Behn GilleceMindset ... CD
Posi tone, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The first solo album as a leader from vibist Behn Gillece – a player who's been making great sounds on other sessions for the Posi-Tone label in recent years! Behn's voice is very firmly upfront here – on a set of all original compositions that really showcase his unique approach to the vibes – a style that can be hard and biting one minute, but filled with flowing currents of color the next – a mode that sometimes owes a bit to Bobby Hutcherson, but which really stands out as Gillece's own unique approach – and which is one of the freshest voices on vibes we've heard in years! The group's a quintet – with frequent musical partner Ken Fowser on tenor, plus Rick Germanson on piano and Fender Rhodes, Paul Gill on bass, and Charles Ruggiero on drums. Behn wrote all the tunes – and titles include "Crashing Down", "One Mile With You", "The Great Quarterly", "Mindset", "Things Are Happening", and "The Mean Sea". CD

✨✧ Behn GilleceDare To Be ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Behn Gillece is fast becoming one of our favorite vibists of the contemporary era – a musician who's got the sense of tone and color that we love in Bobby Hutcherson, and able to move with a swinging, soulful sound that always makes his instrument a welcome presence on any recording – especially his few dates as a leader! This one's a corker – the kind of set that announces Behn as an incredible presence right from the very first notes – then opens up into wonderfully warm territory that makes plenty of space for his well-chosen groupmates – Bruce Harris on trumpet, Nate Radley on guitar, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums – a group that's got a sharply swinging groove that works perfectly with the bold attack that Gillece brings to the vibes. Titles are almost all originals – highlighting Behn's skill as a writer, too – and tracks include "Camera Eyes", "From Your Perspective", "Amethyst", "Dought's End", "Live It", "Trapezoid", and "Dare To Be". ✨✧ Behn GilleceWalk Of Fire ... CD
Posi tone, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A date that's not only a great showcase for the mighty vibes talents of Behn Gillece, but which also has the musician working alongside some of his best labelmats as well! We love Gillece in any setting – as his work on vibes is some of the freshest of the past decade or so, and Behn's one of the few artists to really bring a strong new voice to the instrument! And he's also a vibist who seems to take off even more in the company of a horn player – unlike some vibes musicians, who really only ever record with a piano – which means that here, he's getting some great strengths from the talents of Michael Dease on trombone, Walt Weiskopf on tenor, and Bruce Harris on trumpet – in a group that also includes Adam Birnbaum on piano, Clovis Nicolas on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums. All tracks are originals – Behn's a hell of a writer, too – and titles include "Fantasia Brasileira", "Walk Of Fire", "Bag's Mood", "Break Tune", "Celestial Tidings", and "Reflective Current". CD

Ken FowserStanding Tall ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
We last heard tenorist Ken Fowser in the company of vibist Behn Gillece – on a pair of excellent recent albums for the Posi-Tone label – but here he works as the sole leader, and maybe knocks it out of the park even more! All the tunes here are originals by Ken – who continues to be a hell of a writer, and comes up with songs that are bright and bold, yet also filled with deeper lines of feeling too – almost like some of Wayne Shorter's excellent early compositions in the first half of the 60s. Like Shorter in those days, Fowser has a way of working in a deeply soulful mode, but with strong lyrical currents too – echoed nicely here by the trumpet lines of Josh Bruneau, in a quintet that also include Rick Germanson on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums. The album's the kind of subtle gem that we've really come to love from Posi-Tone – and titles include "Off The Path", "Mode For Red", "Brick's Tune", "Hanging On", "Head Start", "Filling In The Blanks", and "Timeless". Walt WeiskopfWay You Say It ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Tenor, vibes, and organ – a great combination here in the hands of leader Walt Weiskopf, who also wrote most of the tracks on the record! Walt's records have been some of our favorites on the Posi-Tone label in recent years – and here, he works with label heavyweights Behn Gillece on vibes and Brian Charette on Hammond – with drums from Steve Fidyk in a beautifully balanced quartet! Charette's got these long-flowing lines on the Hammond that are both melodically matched and periodically punctuated by Gillece on vibes – with sounds that can brew slowly together, or really take off – as Walt blows these nicely-edged solos throughout! Titles include "Dreamlining", "Separation", "Coffee & Scones", "Envisioned", "Invisible Sun", "Manny Boy", and "The Way You Say It". CD

✨✧ Fukumi with Eric AlexanderMoon In Paris (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Think (Japan), 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Moon in Paris, recorded in New York – as Japanese singer Fukumi works with some of that city's top jazz talents – including Eric Alexander on tenor sax, Behn Gillece on vibes, David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums! The instrumental core of the album is wonderful – very much in the Alexander/Hazletine camp – and Fukumi's a hell of a singer, too – one who can put forth the lyrics at one point, then scat wordlessly with a very melodic approach – a style that sounds especially nice next to the piano and vibes! Production is wonderful – lean, clean, and just the right mode to capture the interplay between the singer and the band – and all arrangements are by Hazeltine, who also plays a bit of Fender Rhodes. Titles include Fukumi's original "Moon In Paris" – plus nice takes on "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life", "Devil May Care", "Once Upon A Summertime", "Sunny", "I Will Wait For You", "Yesterday When I Was Young", and "This Girl's In Love With You". ✨✧ Walt WeiskopfFountain Of Youth ... CD
Posi tone, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Walt Weiskopf is fast becoming one of our favorite contemporary tenorists – a musician who's not just strong on his own instrument, but able to place himself amidst a very fresh setting with each new release! This set has Walt working with a top-shelf lineup of Positone labelmates – including the great Behn Gillece on vibes, Peter Zak on piano, Mike Karn on bass, and Steve Fidyk on drums – musicians who do a really great job of soaring along with Weiskopf's sound, and finding all the right stops along the way! The blend of vibes, piano, and tenor is wonderful – Gillece is also one of our favorite contemporary players – and Walt's got this soulful presence that offsets the other two instruments beautifully. Titles include "Echoes Of The Quiet Past", "Backstage Blues", "Petal", "Hot Dog Days", "Heads In The Clouds", and "Double Date". CD

✨✧ Michael DeaseFather Figure ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best album so far from trombonist Michael Dease – and that's saying a lot, because we've really loved a lot of his other records! The set's got a punch and a crackle that really lives up to Dease's brilliant phrasing on the trombone – a sound so tight, it almost matches at trumpet at points – and clearly marks Michael as one of the most deft (or mos def, if you prefer!) players on his instrument in the current scene. The lineup is great, too – and makes wonderful use of the vibes of Behn Gillece, whose tones have really, made some other recent gems from the Posi-Tone label shine, and which sound tremendous alongside the ringing piano lines of Glenn Zaleski. Some tracks feature a bit of guest alto from Markus Howell and Immanuel Wilkins – who shade in the tunes beautifully, and give them even deeper currents of soul – and the group also features Endea Owens on bass and Luther Allison on drums. Dease wrote some great tunes for the date – "Brooklyn", "Father Figure", "Cry Of The Wolf", and "Church Of The Good Hustler" – and the set also features versions of Mulgrew Miller's "Wingspan" and Grachan Moncur's "Riff Raff".
