Barney WilenFrench Ballads (with bonus tracks) ... CD
IDA/Elemental, 1987. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Pure magic from saxophonist Barney Wilen – captured here at a point when his powers were really back in full force, and when he seemed to be at his most soulful when handling a gentle, easygoing sort of tune! The ballads in the title are definitely out in full force – served up in a mixture of famous French melodies, past and present – so that older postwar melodies are mixed with more contemporary moments from Michel Legrand – with a lyrical vibe that's really emphasized by the superb work on piano for the set by Michel Grallier! The rest of the group is great, too – and players include Sangoma Everett on drums, and Riccardo Del Fra on bass – the last of whom you might know from some fantastic albums with Chet Baker in later years. Wilen blows tenor and a bit of soprano – and titles include "L'Ame Des Poets", "Une Ete 42", "My Way", "Once Upon A Time", "Sous Le Ciel De Paris", "Syracuse", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". CD features new mastering, and four bonus tracks – alternate takes of tunes on the album! CD

IDA/Anagram, 1987. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really special album from French tenorist Barney Wilen – a set of tunes originally recorded to accompany a graphic novel about his troubled life – done at a time when Wilen had emerged from years of obscurity, and was opening up a whole new chapter in his music! The presentation here is a bit different than some of his other records of the time – as Wilen blows tenor on a set of tracks that follow the musical journey of his life – early standards, French new wave soundtrack themes, and even some of the global experiments he did while in Africa – before turning to some of the strong work that he did on his return. The group is wonderful – the great Alain Jean Marie on piano, Philippe Petit on guitar, Ricardo Sel Fra on bass, and Sangoma Everett on drums – and titles include "Besame Mucho", "Goodbye", "Triste Again", "Whisper Not", "Un Baiser Rouge", and "Les Jours Heureux". This great package features new mastering of the album, 28 page booklet of liner notes and photos, a bonus CD with a live 1989 performance with Jacky Terrasson on piano – and four bonus tracks added to the original album! Elemental, 1993. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Sublime later work from French saxophonist Barney Wilen – working here with pianist Alan Jean-Marie, an artist that we totally love on his own! Some people know Jean-Marie best for his recordings of biguine jazz – mixing the rhythms of his native Martinique with more contemporary modes on piano – but here, he's in his other great mode of the time – this open, flowing, spaciously stepping sort of quality – which really brings out the best in Wilen on both tenor and soprano – showing especially the sort of extended, snakey solos that he always brought to his best live recordings in his final decades! The pairing is somewhere in the territory of Stan Getz and Kenny Barron on duo mode – but with the very big difference of the distinct musical personalities of Barney and Alain – on titles that include "Round Midnight", "I'm A Fool To Want You", "Repetition/No Problem", "My Funny Valentine", "Skating In Central Park", and "Besame Mucho". 2CD set features both the first and second sets of the evening – 17 tracks in all! ✨✧ Barney Wilen with the Mal Waldron TrioFrench Story (aka Movie Themes From France) ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best later albums by French tenor genius Barney Wilen – a true gem that's far better than the title might indicate! The tunes, as you might guess, are all themes from French films – stretching back to the late 50s jazz/new wave days, when Wilen recorded on a few brilliant soundtracks with Miles Davis and Art Blakey – and moving forward into later years to include a few great tunes from the 60s French scene. The group on the set is Mal Waldron's excellent trio with Stafford James on bass and Eddie Moore on drums – the three of them rounding out the tunes with a strong degree of soul, and lots of open notes and space, which lets Wilen do some incredible work on both tenor and soprano saxes. Tunes are all quite long, and really depart from the original structures – and titles include "Un Homme Et Une Femme", "Les Parapluies De Cherbourg", "Manha De Carnaval", "No Problem", and "Julien Dans L'Ascenseur". ✨✧ Barney WilenDear Prof Leary (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
MPS/Promising (Germany), 1968. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A quintessential MPS session – a tribute to the psychedelic influences of Timothy Leary, put together by the famous French tenor player Barney Wilen in an amazing mix of funk, jazz, and jamming! The sound is incredible – a perfect illustration of the mindblowing genre-blurring sound going on at the MPS label during these key years – recorded with top-shelf production that really makes the whole thing explode! Wilen plays here with his "Free Rock Band" – an electrified collective that features Aldo Romano on drums, Joachim Kuhn on organ, Mimi Lorenzini on guitar, and Gunter Lenz on bass – all working in a similar vein to some of Dave Pike's wilder albums, or the legendary Oimels album by Wolfgang Dauner! The band performs an incredible stoner funk version of "Ode To Billy Joe", a wildly spacey take on "The Fool On The Hill", the tight funky jammer "Dur Dur Dur", and a haunting moody electric version of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman". The whole thing caps off with a wild avant funky version of Otis Redding's "Respect" – and the record's a stone winner all the way through! CD

✨✧ Barney WilenLive In Tokyo 1991 ... CD
Elemental, 1991. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Marvelous late work from tenorist Barney Wilen – the French reedman who first rose to fame in the late 50s, with crucial recordings with Miles Davis and Art Blakey – then really faded from view for most of the next few decades, before making a fantastic late life comeback, with a sound that was even better than before! We love all of the later Barney Wilen records a great deal, but we especially love his work in a live setting – as over the years, Wilen developed this tremendous ability to really stretch out on a solo, and still remain creative – hitting a level that matches the talents of tenor giants like Dexter Gordon or Johnny Griffin, save for the fact that Barney could also play soprano sax, which he does here, in addition to some of the tenor tunes. The group's a tight quartet – with superb work from pianist Olivier Hutman, who also plays some electric piano in addition to acoustic, plus Gilles Naturel on bass and Peter Gritz on drums. All material is issued here for the first time ever – and titles include "Beautiful Love", "L'Ame Des Poetes", "Little Lu", "Mon Blouson", "Besame Mucho", "Goodbye", "No Problem", "Latin Alley", "Bass Blues", "Doxy", "Old Folks", and "How Deep Is The Ocean". ✨✧ Barney WilenMoshi ... CD
Saravah (France), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wild and groundbreaking record recorded by the great French tenor player Barney Wilen! Although he got his start as a bebopper in the 50's, Wilen sort of dropped out of sight by the end of the 60's – and only emerged from time to time to cut strangely experimental sides. This record is unlike anything he ever made, and features a wild mix of African rhythms, ambient sound, and Wilen's deep deep tenor. By this point, Wilen had been absorbing a lot of different influences, from Coltrane, to Pharoah Sanders, to some of the European free players, and his sound is a weird mish mash of styles that weaves in and out of all the stuff on the record. It's a haunting bit of afro jazz and funky noise, with some cuts that are spacey, and others that are nice and funky. Includes the cuts "Afrika Freak Out" and "Zombizar", plus lots of other goodies! Elemental, 1988. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Great work from French tenor genius Barney Wilen – a live festival set from 1988, a year when Wilen was really making a strong comeback to the scene – in a group that also features Spanish piano legend Tete Montoliu, plus Riccardo Del Fra on bass and Aaron Scott on drums! The setting is a great reminder of how much Wilen can adapt in different groups – especially from this stretch, when he was often playing with more familiar lineups. Montoliu really opens up Barney in a different way than other pianists – and gets in plenty of great solo work of his own – on long tracks that include "Summertime", "L'Ame Des Poetes", "La Valse Des Lilas", "It Never Entered My Mind/Invitation", "Blues For DN", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "Billie's Bounce", "Round Midnight", "All The Things You Are", and "Sous Le Ciel De Paris/Autumn Leaves". Universal (France), 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's no secret that some of the greatest jazz soundtracks ever were recorded in Paris – and this CD contains 2 of them! First up is the landmark Un Temoin Dans La Ville – recorded under the leadership of tenor sax player Barney Wilen, who had made such a huge contribution to Miles Davis' famous score for Acenseur Pour L'Echafaud. Wilen's score features 12 incredible tracks that are just dripping with black and white cinematic mood – played by a group that includes Kenny Dorham, Duke Jordan, and Kenny Clarke. Titles on that set include "La Pendaison", "Sur L'Antenne", "SOS Radio Taxis", "La Vie N'est Qu'Une Lutte", and "Ambiance Pourpre". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD are from the very rare soundtrack to J'Irai Cracher Sur Vos Tombes – written and arranged by pianist Alain Goraguer, with a group that includes trumpeter Roger Guerin, vibist Michel Hausser, and bassist Pierre Michelet. The soundtrack recalls a lot of Davis and Wilen's work together – and tracks include "Theme De Liz", "Blues De Memphis", and "Surprise Partie Au Bord De L'Eau". CD

✨✧ Miles Davis with Barney WilenAmsterdam Concert ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lost Miles Davis concert – recorded in 1957, with many of the same players he used for his classic soundtrack to the French film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud! The group's a quintet with French players Barney Wilen on tenor, Rene Utreger on piano, and Pierre Michelot on bass – grooving with help from Kenny Clarke on drums – and tracks are longish and include many late 50s jazz standards – like "Bag's Groove", "Four", "Walkin", "Round Midnight", and "Lady Bird". Barney Wilen's young tone is razor sharp at this point – and makes for a great counterpoint to the sweeter horn of Miles, coming together with the same magic they shared in their wonderful soundtrack work together. There's a bit of crackle in the recording quality, but the concert's well worth seeking out! CD

VariousJazz Club – Cool Jazz ... CD
Jazzclub/Verve (Germany), 1950s/1960s. Used ... $4.99 6.99
Way more than just a simple collection of famous cool jazz numbers – and instead, an ultra-hip set that shows the evolution of the original sound over the space of decades and the stretch of two continents! The collection nicely avoids the obvious overplayed west coast examples of the sound, and goes for some less obvious gems that show the way that players in the late 50s and 1960s took the initial cool jazz inspiration and expanded it tremendously in a range of different modes! As with other titles in the excellent Jazz Club series, the tracks here are pulled from Universal-owned labels like Verve, Impulse, and MPS – recorded on both sides of the Atlantic in the 50s and 60s, and brought together here in one well-done, low-priced package. Titles include "Nuages" by Barney Wilen, "The Cool One" by Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet, "Harper" by Ed Thigpen, "Crackle Hut" by Max Roach, "Coolie" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cleo's Asp" by Paul Gonsalves, "Serenade In Blue" by Stan Getz, "Snap Crackle" by Roy Haynes, "Foolin Myself" by Lee Konitz, "The Gentle Art Of Love" by Hans Koller, and "Wintersong" by Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond. Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.98
That's Miles Davis and Jeanne Moreau on the cover – and image is a perfect summation of what makes this period in film music so unique! The set brings together music from the French new wave of the late 50s and early 60s – a time when revolutionary directors were putting fresh new images on screen, and also turning to lots of new ideas for their music, too – using jazz musicians like Miles to create some of their soundtracks, and also moving past some of the more overblown orchestral styles that had dominated most of the world of film scores during the postwar years. Much of the work used by these directors was in a style that was closer to the people, and more fitting for the sorts of themes in the films – and this 3CD collection features a wonderful array of different modes from the period. Many films are included here with a few selections from their famous soundtracks – and the 3CD package includes work from Tires Sur Le Pianiste (Shoot The Piano Player) by Georges Delerue, A Bout De Souffle (Breathless) by Marial Solal, L'Eau A La Bouche by Serge Gainsbourg, A Double Tour by Paul Misraki, Les Liaisons Dangereuxes by Art Blakey with Barney Wilen, La Tete Contre Les Murs by Maurice Jarre, Le Bel Age by Georges Delerue, Les Bonnes Femmes by Paul Misraki, Jules Et Jim by Georges Delerue, Lola by Michel Legrand, Les 400 Coups (400 Blows) by Jean Constantin, Une Femme Est Une Femme by Michel Legrand, Zazi Dans Le Metro by Fiorenzo Carpi, Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud by Miles Davis, and Cleo De 5 A 7 by Michel Legrand. Atlantic, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We would gladly trade every other John Lewis album for a copy of this album – because the album's a treasure all the way through – and a really unique set, with a really unique feel! The session features Lewis' piano in the company of a hip French group that includes Sasha Distel on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and the great Barney Wilen on tenor – all great players who bring out a whole new side of Lewis' genius! Wilen's solos alone are worth the price of the album – deeply soulful, with a resonant tone that's some of his greatest on record – and an easy illustration of why he was one of the few European players of the postwar years to get big notice on this side of the Atlantic. But amazingly, Sacha Distel's also great here too – and despite the fact that he later went onto become a vocal pop star, Distel displays a beautiful approach to jazz guitar that makes us wish we had more sessions of his from these days. Titles include "Afternoon In Paris", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "All The Things You Are" – but don't let the titles alone speak for the record, because every track is beautiful! CD

✨✧ Miles DavisCinema Of Miles Davis ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A compelling exploration into the use of the music of Miles Davis in film – one that begins with a famous French soundtrack from the new wave generation, then moves onto vintage Miles tunes that were used in other movies over the years! The core of the record features Davis' score to the 1957 film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud – one of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a stunning soundtrack that began a rich legacy of jazz scores in France! Miles recorded this material during late-night post-gig sessions with a great group that includes French players Barney Wilen, Rene Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot, plus American ex-patriot Kenny Clarke. Wilen's playing is fantastic, and it's great to hear him and Miles together on the score's spooky meandering passages. Alongside that body of work, the CD also features Davis songs that were used in a variety of films from the 70s onward – tracks that weren't written for the films, but which had strong use in movies that include Lenny, Kerouac, Tacones Lejanos, Ginger & Rosa, Talented Mr Ripley, and La Flor De Mi Secreto. These titles include "Saeta", "Blue Haze", "Tempus Fugit", "Well You Needn't", "It Never Entered My Mind", "Nature Boy", "Solea", and "Blue In Green". Also features a selection each by Lenny Bruce and Jack Kerouac! CD

✨✧ Miles DavisAscenseur Pour L'Echafaud ... CD
Fontana, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a groundbreaking soundtrack that forever changed the way that jazz music was used in film! According to legend, the sounds here were recorded by Miles on a hot Paris night – late in the studio, after a live performance – in a very intimate setting that had he and the combo creating these little poetic passages along with the action in the film! In addition to sublime and moody muted trumpet from Miles – the small group also features tremendous tenor work from the great Barney Wilen – a French modernist who's at the height of his powers – and beautiful bass from Pierre Michelot, whose rich tones really frame the whole proceedings. The rest of the group features bop pianist Rene Urtreger and American drummer Kenny Clarke – but the real charm comes from the interplay between Wilen, Davis, and Michelo. Titles include "Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "L'Assassinat De Carla", "Diner Au Motel", "Evasion De Julien", "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Le Petit Bal", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac" and "Sur L'Autoroute". The whole album's got quite a unique feel – one that's as airy as that of the MJQ work of the time, but not nearly as academic or sleepy – thanks to a nice biting tone from Perkins' tenor, which really seems to stretch out in the space provided by Lewis. ✨✧ Harry VerbeckeGibraltar/It's You Or No One/Plays Romantic Ballads (3CD set) ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Three albums from this great reedman! Gibraltar features a killer Dutch duo from the end of the 70s – tenorist Harry Verbeke, who's got a bold, clear sound – and pianist Rob Agerbeek, who's been making soulful sides from the 60s onwards! The pair get great accompaniment here from drummer Billy Higgins and bassist Herbie Lewis – the last of whom may be at his best here – with these well-placed, well-rounded lines that help the record groove right from the start – and which give the record a nice bounce, even in gentler moments – followed up strongly by Agerbeek and his strong sense of chord progressions. Most tunes are familiar, but get nice readings by the group – and titles include "Gibraltar, "Holy Land", "Soul Sister", "No Me Esqueca", and "No Problem". It's You Or No One is a gem, as Harry Verbeke's a tenor player we grow to love more and more over the years – especially as we discover more of his obscure Dutch recordings like this album from the 70s! Verbeke's a tenorist who's completely fully-formed and strong-voiced right from the very first note – maybe indicated by his choice of a Barney Wilen tune to lead off the set – as, like Wilen, Harry's one of these great under-discovered European talents who really helped move his instrument forward, but away from recognition on our side of the Atlantic. The rest of the group is top-shelf too – the great Irv Rochlin on piano, Harry Emmery on bass, and Max Bollerman on drums – on titles that include "Blue Bossa", "Prelude In Blue", "Mariette", "Sugar", and "Chelsea Bridge". As for Harry Verbeke Plays Romantic Ballads, the title's no lie, but it can't even begin to get at the very special sound of the record – as there's a lot more going on here than just a saxophonist taking on American standards! Harry Verbeke's got this sense of tone and phrasing that are very much his own – a quality that we love on his harder-swinging records from the 70s, but which opens up with even more individuality here – a raspy sort of charm that's hard to describe in words, but which makes the album very different than so many other tenor outings of this type. Another strong element is the use of organ instead of piano – an instrument played here by Carlo De Wijs, who mostly shades in things under Harry's lead, rather than try to challenge him to a sonic battle – as the core get gentle support from Hein Van De Geyn on bass and Arnoud Gerritse on drums. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "A Child Is Born", "Chelsea Bridge", "Spring Fever", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

Other tracks include "Buzzy", "Shaw Nuff", "Omicron", "Yesterdays", and "No Problem". Tracks were previously released by Mythic Sound, but are represented here with new remastering! CD
