✨✧ James BookerClassified – Remixed & Expanded ... CD
Rounder, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
Later work from New Orleans legend James Booker – but a set that may well be one of his greatest records ever – a real back to basics effort recorded with a hands-off approach that almost makes you feel like you're catching Booker in some small club down off the Quarter! James plays piano and sings throughout – bringing a special magic to tunes that include a few surprises, mixed with a few of his own numbers too – and half the set features additional backing from Alvin Tyler on tenor, James Singleton on bass, and John Vidacovich on drums. Titles include "Madame X", "Hound Dog", "Classified", "All Around The World", "Bald Head/Tipitina", "Baby Face", and "Three Keys". CD

✨✧ Con Funk ShunLoveshine ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – working here under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". CD

✨✧ Jerry NovacFifth Word ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Weird and wild sounds from Jerry Novac – an artist who fits right in with the openly progressive style of Atlantic's Embryo label at the start of the 70s! The tracks are long and sometimes trippy – and Novac plays piano and organ, and adds vocals – while Buzzy Feitan and Eric Gale add in some guitar – next to drums from John Dzubak. Titles include "I Am A Classified Freed Speak", "Beyond The Look", and "Present 2nd Ave". LP, Vinyl record album
