Stax is known round the world over for their soulful work – by singers like Otis Redding or Carla Thomas, and instrumental tunes by Booker T & The MGs – but the label was also quite a funky powerhouse – especially as the 60s drew to a close, and the management of the company got a lot hipper, and a heck of a lot more musically open-minded! A swirling array of tones, colors, and sounds – written and arranged by JJ Johnson, conducted by Gunther Schuller, and with Dizzy at the helm, blowing some of his most complicated solos ever. The approach is firmly in the Verve jazz orchestra tradition – and recalls the earlier brilliance of such projects in the hands of Ralph Burns, done here with a great depth of expression, and none of the coldness that you might expect from Schuller's participation. Clearly, there's a Miles/Gil Evans influence here, but the crew retains their identity strongly – and Dizzy's hot tone on the trumpet provides a broder spectrum than Miles ever could. An obscure set of German electronic instrumental work from the start of the 80s – and a set that's maybe got some of the darker, colder sounds of the UK scene of the time, especially the sorts of music that was brewing up from the city of Sheffield! Zeus B Held hits harder and goes deeper than some of his German new wave counterparts – none of the playful modes of the Atatak label crew, and instead a more dystopian use of analog electronics that almost makes you feel like you're trapped in a no man's land between East and West Berlin!
