✨✧ Horace ParlanSpeakin' My Piece (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer set by one of the greatest pianists of the postwar era – and one that features Horace Parlan's piano trading lines with the legendary Turrentine brothers (both Stanley & Tommy), playing here at the height of their powers! Tommy Turrentine's trumpet is especially great here – spurring on Stanley's tenor into a groove that's a lot deeper, and more soulful than usual – a perfect sound in the frontline, kicked up nicely by Horace Parlan's piano! Rhythm is from the team of George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums – very tight and crackling throughout – and the album's easily one of the most cooking Blue Notes from the time. Titles include "Wadin", "Oh So Blue", "Speakin My Piece", "Up In Cynthia's Room", "Rastus", and "Borderline". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

✨✧ VariousPomegranates – Persian Pop, Funk, Folk, and Psych Of The 60s & 70s ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Bright Persian psychedelic pop, funk, soul and boundless grooves from the 60s & 70s – one of the greatest compilations yet from Finders Keepers! Many of the tunes are actually classics of the era's Iranian scene, if wildly fresh and new our ears, while others are quite obscure all around, but all of it is fresh and exciting exotic pop that we're thrilled to see collected. The sounds draw from the creatively fertile period when traditions were combined in music all around the world – with hypnotic eastern raga strings blended with global funk and jazz, bursting pop tunefulness and both meditative and instantly gratifying melodies of myriad influences, borderline disco grooves and beyond. Exciting stuff! 16 tracks in all: "Helelyos'" by Zia, "Biya Bar-e Safar Bandim" by Mohammad Nouri, "Talagh" by Googoosh, "Miravi" by Soli, "Kavir-e Del" by Marjan, "Naz Kardanet Vaveyla" by Sima Bina", "Sharm-e Boos-e" by Ramesh, "Cheshm-e Man" by Dariush and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ EvensongEvensong (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Beatball (Korea), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of those records that should have been a classic – but which maybe never hit the mark at the time because it was too perfect, too far ahead of its generation to score a bigger hit! At one level, Evensong work in the same mix of folk and strings that you might find from some of Joe Boyd's productions over at Island – especially the music of Nick Drake – but there's other currents here that reflect the acoustic hipness on the LA scene a few years before, too – not necessarily country-inspired, but with currents that are more American than usual for UK work of the time. The group are a duo – Tony Hulme and Mike Lawson – but the sound really comes from the fuller arrangements from Mike Moran and Ray Fenwick, who flesh out their core ideas beautifully. Titles include "Smallest Man In The World", "Dodos & Dinosaurs", "I Was Her Cowboy", "Store Of Time", "Rum Runner", "Sweetbriar Road", and "Borderline". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 500 copies – beautiful pressing, with great vinyl, cover, and insert!)

✨✧ Lee Fields & The ExpressionsMake The World (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Big Crown, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Lee Fields in storming fuzzy funk mode – a standout track from one of the greatest voices in classic school soul, backed by one finest backing bands in The Expressions! "Make The World" bursts out of the gate with heavy drums, punchy horns, and borderline sinister guitar sound, but the Lee's voice and the lyrics are anything but sinister – it's a hopeful number, determined to make the world better – Lee leading the call in impeccable form. The flipside instrumental version is an incredible showcase for the Expressions, who really nail it – even bringing in some funky flute at the end. 7-inch, Vinyl record
