✨✧ Roy Acuff & The Smoky Mountain BoysKing Of Country Music – The Complete Foundational Recordings – 1936 to 1951 (9CD & DVD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 30s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy 9CDs & DVD ... $299.99 399.99
Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Roy was one of the greatest stars of the early years – a hell of a singer, an important composer, and a tireless performer who criss-crossed the south constantly – helping the music to spread and grow, and sparking countless careers along the way! This package is the first to really do justice to these important early years of Acuff – much more so than any of the public domain packages on the market – as the whole thing's handled with the Bear Family sense of completeness – which means that the 9CD box features a whopping 226 songs, recorded for the Vocalion, Arc, and Columbia labels between 1936 and 1951 – all packaged with a massive 184 page hardcover book, filled with new biography information, session notes, an a newly-done discography – plus a fantastic amount of rare photos and illustrations. The set also features a bonus DVD, which features the 1940 Grand Ole Opry film – which includes work by Acuff and Uncle Dave Macon. The set even includes a rare 1948 instrumental album by The Smokey Mountain Boys too! CD

Jon AppletonMusic For Synclavier & Other Digital Systems ... CD
Folkways, 1978. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
Moody electronics from maestro Jon Appleton – a spare set that's quite a bit different from some of his early 70s tape experiments for Flying Dutchman! This Folkways album has Appleton doing some wonderfully weird work on the keys – mostly a synclavier, but also some other early digital systems too – but used in these really textural ways that still sound a lot like early analogue electronics! The tunes have an almost poetic feel – usually building slowly, with an Eno-like approach to sound – and titles include "Mussems Sang", "Zoetrope", "Syntrophia", and "In Deserto". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". CD

BandMusic From Big Pink (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1968. Used ... $9.99
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. CD

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. Used ... $19.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". CD

✨✧ Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (3CD set) ... CD
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 3CD ... $25.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! CD

A wonderful meeting of jazz and poetry – as the Peter Brotzmann Tentet pays tribute to the work of Kenneth Patchen – mixing readings of Patchen's material with backings from the larger group! Section one of the CD features the Brotzmann group improvising under direction from the "lightbox" of Fred Lonberg-Holm, who is also in the group on cello – and then section two features more pronounced readings of Patchen's poetry, done by Mike Pearson in a style that really recalls Patchen's own voice on record. Players include Brotzmann, Mats Gustafsson, and Ken Vandermark on a variety of saxes and reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Michael Zerang on drums. Joanna BroukHearing Music ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 17.98
Beautiful sounds from Joanna Brouk – an artist who was sometimes lost amidst the new age scene of the 80s, but one who's got a much deeper, more intellectual approach overall! True, Brouk's music does have a certain meditative spirit – but she also was a student of Terry Riley and Robert Ashley, and drank deep of the new compositional spirit of the time – especially in the work of Riley, which is often reflected here, but in a more contemplative way than his own recordings. Music sometimes features a core line on flute, opening up and unfolding slowly – and there's also some nice piano, and even a bit of conch shell and Orca sounds too. Double-length set features the usual strong Numero Group level of notes and history – and contains 22 tracks in all, some of which were only ever issued on cassette! CD

An incredible record – a real standout in Solomon Burke's career! This set features him working with arrangements that are smooth, mellow, and sexy – very much in the Barry White and Isaac Hayes mode, a style that's a perfect fit for Solomon's voice, which was warm and deep back when White and Hayes were just kids! Gene Page did some of the arrangements with Solomon, and the record's a wonderfully unified session with a mellow 70s soul feel that's just great. Titles include "Everlasting Love", "Music To Make Love By", "Midnight & You", "You & Your Baby Blues", and "Let Me Wrap My Arms Around You". CD

An excellent collection of early work by John Cage – and a set that's maybe not nearly as sweet as you'd guess from the "lollipops" in the title! The box is worth it alone for its presentation of the 25 Year Retrospective Concert – which brings together 1958 performance versions of important early works, including "Imaginary Landscape No 1", "Six Short Inventions For Seven Instruments", "First Construction In Metal", "She Is Asleep" (in quartet and duo version), "Sonatas & Interludes", "Music For Carillion No 1", "Williams Mix", and "Concert For Piano & Orchestra", which was new at the time. The package then goes on to include "Double Music" by Cage with Lou Harrison, the spoken word/piano statement "Indeterminacy" done with David Tudor, and key early readings of "Cartridge Music" and "Fontana Mix". ✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordSelf Determination Music ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Some of the best work ever recorded by bassist Paul Chambers – one of the greatest bass players in jazz! This excellent 3CD box set features the bulk of albums that Paul Chambers recorded for Blue Note as a leader, plus an earlier gem recorded for the Imperial label, and another session for the Transition label. Together, the records give an incredible picture of Chambers' work – showing why most jazz players of the 50s regarded him as one of the most important forces on his instrument, and why Chambers had some unique talents that made him one of the few bassists to regularly record albums as a leader. Players on the albums include John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Clifford Jordan, Pepper Adams, and Curtis Fuller – and the albums include Chamber's Music, Whims Of Chambers, Paul Chambers Quintet, Bass On Top, and Transition Session. 32 tracks in all! Tommy CollinsThis Is Tommy Collins/Words & Music Country Style ... CD
Capitol/Rural Routes, Mid 50s. Used ... $6.99
Two full albums from the many who was an important influence on California country giants Merle Haggard and Buck Owens! The first album is pure genius from the young Tommy Collins – an early figure on the Bakersfield scene, and an artist who almost single-handedly shaped the sound of the west coast scene with his Capitol Records material included here! Collins had a wonderful way of updating older hillbilly modes – traces of Texas and Arkansas, moved over to postwar Cali – where things got tightened up, became a bit more confident, and were given a razor-sharp sound by the excellent Capitol production. Every tune here is a classic – and many have a sense of double-entendre that rivals the hippest R&B work of the period, but with a very different sound overall – on titles that include "You Better Not Do That", "How Do I Say Goodbye", "It Tickles", "You Gotta Have A License", "Smooth Sailin", and "Whatcha Gonna Do Now". Words & Music Country Style features the wit, wisdom, and wild twang of the great Tommy Collins – brought together in a killer collection of early work for Capitol! The music here is the ultimate peak of the hillbilly generation – not the codified country of the Nashville scene to come, but much more rough-edged and wooley – with more than a few elements that could influence the sound of rock and roll as well! Titles include "The Feet Of The Traveler", "How Do I Say Goodbye", "Think It Over Boys", "Are You Ready To Go", and "All Of The Monkeys Ain't In The Zoo". CD

Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Asch/Folkways, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
One of the darkest field recordings on the Folkways label – a set of Ichicha musicmusic traditionally performed during the wake of a funeral – actually recorded during a funeral! Some of the songs are just Ediigwu, but the others are call and response with a full chorus and the ajigo, or kettle drum and the okanga, a two membrane drum, carried slung over a shoulder – and given the setting of the record, there's a very strong undercurrent of sadness in most of the music – not faked or forced in the studio, but genuinely felt emotion at the event. Tracks include "Alekwu Chants", "Onugbu & Oko", "Journey To Igbira", and more. CD

Equistar, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99
A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". CD

Jimmy GiuffreMusic For People, Birds, Butterflies & Mosquitoes ... CD
Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... About July 8, 2020
Overlooked 70s work from Jimmy Giuffre – a hip trio session that has all the free elements of his earlier recordings, but possibly an even greater focus on tone! Jimmy plays a range of reeds here – tenor, clarinet, and flute – and he works with bass and drum accompaniment, but often in a really gentle way that allows his own solo energy to dictate the tunes – coming out in space that's boldly soulful on the tenor, yet more fragile and intimate on the flute – kind of a cross between more expressive avant work and some of the more spiritual tones of the time. The tenor tunes are especially great – kind of opening a new chapter for Giuffre's career – and titles include "The Bird", "Mosquito Dance", "The Chanting", "The Butterfly", "Dervish", "Phoenix", and "Night Dance". Iro Haarla, Ulf Krokfors, & Barry AltschulAround Again – The Music Of Carla Bley ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley brought to jazz is perfectly captured here – and very evenly balanced between the piano of Iro Haarla, the bass of Ulf Krokfors, and drums of Barry Altschul – the last of whom is maybe more part of Bley's generation, but somehow feels even more youthful here! Haarla's got maybe a sharper approach on the piano than some of Bley's interpreters in years past – but also knows when to lay back and let the bass and drums emerge a bit more too – on titles that include "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Batterie", "King Korn", "Intermission Music", "Around Again", "Start", and "Jesus Maria". ✨✧ Charlie HadenLiberation Music Orchestra ... CD
Impulse, 1969. Used ... $6.99
One of the most beautiful albums that Charlie Haden ever recorded – and if he only ever appeared on one record in his life, we'd still love him tremendously for this one! The album has a feel that's very much in keeping with both the "liberation" and "orchestra" in the title – "liberation", in that the music is filled with inspiration from South American sources, and has a strongly political feel at times; and "orchestra" because the group here is somewhat large, and filled with a tremendous array of expressive players – including Gato Barbieri on tenor, Dewey Redman on alto and tenor, Don Cherry on cornet and flutes, Michael Mantler on trumpet, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Robert Northern on French horn, Paul Motian and Andrew Cyrille on percussion, Carla Bley on piano, and Perry Robinson on clarinet. Haden leads these disparate talents through a set of tremendously focused music – filled with as many ideas as it is with a sense of humanity and soul – all to brilliantly point the way forward for the new sound of Impulse Records in the years after Coltrane's death! Titles include the classic "Song For Che", plus Ornette's "War Orphans", Carla Bley's "The Interlude", and "Song Of The United Front", by Hans Eisler, and with words by Brecht! CD

A lost chapter in the all too short history of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra – an album recorded shortly after the group's better-known album for ECM in the 80s! Like other Liberation Music outings, Carla Bley is a very strong presence on this set – penning original tunes for the album, handling arrangements, and sharing Charlie Haden's love of rhythms and inspirations from Latin and African sources – inspirations that are brought in subtly, and shaped to fit the overall spirit of the group. Players include Tom Harrell, Ken McIntyre, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman, and Ray Anderson – and titles include "Dream Keeper", "Rabo De Nube", "Nkosi Sikelel'I Afrika", and "Sandino". CD

Tubby HayesInterlude For Music (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1965. Used ... $19.99
Beautifully-recorded live material from tenor giant Tubby Hayes – a series of performances done for the BBC in 1965, and presented here with superb sound that really gets at the amazing power of Tubby's solos! The album's a bit different than some other 60s live work by Hayes – in that it doesn't feature some of the drawn-out tracks of the Ronnie Scotts or other concert performances – and instead has Tubby blowing with that tight, compact style he was using a few years before on record – but still with a hell of a lot of imagination packed into a very short solo space! The core group features Gordon Beck on piano, Jeff Clyne on bass, and Johnny Butts on drums – and Tubby plays tenor, vibes, and flute – with a different focus on each instrument during the course of the three broadcasts that make up the collection. Titles include "A Taste Of Honey", "Speak Low", "The Song Is You", "Alone Together", "In The Night", "Time After Time", "Detour Ahead", "Who Can I Turn To", and "I Never Know When To Say When". CD

Fact Of Being, 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
Dreamy sounds from Iasos – an early proponent of the world of new age music, but one that's far hipper than the bigger-label acts to come in the 80s! This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. The album features extended versions of "The Angels Of Comfort" and "Angel Play – each around the 30 minute mark! CD

Fact Of Being, 1975. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
Bizarre home made electronics from the enigmatic Iasos – an artist who later went onto a bit of fame in the new age, but who's working here in a trippier, spacier, almost psychedelic mode! The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and which could work well as some of the shorter link tracks on an early 70s Impulse album. Tunes are often relatively short, and titles include "Libra Sunrise", "Lueena Coast", "Lagoon Night", "Siren Shallows", "Aries", "Angel Play", "The Bubble Massage", and "Maha-Splendor". CD

Lamont JohnsonMusic Of The Sun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99
A soaring solo moment for Lamont Johnson – the bassist whose work was a big part of the Brainstorm ensemble at their start – and who really makes some great magic here on his own! It's clear from the set that Johnson was one of the more spiritual members of Brainstorm – as the approach here, while still heavy on funk and soul, also has some deeper touches too – core ideas from Johnson that are expanded strongly by arranger Jerry Peters, whose direction of the project stands as one of his best studio moments of the time! The team of Peters and Johnson really come up with a set that pushes past the usual grooves of the time – with some elements that recall the jazzier spiritual elements from folks like Eddie Russ or Lonnie Liston Smith, mixed with more of the focus on the groove that Johnson's bass brought to Brainstorm. There's lots of great guests on the record, too – including Norma Jean Bell on saxes, Renae Williams on vocals, Ronnie Foster on keyboards, Lee Ritenour on guitar, and Randall Jacobs on the mighty cool Roland Space Echoplex guitar. Titles include "Sister Fine", "Hey Girl", "Music Of The Sun", "This Must Be Heaven", and "Yours Truly Discreetly". CD features bonus tracks that include "Sister Fine (12" mix)", "Rhunba", "Masta Luva", and "Hey Girl (7" edit)". CD

MPS (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $22.99
Bold music, indeed – a tremendous blend of avant garde jazz and groovier moments from pianist Joachim Kuhn! The style is a great illustration of the two key poles of the MPS label at the end of the 60s – the company's willingness to take a chance on freer jazz artists, but also its ability to sometimes focus those artists in a bit more, and get them to record tunes with a strong rhythmic pulse and nice sense of groove. Kuhn's working here not only on acoustic piano, but also alto sax, gong, antelope horn, and more – and other members of the group include JF Jenny-Clarke on bass and cello, Jacques Thollot on percussion, and Stu Martin on drums and bells! Titles include the groover "Depression & Illusion", plus "Third World War", "Message From Upstairs", "The Child Out There Somewhere", "Vampires Castle", and "My Friend The Yogi". CD

Gammon/Bar None, Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
A very strange little album – one of those records that was created without any interest in an audience – but which has gone on to become the stuff of legend over time! The set features vocal performances by a group of rural school students recorded in the mid 70s – often performing alongside just a bit of sad-tinged piano or guitar, as they deliver these surprisingly compelling versions of songs from their generation – tunes by David Bowie, Wings, The Beach Boys, and others – in versions that are completely different than the originals. The whole thing's about as strange as you can imagine – and has had a huge amount of attention and followers over the years. Ubiquity, 2004. Used ... $2.99
Heavy funk from Shawn Lee – known best in recent years for his stunning production work, but really stepping out here as a funky artist in his own right! Shawn's been sneaking out some killer singles over the past few years, but this set's his first really full funky outing – a blistering array of tracks that pays tribute to the Sound Library sound of DeWolfe, KPM, and other classic labels from the 60s and 70s. Most tracks are short and thematic, with sweet funky elements that include electric sitar, fuzzed-up guitar, echoey percussion, snapping drum breaks, and burning organ and keyboard bits! The whole thing comes across extremely well – very very classic-sounding, without any gimmicks or tricks – just a cold, stone, simple batch of funk tracks, served up with perfect production! Titles include "Sexy Beast", "Bollywood", "Italian Stallion", "King Conga", "Drum Monkey", "Spytown", "El Duce", "Organ Grinder", "Scorpion", "Sammy's Theme", and "Boss Bossa". CD

17 North Parade, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
A brilliant tribute to the youthful talents of Barrington Levy – a set of sweetly soulful numbers that were mostly recorded when Levy was in his late teens! The package is overstuffed with goodness from these key Levy years – music that often moves through the groove with a really laidback vocal, yet still has this sharp bite underneath – that special mix that always made Barrington so great. And although young here, there's still a depth to his vocals that few other older acts can touch – a heartfelt, sometimes heartbreaking quality that really comes through. CD features a whopping 40 tracks in all – with titles that include "She Rob & Gorn", "Poor Man Style", "Rubber Man", "My Woman", "21 Girls Salute", "Collie Weed", "Bounty Hunter", "Walk 2000 Miles", "Mini Bus", "Black Hen Chicken", "Look Youthman", and "Wedding Ring". ✨✧ Taj MahalSing A Happy Song – The Warner Brothers Recordings (Music Fuh Ya/Brothers/Evolution/live tracks) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1976/1977. New Copy 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A trio of albums from Taj Mahal – and some unreleased live tracks as well! First up is Music Fuh Yah – a sweetly soulful set that has Taj Mahal really trying on some new flavors – yet still keeping things strongly in the bluesy territory of his roots! In addition to the lead vocals and lots of acoustic guitar, the set also features key contributions from Rudy Costa on a range of saxes, plus flute and kalimba too – plus other unusual elements that include steel drums, timbales, and banjo – all of which inflect different moments with freshly playful sounds, and a surprisingly Caribbean vibe at times. Titles include "You Got It", "Sailin", "Truck Driver's Two Step", "Curry", and "The Four Mills Brothers". Brothers is one of the better records that Taj Mahal cut during in the later 70s – probably because it was a soundtrack, and pushed the groove into some interesting places – with Taj's gruff vocals working over some Caribbean rhythms and modern blues, and more smoothed out moments! The latter moments actually creep near or even cross over the line into kind of a fusiony soul feel, with the tightly thumping electric bass and rolling sax, but Taj keeps the overall vibe as uncommonly diverse as his other records for Columbia. Tracks include "Malcolm's Song", "David & Angela", "Night Rider", "Brother's Doin Time", "Free The Brothers", "Love Theme In The Key Of D", and "Funky Butt". Evolution is a well-titled set – given that the record really shows an evolution in the style of Taj Mahal! Some cuts are still in an older bluesy mode, but a few others feature some great backings from Leon Pendarvis – who creates this fuller, soaring sort of style that takes off with plenty of power! The approach is a great way to use Taj's vocals in a richer 70s soul setting – and those cuts are balanced by some more stripped-down numbers that include a few that follow in the recent Mahal use of steel drums. Titles include "Sing A Happy Song", "Lowdown Showdown", "Why You Do Me This Way", "Highnite", and "Salsa De Laventille". 2CD set also features 7 bonus live tracks recorded in Chicago in 1977 – but not issued at the time! Joseph MalikAquarius Songs – Directions In Music By David Donnelly ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... $5.99
Joseph Malik really knocks us out with this one – and takes off with a sound that's well deserving of the "directions in music" tag in the title! At its core, the record has a similar feel to the spacey soul of Joseph's first set for Compost – lots of warm songwriting with slight folksy touches – in a Terry Callier-inspired mode that stakes out new space for the 21st century. But the sound here is also quite different – supported by arrangements and production by David Donnelly – who provides just the right blend of modes to push Malik's music boldly forward – using light keys, snapping rhythms, and a really rich tapestry of sound to fill up the spaces, and give the album a really majestic sound! The set's one of the strongest full albums we've heard from Compost in a while – and it's likely to keep Malik at the top of our play pile for a long time to come! Titles include "Nebula", "Silent Fools", "Aquarius Song", "Diablo", "Dream Dancer", "Believe & See", "Mistress Moonlight", and "Casualties Of War". CD
