✨✧ BorderlineSweet Dreams & Quiet Desires (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Avalanche/Universal (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the lesser-remembered country rock acts of the early 70s – and maybe one of the most compelling, too – as the group have a really rock-solid instrumental approach at the core, and also have a great way with a tune! The core trio hear features David Gershen, Jon Gershen, and Jim Rooney – all of whom sing and play guitar – on songs that are mostly originals, and which have a nicely fresh feel. Themes of the tunes are often a bit different than some of their contemporaries – just a bit, but enough to make a difference – and the instrumentation is augmented by studio help that includes fiddle from Vassar Clements, piano from John Simon, steel guitar from Ben Keith, and even a bit of sax work from a young David Sanborn. Titles include "Dragonfly", "Sweet Dreams", "Please Help Me Forget", "The Distance", "Marble Eyes", "Don't Know Where I'm Going", and "Marilla". CD

✨✧ Lawrence BlockBorderline (hardcover) ... Book
Hard Case Crime (UK), 1958. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early pulp from mystery writer Lawrence Block – pulled from a time when he was just getting started, and wasn't afraid to use the sort of grittier styles that were popular in magazine fiction of the period! The story is set on the Tex/Mex border, in Juarez and El Paso – and in a way, has some of the vibe of the film Touch Of Evil – especially in the sense that the main character's in a world where just about anything goes, and which provides a great backdrop to the narrative! The book's got a professional gambler, a sex show worker, and a crazed killer with a razor – and that's only just the tip of the iceberg – as the real charm with Lawrence Block really comes from the way he weaves the whole thing together, with prose that continually leaps of the page, but without any of the outdated cliches of some of his contemporary. This hardcover edition is 249 pages, and also includes three vintage Block stories from his years writing for the pulps. Book
(Spine has a small remainder mark.)

✨✧ Vernon JoynsonPotpouri Of Melodies & Mayhem – Latin American & Canadian Rock, Pop, Beat, R&B, Folk, Garage, Psych, & Prog 1963 to 1976 (paperback) ... Book
Borderline (Scotland), 2017. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue book from this legendary expert on psychedelia – a huge volume that matches the depth of Vernon Joynson's Tapestry Of Delights, but which looks at the rich legacy of music in Canada and Latin America! If you think there's not much to talk about here, then think again – because the book is huge, and overflowing with page after page of information on groups who never got full exposure at the time – amazing acts who were plenty darn experimental, and often in ways that were different than Anglo psych artists at the time. The book even gets into richer strands of Brazilian music – rightly giving Tropicalia and MPB artists some overdue credit in the world of psych – and the book offers up listings on hundreds of groups, along with information on their members, their record, and their histories – alongside hundreds of album covers too. The whole thing is huge – a super-heavy 884 pages, very large and detailed – with most images in black and white, but some color images in the middle. Book

✨✧ Del The Funky HomosapienBoth Sides Of The Brain ... LP
Hiero Imperium, 2000. Very Good 2LP ... $19.99
Brother George's legendary status aside, this is probably Del's strongest album over all, to our ears anyway. Del's early 90s debut brought the heavy, heavy funk (thanks in no small part to Del's cousin/producer Ice Cube) and an abstract, amusing, but still confrontational lyrical style that we really hadn't heard before. The highs on those first couple albums were just about as great as that era of hip hop could get, and if Both Sides Of The Brain doesn't contain the moments of dizzying aesthetic epiphany, it makes up for it with album length consistency. Both Sides has a literate approach, and ironic dives into the low brow that crack us up before alienating our beat happy selves with his borderline smug intelligence. Great, great hip hop that sounds as hot today as it did in 2000, and as it will in 2020! Includes "Time Is Too Expensive", "If You Must" , "Jaw Gymnastics", "Style Police", "Fake As F**k", "Disastrous", "Phoney Phranchise", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

EvensongEvensong (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Beatball (Korea), 1973. New Copy ... $14.99
One of those records that should have been a classic – but which maybe never hit the mark at the time because it was too perfect, too far ahead of its generation to score a bigger hit! At one level, Evensong work in the same mix of folk and strings that you might find from some of Joe Boyd's productions over at Island – especially the music of Nick Drake – but there's other currents here that reflect the acoustic hipness on the LA scene a few years before, too – not necessarily country-inspired, but with currents that are more American than usual for UK work of the time. The group are a duo – Tony Hulme and Mike Lawson – but the sound really comes from the fuller arrangements from Mike Moran and Ray Fenwick, who flesh out their core ideas beautifully. Titles include "Smallest Man In The World", "Dodos & Dinosaurs", "I Was Her Cowboy", "Store Of Time", "Rum Runner", "Sweetbriar Road", and "Borderline" – plus 6 bonus tracks including "Home Made Wine", "Romeo", and "Tell Me A Story"! MetallicaMaster Of Puppets (2LP 180 gram pressing – 45rpm) ... LP
Elektra, 1986. Sealed 2LP ... $49.99
An unimpeachable metal masterpiece! Master Of Puppets is one of the rare cases when the critical and popular consensuses match right up and are both right on the money – there's just no arguing against this being considered one of the greatest, most influential, and surprisingly timeless metal albums of all time – and it built that reputation organically, fan by fan, without radio or music videos to hype it. All the more impressive for the few disarmingly quiet moments and borderline pretty instrumental passages before the heaviness comes walloping back in. All classic songs on this one: "Battery", "Master Of Puppets", "The Thing That Should Not Be", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Disposable Heroes", "Leper Messiah", "Orion" and "Damage, Inc.". LP, Vinyl record album
(EU pressing, still sealed, and with original paper band – "Louder Faster Heavier".)

Ulysses Owens JrSongs Of Freedom – The Music of Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, & Joni Mitchell ... CD
Somethin Cool (Japan), 2018. New Copy ... $28.99
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

✨✧ MC5Kick Out the Jams ... CD
Elektra, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great big Dee-troit rawk, like no other group of madmen could have ever created! This is the album that established the Motor City as the capital of late 60s/early 70s gonzo psychedelic rock, and still stands as probably the most massive live recording of the era. Pile-driving outer space noise at it's finest! Recorded live at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit and featuring incisive liner notes by ringleader John Sinclair. Tracks include "Kick Out The Jams", "Come Together", "Rocket Reducer No. 62", "Borderline", "Motor City Is Burning", "I Want You Right Now" and "Starship". CD

✨✧ Thin LizzyJohnny The Fox ... LP
Mercury, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ok, so can we admit that we love this one for just what it is? Thin Lizzy's always been tops in our book – and at this point, they're at their best, and sound like everything that AM rock dreams are made of, albeit with a heavier crunch. However, in order to regain our credibility, we'll also point out that the album also contains the monster old school break "Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed" – with lots of tasty drums on the intro! Also includes "Johnny", "Rocky", "Borderline", "Don't Believe A Word", "Fool's Gold", "Old Flame", "Massacre", "Sweet Marie", and "Boogie Woogie Dance". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing with Masterdisk stamp, including the heavy inner sleeve. Cover has some surface wear.)

✨✧ Nai PalmNeedlepaw ... CD
Masterworks (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You'll know Nai Palm for her work with Haiatus Kaiyote – but here, the singer's in a completely different setting – one that's got a fair bit of acoustic elements in the music, but which is still plenty darn soulful overall! The shift almost reminds us of some of the best music from Linda Lewis in the 70s – as Nai Palm's vocals have this incredible range that only seems to get even more expression in a stripped-down setting – mostly with her own acoustic guitar as the core instrument, but almost always with other singers backing her up – so that there's this warmly-couched approach to the record, with loads of swirling harmonies – definitely keeping things more linked to soul than other modes. Titles include "Mobius", "Molasses", "Have You Ever Been To Electric Ladyland", "Atari", "Crossfire/So Into You", "Haiku", "Blackstar/Pyramid Song/Breathing Under Water", "When The Knife", "Atoll", and "Borderline With My Atoms".
