Detroit's Guilty Simpson teams up with Philly producer Small Professor – with appearances by Boldy James, Statik Selektah, AG, Castle & Euclid – plus remixes by DJ Revolution & Zilla Rocca. Production wise, it's got a lot a dense beats and off-kilter, though walloping percussion – with eerie synths and other elements giving it a foreboding vibe. A stunningly beautiful set of jazz from the Irish scene of the late 70s – a record that's completely unto its own, without any of the sort of generation-based elements you might expect – very much an individual expression of a really wonderful group! There's a rock-solid sense of timing and composure here – and the tunes don't need a conventional swing to move forward – as the musicians have a confident ability to shape things as they like – almost in the way that Australian jazz musicians of the late 60s and early 70s were completely onto their own thing, and didn't need to reference US or UK modes at all. The group's led by pianist Noel Kelehan, who also seems to play some electric keys here – and the album features great work on soprano and tenor from Keith Donald, and trumpet and flugelhorn from Mike Nolan – both players we don't know at all, but who are great throughout. Rhythm is from Frank Hess on bass and John Wadham on drums – both players whose sensibilities really match those of Kelehan – and titles include "One For Willie", "Spacer's Delight", "Spon Song", "Castle Of DRomore", and "Triers Not Fliers". The "Louis" in the band here is Louis Vanni – an Italian sound library arranger who cooked up this rare batch of instrumental grooves in the studio! The approach is funk, but of a varied sort – sometimes more disco, sometimes more soundtrack – occasionally with the sorts of 80s touches that would belie the album's release date, but often with warmer elements that have more of a late 70s sound overall! The instrumentation is nicely creative – spare tunes, without too much complexity, but always a focus on a core instrumental element and flourish – with that sense of separation that you'd get on a sound library release. A mid-70s classic from Ian Carr's Nucleus – a set that has the group still going strong, and still turning out one of the most amazing blends of jazz and progressive elements of their scene at the time! Carr's at the helm on both trumpet and flugelhorn, but also plays piano and moog as well – and Bob Bertles serves up killer reed lines on alto, soprano, baritone, and flute – while Ken Shaw rips through the whole proceedings with work on both electric and 12 string guitar. Geoff Castle adds in lots more keyboards, and Moog – and the rhythm's driven by the bass of Roger Sutton and drums of Roger Sellers. Tracks are longish, and just about every group member adds in percussion too – on titles that include "Rat's Bag", "Rachel's Tune", "Snakehips Etcetera", "Pussyfoot", and "Heyday". Soaring sounds from Nucleus – one of the few UK jazz/rock combos from the start of the 70s who really found a way to keep growing and changing as the years moved on! Here, the lineup is nice and large – the mighty trumpet of Ian Carr in the lead, next to keyboards from both Gordon Beck and Geoff Castle, both of whom bring plenty of Fender Rhodes into play – with more work from Jocelyn Pitchen and Ken Shaw on guitars, and Bob Bertles on alto, baritone, bass clarinet, and flute – really great reedwork that's always a great match for Carr's energy. There's some really great drums on the set from Bryan Spring, which make the best tracks quite funky – and titles include "In Procession", "The Addison Trip", "Pastoral Graffiti", "New Life", and "A Taste Of Sasparilla". Pianist Roberto Olzer has an amazing touch on the keys of the piano – a sense of subtle feeling and emotion that's almost as if he's playing a piece by Chopin, but delivered with more of the fluid lyricism of jazz overall – which makes for a really wonderful blend throughout! The trio features bass from Yuri Goloubev and drums from Mauro Beggio – both players who often hang back and let the resonance of the piano take the lead – on tracks that include the originals "Deliverance", "Parisian Episode VII", "And After", "Canova", and "A Simple Song" – plus takes on "The Old Castle", "G Spot Tornado/Sleep Dirt", and "Celeste". 2LP version also features bonus tracks – "Sakura Nagashi" and "Ninja Re Bang Bang". An excellent early album from Japanese drummer Masahiko Togashi, featuring a group that he co-led with trombonist Hiroshi Suzuki! The quintet's got a sound that's kind of a messed-up take on the Blue Note groove of the 60s – particularly the Lee Morgan rolling funky soul jazz sound of the middle part of the decade – and the record's got a unique tip that we really like a lot! Basically, the band starts out with a hardbop groove – but then will roll into solo moments that, while not entirely out, have a strange off-beat quality that's really fresh. Tetsu Sushimi is on trumpet – part of a trumpet/trombone frontline that weaves together nicely, along with some great piano work, and strong rhythm from Togashi. A deep dive into the catalog of the legendary Soul Note label – the Italian imprint that became a huge host to American jazz musicians in the late 70s onwards – a company that helped to evolve both spiritual and loft jazz modes, and continue the legacy of free-thinking expression that was begun in the shadow of John Coltrane! The choice of cuts here is great – tracks that go past some of the obvious classics of the label, but which also resonate with those moments too – a well-chosen array of tracks that often focus on more rhythmic moments of the label, with strong spiritual and modal currents throughout. Early work from Ted Nugent – working here as the searing lead guitarist of the mighty Amboy Dukes! The Nuge doesn't sing on the set, but his guitar is definitely in the spotlight on most numbers – ripping out with a rawness that beats his later superstar work, and which is free to freak out nicely in this set of psyche-heavy sounds from the Mainstream label at the height of their late 60s greatness. Side one features a number of shorter Nugent-penned tunes, and side two is a slightly more complicated offering – a bit of a concept piece, with tracks that form a story over the side of the record. An album that's got all sorts of wonderful jazzy goodness going on – not just all sorts of great keyboard work from the leader Dana Kaproff, but also a full ensemble feel that really helps the whole thing soar! The approach is 70s jazz funk, of mid-decade mode – and the tunes are a blend of CTI-styled tunes with others that have a richer color palette that maybe invokes electric jazzy soundtrack work of the period too – all blended together with a top-shelf sound for such an obscure indie release! Rocky Davis plays additional Fender Rhodes on the record, and most of the other players are equally obscure – as is Dana Kaproff himself – but that doesn't stop the whole thing from being a sweet electric gem, with titles that include "Piranha", "Brownstones", "Mariposa", "Sandcastle", "Snowdrift", and "Aviary".
