Clarence Frogman HenryBaby Ain't That Love – Texas & Tennessee Sessions 1964 to 1974 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Loads of rare work from the great Clarence Frogman Henry – a New Orleans singer with a really unusual voice – as you might guess from his name! The set includes Henry's big hit "Ain't Got No Home" but then spins out to include a wealth of under-exposed singles from later years – titles issued on the Dial and Parrot labels, as well as nine never-issued tracks which appear here for the first time ever! As the title indicates, the style stretches past the core New Orleans groove of Clarence's roots – although that rolling rhythm is almost always in place, as it seems to really encourage Henry's vocal approach to hit its heights. Titles include "Long Lost & Worried", "Looking Back", "Cajun Honey", "You Made Me Love You", "Think It Over", "Mathilda", "You can Have Her", "Hummin A Heartache", "This Time", "That's When I Guessed", and "The Glory Of Love". CD

Columbia, 1956. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Kenyon Hopkins at his finest – informed by jazz, but scored with a bit more seriousness overall – in that late 50s style that oozes social consciousness from the very first note! The score's a lot more put together, and somewhat more restrained than the film – almost a jazz score in itself, but with fuller orchestrations overall, conducted by Ray Heindorf. Smiley Lewis plays a bit of piano on the set, and titles include "Fire & Baby Doll", "Doctor & Archie", "Baby Doll's Fright", "Ghosts", and "The Confession". LP, Vinyl record album

Scepter, 1968. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic! This is the kind of soul that we still collect vinyl for! Freddie Hughes is one of the great lost voices of the 60s, and this sparkling album of soulful tunes is a real gem! He's not the same singer as the Freddie Hughes from Chicago – and he hailed from San Francisco, a very unlikely source for such great soul music. The session was recorded with Lonnie Hewitt (Cal Tjader's funky piano player) in SF – but it's got that perfect New York Wand/Scepter "deep soul meets uptown" sound. The tracks are mostly written by Hughes or Hewitt – and they are all pretty amazing, filled with hooks that just don't quit, and some heartbreaking verses that match the work of writers like Curtis Mayfield or Garland Green. Titles include "Send My Baby Back", "He's No Good", "Tonight I'm Gonna See My Baby", and "I Gotta Keep My Bluff In". LP, Vinyl record album

Chess, 1962. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A fantastic lost harmony cut on Chess! "Lonely Baby" has a post doo wop sound that's wonderful – with Ty's vocal out in the lead on a sad lyric, while tenor blows in the background, and a group comes in on the chorus to punch things up a bit. "Gladness" has a great sound too – kind of a stepping groove that's almost in an "Elephant Walk" mode, with cool piano triplets in the background. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jackie & RoySing Baby Sing ... LP
Storyville, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". One of the greatest pop soul singles of all time! Even though we hear it lots of times on oldies stations, we still get a thrill from the great raw sound of "But It's Alright" – especially the great choppy guitar bit on the intro! Plus, this original Calla pressing of the track also features an amazing b-side – the hard storming "Boogaloo Baby", which is an incredible Northern Soul track with a groove that just won't quit! Pounding piano, great crowd sounds on the chorus, and a runaway groove that never stops! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Johnnie Spence is still on deck to arrange – and titles include "Rainin In My Heart", "You Make Me Smile", "Which Way Home", "Sing For The Good Times", and a sweet funky take on "Right Place Wrong Time", with some great keyboards in the mix! Romark/Kent (UK), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gem of a cut from Ty Karim – one of those singers who should have been huge, especially with a vocal presentation like this! Ty manages to soar on the upbeat groove, but has a special sort of crackle that really sends the lyric home – proud and fragile at the same time, in a way that's very unique! That quality also comes through in "All At Once" – a tune with a cool stepping sort of groove, which pushes Karim's vocal range even more as the tune overflows with soulful power! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Ty KarimWear Your Natural Baby (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Ty Karim – an LA singer from the 60s, just waiting to be rediscovered! Ty might not be the biggest name in California soul, but she's a hell of a great talent here – starting out in the 60s with upbeat Northern Soul groovers – then moving into the 70s with material that's even deeper, and a bit more sophisticated – laidback numbers that really show a maturation in style, and which are filled with wonderful twists and turns! Ty's vocals have a burning quality that's quite surprising, given her kittenish look on the cover – and as the themes get hotter, her singing gets even more righteous – making the whole package a really wonderful journey in soul. And although most of these numbers were issued (or recorded, but unissued) by tiny indie labels, they often have a very full, spacious approach to production – one that's really trying to hit the heights of Detroit or New York at the time. A good number of these cuts weren't issued at the time, and together with the rare singles, they really go a long way towards filling in the gaps in Ty's too-short career on record. Titles include "Lighten Up Baby", "Help Me Get That Feeling Back Again", "Only A Fool", "All At Once", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", "Wear Your Natural Baby", and "Don't Make Me Do Wrong". ✨✧ Lou LevyLou Levy Plays Baby Grand Jazz ... LP
Jubilee, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Given that a busty babe is leaning into the left side of the piano keyboard on the cover, we'd almost expect Lou Levy to focus mostly on the lighter notes on the right – but instead, he really opens up with some great deep notes on the cover, and takes the album far past anything you might expect! Levy's a really subtle player, one who never overstates his obvious ear for modern tones and musical elements – but he's really got a way of bringing them into his music in ways you wouldn't expect – either in the way he shapes a note on the mellower cuts, or comes up with a groove on the more lively ones. There's none of the flowery sounds you might expect from the "baby grand" title – and instead, Lou is in very comfortable territory – working in trio format with the great Max Bennett on bass, and drummer Gus Johnson – on titles that include "Little Girl", "Undecided", "The Gypsy", "Sunday Kind Of Love", "I've Found A New Baby", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". ✨✧ Barbara LewisBaby, I'm Yours ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Near-perfect work from Barbara Lewis – one of our favorite female talents of the 60s – and an artist whose blend of soul and sophistication went onto influence a huge generation of singers in years to come! The album's a key collaboration with Detroit producer Ollie McLaughlin – who keeps things in a different mode from the usual Motor City style – balancing out the rhythms a bit more, going for some great mellow and midtempo numbers that really help unlock the best qualities in Barbara's amazing voice! She's got a style that's high, yet never "little girl" – as might be said of some of her contemporaries – and this approach is heard to great effect on the album's two classics "Baby I'm Yours" and "Hello Stranger". But like all McLaughlin work of the time, the whole thing's wonderful – not a bit of filler at all – and other cuts include "Snap Your Fingers", "Someday We're Gonna Be Lovers Again", "My Heart Went Do Da Dat", "Come Home", and "Think A Little Sugar". A classic bit of funky guitar by Harvey Mandel – similar to some of Dennis Coffey's early work in that it's got full on guitar power, very much inspired by heavy rock, filtered through an approach that's also got plenty of funk in it! The killer track here is the classic "Baby Batter" – a great cut that starts with a hard funky break, and which rips out guitar-wise, jamming all the way through. The whole album's pretty tasty, though – and other tracks include "El Stinger", "Hank The Ripper", and "Morton Grove Mama". Sunset Blvd, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
Crucial cuts in the development of New Orleans soul – served up here by a singer who was instrumental in setting up the new sound of the city in the 60s! Bobby Marchan's a singer who really got his start during the soul years, unlike some of the R&B contemporaries that moved into New Orleans soul – and right from the start, he had a lean, raw style that was perfect for the new groove that was setting the world on fire – presented here on rare recordings for the Ace label in Mississippi, where he worked with Huey Smith as well – and on tracks recorded up in New York for the legendary Fire Records label of Bobby Robinson – but which were every bit as crucial as material recorded in the Crescent City to the legacy of the Nola groove! The package features 36 tracks in all, including some rare alternate takes – and titles include "Booty Green", "Snoopin & Accusin", "You're Still My Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "I Need Some One", "Yes It's Written All Over Your Face", "Things I Used To Do (parts 1 & 2)", "Look At My Heart", "Give A Helping Hand", "Chickee Wah Wah", "Quit My Job", "Loberta", "Tiddley Wink", "Rockin Behind The Iron Curtain", "I'll Never Let You Go", "Little Girl Of Mine", and "Hush Your Mouth". Pretty Baby is a great album – with orchestrations and choral backing by Gus Levene, on a set of older standards brought up to date by Dino. Titles on that one include "Only Forever", "Maybe", "Pretty Baby", "It's Easy To Remember", and "Sleepy Time Gal" – and the record has a wonderful easy quality to it! LP, Vinyl record album

The record that forever put George McCrae on the map – and a crossover bit of Miami soul from the 70s with all the key elements of the TK sound firmly in place! George's vocals are nicely flanged out in that cool production mode that TK was using with its big acts of the time (an approach that was perfect for AM radio, by the way) – the backings of the tunes have the chugging electric rhythms shared by Timmy Thomas and other acts at the label, spiced up by a bit more warm guitar to give the record a deeper southern soul vibe. The record features a 6 minute version of George's super-huge hit "Rock Your Baby", plus a "Rock Your Baby Reprise" – and it's also got a great little version of "I Get Lifted", one of those Miami funk classics that sounds great no matter who does it! A record with a cover that has Mighty Baby looking a bit more relaxed than before – and sounding a fair bit relaxed, too – as they trade some of their more strongly-driven modes for a laidback, introspective vibe that's equally nice in its own sort of way! Roger Powell is still on drums, but he also handles some gentler percussion – and other group members shift some of the dynamism of their instrumentation towards more meditative modes – a shift you can definitely hear on the organ, saxes, and flute of Ian Whiteman – who also plays a bit of harmonium. Songs are a bit longer, with even more personal lyrics – and titles include "The Happiest Man In The Carnival", "Keep On Juggin", "Virgin Spring", "Testing The Life", and "Slipstreams". An amazing debut from Mighty Baby – a group that grew out of 60s mod rockers The Action – but who have a very different sound overall! In a way, the shift here is a more vivid step forward than some of the other British acts who slowly evolved from mod to prog – as the group work here in a freewheeling blend of guitars, drums, and some specially nice sax and organ lines – with with this swirling vibe that really moves past some of the straighter American jazz and soul elements that got them going! Ian Whiteman handles the vocals, saxes, and keyboards – and there's this soaring quality that's maybe somewhere between early Yes and some of the Brian Auger shifts at the start of the 70s – with a touch of the vocal warmth of CSNY – all held down by some great drumming from Roger Powell, in a group that also features Martin Stone on some mighty nice lead guitar. Titles include "Egyptian Tomb", "Trials Of A City", "Same Way From The Sun", "I've Been Down So Long", and "A Friend You Know But Never See". LP, Vinyl record album

2 brilliant albums from Garnet Mimms – one of the greatest soul singers of the 60s, and an artist you can never have enough of! Garnet's albums from the 60s are all great – and unlike his contemporaries, he always recorded full LPs with all great songs, a wealth of original material, and not a bit of filler. This means that the set's got 26 tracks that may well be a "best of" for Garnet – as each track sparkles as much as the next, with Garnet's roughly-hewn vocals stretching out over sweet uptown arrangements by Jerry Ragovoy and Garry Sherman. We couldn't hope for a better batch of 60s soul tunes – and titles include "Don't Change Your Heart", "Looking For You", "It's Just A Matter Of Time", "One Girl", "Baby Don't You Weep", "So Close", "Anytime You Want Me", "There Goes My Baby", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Quiet Place", "Cry To Me", "Until You Were Gone", "Anytime You Want Me", "Thinkin", and "Prove it To Me". ✨✧ MiraclesDo It Baby ... LP
Motown, 1974. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
It's the mid 70s, and The Miracles have been deserted by Smokey – but fortunately the group was extremely well trained in the harmony department, and this album's just about as good as anything they did with him on Motown! The record's got an excellent smooth harmony soul style – and reminds us a lot of some of the Philly albums coming out at the same time. Arrangements are handled by James Carmichael, Freddie Perren, and Willie Hutch – and the record's filled with slinky smooth soul grooves like "Do It Baby", "You Are Love", "What Is A Heart Good For", and "Give Me Just Another Day", one of a few great cuts on the record written by Leon Ware! Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
The a-side to this single is a solid club slammer from Jackie Moore – way different than her earlier southern soul work, and done here with a sweet Philly groove from producer Bobby Eli! The track burns and builds for a full seven minutes – really picking up steam but never going too far – and setting Jackie's vocals up as strong enough to rival any other club divas of the time! Great hook too! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Capitol, 1986. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A Capitol classic from Meli'sa Morgan – filled with sweet 80s grooves, and delivered with a style that's nicely lighter than some of her contemporaries! Morgan can still manage a nice hook when she wants, but the album's also got her working as a richer soul artist overall – eschewing the obvious chart territory of other 80s female singers, and stepping back to hit some great midtempo modes that really let her open up with amazing vocals! The mode's almost a female take on the quiet storm style at its best moments – and titles include "Now Or Never", "Lies", "Fool's Paradise", "Heart Breaking Decision", "Do You Still Love Me", and "I'll Give It When I Want It". Philips/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A super-groovy Dutch group from the end of the 60s – one who really showcase that shift on the scene from standard beat styles to much more sophisticated music! The group features Robbie van Leeuwen in the lineup, famous for his work to come in Shocking Blue – and the album does a great job of mixing together catchy, upbeat numbers with some that have larger arrangements – balanced in a very cool way, so that the whole thing never loses its groove – maybe a bit like the Bee Gees as they were stepping things up at the end of the 60s too, but with less harmony in the approach. Titles include "Wedding Of The Hundred Brides", "Illusions", "Looking In My Eyes", "Electric Baby", "Freedom", "Slow Motion", "Hey Everybody", "Chicks", "What's Your Name", "Eliza", and "It's Alright". Oh Baby is right – as the album's one of the best Blue Note albums by Hammond legend Big John Patton – a perfect mix of funky organ and burning hardbop! The tracks hare are all originals penned for the album – mostly by Patton, but also by other group members – the kind of fresh grooves that made John's organ work for Blue Note really stand out from the rest of the 60s Hammond generation – very creative stuff, with occasional modern touches, and a rhythmic conception that's not only unusual, but which also really lets the soloists stretch out on their grooves! ✨✧ Lou ReedConey Island Baby (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lou Reed's maybe a bit more subtle here than during his years with the Velvet Underground, and his earliest solo records – but he also has this new sort of maturity that really points the way forward to the years to come! Coney Island Baby further marks the continuing legacy of Lou Reed as a hell of a songwriter – able to portray human strivings and failings with a surprisingly sensitive ear – all in the kind of modes that might not hit you over the head the first time around, but which are completely compelling over the next few spins. There's always that wry little quality to Reed's vocals here – that bite that almost comes as a weary attempt to snap back at the world – and while the album's maybe not the most transgressive release of 1976, it's got a subtle power that's made it a lot more long-lasting than some of its contemporaries. Titles include "Crazy Feeling", "Charly's Girl", "A Gift", "Ooohhh Baby", "Coney Island Baby", and "She's My Best Friend". CD

Some of the greatest albums that Hammond organist Jimmy Smith issued at the start of the 60s – all records that completely cemented the role of the organ in jazz – and took the instrument out of the realm of back rooms and jukeboxes! That's not to say that the music here wouldn't play great on a jukebox, as some of the cuts here were issued by Blue Note as 45rpm singles, and went on to get a fair bit of organ play – but they're also mixed with longer cuts that really have Smith opening up on the Hammond – showing the world why his skills on the keys were so different than most that came before him! All the records here feature tight small combo backing – not the larger arrangements that Jimmy would later use at the Verve label – and the set features all albums in original artwork, in LP-styled sleeves – and includes the records Home Cookin, Crazy Baby, Midnight Special, Back At The Chicken Shack, and Softly As In A Summer Breeze! One of Jimmy's most classic albums for Blue Note – and a key example of why his solo skills on the organ surpassed most of his contemporaries! The record's got a stripped-down trio group of Jimmy, guitarist Quentin Warren, and drummer Donald Bailey – working through mostly familiar numbers, but taking them to places previously unheard of! The best example of this is the album's amazing version of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" – a classic groover that takes the old snoozer and pumps it up with a snapping rhythm, then features Jimmy really working the whole thing over with an incredible solo! A similar format's applied to numbers that include "Mack the Knife", "Night in Tunisia", "What's New", and "Makin Whoopee" – and the album soars with an easy groove that's every bit of Jimmy at his best!
