medow Lark", "Everybody's Jumpin", and "Pick Up Sticks". A groovy, far reaching blend of moddish funk rock, organ groovers, and sounds both spacey and laidback from the Shadows – a mix of rock & soul instrumental covers tight arrangements that leave just enough room for the players to bring just enough intensity to their parts! The instrumentation is very impressive, with the legendary Alan Hawkshaw lighting up his Hammond organ, but it's impressive stuff all the way, with some innovative production touches, too. A totally wonderful little record – not just a funky 70s soundtrack, but an excellent jazz outing as well – thanks to the talents of Hubert Laws on flute and Earl Klugh on guitar! Patrick Williams wrote and arranged the whole set – and he merges his jazzier roots with some of his sublime 70s soundtrack skills – in a mix that's still lean enough to keep the album right up there with Laws' best from the time, but also give things a bit more of a funky punch, too. A great late 70s set from Weather Report – a record that's certainly got more polish than the early years, but which still sounds plenty darn great to our ears – thanks to a really free-flowing sense of imagination! The tunes here have a wonderfully chunky sort of approach to the groove – that kind of building, pulsating quality that always marked Weather Report as organic, even when electric – and which gave their music a sense of soul, even when it was sometimes smooth. There's enough dark corners here to shake off any of the more commercial touches – and it's wonderful to hear the way that Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul have evolved the original Weather Report ethos into something new and fresh. A sweet, stretched-out session from saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera – one that still has a bit of the Latin roots of the past, but which also hits a more spacious style that almost reminds us of the best CTI sides of the early 70s! The album's recorded live at San Francisco's Keystone Korner – and Paquito's playing alto sax throughout, working with a hip sextet that includes Carlos Franzetti on keyboards – bringing in some warm, soulful touches to the music that are totally great! Other players include Claudio Roditi on trumpet and trombone and Daniel Ponce on percussion – and all tracks are nice and long, with titles that include "Song For Maura", "Red On Red", "Deja Vu", "Zanaith", and "Estamos Ah". A full-on set from the mighty Fania All-Stars – a session that matches some of the larger arrangements of their Columbia Records albums, but which also returns the group to more of a salsa-focused groove! Tracks are somewhat short – none of the jam sessions of the group's earliest years – but the sound is top-shelf all the way through, and a lot more classic than you'd guess from the cheesy cocaine image on the cover! Group members include Papo Luca on piano, Nicky Marrero on timbales, Roberto Roena on bongos, Yomo Toro on cuatro, and Lewis Khan on trombone – and singers include Hector Lavoe, Adalberto Santiago, Willie Colon, Ismael Rivera, and Celia Cruz. A well-titled album – given that Taj Mahal's music is always pretty darn rootsy – and this time around, he's also adding in a bit of Jamaican roots too, thanks to production help from Bob Marley and Aston Barrett of The Wailers! The pair help Taj out on a few numbers, mixing in some reggae rhythms with his bluesy lead – another compelling combination of modes that marks the creative apex of Taj Mahal's years on Columbia. Quite an interesting session from Bud Powell – a tribute to Thelonious Monk, recorded in Paris in 1961, but not issued until 1965, shortly before his death. Cannonball Adderley was the producer on the session, and it's got the same sort of groundbreaking approach as some of the other Cannonball-produced albums for Riverside from the same stretch – a bit more farther reaching than the players' work in an ordinary setting. Powell's take on the Monk sound is a very unusual one – a bit more fragile and tentative than Monk's own interpretations of the material, but performed with an equal commitment to a modern sound overall. Backing is from Kenny Clarke on drums and Pierre Michelot on bass – and titles include "No Name Blues", "Ruby My Dear", "Off Minor", "Squatty", and "Thelonious". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice Prestige 2-fer collecting two early sides Mongo cut for Fantasy in the late 50s. The first, released under the title Mongo, is a no-nonsense batch of Latin jazz tracks, arranged by himself and Francisco Aguabella, who's sort of the co-leader of the group on the set! Players include Emil Richards, Paul Horn, Armando Pereza, Carlos Vidal, and Willie Bobo – and as you can imagine by that lineup, there's plenty of heavy duty percussive action! Jose Chombo Silva plays a bit of tenor – and titles include "Chano Pozo", "Mazacote", "Los Conguitos", and "Afro Blue". Yambu, another of Mongo's great early records, is the second LP of the set. It's got a spooky Afro-Cuban sound, and a great assortment of drummers that includes Francisco Aquabella, Carlos Vidal, Willie Bobo, and Modesto Duran. The overall vibe is much more traditional than Mongo's other albums – and there's none of the pop Latin jazz of his years at Columbia records, or his "Watermelon Man" era at Riverside. A beautiful musical discovery that we'd somehow never managed to hear all these years – the debut of (and possibly only album by) Appaloosa, a group who mix together gentle folk and a bit of strings – in a mode that's strongly resonant with some of Tim Hardin or Tim Buckley's best work of the late 60s! As you can guess from the cover image, the group is pretty young – but they work with a timeless quality beyond their years, a mode that mixes guitar, violin, and cello together as the core instrumentation for the tunes – topped by wonderful vocals from singer Robin Batteau, who has one of those "shoulda been huge" voices that really grab you right away. Al Kooper produced and contributed some instrumentation – but in a really subtle way that respects the band's sound strongly – and titles include "Pascal's Paradox", "Now That I Want You", "Georgia Street", "Rosalie", "Rivers Run To The Sea", "Glossolalia", and "Feathers". Great set that reissues material from 2 live albums that were never properly issued in the US – Miles In Tokyo, recorded in 1964, with Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams; and Miles In Berlin, recorded in 64 as well, with the same group, minus Rivers, plus Wayne Shorter on tenor. The quality is as high as you'd expect – with that Plugged Nickel groove hitting on all burners – and titles include "So What", "All Of You", "Walkin", "Milestones", and "Autumn Leaves". The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and Charlie Rouse – all supported by rhythm from the team of Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums, possibly one of the key factors for the success of the record! The album's comprised of Monk classics like "Little Rootie Tootie", "Thelonious", "Friday The 13th", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Monk's Mood" – all arranged by Hall Overton, a little-remembered modernist from the 50s, but one with a keen dedication towards pushing new sounds from old formats! Overton really keeps the spirit of Monk's music intact here – penning charts that allow for plenty of solo space and the kind of cross-trading lines you'd hear in some of Monk's best multi-horn small group sides for Riverside! Next is Thelonious Monk Quartet Plus Two At The Blackhawk – a stunning pre-Columbia session from Thelonious Monk – a really great live date that has Monk's familiar quartet augmented by west coast players Joe Gordon on trumpet and Harold Land on tenor! Given that Charlie Rouse is already in the group on tenor, the addition of Land's horn makes for a very soulful set – and Gordon's one of those players we love whenever we get a chance to hear him on record, which isn't that often, given how few sessions he cut! A famous European set from Thelonious Monk – recorded early in the 60s with his famous quartet that included Charlie Rouse on tenor! Even at this point before the Columbia sides, Rouse is already amazing – really stretching out in these modern, angular lines that are quite different than any of his recordings a few years before – a perfect match for the inventive piano of Monk, as would later be demonstrated on a host of classic studio recordings. There's an open, spontaneous energy between the pair in this live setting, though – almost like they're working out new ideas, but doing so perfectly – with the bass of John Ore and drums of Frankie Dunlop to round things out.
