Funky funky Bobby! "Chicken Heads" is a great little bit of tripped-out bluesy funk – perfectly done in Bobby's funky 45 mode, with guitar slowly vamping and picking out a solo, and Bobby singing with ease in a deeply soulful mode. "Mary Jane" has a similar groove – although a bit funkier – and we can only imagine that all parties involved must have smoked a lot of it to make the cut cook so well! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Socking soul power! Bobby Rush cut this great single for Chess in the late 60s, and both sides are killer funky soul! "Sock Boo Ga Loo" is the virtual definition of a Sock Boogaloo cut – with a great hard drum sound, and a totally catchy groove throughout! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Funky keyboard work from Frank Strazzeri – a player who's really stretching out here in the 70s, with a massively cosmic vibe you'd never have guessed from his earlier work! Strazzeri had recorded and played heavily around the LA scene by the time of this mid 70s release – but most of his other work was a bit restrained, and hardly as wonderfully soulful as this! Frank's working here on moog and electric piano – in a group that includes Sam Most on tenor, Bobby Shew on trumpet, and Don Alias on percussion – grooving with Frank in a gently funky way that's got a heck of a lot of soul, and which makes for some nice extended tunes. A classic set from this legendary Detroit festival – a mighty assemblage of roots and jazz performers that was put together by John Sinclair! The event was legendary at the time – and has lived on strongly via this great recording by Atlantic – one that really gets at the special fire of all the performers, and their very enthusiastic welcome by the audience too! Most of the material here is blues – but the set features a key track from Sun Ra & His Solar Myth Arkestra – a performance of "Live Is Splendid" from the Space Is The Place Suite. A standout classic from trumpeter Luis Gasca – and a set that may well be the artists' most complete musical vision of the 70s! The group here is larger than on previous records, and Gasca's dropped a bit of his Latin roots in exchange for a soaring, slightly spiritual sound put together by arranger Don Menza – who's really at the top of his game here! There's a perfection and poise that's almost like CTI or Kudu at their best – almost a bit above the usual Fantasy Records session like this from the 70s, too! Other players include Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Menza and Hadley Caliman on reeds, Patrice Rushen on keyboards, and Harvey Mason on some mighty nice drums – which makes for more than a bit of funk in the mix.
