A nice little collection of Bo Diddley's earlier work for Chess – put together in the early 70s, when Bo was in his Black Gladiator phase, as pictured on the cover – but featuring the rawer, rougher grooves of his initial recordings in the late 50s and early 60s! The Bo Diddley groove hardly needs an introduction from us – and the 24 tracks on the set are a perfect illustration of his blinding mix of fast rhythms, choppy guitar, and comical vocals – a sound that made Bo's work some of the most striking R&B of the time! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 2CD box set edition is amazing – coming in a heavy-duty box with each disc in an oversized gatefold style sleeve – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. A standing room ovation in the A&M Studios – certainly the kind of reception we'd imagine Herb would get during these glory years of his career! Four rare albums from the great Moe Bandy – maybe not the biggest country star of the 70s, but one who cut a fantastic run of records like these! Bandy's got a very classic honky tonk style – down-home, blue-tinged tunes that often have Moe himself as the punching bag – with an honest look at the struggles of life and love, all served up with lean instrumentation that feels a lot more like some barroom performance than the arena-filling work of some of his superstar contemporaries! All four albums are produced by Ray Baker in a nicely understated mode – almost more 60s in style than you'd guess – with Bandy's wonderful vocals ringing out over some really well-chosen tunes, and classic instrumentation on steel guitar to echo the bluer currents in the lyrics. A fairly straight orchestral score by John Barry – written for this early 60s film that starred George Segal, Tom Courneay, and Denholm Elliott. The film's a war one, and the themes are pretty typical for that sort of thing – but they do have some nice instrumental touches that push them past the usual bag, and which show that Barry's younger writing was always a treat, no matter what the setting. Titles include "There Is A Radio In This Hut", "Just As You Were", "Grey's Day", "The Recovery Of Marlowe", "Touch & Go", and "King Rat March". LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet little Count Basie get together – one of those small group sessions from the 70s, which made some of these later years of his career such a delight! The album's nicely relaxed – in the best Pablo Records way – almost an extension of the Verve swing modes of the 50s, when players really got to open up more on their solos – but maybe with a bit more Basie bite in the groove, too! The Count's on piano – and the group features Clark Terry and Harry Edison on trumpets, Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, Budd Johnson on tenor and baritone, Freddie Green on guitar, John Clayton on bass, and Gus Johnson drums. There's a mix of styles here – some rough rocking numbers that are a bit stiff, mixed with some really amazing tunes that get at Brian Wilson's new sensitivities – tunes like "Girl Don't Tell Me", "You're So Good To Me", "Summer Means New Love", and "Let Him Run Wild" – all complicated in subtle ways, with a great sense of tension underneath. Other tracks include "Help Me Rhonda (45 single version)", "California Girls", "I'm Bugged At My Old Man", and "Amusement Parks USA". CD

Genius work from trumpeter Harry Beckett – the kind of easygoing electric work that he seemed to do better than anyone else on the British scene of the early 70s! The record's got a laidback approach that's really unique – one that pits Beckett's trumpet against guitar by Ray Russell, keyboards from Brian Miller, and additional bass, drums, and congas – the last of which are used to underscore the sound nicely. The sound shows almost no influence from the electric trumpet jazz of Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, or Freddie Hubbard – and is instead uniquely Beckett's own bag – almost always slightly funky or grooving, but never too much so – and neither too out nor too jamming, with a lanquid quality that's totally great. Titles include "No Time For Hello", "Bracelets Of Sound", "Rings Within Rings", and "Not Just Tomorrow". CD

A great little record that came out a few years ago and never got the success it deserved. The album's got a beautifully classic sound, and feels like one of the more melodic and lyrical sides from the Blue Note late 60s era – like stuff by Lee Morgan or Duke Pearson. This critically acclaimed LA combo never resorts to tricks to put over their bag, and instead, the record's filled with the kind of solid writing and playing that we'd never expect from an album of this vintage (especially one on Impulse, who seem to be making a lot of other weaker choices with jazz). The record's one we come back to quite a bit, and it's filled with loads of nice tunes like "The Core", "Double Indemnity", "An Open Letter", and "West Coastings". CD

A decade's worth of amazing music from the legendary Bobby Blue Bland – a singer who already hit his peak on these sublime early sides for Duke Records! There's never been anyone like Bobby Blue Bland – especially at this point in his career – never a straight jazz singer, and instead a vocalist who could dig deep into his roots, but find a way to forge them to a hipper, jazzier current – one that carried Bland strongly from the 50s R&B generation well into the world of 60s soul – and which still continues to make him one of the true standout artists of his generation – and one of the few that nobody else can ever even think of copying! This package is one of the best we've ever seen to focus on Bland's work of the period – with 26 tracks, and a great set of notes that really illuminate the material – a classic set of titles that include "I Pity the Fool", "Cry Cry Cry", "Back in the Same Old Bag Again", "Sometimes You Gotta Cry a Little", "These Hands", "Ain't No Telling", "Chains Of Love", "Back In The Same Old Bag Again", "That Did It", "Shoes", "Don't Cry No More", "Ain't Nothing You Can Do", "Two Steps From The Blues", "Share Your Love With Me", and "Turn On Your Love Light". More excellent early Bobby Blue Bland material, with stellar arrangements by Joe Scott that mix soul, blues, and a slight bit of jazz to create the unique style that made Bobby's work unlike that of anyone else. A sweet sweet set of electric 70s funk – recorded by Booker T during a brief, but well-needed reunion with the MGs! The sound here is quite different than Stax-era MGs – as Booker plays a range of keyboards, not just organ – and the grooves have these great jazz funk touches at the bottom – almost a CTI vibe at times, but packed with the tighter energy you'd expect from the group! Steve Cropper's guitar is great – super-fine, and razor-sharp – really helping cut a nice edge on the cuts – over bass from Donald Duck Dunn and drums from Willie Hall, who's the only new member of the group. In a way, the album feels like mid 70s efforts from Johnny Hammond or Jimmy Smith – sweetly soaring on a let-loose 70s vibe.
