✨✧ VariousSkippy White Story – Boston Soul 1961 to 1967 ... LP
Yep Roc, Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
If you never went to Skippy White's record store in Boston, you really missed a hell of a shop – a surprisingly great outlet for rare and underground soul, located way up in New England – and a place that was giving the world wonderful music over the course of many decades! Back in the early days of the store, Skippy really had his ear to the scene – and managed to capture all sorts of great artists who were working very underground on the Boston scene – mostly soul acts, but a bit of blues and gospel too – all featured here in the first-ever collection to look at White's work at this level. The package was put together by Eli Paperboy Reed, and has notes from Boston contemporaries Peter Guaralnick and Peter Wolf – yet it's far hipper than any of those references might imply – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Do The Thing" by Earl Lett, "I Love What I Found In You" by The Precisions, "I've Been Lifted Out Of Sin" by Sons Of David, "Evil Woman Blues" by Guitar Nubbit, "Treason" by The Precisions, "Holy Ghost & Fire" by The Lord's Messengers, "Skippy White (parts 1 & 2)" by Junior Washington, "I Was Standing" by Lynn Harmonizers, and "Now Is The Time" by Earl Lett. Aerosmith1971 – The Road Starts Hear ... LP
Universal, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 21.99
The first-known recordings of the young Aerosmith – pulled from the group's own vaults, and issued here for the first time! The sound of the group is already strongly in place, and you'll know some of these cuts from their first studio album – but the versions here have a quality that's even more raw and urgent, and a sound that's pretty darn mindblowing! The material was all recorded in October of 1971, in the group's Boston home turf – and titles include "Reefer Head Woman", "Movin Out", "Major Barbara", "Dream On", "Mama Kin", "Somebody", and "Walkin The Dog". Donald ByrdByrd's Eye View (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99 On May 3, 2024
A wailer! This rare 1955 album is one of Donald Byrd's first records as a leader – recorded for the tiny Transition label in Boston, but with a hardbop groove that's right up there with his early work for Savoy and Blue Note. The record is practically a Jazz Messengers session – as it features Art Blakey on drums, Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass – and it's also got the unique aspect of a two-trumpet frontline, as the young Joe Gordon joins Donald on the instrument for the session. Tracks are long and open-ended – with incredibly well-crafted playing that really keeps the set fresh, despite the young age of Donald at the time. Titles include "El Sino", "Doug's Blues", "Hank's Tune", and "Hank's Other Tune". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Blue Note Tone Poet series – heavy cover and vinyl!) This item will not be delivered to you before Friday, May 3.

Webster LewisGive Me Some Emotion – The Epic Anthology 1976 to 1981 ... LP
Epic/Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99 39.99
The hands of Webster Lewis are on a classic Fender Rhodes on the cover – and you'll hear plenty of that instrument on this collection, along with all the other many keyboards that Lewis can handle so well! Webster started out as a straighter jazzman in his early years, but by the time of these tracks he was at the top of his game in the world of soulful fusion – picking up a torch first lit by Herbie Hancock and Ramsey Lewis, and blending it with more influences from soul music too – which means that in addition to great keyboard solos from Lewis, you'll also hear wonderful vocals on most of these cuts – a key element that really helped Webster cross over into so many worlds at the time. As with work from the same period by Patrice Rushen, there's a sublime blend going on here – one that still sounds tremendous all these many years later, and which is presented with a great selection of cuts – including the rare "Japanese Umbrella" and "Boston" – plus "El Bobo", "Barbara Ann", "Hideaway", "Give Me Some Emotion", "Dancer", "Do It With Style", "Let Me Be The One", "Touch My Love", "Reach Out", "Love Won't Harm No One", and "There's A Happy Feeling". Tangerine ZooTangerine Zoo (green vinyl mono pressing) ... LP
Mainstream/Sundazed, 1968. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A record with a sound that's as swirly as its cover – a record that's loaded to the brim with fuzzy guitar and dreamy organ lines – and served up in a style that makes the whole thing one of the most treasured albums from the short-lived psych years on Mainstream Records! The group hail from Boston, but they've almost got the heady sound of some of the trippiest Texas groups of the period – effortlessly mixing garagey grit with heavier psychedelic elements – on titles that include "Trip To The Zoo", "Please Don't Set Me Free", "The Flight", "Mommy & Daddy", "Symphonic Psychedelia", "Crystalescent Heaven", and "One More Heartache". And heck, even their cover of "Gloria" is pretty darn wild! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Doug WatkinsWatkins At Large (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99 On June 7, 2024
A great session – and one of the few lost ones on the legendary Transition label! The album was originally recorded in Boston in 1956, and it features a group led by bassist Doug Watkins, with Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Art Taylor on drums – really a Blue Note lineup, if you come to think of it – and the album's definitely got a Blue Note vibe overall! Mobley's tenor is always a treat, and brings out a new sort of fire in Byrd's young horn – and Watkins, who didn't always work as a leader, has a hip conception that really keeps things interesting – a slight exotic undercurrent amidst the hardbop. Tracks are long, and titles include "More Of the Same", "Return To Paradise", "Panonica", and "Phinupi". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CarsCandy-O (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Elektra/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not The Cars' first album, but the one that definitely catapulted them from Boston underground to mainstream fame – quite a surprise, given the style that most of the bigger acts were laying down at the time! And of course, we say that from the more mainstream bent of our American market – where punk had yet to penetrate the radio and other outlets – which made the new wave sounds of The Cars a surprisingly strong tilt in a more contemporary direction for both major labels and broadcast radio. All these many years later, the group's elevated to classic rock status, but that's only because of the strength of the songs – a classic lineup that includes "Let's Go", "Candy O", "Night Spots", "You Can't Hold On Too Long", "Got A Lot On My Head", "It's All I Can Do", and "Since I Held You". ✨✧ Stark RealityDiscovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop ... LP
AJP/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most tripped-out albums of funk you'll ever buy – a rare treasure with a very unusual history! The Stark Reality were a cool little combo formed to work on public television in Boston in the late 60s – and the combo featured some heavy guitars, fuzzed-up vibes, and some monster percussion laid out in tight bass and drum rhythms that were years ahead of their time! The group recorded one rare album – ostensibly a children's record, but based around old compositions by Hoagy Carmichael, completely pulled apart, sliced up, overly harmonized, and spat out into wild funky tunes that bear no resemblance to their originals! John Abercrombie handles the guitar, Monty Stark delivers the vibes and vocals – and titles include "Rocket Ship", "Shooting Star", "Bustin Out Of Doors", "Comrades", "Swing High", "Cooking", "Grandfather Clock", "The Old Prospector", "The Whale", "Junkman's Song", and "Merry Go Round". ✨✧ CzarfaceCzartificial Intelligence (orange vinyl pressing) (2023 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Silver Age/Universal, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
What we once thought might've been a short-lived, if rewarding east coast team up of Wu Tang's Inspectah Deck and Boston heroes 7L & Esoteric has gone on to be one of the longest running later career supergroups this side of Run The Jewels! Old and mid school styled funky/sci-fi/vintage comic book style like we haven't heard since Doom left us, paired with some icey cool bits of synth and other and fresh touches on the production side – nicely setting up Deck's rhymes, still spitting sharp and smart after all these years. Includes "Czarchimedes' Death Day", "Blast Off", "All That For A Drop Of Blood", "Mama's Basement", "Frenzy In A Far Off Land" with Frankie Pulitzer, "Czarsenic", Gate Crasher" with Logic, "Sirens" and "Helicopter" Godfather Don & Kool Keith and more. ✨✧ FieldOfficial – 1996/1997 Sessions ... LP
Hip Hop Enterprise, Mid 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from the Boston scene of the 90s – material that was issued on rare 12" singles and cassette-only releases by this Roxbury duo – brought together here on a much-needed full length set! The material's got the same no-nonsense quality of the best Boston work of the period – straightforward, and completely unapologetic to the bigger cities turning out hit hop hop at the time – almost the same back to basics approach that made some of the city's interest in soul music so great in previous decades. Themes aim towards the darker side of the spectrum, but do a great job of avoiding thuggish cliches – on titles that include "Other Side Of Town", "Rendezvous", "No Doubt", "Heavily Armed", "ROX Land", "Big Ssan & Tann", "My Whole Team", and "Ask 4".
