✨✧ Max Romeo & The UpsettersWar Ina Babylon ... LP
Island/4 Men With Beards, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stone 70s classic in the Island Records catalog – proof that although the label was scoring big with some of their superstar acts, they still had a great ear out for groundbreaking reggae material! The mighty Max Romeo works here with Lee Scratch Perry in the studio – who gives him fantastic support, at a level that opens up really righteous currents in his music – a fantastic blend of the roots reggae spirit of Romeo and the studio genius of Perry! Romeo's soulful inflections matched perfectly to the dark, swampy Black Ark grooves – on titles that include "War Ina Babylon", "Chase The Devil", "Stealin'", "One Step Forward", "Smile Out Of Style", "Uptown Babies", "Tan And See", "Smokey Room", and "Norman". AswadAswad (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Island (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 32.99
A strong debut effort from one of the finer British roots acts – the mighty Aswad, a group who were big on the UK shores, but never got the same sort of international circulation as their peers Steel Pulse! Like many UK groups of the time, Aswad are nicely self-contained, different than the producer-driven aesthetic of Jamaican music – playing and writing their own material, and really coming across with a unified vibe as a result! Vocals and instrumentation are excellent throughout – and titles include "Can't Stand The Pressure", "Ethiopian Rhapsody", "I A Rebel Soul", "Natural Progression", "Red Up" "Ire Woman", and "Back To Africa". Features two bonus tracks – "Three Babylon", and "Three Babylon (dub mix)". LP, Vinyl record album

Bad BrainsBad Brains ... LP
Roir/ORG, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A hell of a record from one of the key groups who put the "hard" in the American hardcore scene – and a record that's so blisteringly intense, we still sometimes have to check to make sure we've got it on the right speed! Although Bad Brains may fly the flag of the Rastas, and definitely claim a reggae influence – the record manages to both blow away the work of the LA scene with its full-on hardcore tracks, and the UK scene with the group's few reggae-styled numbers. The original was only issued as a cassette, but that hasn't stopped it from being one of the key punk records of the time – and titles include "Sail On", "Don't Need It", "Attitude", "The Regulator", "Banned In DC", "Jah Calling", "Supertouch/Shitfit", "Leaving Babylon", "Fearless Vampire Killers", "I", "Big Take Over", "Pay To Cum", "Right Brigade", "I Luv I Jah", and "Intro". Kofi FlexxxFlowers In The Dark ... LP
Native Rebel (UK), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 46.99
A real genre-defying record from the contemporary London scene – a set produced by Shabaka Hutchings, and done with that post-jazz vibe that's really been creeping into his music in recent years! There's a very strong hip hop component to the record at times – thanks to key appearances from Billy Woods, Elucid, Anthony Joseph, and others – but the album also has an instrumental focus at the core, with work from Alex Hawkins on piano, Ross Harris on reeds, Daisy George on bass, and Jas Kayser on drums – players who work with lots of production and processing, so that their contributions are often abstracted into part of a richer, darker whole. Kofi Flexx is less of an artist than a process, as described in the notes – and that process is very strongly at work here – on titles that include "It Was All A Dream", "Apothecary", "Increase Awareness", "Aim", "Fire", "Babylon Dun Topple", "Flowers In The Dark", "By Now", and "Show Me". ✨✧ King TubbyExplosive Dub ... LP
Clocktower, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 18.98
If you're looking for a definition of dub, this album may well be it – and it's clear proof why Tubby could proudly wear the crown of a King! The set's beautifully bassy and muddy all the way through – a heady brew of bottom-level sounds – all layered wonderfully with lots and lots of echo – light guitar, bass, and drums tripping along with a sound that's as powerful today as it was back in the 70s! All tracks are instrumentals, and this LP version features 15 tracks in all – with cuts that include "Babylon Dub", "Send Me Dub", "In Love Dub", "Perfidia Dub", and "Soundtrack Dub". Fred LocksBlack Star Liner ... LP
Vulcan/VP, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
A mighty righteous set of roots material – but maybe that's no surprise, given that Fred Locks titled the album after the shipping line started by Marcus Garvey to help African-Americans get back to the homeland! On vocals, Fred's got an approach that's every bit in spirit with his rasta persona – lots of message in the music, but often delivered in a way that's nicely subtle, and partly personal – so that the politics come in alongside easygoing grooves, which maybe makes them even more powerful overall. All material is original, penned by Locks – and titles include "Wolf Wolf", "True Rastaman", "Don't Let Babylon Use You", "Vision Of Redemption", "Son Of The Almighty", and "Black Star Liners". SojournersBlack People ... LP
Hornin Sounds (France), 1991. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99
A Nigerian group, but one who work in the best roots reggae modes of previous years in Kingston – recording here with a laidback vibe that really creates a sense of intimacy that's very different than much work of this time coming out in the 90s! Vocals are traded back and forth between Blackwell Jones and Delleo Freeman – and there's a gently stepping groove to the record that never pushes too hard, nor tries for any sort of too-commercial modes. The set's features six tracks in all – "Babylon Fall", "Black People", "Psalm 23", "African Children", "Dreadful Look", and "Wet My Whistle". LP, Vinyl record album

Sons Of KemetBurn ... LP
Naim/Native Rebel (UK), 2013. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $29.99 46.99
The very first album from Sons Of Kemet – and a set that already has the group burning hard, at the level that have made them one of the key forces on the brilliant British jazz scene over the past decade or so! The mighty Shabaka Hutchings is fantastic on both tenor and clarinet – and the group has a unique two-drum lineup, with work from Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford, who provide these great criss-crossing rhythms – while the tuba of Oren Marshall moves between both work as a bass-like instrument, and as a painter of deeper tones on the set! The blend of elements is wonderful – and titles include "Song For Galeano", "Beware", "Inner Babylon", "All Will Surely Burn", "The Godfather", "Rivers Of Babylon", and "The Junglist". Sounds Of The City ExperienceSounds Of The City Experience ... LP
Tiger Lily/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 39.99
Pure genius from this hardly-heard group – a really wonderful little record that mixes soul and funk with some slight Latin touches as well – all in a blend that's as incredible as the record is rare! The group have this really warm vibe on the vocal numbers – a mix of female lead and chorus bits that's not unlike Voices Of East Harlem, and equally righteous too. But there's also some instrumental bits that are even harder and heavier – almost funky descarga numbers with some really jamming instrumentation, including some fuzzy vibes at one point that almost recall Stark Reality. Titles include "Getting It Down", "Through No Fault Of Our Own", "It's Wonderful Baby/Gina", "Come On And Stay With Me", "Stuff N' Thing", 'Keep On Keepin' On", "Babylon", "Reality", "Judgement Day", and "My People". Sylford WalkerLamb's Bread ... LP
17 North Parade, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
One of the deepest records of the roots reggae generation – a set that was so far ahead of its time, it never saw release until a decade after it was recorded! Sylford Walker has this very powerful way of putting over his words – part singing, part chanting – and often set to rhythms that are maybe a bit grittier than the usual Kingston studio modes of the late 70s – especially the percussion, which can have a very raw vibe alongside the basslines. Horns are nice and stark, too – and the whole thing almost feels as if someone took a trip back to the rocksteady years of recording, to put together a roots-oriented album. Glen L Brown produced and arranged – and titles include "Chant Down Babylon", "Lamb's Bread", "My Father's Homeland", "Eternal Day", and "Deuteronomy". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCries From The Youth – King Jammy Productions ... LP
King Jammys/VP, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $24.99 27.99
Righteous roots reggae from the digital generation – a whole host of tracks produced by the legendary King Jammy – a force who was really able to keep the spiritual fires of the 70s burning well into the following decade! The selection of cuts here is great – and if anything, the crispness of the production seems to bring out the message in the music even more – really emphasizing the power of the lyrics, in a mix of work by 70s artists still working at a very relevant level, alongside some of the up-and-comers that Jammy was so good at searching out! Titles include "Storm Is Coming" by Junior Delgado, "Why Should I" by Admiral Tibet, "Got To Be Strong" by Pad Anthony, "Up Full One" by Dennis Brown, "Only The Poor Man Feel It" by Kentucky, "World Inflation" by Junior Murvin, "Victim Of Babylon" by Admiral Tibet, "Cry For The Youths" by Wackad, "Stop The Violence" by Junior Delgado, and "Chain Grabber" by Johnny Osbourne. VariousStudio One Roots Vol 2 (green vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Soul Jazz/Studio One (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $37.99 39.99
A set that's heavy on roots reggae numbers, but which also maybe predates some of the more mainstream work in the field – especially some of the more easygoing tracks that were playing bit in American dorm rooms at the end of the 70s! Instead, these are cuts from a scene where the message in the music was plenty crucial, especially amidst the early 70s turmoil in Jamaica – where Studio One was close to the streets, and able to capture the moment with the same sort of brilliance and sharpness they brought to earlier generations of rocksteady and ska! The instrumentation is great, as some of the older players evolve into more spiritual modes – and titles include "Jah Righteous Plan" by Willie Williams, "Run Babylon" by Larry Marshall, "Babylon Rock" by Vin Gordon, "Behold The Land" by Joseph Hill, "Tenor On Call" by Tommy McCook, "Sun Is Shining" by Winston Matthews, "Satta" by Cedric Im Brooks, "Message Of Old" by Ken Boothe & Joe Higgs, "Sleeping Trees" by The Saints, and "Small Garden" by Zoot Sims. ✨✧ Steely DanGaucho ... LP
MCA, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last album in the classic run of Steely Dan – the final taste we'd have of the group until their surprising revival in the 90s! Gaucho picks up beautifully where Aja left off – warmly produced with a deep undercurrent of jazz, but perhaps a bit more down to earth feel at times too – not in the music, which is still up there in the heavens, but in some of the subject matter of the tunes, which almost takes us back to Royal Scam territory. Donald Fagan's vocals are wonderful throughout – a sound for which there's no referent or real description – and the balance in the instrumentation is near perfect on tunes that include "Babylon Sisters", "Hey Nineteen", "Time Out Of Mind", "My Rival", "Glamour Profession", and "Gaucho". ✨✧ VariousWhen Jah Shall Come ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wealth of rare work from Jamaican studio genius Bunny Striker Lee – unusual cuts and unreleased material – all of it a further testament to his legendary ear for a mindblowing sound! These aren't half-baked cuts, or material that deserved to fall to the cutting room floor – because the style is years ahead of its time, and put together with techniques and styles that are still pretty darn revolutionary after all these many years! Some tracks have a strong vocal presence, others are more instrumental – and in addition to Lee's famous flying cymbals technique, there's lots more going on here too – including some totally cool space age sounds. Unreleased tracks include "Bell Road Rock" by The Aggrovators, "Joe Frazier" by Tommy McCook, "Go Jah Jah Pickney" by Linval Thompson, "No Man Is An Island" by Johnny Clarke & Horace Andy, "Bunny Lee & King Tubby's Dubplate Special" by Cornell Campbell, "Life Of My Own" by The Raver, "Look How Long Nyabinghi Calling You" by Linval Thompson, "King Tubby's Vs Arrows Dubplate" by Cornell Campbell, "Jamaican Fruit Of African Roots" by Lennox Brown & Sheila Richards, "No Babylon Shall Escape In This Time" by Johnny Clarke, and "Every Knee Shall Bow" by Ronnie Davis. Potions, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Short instrumentals from drummer Harry James – produced in a way that often has a slight hip hop influence at times, but mostly in the way the other instruments are layered into the mix! Harry's drums are often live, and nicely crackling – and there's some great use of piano on the record – often acoustic, but produced with some cool effects that give it a nice wash of color, mixed with contributions from other guests like Keefe Jackson, Rob Frye, and Gerald Bailey. The tunes are short, nicely melodic, and with this crispy blend of drumbeats and sentiment. Titles include "Shaving Ahab", "Tumbleweed", "Mickey's Mantle", "Bucket Boy", "Dragon Juice", "Twenty Five Brookside", and "Crusher Of Babylon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersWelcome To Dubrock 2 ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A second set of super-rare tracks from the Bob Marley side of the universe – not material that was issued by Island Records as part of his run of hit albums in the 70s – but instead some very obscure dubs that were taken from acetates that were initially only circulated through Jamaican soundsystems back in the day! The material here is very different than the cleaned-up hits – as the tracks often mute the vocals, bring up the rhythms, and go for an echoey brilliance that must have sounded great coming out of some massive speakers in the street! You'll definitely have to turn your stereo up to 11 when playing this one – for titles that include "Black Survivor Dub", "Top Rankin Dub", "So Much Trouble Dub", "Babylon System Dub", "Ride Natty Ride Dub", and "One Drop Dub". It's been over 15 years since the last Liberation record from Talib Kweli and Madlib, and the planet's changed a lot – and maybe not for the better, which is a good reason the duo are back to serve up a heady helping of their message-oriented music! We've always thought that Talib sounds best in the company of Madlib, and this time around he's also got plenty of help – from a great leadoff spoken passage by Diani, through work from Seun Kuti, Mac Miller, Amani, Q Tip, Goapele, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jaimie Branch, and even Roy Ayers – all present as maybe a tribute to what's at the core! ✨✧ Yabby YouYabby You Sound – Dubs & Versions ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Yabby You maybe wasn't one of the first to start experimenting in the studios of Kingston – but with work like this, he was certainly one of the best – especially in the classic period covered in the collection! The Yabby You approach often has a leaner, more stripped-down approach than some of his contemporaries – with less of the overall effects on the totality of a tune, and instead a nicely focused application to just a key instrument or element – sometimes an added bit of electronics, sometimes a way of messing up a solo in the middle! The Pressure Sounds label has always been great with work in this side of the spectrum, but they really knock it out of the park here – and bring together Yabby You versions of cuts from a variety of artists – including Wayne Wade, Michael Prophet, Ranking Trevor, and Samuel Patterson – titles that include "Creation Rock Version", "Now I Know Dub", "Warrior No Tarry Yah Version", "Heads A Roll Dub", "Repatriation Rock", "Death To All Racist", "Aggression Dub", "Chanting Version", "Yabby U Sound", "Man Of The Living Dub", "Black Is Our Colour Dub", and "Babylon A Fall Dub". Sweet early 80s tracks from the legendary Bunny Striker Lee – work that shows him stepping effortlessly into the dancehall modes of the time – still a master of rhythm, and of finding the right sort of talents to add to his sound! The package features a nice mix of bigger names and up-and-coming talents – and also includes a number of unissued tracks from Bunny's archives, which fit perfectly alongside the singles in the set – music that's mostly in a late roots-into-dancehall mode, instead of some of the bigger, more commercial work that would circulate under the dancehall name a few years later. As always with Pressure Sounds, the presentation, sound quality, and notes are great – and titles include "Gun Fever" by Frankie Jones, "People Cruel (12" mix)" by Cornell Campbell & Errol Scorcher, "Lay Down Flat" by Devon Edwards, "Revolution Fighters" by Simple Simon, "Too Popular" by Trevor Castell, "Babylon No Badda Haul & Pull Me" by Devon Edwards, "A Place Called Zion" by The Paragons, "The Right Time (12" mix)" by Neville Brown & John Wayne, "Bandulo (12" mix)" by Cornell Campbell & Scientist, "Know Yourself Mankind" by The Paragons, "Lazer Beam (12" mix)" by Don Carlos & Papa Tullo, and "I Man Come Again" by Johnny Clarke. The set's a well-chosen collection of material from a range of different segments of Perry's career – impossible to sum up perfectly in a short space, but very well-conveyed here! Titles include "Tighten Up" by The Inspiration, "Return Of Django" by The Upsetters, "Words Of My Mouth" by The Gatherers, "Beat Down Babylon" by Junior Byles, "Do It Baby (7" mix)" by Susan Cadogan, "Three Blind Mice" by Max Romeo, "Bushweek Corntrash" by Bunny & Ricky, "Sufferer's Time" by The Heptones, and "Natty Pass Through Rome" by Prince Jazzbo – plus Perry tracks that include "Roast Fish & Corn Bread (Jamaican mix)", "Bucky Skank", "Stay Dread", "People Funny Boy", and "Jungle Lion (7" mix)". ✨✧ Kiyoshi SugimotoBabylonia Wind ... LP
Columbia/Lawson (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Beautiful grooves from guitarist Kiyoshi Sugimoto – working here on a set of long, stretched-out tracks that are every bit as hip as anything coming from the US in the early 70s! Sugimoto's got an inherently trippy approach to his instrument – but he works here with a nice sense of restraint – often using his wilder sounds to just start out a tune, then falling more into a rhythmic pulse as the rest of the group picks up the pace! The lineup includes tenor, piano (acoustic and electric), bass, and drums – sometimes played with a spacey feel that's almost got a bit of a Miles Davis or Herbie Hancock influence – sometimes a bit more inside, and grooving with the modal impulses of an electric set on MPS. Titles include "Mrs Darius", "Rosetta Stone", "Colsabard Hill", "Hieroglyph", and "Babylonia Wind". LP, Vinyl record album

Reprise, Late 1980s. New Copy 4LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The incredible solo start of the great Dwight Yoakam – presented here as three classic albums, along with a full record of bonus demo material and rarities too! Dwight burst on the scene with a freshness that was what country music really needed in the mid 80s – a style that both hearkened back to honky tonk greats of the past, but had also learned some of the leaner lessons of rock – yet all while not sounding anything like country rock of the previous decade either! Yoakam found a way to shake off all the nonsense that had been holding music back for years – and you'll hear the results beautifully on the classic albums inside – Guitars Cadillacs Etc, Hillbilly Deluxe, and Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room. Then, the set also features a great fourth record – So Forth & So On – with 1981 demos of tunes that include "Miner's Prayer", "I'll Be Gone", "You're The One", "This Drinkin Will Kill Me", "It Won't Hurt", and "Floyd County" – plus a duet with KD Lang on "Sin City", and the tracks "Christmas Eve With The Babylonian Cowboys" and "Long White Cadillac".
