Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersChild's Dance (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige, 1972. Used ... $18.99
Seminal Art Blakey material from the early 70s – a real change from his 60s vibe on Blue Note, in a style that really opens up to a host of more spiritual touches! The album's a counterpart to the classic Buhania set, also issued on Prestige at the time – and like that record, this one features a very spiritual group of younger players, and some slight electric touches too – all with a sound that's almost at the level of work on the Strata East or Black Jazz labels! Players include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Ramon Morris on tenor and flute, George Cables on piano and Fender Rhodes, and Buddy Terry on soprano sax – and tracks are nice and long, often with a hip modal groove. Titles include "Child's Dance", "CC", and "Song For A Lonely Woman". CD also includes some nice bonus cuts: the amazing "Kaku Aka", which is 15 minutes long, and has never been reissued, plus "Anthenagain" and "I'm Not So Sure", which are both from another Blakey Prestige session. CookersBelieve ... CD
Motema, 2012. Used ... $9.99
A great one from this all-star group – an incredibly righteous combo that's given Billy Harper one of his best chances to play in years! As with the previous album by The Cookers, the Harper influence really runs strong – not just in the use of some of his great tracks in the performance, but also in the way the tunes build and work together – that bold, powerful energy that Billy first unleashed on the world in the 70s – driven to new heights here by a lineup that also includes Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Craig Handy on alto sax, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! But key thanks should also go to trumpeter David Weiss – also in the group, and producer for the record – a great talent for getting these guys to work together so well. Titles include tunes by McBee, Cables, and Hart as well – with tracks that include "Ebony Moonbeams", "Believe For It Is True", "Free For All", "Quest", "But He Knows", "Tight Squeeze", and "Naaj". ✨✧ Luis GascaLuis Gasca (For Those Who Chant) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Thumb/Big Pink (South Korea), 1972. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest solo albums ever issued by Latin jazz trumpeter Luis Gasca – a set that really expands on his debut for Atlantic Records, and which brings in a whole host of early 70s west coast Latin influences! The style here is very laidback and open – a bit like some of the Chicano funk coming out of the LA scene at the time, but a fair bit more jazz oriented overall – with long lean solos from both Gasca on trumpet and Joe Henderson on tenor sax, set up in a half-electric set of rhythms laid out on guitar, organ, keyboards, bass, and plenty of percussion! Other players here are all top-shelf too – and include Carlos Santana, George Cables, Stanley Clarke, Coke Escovedo, and Lenny White. The album features 4 long tracks – "Spanish Gypsy", "Street Dude", "La Raza", and "Little Mama". CD
(2022 Big Pink pressing with the obi. Please note the disc has a pinhole but plays fine.)

Contemporary/OJC, 1978. Used ... $5.99
A nice lost late number from Art Pepper – a freewheeling set of tracks that really show the influence of John Coltrane on Pepper's work – cut with a quartet that includes George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on "blitz bass", and Carl Burnett on drums. The tracks are long, and two numbers have a really nice Latiny flair – with Art spinning out some aggressive solos on top of fast-running grooves, in a way you'd be surprised to hear on one of his albums from the time! Titles include "Rita San", "My Laurie", "Ballad of The Sad Young Men", and "Mambo De La Pinta". Art PepperSo In Love ... CD
Artists House/King (Japan), 1979. Used ... $14.99
Beautiful late work from Art Pepper – one of his albums recorded for the well-done Artist House label, and a set that's maybe got a different vibe than some of his Galaxy recordings of the time! There's a rock-solid sense of soul to the record – one that comes from the work of two different rhythm trios – one that features George Cables on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a rhythm trio who keep things swinging, but never in a way that's too straight – pushing Art a bit around the edges, but letting him come right down the middle with some fantastic solos on alto – the other with Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums. Tunes are a bit shorter than on some other albums of the period, but in a great way that really lets you focus in on Pepper's amazing sound –and titles include "Diane", "Stardust", "Blues For Blanche", and "Straight No Chaser". Art PepperTrip (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1976. Used ... $16.99
The "trip" here is a mellow one – not the soaring, spacey style you might expect in a long line of drug-reference titles for Art Pepper albums – but that difference is a-ok with us, because Art's really hitting some great new territory here, thanks to a hip trio that includes George Cables on piano! Tracks are long and stretched out – but in a way that's gently exploratory, and focused on a really warm sense of tone – in a mode that we might liken slightly to Stan Getz at his best moments from the same period, particularly the groove he developed in his post-Sweet Rain years. Other members of the quartet include David Williams on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – and tracks include "The Trip", "Sweet Love Of Mine", "Song For Richard", "Red Car", and "The Summer Knows". CD features 1 bonus track! CD

Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins' Next Album ... CD
Milestone/Victor (Japan), 1972. Used ... $24.99
An overlooked gem from Rollins – and a record that has him playing with a bit of an electric feel, in a style that's similar to some of Joe Henderson's early 70s Milestone sessions! Similar to Henderson's albums, George Cables plays a bit of electric piano on the set – grooving nicely in a chunky style that brings a lot more rhyhtm than usual into Rollins' playing. The result might not be totally great if you're a fan of hardbop Sonny, but to our funky ears, it's a real treat – and has made the album a treasure that we've loved for years! Tracks are long, and tunes include "The Everywhere Calypso", "Poinciana", "Playin In The Yard", and "Keep Hold Of Yourself". CD

✨✧ CookersCast The First Stone ... CD
Plus Loin (France), 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant set from The Cookers – a combo that includes the mighty Billy Harper on tenor sax, and who step out here with a soaringly brilliant sound that recalls some of Harper's best material in recent years! Yet Billy's only the tip of the iceberg, as all players are great – truly the cookers promised by the name– including Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpets, Craig Handy on alto sax, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – plus some key guest work from Azar Lawrence on tenor and soprano sax too! The rhythms are perfect for the record – modally comping, with just the right sort of searching energy to inspire the most spiritual performances from the players – and titles include great versions of Billy Harper's "Cast The First Stone", "Croquet Ballet", and "The Seventh Day", – plus "Think On Me", "Peacemaker", "The Chief", and "Looking For The Light". Beautiful work from a crack group of jazz legends, together billed as The Cookers – Billy Harper on tenor, Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpet, Craig Handy on alto & flute, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – kind of a dream lineup, working here with the same sort of spiritual energy you'd expect from a 70s session of this nature! The music is filled with love and joy – and has just the right sort of groove to really make the soloists take off – and titles include Cables's "Spookarella" and "Sweet Rita Suite Part 2: Her Soul", Harper's "Priestess" and Capra Black", McBee's "Close To You Alone", "Ladybugg" and "U Phoria", and an great opening take on Freddie Hubbard's "The Core". ✨✧ Dexter GordonManhattan Symphonie (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Later genius from Dexter Gordon – an album recorded upon his return to the US in 1976, and done in a style that breaks the bounds of some of his sessions in Europe! Gordon seems to take new life in the recording – moving past the simple role of main soloist on familiar tunes, and stepping into a much more strongly group-minded leader – one who grooves easily with the piano of George Cables, bass of Rufus Reid, and drums of Eddie Gladden – in a session that's overflowing with soulful invention. Even older tunes take on a new spark of life in these arrangements – and Gordon's phrasing has this "bite" that comes through beautifully, even in the mellower moments. Titles include "Tanya", "I Told You So", "LTD", "Moment's Notice", and "As Time Goes By". Plus, CD features 2 previously unreleased bonus tracks – "Ruby My Dear" and "Secret Love". CD

JVC (Japan), 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great late live date from Art Pepper – as well-recorded and as strongly played as his best work of the time on Galaxy or Contemporary Records – and done with a similar group as well! The album's no cheapy concert for the overseas crowd – as Art's working here with George Cables on piano, David Williams on bass, and Carl Burnett on drums – all grooving tremendously on these long-flowing tracks that show the best late Pepper modes firmly at work. Echoes of Coltrane come through his horn, as does a bit of Latin as well – but there's also a soaring, soulful quality to most of the tunes that really stands out – thanks in part to Cables, whose piano is always well-placed throughout! Pepper has a wonderfully sharp tone on most numbers – and titles include "Landscape", "Red Car", "Goodbye", "Straight Life", "Road Waltz", "For Freddie", and "Body & Soul". CD

Late live work from Art Pepper – and a set that has him blowing a bit of clarinet, in addition to his usual alto sax! The session was recorded in performance in Tokyo, but it's got the close-up feel of some of Art's studio sets from the time – beautifully blown, with an open quality in the way the tunes unfold, yet a tightness on the solos that's undeniable! The rhythm section features George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and Pepper plays clarinet on the tune "Sometime", and alto on "True Blues", "Landscape", "Avalon", and "Straight Life". Recorded over two nights of July '79 and consists of two sets each night. CD

✨✧ Frank FosterManhattan Fever (Blue Note) (with previously unreleased album) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968/1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lean, righteous blowing from the legendary Frank Foster – one of a handful of extremely hip sessions he cut in the 60s under his own name! The album's the only record Foster ever did for Blue Note – and we dare say it's even better than his previous 60s work on Prestige and Impulse – with a quality that's even darker, even deeper, even more advanced from his earlier years with Basie. There's a rolling, joyous groove to many numbers – that late 60s take on soul jazz that made for so many great tracks on albums by Hank Mobley or Lee Morgan near the end of the decade. Foster keeps things tight, but he's also got an expansive vision too – an edge in the horns that points the way towards some of the chances he'd take in the 70s, but which is still wrapped around a leanly leaping soul jazz groove! Foster wrote 5 of the 6 tracks on the album, and he's working here with a sextet that includes Garnett Brown on trombone, Marvin Stamm on trumpet, and Richard Wyands on piano, who brings in some offbeat notes and colors throughout. Rhythm is by the excellent team of Bob Cranshaw on bass and Mickey Roker on drums – and titles include "Seventh Avenue Bill", "Stammpede", "Little Miss No Nose", "Manhattan Fever", and "Loneliness". Added to the core album is a full bonus album – recorded by Foster nearly a year after the first, and even more far-reaching! There's a quality to the date that mixes together Frank's previous soulful vamping with some more introspective, more lyrical moments – almost modern at times, but not entirely so – and played by a septet that includes Ed Pazant on alto and flute, Burt Collins on trumpet, George Cables on piano, and Jimmy Cleveland on trombone. Foster himself plays a bit of alto clarinet alongside his usual tenor – and titles include "Fly By Night", "Slug's Bag", "What's New From The Monster Mill", and "Hip Shakin". CD

Milestone, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great electric set – recorded at the Lighthouse in 1970, in that slightly funky mode of Joe's best work from the time! Joe Henderson's beautiful soloing style, honed at this point on a number of fine Blue Note recordings, is set free in a band that includes Woody Shaw, Lenny White, and George Cables, who plays beautifully on electric piano. Tracks include new versions of "Mode for Joe" and "Blue Bossa" – redone with a sweet gliding 70s groove – plus "Carribean Fire Dance", "If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem", and "Round Midnight". The core original album If You're Not Part Of The Solution is expanded with tracks pulled from the Joe Henderson box set – making for a 10-title package that recaptures the whole original performance. Extra tracks include "Recorda-Me", "Isotope", "A Shade Of Jade", and "Invitation". CD

Beautiful late Blue Note work from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – laidback, warm, electric, and with a mixture of CTI funk and some of the more lyrical soul jazz work of his years with Harold Land! Part of the credit for the set should go to George Cables – who plays both acoustic and electric keys on the record, and who gives the album a sweetly dancing feel that really warms things up wonderfully – a great mix of vibes and keyboards that's wonderful throughout! But all other players are wonderful too –including drummer Eddie Marshall, bassist James Leary, and horn players Freddie Hubbard, Hadley Caliman, and Manny Boyd. Titles include a great remake of "Little B's Poem", the mellow groover "Why Not", and the cuts "Til Then", "Knucklebean", and "So Far So Good". CD

✨✧ Woody ShawBlackstone Legacy ... CD
Contemporary, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning extended set from the great Woody Shaw – a majestic, spiritual album that almost feels more like something that you'd hear on the Strata East label than you might expect from the more straight ahead Contemporary Records imprint! The lineup is as majestic as the music – and Woody's trumpet is joined by alto and soprano sax from Gary Bartz, electric piano from Geroge Cables, tenor and flute from Benny Maupin, bass from Clint Houston, and drums from Lenny White – all very hip players who really help the record soar! If you dig the early work of Gary Bartz, or some of Shaw's more soul jazz outings of the early 70s – you'll definitely dig this one – and the double-length nature of the record gives all players plenty of room to do their thing! All the tracks are long, and the set list includes "Deed For Dolphy", "Boo Ann's Grand", and "New World". CD

✨✧ Woody ShawLast Of The Line (Cassandranite/Love Dance) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1965/1975. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2 of Woody Shaw's greatest albums – recorded 10 years apart, and forming a fantastic CD collection! Cassandranite features fantastic early work by Woody Shaw – an album originally recorded in 1965, when Shaw was part of a core soul jazz underground that was slowly forming an answer to the "new thing" movement of the mid 60s. The session was self-produced – and not only features some killer playing by Shaw, but contains a number of other wonderful touches. Larry Young plays piano (not organ) on two tracks; Herbie Hancock is on another 3; George Cables plays electric on the last track, which also includes Harold Vick; Joe Henderson plays tenor throughout; and the great Joe Chambers is on drums. The set is filled with fantastic modal originals, all along the lines of Shaw's "Moontrane" composition – and titles include "Baloo Baloo", "Three Muses", "Tetragon", and "Cassandranite". Love Dance is equally great – spiritual, soulful, and filled with some nice modal grooving! The group's one of the best he ever worked with on Muse – with Billy Harper on tenor, plus Rene McLean, Steve Turre, Joe Bonner, and Cecil McBee – and the approach reminds us of some of the work on Strata East from the same time. The highlight of the record is the cut "Sunbath", which was done in a more famous jazz dance version by singer Joyce Hurley – but Shaw's version has a very similar groove. Harper makes many of the other tracks shine brilliantly, and titles include "Love Dance", "Obsequious", and Harper's own beautiful composition "Soulfully I Love You". CD

A bold early statement from trumpeter Woody Shaw – a key album that showcases the genius that was blossoming in his best 70s work! The set features Woody working with a soulful group of west coast players from the LA scene – including Bennie Maupin, Ramon Morris, George Cables, Henry Franklin, and the legendary Fats Theus, who we mostly know from his funky album! The tracks are long and flowing – very much in the best Shaw writing style of the time – a mode that's clearly inspired by the freedoms of the post-Coltrane generation, but which never over-indulges in them – and always keeps its searching energy focused. George Cables plays some great electric piano on the sublime "Love For The One You Can't Have" – and other tracks include "The Awakening", "Song Of Songs", and "The Goat & The Archer". CD

One of the greatest groups going in recent years – a strong revival of key soulful jazz talents from previous years, all working under the leadership of trumpeter David Weiss – who's really helped them come together and find a whole new sort of energy! The lineup features tremendous tenor from Billy Harper – sounding at his classic best with The Cookers – especially when the rhythms spin out majestically from George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – often with these dark undercurrents that make the music wonderfully powerful! And in addition to Weiss on trumpet, the frontline also includes Eddie Henderson's trumpet as well, plus the alto of Donald Harrison – and the horns have a great way of folding together and interweaving, before breaking out in these very personal solos. Mosaic, 1978/1979. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Late live recordings from the mighty Dexter Gordon – 3 CDs worth of material recorded at the Keystone Korner in the late 70s, all with an inventively-blown power to match Gordon's earlier live sets from the European scene! The format here is similar – with Dexter out front, laying down incredible lines on tenor sax – and getting support from George Cables on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. But in a way, the music here is even stronger than before – as Gordon's got a sharper edge, focused solo approach, and is working with an agility that really leaves us breathless. The tracks are long, but have the energy of Gordon's shorter studio tracks for Columbia at the time – and although we're not always huge fans of the "soloist in unfettered live setting" style of recording, we've gotta admit that we really love these tracks! Titles include "You've Changed", "It's You Or No One", "Antabus", "Backstairs/LTD", "The Panther", "Tangerine", "Gingerbread Boy", and "I Told You So". CD

✨✧ Eddie HendersonWitness To History ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2023. Used ... Out Of Stock
An album that begins with a drumbreak, then features electric piano from George Cables – all at a level that almost feels like Eddie Henderson has gone back to those sublime funky years of the mid 70s! Back in the day, the trumpeter's spacious approach to jazz funk really marked the start of a new era for the music – and since that time, Henderson's only gotten better and better in an acoustic setting too – really developing strongly since his initial appearance on spiritual sessions for others, with a range of expression that's on full display here! The album moves from the electric start to more acoustic modes – sometimes swinging, sometimes intimate – and Cables is a superb accompanist throughout, on both electric and acoustic keys – in a group that also features Donald Harrison on alto, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Lenny White on drums. Titles include "Totem Pole", "Scorpio Rising", "Why Not", "It Never Entered My Mind", "I Am Going To Miss You My Darling", and "Freedom Jazz Dance". CD

✨✧ James Leary with Joe HendersonTogether (Legacy/bonus tracks) ... CD
Life Force Jazz, 1980/1990s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent set of material from the Bay Area bassist James Leary – a package that brings together one rare album, and a whole host of unreleased recordings as well! The core album is Legacy – originally issued on the tiny Blue Collar label at the start of the 80s, and a wonderful set that features plenty of tenor work from Joe Henderson – a really much-needed document of Joe's tremendous sound during this under-recorded period of his career – and very heavy in those sharp, dark tones he used on the Mirror Mirror album! The rest of the group is great – a core combo with George Cables on piano, Eddie Marshall on drums, and Kenneth Nash on percussion – augmented by some larger backings at times, but always in a relatively subtle way that preserves the energy of the core. Titles from that session include "Twenty Five/Mister X", "Remember To Smile", "Today's Song", "So Far So Good", "Legacy", and "Wajumbe". CD also then features 90s recordings made by Leary with some mighty hip players in the southern Cali scene – a shifting lineup that features vocals from Dwight Trible on two numbers, plus trumpet from James Smith, tenor from George Harper, and piano from Eric Reed. Titles include "Song For My Mother", "Little Birds", "Come & Talk", "Together", and "Expose". CD

Timeless (Netherlands), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Eddie Marshall never cut many albums as a leader, but we'll always love him for this one – a sublime San Francisco 70s session that features tremendous vibes from the great Bobby Hutcherson! But actually, the whole group's great – and also includes George Cables on piano, James Leary on bass, and Manny Boyd on tenor and soprano sax – who works alongside Hutcherson's vibes with some of the same soulful currents as Harold Land from earlier years! The tunes are well-paced – mostly by Marshall, with a slight undercurrent of spirituality – and a lyrical beauty that almost has Bobby in "Little B's Poem" territory at times. Titles include "The Stroll", "The High Priestess Of Gone", "Andree", and "But I Refuse To Come Down". CD

Artists House/Omnivore, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Five tremendous albums from saxophone genius Art Pepper – presented here with a lot of bonus tracks too! First up is So In Love – beautiful late work from Art Pepper – one of his albums recorded for the well-done Artist House label, and a set that's maybe got a different vibe than some of his Galaxy recordings of the time! Artworks is a nicely focused set from the great Art Pepper – a record that features a number of familiar bop and jazz themes, but set to a more open, relaxed, and very soulful style that wonderfully reflects all the greatness of Pepper in his final years! The group on the record is nicely understated, but still very hip – George Cables on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and Art gets plenty of space to step out front and really blow these amazing solos, including one number that features just bass and drums, while Pepper blows a bit of clarinet – which we always love. All other titles feature alto sax – and titles include "Donna Lee", "Anthropology", "You Go To My Head", "Body & Soul", and "Desafinado". Next is a New York Album, but one that was oddly recorded in Burbank – and which has Art Pepper sounding very much at the top of his game! The format here is a bit like the other Artist House Pepper sessions, and those he did for the Japanese Atlas label – tight, focused, often tunes that are older jazz or bop standards – but swing with a great rhythm section, and topped with completely sublime alto solos from the leader! The quartet features Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums – but one number is a duo between Carter and Pepper, and another features just piano and alto. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Lover Man", "Duo Blues", "My Friend John", and "Straight No Chaser". Stardust is a great little record from Art Pepper – four long tracks that really have him stretching out on alto – but in a way that's maybe a bit different than some of his more burning albums on the Galaxy label at the time! The group here follows from some of the previous Artist House recordings – George Cables on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a rhythm combo that's mighty nice – and which benefits from some great straight basswork from Haden, and Higgins' always compelling sense of rhythm! Titles include "My Friend John", "Stardust", and "Tin Tin Deo" – plus a reading of "In A Mellotone" that has Art on clarinet. CD5 features a full disc of Sessions material, titled as such – alternates, and unusual versions from the recording dates – and all other of the four CDs feature bonus material as well – different takes and alternates! Beautiful late work from Art Pepper – and a set that definitely lives up to the samba promised in its name! The groove here is a bit more fluid than usual for Art at this time in his career – and that's saying a lot, given the open-ended style of his Galaxy and Contemporary work – and in a way, it's the rhythm section that really seems to drive the record – George Cables on piano, Michael Formanek on bass, and Eddie Marshall on drums – really stretching out on the album's long, live tracks to give Pepper plenty of dancing rhythms underneath his alto lines. The set features two great Brazilian-tinged groovers – "Samba Mom Mom" and a version of "Blue Bossa" – plus "Art Meets Mr Beautiful" and "Here's That Rainy Day". CD

Widows Taste, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
CD

Lonehill (Spain), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous live session from 1969 – a bit rough on the recording quality, but completely wonderful in terms of playing! The unique date features Woody Shaw playing in a group with Art Blakey – a few years before Shaw formally joined the Jazz Messengers, and in a looser, freer mode that's got all the best hallmarks of the groundbreaking New Jersey scene of the time! Blakey's usual tightness as a drummer is really let up for the set – which features him cascading and withdrawing as fits the needs of the players – breaking down the structure of the tunes to allow for very long solo work by Shaw, tenorist Carlos Garnett, and pianist George Cables. Scotty Holt keeps some massively soulful time on bass, and Garnett's searing solo work is worth the price of the album alone – almost topping the best of his own recordings from later, more famous years. Titles include a reading of "Night In Tunisia", plus the fantastic "Original Theme" by Shaw. And as we say, the recording quality's a bit rough, but the solo work is great! CD
