✨✧ Hamilton BohannonBrunswick Complete Singles Collection ... CD
Brunswick/Dakar (Japan), 1970s. Used ... $11.99
Killer cuts from the legendary Hamilton Bohannon – an artist who first broke big on the Brunswick label with a really unique approach to a groove! Bohannon's cuts were always funky, but never straight funk – and instead, he had this minimalist way of layering together elements that was definitely a huge influence on later disco and club – but heard here in a style that's much more raw and down to earth! The package offers up 23 tracks that come from 45s that Bohannon did for the Brunswick label – some of which have different mixes, and all of which are razor-sharp groovers that are sure to please any fan of funk. Titles include "Run It On Down Mr DJ (parts 1 & 2)", "Come Winter", "Happy Feeling", "Gittin Off", "Have A Good Day", "Bohannon's Beat", "East Coast Groove", "The Fat Man", "Red Bone", "Truck Stop", "Stop & Go", "Save Their Souls", and "The Pimp Walk". ✨✧ MergeMerge ... CD
RCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. Used ... $8.99
Funky grooves merge into sweet soulful moments – on this wonderful debut from an obscure Chicago group! The music is clubby at points, but also mellows out at others – mixing bassy grooves with spacier moments that have an especially nice vibe – and which really showcase a sophisticated modern soul side of the group! And the production work features plenty of old talents from Brunswick Records – including Chicago soul giants Carl Davis, Eugene Record, and Sonny Sanders – who really put the record together with a lot of care, at a level that should have made these guys huge. A great lost set, but well worth discovering – and tracks include "Volcanic Voodoo", "Take It To The Top", "What Makes You Wanna Lie To Me", "You're My Everything", "Show Him The Way To Go", and "Worry". ✨✧ Count Basie & Lester YoungClassic 1936 to 1947 Count Basie & Lester Young Studio Sessions (8CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 30s/1940s. Used 8CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible document of one of the greatest pairings in jazz – the groundbreaking tenor sax of Lester Young, and the legendary orchestra of Count Basie! The Young/Basie pairing is the stuff of history books, and has certainly been showcased on other releases – but never in this much detail, or with this much attention to both the sound and discographical information – as the 8CD package pulls together tracks from labels that include Decca, Aladdin, Brunswick, Commodore, Emarcy, Keynote, Mercury, Victor, Vocalion, and a few other imprints – spanning over a decade of recording, with a total of 173 tracks in all! Young's horn is amazing – birthed in swing, but given a sense of soul that would shape countless generations to come – a huge influence on young boppers of the Stan Getz generation, but also a real guide to some of the soul jazz musicians of the 60s, and new traditionalists of later generations too. Some sides here are small groups, many more large ensembles with Basie as the leader – plus a few cuts with Benny Goodman, the Kansas City Six, Teddy Wilson, Sam Price, and Dicky Wells – all numbers that might just feature Young but not Basie. There's even a few with singer Una Mae Carlisle, and a few other tracks feature vocals – although the bulk of the work is instrumental. Wonderful throughout – and a great example of how great the Mosaic presentation can be for music of the 78rpm generation! CD
(Box has a few light marks in one bottom corner, but is great overall, and the book is very nice.)

✨✧ Coleman HawkinsClassic Coleman Hawkins Sessions 1922 to 1947 (8CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1920s/1930s/1940s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing set throughout – not just for the musical growth of Coleman Hawkins, but also for the development of the tenor sax in jazz, too! These sides could very well be said to be THE seminal recordings for tenor – the records that helped transform the instrument from a bit of a trick noisemaker into one of the most dominant voices in jazz during the 20th century – the beginning of a rich legacy that went onto encompass Lester Young, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, and so many others! The package captures Coleman Hawkins right at the start of his career – with vital early 78rpm recordings that move from trad to swing to some of the modern combo sounds that Hawkins would blow in the postwar years. And the range of settings is amazing, too – not a loose collection or mish-mash of material, but a really thoughtful progression that has Hawkins working with Mamie Smith, Fletcher Henderson, Clarence Williams, The Chocolate Dandies, and McKinney's Cotton Pickers in the early years – then moving up to work as a leader on his own – as well as material with Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, and Count Basie. Most of the later material is for small labels – like Baronet, Cont, Meritt, Neatwork, and others – and the early sides are for Okeh, Columbia, Vocalion, Brunswick, and other smaller imprints. Features 190 tracks in all, and very copious notes, too – an amazing package from Mosaic! CD
(Out of print. Box and book are in nice shape.)
