✨✧ Lester YoungLester Young With The Oscar Peterson Trio (aka President Plays With The Oscar Peterson Trio) ... CD
Verve/Universal, 1952. Used ... $2.99
Lester Young joins the Oscar Peterson trio – and the result is a classic meeting of the minds from early 50s Verve! Young's tone is tremendous throughout – that sharp-yet-cool style that had such a big influence on other 50s players, and which gets some great support here from Peterson's group, which also features guest guitar from Barney Kessel. Oscar's piano lines are a bit more forceful than usual – possibly because of the presence of Prez – and titles include "I Can't Get Started", "Ad Lib Blues", "Just You Just Me", "Two To Tango", "I'm Confessin", "There Will Never Be Another You", and "Almost Like Being In Love". CD
(1997 Verve Master Edition.)

Verve, 1952/1956. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A pairing of 2 mid-50s sides by Lester Young for Verve – one album recorded with Teddy Wilson on piano, the other with Oscar Peterson – hence the title! The Peterson session was recorded earlier, in 1952, with Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and JC Heard on drums – with titles that include "Ad Lib Blues", "Star Dust", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "There Will Never Ever Be Another You", "I'm Confessin", and "These Foolish Things". Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Early Verve work from Lester Young – recorded in a setting that features 2 different groups: one with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel, and JC Heard; the other with John Lewis, Joe Schulman, and Bill Clark. The sound is mellow and soulful throughout – a perfect summation of Young's small-group genius, recorded in the easygoing Norman Granz style that was so groundbreaking at the time. Titles include "Pete's Cafe", "Count Every Star", "Stardust", "I'm Confessin", "These Foolish Things", and "Lester Swings". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousNorman Granz Jam Session – Vol 1 ... LP
Verve, 1952. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The first album to carry the Jazz At The Philharmonic formula into the studio – and a record that virtually coined the term "jam session" for 50s jazz! Norman Granz repeats the style he'd done so well in a live setting – and brings together a host of all-star players in a very relaxed, open environment – one that gives them all plenty of space to open up and hit some nice long solos. Players include Charlie Parker, Johnny Hodges, and Benny Carter in a three-alto frontline, plus Flip Phillips and Ben Webster on tenor, Barney Kessel on guitar, Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and JC Heard on drums. Side one features the original "Jam Blues", and side two features a "Ballad Medley", with each solo star taking one of the tunes in the set. LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinStaccato ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great lost crime jazz soundtrack – penned by Elmer Bernstein in the style of some of his best work from the 50s! There's a real Man With The Golden Arm feel here – as the orchestra rises and falls in a mode matching the Staccato title – and solos break out with a fluid and brazen sort of feel – plenty of jazz to show the west coast origin of the recording! Players include Don Fagerquist and Pete Candoli on trumpets, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash and Dave Pell on saxes, John Williams on piano, and Barney Kessell on guitar. The show itself is pretty darn cool – and starred a young John Cassavetes as detective Johnny Staccato – a role that supposedly gave Cassavetes enough money to shoot the film Shadows in his free time! Great all the way through – with tracks that include "Staccato's Theme", "Thinking Of Baby", "Poi & Juice", "Deadly Game", "Night Mood", "Jazz At Waldo's", "Like Having Fun", and "MacDougal Street Special". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has a split top seam, half split bottom seam, surface wear & aging, name in pen on both sides.)

✨✧ Benny CarterAdditions To Further Definitions ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great example of the cool, classy swing that Benny Carter hit in the 1960s – a groove that was more regularly brought to backings for standout singers of the time, but which also works beautifully here in an instrumental mode! Carter's alto sax is at the top of the charts, but the album's almost more of an ensemble effort overall – with great reed work from Bud Shank on alto, Teddy Edwards and Bill Perkins on tenor, Bill Hood on baritone sax, Don Abney on piano, Barney Kessell and Mundell Lowe on guitar – all coming together as kind of a mini-large ensemble – never that big in the number of players, but grooving with a great sense of poise, class, and soul. There's a number of originals written by Carter, including "Doozy", "Prohibido", "Come On Back", "Rock Bottom", "We Were In Love", and "Titmouse" CD
(Out of print sealed 2015 pressing, includes obi.)

✨✧ Buddy DeFrancoWholly Cats – The Complete Plays Benny Goodman & Artie Shaw Sessions Vol 1 ... CD
Verve/Lonehill (Spain), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
Buddy DeFranco plays tunes associated with Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw – but in a completely different way than before – with a wider-open swing for the 50s! The work here is all small combo, not big band – and there's a free-flowing groove that's totally great – a sound that carries echoes of the earlier years, but which comes across with that modern inflection to swing that made Buddy's years at Verve so great. Few players could come up with a balance of modes as great as this – and on the 2 sessions in the set, DeFranco's clarinet is caught alongside trumpet from either Don Fagerquist or Ray Linn, tenor from Georgie Auld, vibes from Victor Feldman, piano from Paul Smith or Carl Perkins, guitar from Barney Kessell or Howard Roberts, bass from Leroy Vinnegar or Joe Mondragon, and drums from Stan Levey or Milt Holland. First volume features 14 titles that include "Benny's Bugle", "A Smooth One", "Air Mail Special", "My Blue Heaven", "Seven Come Eleven", "Cross Your Heart", "Frenesi", "Indian Love Call", "Summit Ridge Drive", and "Stardust".
