Surprisingly nice recent work from Blue Note organ jazz legend Big John Patton! The album was recorded in New York in 1993 – at a time when Patton was being rediscovered, and brought back into the light as an excellent player with a hell of a lot to offer, one who'd just been slowly forgotten by the record companies over the years. The session features some great (and surprisingly straight!) alto work by John Zorn, one of Patton's biggest supporters in this comeback time – plus tenor by Pete Chavez, tenor and soprano by Bill Saxton, guitar by Ed Cherry, and rhythm by old Blue Note players, with drums by Eddie Gladden and conga by Lawrence Killian. The best tracks on the album have an amazing searching groove – similar to that that Patton was crafting on his late Blue Notes, such as Understanding and Memphis New York Spirit. A very tight early session by the great organist Larry Young! The album's quite different than Young's later Blue Note work – more in-the-pocket soul jazz, but filled with the expansive sensibility that would later have him take off for the heavens. The biggest example of this tendency is the track "Talking Bout JC" – a cut dedicated to John Coltrane (who Young used to jam with, although sadly never on record!), recorded more famously later on Blue Note, but still sounding pretty hip here in an early take. Quite a groovy soundtrack – a mixture of vocal and instrumental numbers written by Billy for this groovy film about the liberated woman of the late 60s! The album sports a few vocal numbers by bigger stars – "Look Again" by the Brooklyn Bridge, "Used To Be" by Vicki Lawrence, and "As Far As I'm Concerned" by Bobby Russell – but the best tunes are the shorter instrumental ones by Goldenberg. These have a sparkling quality that mixes easy instrumentation, some slight grooves, and a few mode touches of instrumentation – like electric sitar, guitar, and more. What this means is that about half the album is very nice groovy music – with titles that include "La De Da", "Tommy Doesn't Like Rosie At All", "Traveling With A Star", "Christine In Las Vegas", "Bonanza Paree", and "Soft Music For Rosie". A brilliant set from The Cookers – a combo that includes the mighty Billy Harper on tenor sax, and who step out here with a soaringly brilliant sound that recalls some of Harper's best material in recent years! Yet Billy's only the tip of the iceberg, as all players are great – truly the cookers promised by the name– including Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpets, Craig Handy on alto sax, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – plus some key guest work from Azar Lawrence on tenor and soprano sax too! Quite hip stuff from McTyner – really righteous sounds from his 70s run for Milestone Records, recorded with a great lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Gary Bartz on alto, Azar Lawrence on soprano and tenor sax, Bulster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on percussion! With players like that, it would be hard to miss – but McCoy's also not one to just let the cats do their own thing – as he directs the group with a sense of power and majesty that's really wonderful. Tyner spins out long dramatic lines in a post-Coltrane Impulse mode that's almost more like Alice Coltrane than his usual bag – and the horn solos of Bartz and Lawrence really give the set a crackling edge. An excellent bit of early 60s soulbop – and one of two rare albums ever cut by the obscure female alto player Vi Redd, one of the few women sax players of her generation to get recorded! The album's got an easygoing groove that's mighty nice – a touch of R&B at times, but not nearly as much as you'd hear on Redd's other record for Atlantic – thanks to a sensitive jazz-based presentation by a group that also features a young Roy Ayers on vibes, making his first-ever appearance on record! Other players include Herb Ellis on guitar and Russ Freeman on piano – plus Kansas Lawrence on trumpet, who's clearly a bigger-name player working under another name. Vi sings on the record, in addition to playing alto sax – in this laidback way that's a bit like Trudy Pitts – and although the record's billed as a tribute to Charlie Parker, it's got a lot more going on than that!
