✨✧ Horace SilverIn Pursuit Of The 27th Man (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A real watershed album from Horace Silver – a record that has him stepping strongly into the 70s – but with a rich new groove that's different both from his 60s work, and from the heavy politics of his United States series too! The album has Horace picking up a slightly electric sound, changing his groove from 60s soul jazz into more of a 70s modal approach – working here with David Friedman on vibes, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, and Mickey Roker on drums, plus additional horn work by the Brecker Brothers – a really great combination of musicians that help Silver realize some really unique rhythms, and lots of moments that have a subtle yet righteous sense of soul! The selection of material is fantastic – hipper than usual for Horace – and titles include Weldon Irvine's "Liberated Brother", Moacir Santos' "Kathy", and Horace's own "Strange Vibes", which has some great vibes dancing around Horace's piano! A very nice album, and one of our favorites by Horace! CD
(Out of print, thin cutout notch through spine.)

✨✧ Frank ZappaZappa In New York (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) (5CD box set) ... CD
Zappa, 1977. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Frank Zappa live in the 70s – working with a surprisingly hip large ensemble, with all the sharp changes and unusual moments of his classic studio albums! Like some of Zappa's other concert performances, there's an approach that steps a few years back – clearly to please the group coming to hear their favorites, but in a way that also offers up a nice sharpening-up of the music too – especially given that the whole thing's happening live on stage! There's some great jazz help here – horns from The Brecker Brothers, Lou Marini, Ronnie Cuber, and Tom Malone – plus wonderful vibes from Dave Samuels and keyboards from Eddie Jobson – and even a bit of narration from Don Pardo. Titles include "I'm The Slime", "Titties & Beer", "Cruisin For Burgers", "The Illinois Enema Bandit", "Punky's Whips", "Big Leg Emma", and "Sofa". Box set includes the original album album, 3 hours of previously unreleased performances, and other nuggets – plus a 60 page booklet with lots of behind the scenes photos. CD
(2019 Deluxe Edition in the original cardboard box with the ticket stub. Outer box has a small puncture on the top edge – otherwise in great shape!)

✨✧ Mark MurphyMark Murphy Sings ... CD
Muse, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Arguably the best Mark Murphy album ever – a stunningly soulful, and slightly spiritual 70s session that features some of his hippest tunes ever – with backings from arranger Dave Matthews and a group that also includes The Brecker Brothers and Don Grolnick on keyboards! Titles include great vocal versions of "Naima", "Empty Faces", "Red Clay", "Maiden Voyage", and "Canteloupe Island". CD

✨✧ Diana RossSwept Away ... CD
RCA, 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprising hit for Diana Ross – a record that really helped the singer shine brightly in the 80s, but with a vibe that's quite different than her years at Motown! The album's got plenty of star power on board – production work from Arthur Baker, Richard Perry, Daryl Hall, Lionel Richie, and Bernard Edwards – and a musical lineup that features half those artistes, plus work from Jeff Beck, Nile Rodgers, and the Brecker Brothers too! Diana's vocals aren't as over the top as during the disco years – and find a nice place to percolate within the warmer 80s grooves – mostly rhythms that have a nice sort of crossover potential, but not in a way that's as clunky or commercial as some of her contemporaries. Titles include "Missing You", "It's Your Move", "Swept Away", "Telephone", "All Of You", "Touch By Touch", "Nobody Makes Me Crazy", and "Rescue Me". CD

✨✧ Hal GalperReach Out ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the few 70s sessions that features Hal Galper working with horns – in this case the Brecker Brothers, who really add a nice degree of fire to the set! Rhythm is by Wayne Dockery on bass and Billy Hart on drums – and Hal's playing acoustic piano, giving the album lots of warm tones and a sweet mellow feel overall. Titles include "Waiting For Chet", "Children Of The Night", "Spidit", and "Reach Out". CD
