Alan MoorhouseKPM 1000 – Big Beat Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 19.99
The big beat here is plenty darn funky – but in some really weird and wonderful ways too – thanks to the genius talents of the mighty Alan Moorehouse, the legendary British maestro featured on this rare sound library album for KPM! Moorehouse is even more compelling than some of his funky contemporaries on the sound library scene – because he's not only got a great way of cooking up a short, simple, soulful groove – but he also puts the instruments together in really unusual ways, often to create sounds that veer past their simple origins, to make the grooves sound even greater! This album's a sound library masterpiece all the way through – the kind of set that makes you realize why this under-exposed genre of music is regarded so highly by modern beatheads – thanks to Moorehouse's use of organ, keyboards, funky drums, and a fair bit of acoustic guitar – quite unusual for a KPM set, but all the more compelling. Titles inlcude "Boss Man", "Soul Skimmer", "Pop Pastime", "That's Nice", "West Coastin", "Angelic Gas", "Expo In Tokyo", "Rock It Again", "Rockin Boogie", and "Pop Mandolin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Keith Mansfield/Alan HawkshawKPM 1000 – The Big Beat (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest sound library records ever made – a whopping batch of funky Hammond heavies from British legends Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw! The rare set was recorded right at the tail end of the 60s – and it's got a mod sort of style that mixes funky rhythms with some incredibly groovy work on organ – all in service of tight, short tunes originally recorded for use in radio and TV, but which is easily some of the best instrumental work coming out of the UK at the time! Both players are at the top of their game here – Hawkshaw, with plenty of those whomping grooves we love so much in his work with The Mohaws – and Mansfield, with a clean lean line on the keys that's equally great. Titles include "Exclusive Blend", "Teenage Travelogue", "Teenage Ton Up", "The Mexican DJ", and "Red Square Stomp" by Keith Mansfield – and "Studio 69", "Work Out", "Beat Me Til I'm Blue", "Senior Thump", "Tap Footer", "Delivery Date", "Man On The Move", and "Debsville" by Alan Hawkshaw. Francesco De MasiLa Macchina Della Violenza (aka The Big Game) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beat/Spettro (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
An excellent 70s Italian film score – penned for a political thriller, but handled with a fair bit of sweet and lovely themes! The album's one of the best we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi, and it nicely mixes his usual strong talents for action with a bit more warmth that befits the sexier side of the Italian cinematic spectrum. Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". Groovy, moddish, magnificent and sunny girl pop from The Land Of The Rising Sun – pummeling drums, jumping arrangements and groovy vocals from the mid-to-late 60s Japanese scene! This is fantastic stuff, any kitch or novelty appeal you might be expecting is kind of muted by the exceptional quality and excellent performances – but it is flat out fun! As the title states, strains of pop, beat & bossa – plus mod & psychedelic fuzz – and the vocals girl group vocals are bright, rocking, playful or sultry or innocent depending on the groove! 25 tracks in all: "Black Room by Jun Mayuzumi, Sharock No 1" by Mie Nakao, "Nagisa No Tenshi" by Mieko Hirota, "Hatsu Koi No Letter" by Miki Obata, "Bazazz Tengoku" by The Cupids, "Aeba Suki Suki" by Margaret With Bunnys, "Nukui Aitsu" by Mika Nohira, "Kiiro No Sekai" by J Girls and more. Naz Nomad & The Nightmares (The Damned)Give Daddy The Knife Cindy ... LP
Big Beat/Ace (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Looks like a 60s soundtrack, but the set's actually an unusual psychedelic project by The Damned – released as if the whole thing was a record designed to accompany one of those schlocky AIP exploitation films from years back – but actually better than most of those albums from a musical perspective! Given that the whole thing was recorded in 1983, it's actually surprisingly powerful stuff – and seems to preface the big wave of UK sounds from the Creation Records scene – a surprising move for The Damned, but one that comes off surprisingly well. Singer Naz Nomad is actually Dave Vanian – and tracks include covers of songs that the group loved, plus originals of their own. Titles include "Action Woman", "The Wind Blows Your Hair", "Kicks", "Cold Turkey", "She Lied", "I Can't Stand This Love Goodbye","The Trip", and "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night". Blazing 60s & 70s string-shredding mastery from Japan's great guitar instrumentals guru Takeshi Terauchi – whose playing matches the greatest 50s & 60s rock guitar gurus in both dexterous ability and pulpy mood setting! Takeshi put his own unique spin on the chugging styles of the period – hard-charging twang, surf and beat in the 60s, and distorted spacey and funky rock later on in the 70s – all of it pretty amazing! Includes "Ganroku Hanami Odori", "Rising Stars", "Sado Okesa", "The Clamour Of The Sun", "South Pier" and "Summer Boogaloo" by Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys, plus "Hoshi Eno Tabeji (Journey To The Stars", "Sa No Sa", "Touryanse", "Nambuzaka Yuki No Wakare", "Tsugaru Eleki Bushi" and more by Takeshi Terauchi & Blue Jeans. 14 tracks on the vinyl version. An incredible album – one of the greatest rock albums of the 60s, and a record we'd place right up there on the shelf next to Pet Sounds or Forever Changes! The arrangements are sublime – proof that the Zombies were growing way past just a simple Brit Invasion style, into a world of complicated orchestrations, subtle songwriting, and some of the most baroquely beautiful vocals ever recorded in the service of pop music! ✨✧ SonicsHere Are The Sonics ... LP
Etiquette/Big Beat (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Really early genius from The Sonics – and the kind of music that reminds us why the legendary group still continue to sound so wonderful after all these years! The Sonics had an edge that was different than most of their contemporaries – definitely honed on plenty of influences from earlier rock and R&B, but also letting loose with a kind of frenzy that not only made them one of the most stunning acts of the early garage psych years, but which continued to get the group plenty of interest once punk rolled in too. The highlights here might well be the group's standout originals – "The Witch", "Psycho", and "Strychnine" – worth the price of admission alone – but laid out here next to other great cuts that include "Do You Love Me", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Boss Hoss", "Money", "Walking The Dog", Nighttime Is The Right Time", and "Dirty Robber". Something Weird/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A sexy little film, with a sexy little soundtrack to match – just the right blend of funk and crime modes you'd expect for a movie that was a precursor to Charlie's Angels! The Doll Squad were a lot trashier, though – and it really shows in some of the music here, which has a great early 70s exploitation vibe at times, and some surprisingly nice jazz currents at others – much more in the vein of some hip Italian work of the period, especially with the instrumentation. Most numbers are quite short, but the set features lots of these cool cuts coming together nicely, with a bit of dialog too – and the set includes the vocal number "Song For Sabrina" – plus "Jealous Lady", "Doll Squad Theme", "Big Boom", "Double Trouble", "The Big Switch", and "Freedom Beat". Beat (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... $29.99
A nice little shark-themed soundtrack, but one that comes across with a vibe that's quite different than any of the music used for Jaws – partly because there's a number of vocal tunes in the mix! The set features three standout songs – "Hollywood Big Time" and "You've Changed The World For Me", sung by Yvonne Wilkins – and "Ballad", which is sung by composer Maurizio De Angelis himself – which are then mixed with instrumental numbers that are electric and keyboard-heavy, maybe more in line with Italian slasher/horror work of the period than you might expect! The colder electronics must have given the watery scenes a really great vibe on the screen – and the package features great sound throughout, and a mighty nice graphic appeal. LP, Vinyl record album

Tito PuenteEl Rey Del Timbale (aka Puente In Percussion) ... LP
Tico/Survival Research (Australia), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Essential grooves from Tito Puente – a really unique record for the time, and a set that's only grown in power over the years! The album's an all-percussion jam from Puente – one that strips away most other instrumentation, to focus just on heavy drum work from Puente and a core group of players that includes Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Patato Valdes! There's only just a bit of bass – played by Robert Rodriguez – to focus the energy of the percussion, and the timbales, congas, and bongos offer up both melodic lines and rhythmic grooves – a groundbreaking sound, recorded brilliantly back in the 50s! The album's got a killer stripped-down feel that you rarely get on other Tito Puente records – and tracks include "Tito on Timbales", "Swinging Mambo", "Congo Beat", "Sticks On Bongo", "Tito & Mongo On Timbales", "Four Beat Mambo", and "The Big Four". ✨✧ George RussellNew York, New York (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Decca, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... On January 29, 2021
A wonderful album from George Russell – and a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast that includes John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Max Roach, and Hal McKusick – all working together to paint tones on the tunes that George has crafted to set up his scene of New York in the 50s. Most importantly, though, Jon Hendricks acts as the narrator of the album – talking and scatting in hipster mode, laying out a bit of beat rapportage about the Big Apple, all done in a very cool 50s style that's a bit different from his own vocal work. Titles include "Manhattan", "Big City Blues", "Manhattan-Rico", and "A Helluva Town". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1959. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-overdue release of an unissued Blue Note session from 1959 – one that features a version of the Jazz Messengers right before Wayne Shorter joined the group, with the mighty Hank Mobley on the quintet lineup on tenor! The Messengers in 1959 and 1960 were really at the top of their game – and here feature the fantastic newcomers, Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, both of whom were helping drummer Blakey to form a new, evolved version of the sound he'd been crafting with other lineups in previous years – aided here by the rock-solid Jymie Merritt on bass! As with some of the other unissued Blue Note dates of this type, the whole thing is fantastic – not an unformed, half-baked session – but the kind of material that could stand right next to Blakey classics of the time, like The Big Beat or Moanin. A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! The blend of old and new is a bit like some of the collections we used to love from Gilles Peterson back in the last century – but Paul Murphy definitely has his own style and way of choosing a tune, and like Peterson, he has a great way of setting a new sort of fire with jazz – one that will burn strongly for generations to come! Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. Titles include "I'm Every Woman" by Latisha, "In The Rain" by rRnest Ranglin, "Reggae Beat Goes On" by Family Choice, "Ring My Bell" by Blood Sisters, "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" by Derrick Laro & Trinity, "Do It Nice & Easy" by Chariot Riders, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Upside Down" by Carol Cool, "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Sharon Forrester, "Rappers Delight" by Xanadu & Sweet Lady, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by Risco Connection, "Am I The Same Girl" by Charmaine Burnette, and "Be Thankful For What You Got" by One Blood. A wicked bit of 80s electro soul – one that's heavy on Yamaha keyboards and beats, but which was also recorded in Gabon – which gives the whole record a very different sound than New York material of the time! The rhythms are definitely in the funky soul side of the spectrum, but have different inflections and directions than big city beats from the street – maybe more complexity at points, but also a willingness to step back and allow some spots of bluesier inflections in the other instrumentation, which is mostly guitar – an instrument that has less of a rhythmic role here than on the usual soul album. Easily one of the funkiest albums that James Brown ever recorded – and one of his few entries into the blacksploitation genre of the 70s! James really outdid himself for this one – working at a hard burning pace that had the JBs cooking up some killer funk for just about every number in the set – and which also has James himself stepping out vocally for a few key tracks. The album features the massive groover "People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul" – a slamming track that beats nearly every number in the JB 70s catalog – plus other cuts that include "To My Brother", "Brother Rapp", "Sexy Sexy Sexy", "Slaughter Theme", "Transmogrification", "King Slaughter", and "How Long Can I Keep It Up". Soundway (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great set that moves towards the farther reaches of the Caribbean scene in the 80s – music that's much more underground than some of the bigger soca and tropical hits of the time! As you might expect from the Soundway label, the work here is a very unusual, very well-done presentation of a fresh slice of global music – Caribbean cuts that borrow bits from electro soul, house music, and other styles of the time – and weave the newer elements into island rhythms with a very forward-thinking feel! The tunes are heavy on keyboards and beats, yet still have a indie soul sort of charm – and as usual with Soundway, the whole thing comes with very detailed notes on the music. Most tunes are b-sides, dubs, or edits – and titles include "Last Days" by The Millers, "Wild Indian Band" by Andre Tanker, "Zion Gates (dub)" by Mohjah, "I Want Your Love" by Peter Britto, "Hotter & Hotter (dub edit)" by Juno D, "D'Jab Jab Dance (bad lad mix)" by Colin Jackman, "Fighting Soldier" by Cito Jarvis, "Stand Up & Rock Your Body (inst)" by Roger Bain, "Fire (ext dub edit)" by D Ivan, "Body Beat" by Bill Campbell, and "It's Alright" by Adonijah. Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 19.99
A funky treasure trove from Apple & The Three Oranges – a group we hardly know at all, but who really blow us away with the cuts on this collection! The groove is plenty hard right from the get-go – the best of the funky 45 underground of the early 70s – which means that there's more 60s rawness on the record than you'd get from bigger-label funk at the time – as Ed "Apple" Nelson still works here with a mostly underground vibe! Ed plays drums – which are mighty hard on most numbers – and his vocals have this offbeat, off-kilter, over the top quality that almost reminds us a bit of the Hank Ballard/James Brown recordings for late 60s King – particularly in the way that Nelson's completely unbridled with his energy. The whole thing's great – one of the best funky collections we've heard in years – and presented with a rich amount of notes and historical information too. Titles include "Free & Easy (parts 1 & 2)", "Moon Light", "Curse Upon The World", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Down Home Publicity", "True Love Will Never Die", "Gotta Stand For Something (parts 1 & 2)", and "I'll Give You A Ring". A sweet bit of funky soul from the Florida scene in the early 80s – a completely charming modern soul effort that's quite different than the bigger Miami hits of the decade before! These guys have a sense of integrity that comes through in their look on the cover – unassuming, and very down to earth – which maybe gives the whole thing that nice indie vibe of New Jersey work from ten years before, but with some of the grooves and styles that might be more contemporary to 1981! Fierce funky work from this late 80s UK duo – contemporaries of Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and some of the other big British acts of the time – but a pair who never fully got their due! The "street soul" title here is really well-placed – as the grooves have a style that's an evolution of earlier electro modes – warmed up nicely, in the style that Jazzie B and his generation were bringing to the scene – but maybe still lean enough in construction to still appeal to fans of the previous generation! Two tracks here get a bit clubby, but in a good way, and the others are more in a midtempo groove, nicely bouncing along with the beats – on titles that include "R U Available", "Change/Love", "In & Out Of Love", "It's All Over", "Waiting 4 Your Love", and "The Way Love Is". A strange name for a group that hardly stood the test of time – but a great record that's well worth discovering! Timeless Legend were a young soul group from Columbus Ohio in the mid 70s – and on this rare LP, they've got a sweet little style that's every bit as great as that of bigger acts of the time – sometimes as fragile as New Jersey male groups, other times as tight as the best from Philly! Peter ToshBush Doctor (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Parlophone/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A big crossover moment for Peter Tosh – a set that was issued on the Rolling Stones own label, with a bit of help from Keith and Mick themselves! But if that makes you worry about some clunky effort that tries to blend rock and reggae, you can put all your fears aside – as the set's got all the soulful charm that made Tosh one of the true giants of the 70s – potentially as influential as Bob Marley, especially at the time – and working with rock-solid help from Sly and Robbie on rhythms, and Mao Chung on lead guitar, Fender Rhodes, and even a bit of moog! Tracks include "You Gotta Walk Don't Look Back", "Pick Myself Up", "Soon Come", "Moses The Prophet", "Stand Firm", "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beatin", and "Creation". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Heaven Sent & EcstasyGreatest Love Story ... LP
Jamieko/P-Vine (Japan), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavenly soul from the start of the 80s – a sweet little indie set that's done as a tribute to Minnie Riperton and Kenneth Armstrong! The overall format doesn't have that much to do with Minnie, but the record's still pretty darn great – and the style is a mix of modern, mellow, and boogie – all served up with a real sense of earnestness that matches the cover of the album, and which makes the record stand strongly next to some of the bigger releases of the time. A number of tracks feature vocals by the lovely Pamela Morrison, and the group hails from the Oakland scene of the time – working here under the direction of Barbara J Trotter, who also wrote a good number of the titles on the set too. Titles include the dancefloor jammer "Sho Nuf Funky Beat", plus "We're Together Again", "I See Heaven", "Satisfaction To The Bone Nitty Gritty Naked Bone", "I'm A Lady", "Rapping With My Subconscious Mind", and "We're Together Again". B-Boy/Traffic, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary Davis/Chocolate StarChocolate Star – A Taste Of Chocolate – The Very Best Of Gary Davis ... LP
Traffic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Chocolate Star – less a group than a record label or project name used for some excellent underground club recordings from the late 70s and early 80s! Gary Davis is the real brainchild here – keyboardist, songwriter, and main spiritual force behind the music – but Peter Brown also played a big hand in some of the initial Chocolate Star sessions too, and there's a definite P&P groove to most of this work! The Chocolate Star touch is perhaps best known on the classic club track "Got To Get Your Love" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction – but it's even better on the more obscure work throughout the entire package – an array of tunes that run from funky club to other modes that include mellow soul, old school hip hop, and even some very spare tracks that mostly just have keyboards and beats! Titles include "Gee Dee", "Last Night", "Stay With Me", "Time For Love Is Now", "Super Jake", "Got To Get Your Love", "The Professor Here", "The Pop", "Gotta Get Your Love (Kenny Dope rmx)", "The Pop (12")", "The Professor Is Space Walking", and "Gee Dee (alt mix)". Def Jam, 1998. New Copy 2 LPs (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Peak period DMX – coming pretty quickly on the heels of the breakout It's Dark And Hell Is Hot – and a prime set of rough, raw Ruff Ryder hip hop circa '98! DMX's rhymes are nearly as brutal as that bloody cover photo, but he has such a knack for delivering even the most hardcore rhymes in the form of shout along anthems, he managed to take 'em to the top of the charts. The top notch production is a big part of that, too, plus first rate guests Mary J Blige, Jay Z, Swizz Beats and Lox. Includes "Coming From" featuring Mary J Blige, "Blackout" feat LOX & Jay-Z, "Dogs For Life", "Omen", "Slippin", "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood", "Heat", "Keep Your Sh*t The Hardest", "It's All Good", and others. ✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". ✨✧ VariousLibrary Archive – Funk, Jazz, Beats & Soundtracks From The Vaults Of Cavendish Music ... LP
BBE (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant funky instrumentals from the UK Cavendish Sound Library – a company who could sometimes recorded more staid music, although that certainly wasn't the case with the gems on this collection! The music is by a handful of British studio talents of the time – most of whom come from the jazz scene in earlier years – and provide a great update of their earlier talents with some very sweet electric touches! Many of these tunes have some really great keyboards – Fender Rhodes or even moogier elements – and many also have wicked basslines next to the funky drums, which really make things kick throughout. These tunes are vastly undiscovered – at least in comparison to better-known sound library funk from companies like KPM or DeWolfe – but we'd put these grooves right up there with the best of that bunch too. Titles include "Night Shade", "The Rally", "Southbound", "Snowmobile", "Night Driver", "The Trackers", and "Lady Killers" by Dennis Farnon; "Milky Way" and "Star Voyage" by John Scott; "Two Bars" and "The Scape Goat" by Pete Moore; "The Big Score" by John Cacavas, "One Way Trip" by Sam Fonteyn, "Smile Of A Stranger" by Dominic Sands, "Riff Raff" by Geoff Bastow, "Come Cuban" by Edward White, and "Kaleidoscope" by Tony Kinsey. Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... LP
Rozenblit/Audio Clarity (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Very groovy work from these two Brit sound library greats – loads of funky tunes, and great keyboards too – all served up in a massively funky record that was never issued to the public at large! Had this set hit the real record racks in 1974, it might well have challenged some of the greatest material from George Duke or Herbie Hancock – as the tunes are mostly funky, and feature lots of wonderful work on a wide variety of keyboards – sometimes getting all cool and wigged-out, even when the grooves are upbeat – a bit like Herbie in his Sextant years! Titles include "Hit Me Hit Me", "Big Black Cadillac", "Collision Course", "The Executive", "Hovercraft", "Mermaid", "Auto Glide", "Where The Action Is", and "Getting It Together". Don GereWerewolves On Wheels ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $22.99
A biker soundtrack to end all biker soundtracks – one that shares plenty of elements with better-known entries in the genre, but which also has some really wild and offbeat moments! As with most of the short-lived motorcycle soundtrack era, the vibe here is much more rock than other film scores of the time – written and performed by Don Gere, with a variety of styles that echo some of the fake groups that were often thrown together for bigger biker films – but sometimes with looser, weirder elements that really deliver the kind of sounds that we always expected on other biker soundtracks, but which were instead buried under piles of b and c-grade psych. Instead, Don really serves up the goods here – especially on some of the more fuzzy Satanic ritual tracks, which also have some great sound effects – and which then have you embracing some of the straighter rock tracks, almost as a relief. Titles include "Werewolves On Wheels (Main Theme)", "Mount Shasta Home", "Ritual", "Ritual 2", "The Devil's Advocates", "One Foot In Heaven", "Burning Grass", "Tarot", "Tarot Trail", "Dust Bowl", "Ritual 3", and "Werewolves On Wheels (End Theme)". Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". Linda Babe MajikaDon't Treat Me So Bad ... LP
Gallo/Be With (UK), 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Groovy South African soul from Linda Bab Majika – a singer who's part of that new generation of positivity that was flowing out of the scene, reaching out here with a sound that's pretty universal in appeal! The music is more conventional 80s soul than you might expect – and richer and fuller than some of the synth-heavy work of the period in South African soul – still with lots of beats and keyboards, but a bolder production sound that really suits Linda's vocals! There are occasional elements that you might recognize from bigger crossover world acts – such as the South African artists who were getting play on US radio – but the overall sound is more soul than anything else, on titles that include "Let's Make A Deal", "It's Our Home", "Don't Treat Me So Bad", "Play Boy", and "Kunzima". The huge creative leap forward for Outkast – and one of the greatest hip hop albums ever! The duo laid some incredible groundwork with the debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but this one is really their first (and stunningly, not their last) masterpiece. Timeless and soulful outer space grooves lace teh production and beats behind crazy good, free flowing, inventive rhymes that still manage to stay grounded enough to aptly reflect the darker realities of the ATL of the time. Most tracks have a laid back southern fried groove, and Dre and Big Boi's rhymes are as great as ever here. Essential! Sun Ra & John CageJohn Cage Meets Sun Ra – The Complete Concert (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Meltdown/Modern Harmonic, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.98
A legendary meeting of talents from two different sides of the underground – avant composer John Cage and jazz visionary Sun Ra – both performing together at a special one-night event that took place at Coney Island in 1987! The set doesn't really feature Ra jamming with Cage (as if anyone could "jam" with John Cage!) – and instead, both players were on the stage at the same time, but would each step aside to let the other do their thing – Cage would vocalize in these amazing passages that are right up there with the most beautiful vocal work he ever did, alongside some "silent" performances too – and Ra would play keyboard solos that have a beautifully offbeat electric vibe! The pair do come together at one point – but mostly in a "silent" duet, although one title does feature Cage's weird vocals with Ra's keyboard. And big bonus – this package also presents the full complete concert – with material that appears here for the first time ever – including a beautiful vocals from June Tyson over Ra's keyboards on "Enlightenment", other Ra numbers that include "This Is The Space Age", "The Living Parable", "The Damned Air", and "We Hold This Myth To Be Potential". Stones Throw, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really great Stones Throw debut from Twilite Tone – a Chicago beatmaker who's been one of our local heroes for years, and who finally gets the wider exposure he's deserved for way too long! Tone's done some big name work for Common, Kanye, and others – but here, he's very much at home inside his wonderful little shell – creating these endlessly creative sounds that really move past the obvious, and which showcase the kind of richer sonic palette we would have guessed from his record shopping habits over the years! There's a few 80s electro modes that come as a great surprise, mixed with harder core elements too – and there's occasional moments of sweetness, too – a emotional range that comes across nicely, on titles that include "N'Loveagain", "Tuff Love", "The Sound", "Do It Properly", "Taxi Cab Confessions", "The Lite", "Baby Steps", and "Ancestors & Angels". Many of the cuts here never broke big back in the day, but were discovered and brought back strongly by soul collectors in more recent decades – mixed together here with a few classics, all for a set list that's overflowing with gems from Motown, Chess, and other classic labels! Foreign Exchange, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Laidback beats with plenty of boom – just the right sort of mellow setting to allow the rhymes to flow in the best way possible – core lyrics from Emcee Sick, with contributions from Cudtry Cadillac, Dheema, and Jon Blazini! There's a nicely jazzy current – almost in an early 90s Tribe Called Quest style, but more individual, as the best instrumental touches are live, and less tied to the historical references that samples might provide. Both the rhythms and lyrics are nicely straightforward – again a nice sort of throwback, but hardly retro at all – on titles that include "Pstabull", "Finesseful", "Basso", "Indestructible 92", "Big Bad Signal", "Anotha Monday Nite", and "Wanderverse". One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". Past Due, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive batch of rare club tracks unearthed by Chicago's Past Due label, packaged together wonderfully as a document of a lost side of soul and disco! So far, Past Due's efforts have only surfaced as expensive 12" singles – so this collection is the first full length set to showcase the label's music – a treasure trove of under-discovered gems from the indie soul underground of the late 70s and early 80s! The music is to the far left of some of the better-known club work from the east coast of the time – including that of P&P Records – and most cuts here almost fall more in the upbeat funk mode than conventional disco grooves you'd find on bigger labels. Most numbers groove along in a wave of bumping bass, sweet keyboards, and other hip instrumental touches – and vocals are usually deep and soulful, much more so than in ordinary club. Titles include "Galaxy" by Visions Of Tomorrow, "Midnight Rhythm" by The Right Direction, "The Heat Is On" by Lonnie Givens, "Get Up Get Down & Let Your Body Pop" by Greyship Daviz, "Dance" by Destiny In Time Band, "Party" by Monofide, "Kiss You Everywhere" and "You Are Number One" by Devarne, "You Bring Out The Best In Me" by Destiny In Time, and "If You Like What We're Doing" by The Fabulous Kings. There's a sly humor to Malibu Ken that doesn't play quite as cynical as at can on some the more dystopian sci-fi sounding production Aesop Rock has rhymed over going all the back to the Def Jux days. There's still nicely futuristic vibe, courtesy Tobacco with squalling synth sounds and beats like a digital engine revving up, but there's a more playful kind of vibe, too. There's a bit of a link here – between earlier Italian scoring, ala Nino Rota, and some of the later, modder sounds of Piccioni's late 60s generation – a really cool blend that comes through in the way the horns play with the rhythms, and the organ has a strange, almost outer-space sort of quality! One number has a cool batucada feel, and the whole thing's got a brilliant Italian cinematic quality – a true under-discovered gem from the great Piccioni. A revelatory selection of tracks recorded on a Nairobi music scene that was really overflowing with creative energy – so much so that the music here doesn't just come from Kenyan talents, but from Tanzania and the Congo as well! There's a positive spirit that imbues most of the grooves – sounds that are upbeat and pulsating with rhythm – yet also put together at a level that's never too commercial at all – especially resisting the temptations that over-polished so much other music from the continent during the big world music boom of the 80s. Instead, these tunes revel in long, open interplay between guitars, bass, percussion, and voice – on selections that include "Ochieng DJ Komoro" by Victoria Chomeka, "Maria" by Orchestra Moja One Band, "Remmy Belesa" by Biashara Jazz Band, "Gilbert Wambida" by International De Nelly, "Amemiki (part 2)" by Orchestra Bana Ekanga, and "Nakuomba" by Baba Ilunga Wa Ilunga – a lost archive track, which appears here for the first time ever.
