Angel Bat Dawid & Tha BrothahoodLive ... CD
International Anthem, 2021. Used ... $9.99
Angel Bat Dawid is a completely mesmerizing artist on record, but she's even more mindblowing in a live setting – where she seems to channel the energy of the skies and the planet into her music – brimming over with righteous energy that guides the rest of the group with a hell of a lot of power! Angel plays clarinet, keyboards, and sings throughout – effortlessly shifting between those elements in a group that includes tenor, keyboards, electronics, bass, and lots of drums and percussion – bursting out with an effortless blend of larger conception and improvisation – at a level that may well have Dawid emerging as one of the few folks from Chicago that could ever hope to match the legacy of Sun Ra! That's not saying that Angel is anything like Ra at all – but in a similar way, she immediately comes across as a true visionary, a deeply spiritual talent, and an artist who's following a path that's completely her own. Features material recorded live in Chicago and Berlin – and titles include "Capetown", "Black Family", "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black", "The Wicked Shall Not Prevail", "Melo Deez From Heab'N", "VIKTORious Return", and "Enlightenment". ✨✧ Bobby Bradford & John CarterNo U-Turn – Live in Pasadena 1975 ... CD
Dark Tree (France), 1975. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard music from the legendary team of Bobby Bradford and John Carter – a live California performance from the years after their groundbreaking albums for the Revelation and Flying Dutchman labels – a time when both musicians were at the height of their creative powers! The group has this wonderful double-bass approach – with Roberto Miranda in one channel, and Stanley Carter in the other – as William Jeffrey drives the group on drums – and both Bradford's cornet and Carter's soprano sax and clarinet stretch out with amazing energy! The set begins with the very long "Love's Dream" – one of the freest passages we've ever heard from the players – then comes back inside to pick up a bit more rhythmic structure on other numbers, which definitely make the best of the dual bass players on hand. Titles include "Come Softly", "Comin On", "She", "Circle", and "Love's Dream". CD

✨✧ Buddy RichMercy Mercy – Live At Caesars Palace ... CD
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Buddy at his soulful late 60s best – not content to keep in the same groove as older years, and working here with a great lineup that includes some excellent younger players! Charles Owens is in the group on alto, and the set also features work by Don Menza on tenor, Art Pepper on alto, Pat Labarbera on tenor, and Walter Namuth on guitar. Tracks are long, include some good originals, and have a rollicking sound that never lets up – and which avoids cliche a lot more than you'd think! Titles include "Ode To Billie Joe", "Acid Truth", "Goodbye Yesterday", "Preach & Teach", "Channel 1 Suite", and "Big Mama Cass". CD

✨✧ RamonesLeave Home (Expanded & Remastered) ... CD
Sire/Rhino, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Ramones really caught their classic recorded sound for the first time on Leave Home – the second of their three perfect late 70s milestones. As amazing as the debut is, its two-channel shrieking buzz saw sound bowed nicely to the slightly more digestible but just as cathartic roar of the follow ups. Titles include "California Sun", "Glad To See You Go", "Suzy Is A Headbanger", "Pinhead", "What's Your Game", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", and "I Remember You". Also included on the CD are "Babysitter" and the great "Carbona Not Glue" – previously left off all but the first vinyl pressing to accommodate the minor hit they had in "Rock 'N' Roll High School". The bonus material on this Rhino edition consists of a 16 track, 1976 live recording from the Hollywood Roxy – not bad for a record that only had 15 tracks to begin with! The live set is heavy on tracks from the debut, and includes "Loudmouth", "Beat On The Brat", "Chain Saw", "53rd & 3rd", "Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World", "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", and "Havana Affair". ✨✧ Marker (Andrew Clinkman/Steve Marquette/Macie Stewart/Phil Sudderberg/Ken Vandermark)New Industries ... CD
Audiographic, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking projects we've heard from Ken Vandermark in years – work with a younger group with a sound that seems equally balanced between free jazz, post-punk, and no wave energy – heard here on a set of live material, and a full session recorded in the studio! The quintet features two guitarists – Andrew Clinkman and Steve Marquette, one in each channel of the recording – alongside Macie Stewart on keyboards and violin, Phil Sudderberg on drums, and Ken Vandermark on reeds – all playing together at a level that bristles with the combination of electric and acoustic energy. The studio material is as intense as the live set – and as usual with Vandermark, there's some really surprising influences going into the songs – the live set is dedicated to Elza Soares, the studio one to Robert Bresson. Titles include "Key For 23", "Alphaville #2", "Trance", "L'Argent", "Roulette", "Two Or Three", "Baal", and "Porto". CD
(Out of print, numbered limited edition of 500.)

✨✧ Charles TylerSaga Of The Outlaws ... CD
Nessa, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous 70s album from Charles Tyler – one recorded with a rich, raw tone that's simply mindblowing! Tyler here has all of the deep soul we first came to love during his ESP years, but also a sound that's a bit more focused too – one that's extremely powerful, and boldly righteous – not exactly spiritual jazz, but also not loft jazz either. The sound is wonderful – Tyler's sharp-edged alto out front, in a group with trumpeter Earl Cross – a player who's a really great match in spirit and tone. Other group members include Steve Reid on drums, and bassist Ronnie Boykins and John Ore – players who each play in a different channel of the record! The set is billed as "a polyphonic sonic drama performed live by the Charles Tyler Ensemble" – which is a wonderful summation of the music. CD

✨✧ B-52sCosmic Thing – 30th Anniversary Expanded Edition ... CD
Reprise/Rhino, 1989. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The album that really broke the B52s out of the box – the one that took them from being an underground favorite in the clubs and the party scene, to being the kind of group that finally got the exposure they deserved! Of course, some of the help here comes from superproducers Nile Rodgers and Don Was – who really help the group focus on their hooks and crossover groove – all summed up perfectly on the album's hit "Love Shack" – a tune that still gets heavy play around the globe all these many years later. Other tracks include "Roam", "Channel Z", "Cosmic Thing", "Dry Country", "Topaz", "Follow Your Bliss", and "Bushfire". Includes assorted b sides and remixes as well as a live CD from the Cosmic Tour 1990. CD

The breakout album for singer Frank Ocean – the featured voice and name attached to some stellar material by other acts leading up to this career-making set for Interscope! ✨✧ Velvet UndergroundWhite Light/White Heat (45th Anniversary 3CD set – with book and bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1968. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! This great 3CD package features loads of sweet extra bits – including a 7 track Live At The Gymnasium performance from 1967, with versions of "Run Run Run", "Booker T", "I'm Not A Young Man Anymore", "I'm Waiting For The Man", "Sister Ray", and "Guess I'm Falling In Love" – plus "I Heard Her Call My Name (alternate)", "Hey Mr Rain (version one)", "Temptation Inside Your Heart (original mix)", "Stephanie Says (orig mix)", "Beginning To See The Light (early version)", "Hey Mr Rain (version two)", and "Guess I'm Falling In Love (instrumental)". Also features a full mono version of the album, plus "White Light White Heat (mono single)", "Here She Comes Now (mono single)", and previously-unseparated vocal and instrumental versions of "The Gift". Comes in a really great 10" square, hardbound book – with 60 pages of full color notes, photos, and images of cool artifacts too! CD

✨✧ Erykah BaduWorldwide Underground (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown (Australia), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics; but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than any of the ladies that followed her lead after Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You". Includes bonus tracks "Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip Hop)". CD
Also available Worldwide Underground (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP 27.99
