✨✧ Atlantic StarrYours Forever ... LP
A&M, 1983. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groovy little classic from Atlantic Starr – and a great example of the group's wonderfully catchy way of hitting a groove! The music's never pop, but has some captivating hooks all the way through – sweet little bits mixed in with the funky soul approach of the ensemble – made even better by the great way the vocals get traded back and forth! There's a careful approach to the whole set – a way of putting things together with a good degree of class – and definitely avoiding most of the cliches that would make a similar project sound a lot more clunky. Great stuff throughout – and titles include "Who Could Love You Better", "Second To None", "Touch A Four Leaf Clover", "Tryin", and "Island Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the first MJQ albums on Atlantic – and a bit fresher than some of their later outings, when it seemed like they were churning records out at the drop of a hat! Titles include an extended medley of standards, all given the MJQ touch – plus the drum-heavy "La Ronde", and the tracks "Baden Baden", "Bag's Groove", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousThis Is Soul (Atlantic) (UK pressing) ... LP
Atlantic (UK), Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A killer collection of deep soul from the Atlantic Records catalog – including a few tunes that they'd snatched from Stax in the early days of the label! The package here is one that was issued for overseas markets in the 60s – partly as a calling card for the new genius of Atlantic, and maybe also as a demonstration of the style of "soul" – which was a pretty new musical term at that point! Titles include "Land Of A Thousand Dances" by Wilson Pickett, "BABY" by Carla Thomas, "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley, "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)" by Otis Redding, "I Got Everything I Need" by Sam & Dave, "What Is Soul" by Ben E King, "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge, "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett, "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd, "Keep Looking" by Solomon Burke, "I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You" by Aretha Franklin, and "Warm & Tender Love" by Percy Sledge. ✨✧ Aleem featuring Leroy BurgessShock ... LP
Atlantic, 1987. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The great Leroy Burgess is still going strong on this later album from Aleem – shifting his sound to hit more of an 80s street soul groove, but one that's also got the tighter elements you'd expect from a major label set at the time! Burgess has a voice that's schooled in disco and indie club, but which turns out to be even better for chunkier, more synopated styles – provided by the heavier beats here, at a level that almost makes the set a precursor to later new jack modes. Titles include "Searchin", "Love Shock", "Jackpot", "Sweet Treat", "Lonely Tears", "Burn It Up", and "Genuine Love Affair". LP, Vinyl record album

Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $14.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Black HeatKeep On Runnin' ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good ... $13.99
The third album from Black Heat – and quite possibly the funkiest of the bunch – thanks to an even tighter sound than before, and lots of emphasis on the bottom of the groove! The group's got a few more members than before, but their sound is somehow even leaner – a really tight approach to ensemble funk that really sits proudly with the best of the Kool & The Gang/Fatback generation – with some sweet Afro-inspired touches as well! The organ on the set is especially nice – played by Johnell Grey, and bubbling up nicely underneath the horns – and the drums from Esco Cromer have a wicked kick too, even on some of the album's mellower cuts. Titles include the killer break cut "Zimba Ku", plus "Questions & Conclusions", "Love", "Prince Duval", "Feel Like A Child", "Keep On Runnin", and a nice funky version of "Drive My Car". ✨✧ Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie & OthersGiants Of Jazz – Recorded Live At The Victoria Theatre In London ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
This session shouldn't work, but it does – and beautifully! By all means, an album that includes Diz, Art Blakey, Monk, and Sonny Stitt playing together should be a first-rate snoozer, with hackneyed performances of common-denominator material that they can all get their hooks around – but instead, it's an amazing bit of work that has all players hitting some of their best moments of the 70's! Diz has that great deep 70's funk sound in his trumpet, Stitt's solos are razor sharp, and Blakey's drums have a good snap to them, and were recorded extremely well, despite the fact that this was a live session. All tracks are long, and the record includes great versions of "Tin Tin Deo", "Night In Tunisia", "Allen's Alley", "Blue Monk", "Woody N You", and "Tour De Force". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray's no stranger to the solo piano format – having first recorded this way in the early 60s – and his work in the style is surprisingly great, far more exploratory and open-ended than you might expect if you know his regular soul jazz work. Atlantic, 1976. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Jimmy Castor's looking mighty butch on the cover of this one – what with the leather and motorcycle in the photo – and he's bringing all that energy to play strongly on the album's heavy heavy funk tracks! The record's a great extension of the funky style that Castor first started forging at RCA – touches with plenty of Jimmy's multi-instrumental touches on tenor, alto, and timbales – and given that great monster-inspired approach to lyrics – which ensures that the whole thing stays plenty vivid throughout! Vocals are nice and rough, and the instrumentation is heavy on basslines and clavinet – on titles that include the two part "Dracula", plus "Super Love", "I Love A Mellow Groove", "E Man Groovin", "I Don't Want To Lose You", and "Space Age". Jimmy Castor Bunch Featuring The Everything ManButt Of Course ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Sealed ... $29.99
A funky funky classic from Jimmy Castor – a set that kicked off a tight run of records for Atlantic – and which firmly established his rep as a master of 70s funk! The sound of the set follows nicely from Jimmy's work on RCA – some of the fuzzy "Troglodyte" guitar work of those years, lots of earthy rhythms on the bottom, and Castor's trademark sense of wit – which was firmly in place even during his Latin Soul years! There's a few smoother, sweeter moments too – but these all come off nicely – and as always, Castor's a one-man soul music machine – able to handle plenty of sounds and styles with effortless ease! Titles include "Bertha Butt Boogie", "E Man Boogie", "Hallucinations", "Let's Party Now", "Potential", and "One Precious World". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray CharlesGreat Ray Charles ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s. Sealed ... $13.99
More of a jazz album than the early vocal singles of Ray Charles – but a set that definitely is as great as promised by the title! Ray's in the lead on piano – taking some strong solos, and showing us what a sensitive phraseologist he can be when needed – really showcasing that side of his talents even more strongly away from his vocals. The album's got some great sidemen, too – David Newman on alto and tenor, Joe Bridgewater and John Hunt on trumpets, Emmott Dennis on baritone, and even a bit of guest work on bass from Oscar Pettiford. Newman and Bridgewater get in some nice solos – and titles include "Black Coffee", "The Ray", "Doodlin", "There's No You", and "Sweet Sixteen Bars". LP, Vinyl record album

Pianist Walter Chiles and bassist Clarend Pettiford were 2 parts ofa smokin' little combo that grooved in the sort of jazz/pop style shared by similar groups like Young Holt Unlimited. Most of the tracks have some vocals, but they're sung in kind of a groovy loungey way, as the trio grooves along in the background. Titles include "The Joker", "Love", "All Gone Over You", and "The Longest Walk". Kind of a mix of soul, jazz, and loungey grooves. LP, Vinyl record album

Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! An astounding collection of great numebers by the legendary Clovers – a group whose sound was a key force in transforming Atlantic Records during the 50s! The Clovers were an incredibly tight, incredibly consistent quintet – possessed of a rich talent for both sweet ballads and raspier groovers, in a way that helped push vocal harmonies much more strongly into an R&B mode than some of the efforts of groups who came before. This 16 track set features many of the group's best numbers from their Atlantic years – not just the few familiar hits, but a great batch of lesser-known tracks that show just how strong The Clovers sound was overall. Titles include "Devil Or Angel", "One Mint Julep", "Lovey Dovey", "Your Cash Ain't Nothin But Cash", "Nip Sip", "Good Lovin'", "I Got My Eyes On You", "Down In The Alley", "Don't You Know I Love You", "Love Bug" and "If I Could Be Loved By You". Great lost work from Ornette Coleman – material recorded in New York and LA during the years 1959 through 1961 – never issued at the time, but pulled together in this wonderful package at the start of the 70s! Although not recorded as an official album, the record stands easily with the best Ornette had to offer at Atlantic Records – and all tracks here have that sense of sharpness, rhythm, and timing that made the Coleman combo one of the most exciting of the time. Players include Ornette on alto throughout, plus Don Cherry on trumpet and pocket trumpet, Ed Blackwell and Billy Higgins on drums, and Charlie Haden (mostly), Scott LaFaro, and Jimmy Garrison on bass. All tracks are originals by Ornette – and titles include "Moon Inhabitants", "The Fifth of Beethoven", "Circle with a Hole In the Middle", and "The Alchemy of Scott La Faro", featuring the great late bassist, Scott La Faro! An early standout set from Ornette Coleman – and a record that features him blowing on tenor, instead of his usual alto – as you might guess from the title! In a way, Ornette's playing on tenor is almost freer than his alto work – a bit more open-ended and exploratory, stretching out strongly – yet still also hitting that great rhythmic groove that made his Atlantic albums so great – thanks to rhythm from Jimmy Garrison on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. Don Cherry's in the group on pocket trumpet, and the tunes are as provocative as their titles – which include "Ecars", "Enfant", "Mapa", and "Cross Breeding". LP, Vinyl record album

Dees' approach is wonderful – a bit rootsy, with some slight southern soul elements – but also righteous and progressive, with a bit of a Curtom vibe in the mix – a perfect blend for Dees' upfront presentation of the lyrics, and the powerful message in his music! And the lyrics are sublime – really thoughtful words that go way past any standard cliches – mixing the personal and politics in ways that few other records did this well – a quality that's made this one a lasting treasure for years. Great small combo work by Roberta Flack, recorded early in her career, when she was still one of the hippest things around – and it's among her best records! Roberta's really come into her own as vocalist at this point and solidifying here personal style – with that clear tone and perfectly controlled style and phrasing – balancing a jazzy sensibility with the emotions of her gospel roots. A few tracks have some large arrangements by Arif Mardin, William Eaton, or Deodato – but most tracks feature a core group of studio jazz players that includes players like Joe Farrell, Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey, Hubert Laws, and Bernard Purdie. An amazing record from the team of Flack & Hathaway – one of the hippest duos in soul! Individually, each had taken the music to new heights and new audiences, through the use of jazzy phrasing and sophisticated lyrics, while never selling out in the way that earlier pop soul acts had been reduced to. Flack's somber folksy style is a perfect match for the warm spirituality of Hathaway – and the pair work beautifully in counterpoint on hits like "You've Got A Friend" and "Where Is The Love", as well as on more obscure numbers like "Be Real Black For Me", "When Love Has Grown", and "For All We Know". The album also features a 7 minute spare acoustic/electric piano instrumental called "Mood". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie HarrisInstant Death ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Damn great work from the amazing Eddie Harris – a record that's got a perfect blend of jazz and funk, but still holds onto more righteous elements too! Eddie's using his electric sax in a really great way – not as a gimmick at all, but as a way of linking both the soulful and progressive sides of the Chicago jazz scene – much like the way his old bassist Melvin Jackson did on the classic Funky Skull record! The group here is a small one, but features some really surprising work from players who include Muhal Richard Abrams on electric piano, Rufus Reid on electric and acoustic bass, Billy James on drums and Kalimba, Ronald Muldrow on guitar, and Henry Gibson on some mighty nice percussion. Eddie himself is a stunner – working not just on electric tenor, but also trumpet with a reed mouthpiece, and some weird way of vocalizing through a horn as well. The whole thing's got a vibe that matches the hippest, coolest electric jazz of the Cadet/Concept years – and titles include the great groover "Zambezi Dance", plus "Nightcap", "Tampion", "Instant Death", and "Superfluous". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie HarrisThat Is Why You're Overweight ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good ... $4.99
Eddie continues the funky groove begun on Instant Funk, and smoothed out over albums like I Need Some Money – and although jazz fans probably gave him hell for going this way, we think this is actually a pretty darn great album! The record takes all of Eddie's experimentation with groovy styles from the early 70s, and filters it through some tighter playing that actually makes the groove a lot more compelling than before. A number of the tracks have vocals, almost in a humorous Bill Cosby mode – but in a way that also preserves the party feel of the cuts. Players include Bobby Lyle, Paul Humphrey, Buck Clarke, and Bradley Bobo – and one Chicago-recorded track features a great assortment from older years that includes Muhal Abrams, Odell Brown, Marshapp Thompson, Willie Henderson, and Richard Evans. Titles include "Tryin Ain't Dyin", "Ooh", "Exempt", "Live Again", "Flowers", "Why Do You Hurt Me", and "It's All Right Now". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Milt Jackson & John ColtraneBags & Trane ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An incredible collaboration from John Coltrane and Milt Jackson – and one that gives Milt one of his sharpest records ever! The setting is relatively straight – tenor from Coltrane, vibes from Jackson – plus rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Yet there's also a sense of openness here that you'd hardly ever expect on other records by Jackson – especially his contemporaneous sides with the Modern Jazz Quartet – and Coltrane's tenor gets as much room to roam here as it did on Prestige – really cutting some beautifully soulful, open, and flowing lines throughout! Titles include "Bags & Trane", "Three Little Words", "Be-Bop", "Late Late Blues", and "The Night We Called It a Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". LP, Vinyl record album

King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

A great 70s album by Roland Kirk – one that features him working on a lot of short tracks, in a pretty crazy style! A number of the tracks feature Kirk's uniquely quirky reed style in full effect – often processed with added studio techniques, in a very nice way. And along side that mode, the album's also got a beautiful warm side, with great writing, and a level of sensitivity that's sometimes missing from Kirk's earlier records. Lots of good tracks, including "Freaks For The Festival", "Echoes Of Primitive Ohio and Chili Dogs", "Dream", "Horses", "Side Four", "Portrait Of Those Beautiful Ladies", and "Conversation". Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's last truly fantastic albums – a set that still has all the amazingly messed-up qualities of his best late 60s work – delivered with the honest heart and sense of soul that always make us love his music! The set was recorded for Atlantic in the early 70s, and it's got a wonderful mix of inside and outside playing – a bit more Kirk-unleased overall than some of the more focused experiments of previous records – filled with lots of personality, incredible reed work, and a sound that's spiritual, yet also deeply individual too! Rahsaan plays flute, notes flute, black mystery pipes, E flat sax, and clarinet – and other musicians include Charles McGhee on trumpet, Dick Griffin on trombone, Ron Burton on piano, and Sonny Brown and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – plus a hip string ensemble on some cuts – definitely giving the album a touch of the "Black Classical Music" style that Kirk always claimed was at the root of his work. Side two features the extended "Saxophone Concerto", which has some cool breathing tricks that really let Roland wail – and other tracks include "Celestial Bliss", "One Mind Winter/Summer", and "Ninth Ghost", all of which have a nice dose of spirituality. Roland KirkVolunteered Slavery ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Our favorite album ever from Roland Kirk – and a beautiful mix of two different sides of his genius! Side one's got Roland doing these crazy takes on late 60's pop cuts like "My Cherie Amour" and "Say a Little Prayer", plus his own "songs", done with soulful vocals and a straight-on approach that shows him trying to break out of the avant jazz underground, and reach a wider audience with a spiritual message on tracks like "Search For The Reason Why" and "Spirits Up Above". If this description sounds like a mess, it's not – because this side of the album is one of Kirk's most brilliant statements ever about jazz, soul, love and freedom! Side two has Roland in a straighter vein – running through a tight live set from Newport 1968, handled with fire and imagination, the kind of boundless energy he always brought to his public appearances. Tracks on that set include "One Ton", "Three For The Festival", "Afro Blue", and some great remarks by Roland! LP, Vinyl record album

A great little set of Latin jazz – and one of the strongest albums ever from flute man Hubert Laws! At the time of this recording, Laws was playing with Mongo Santamaria's group – and for this second solo outing, he borrows a lot of grooves from Mongo's bag – and also hits a few tasty lines of his own – mixing in even more of those great soul jazz inflections that always made his solos on the Santamaria records for Columbia some of the real highlights of the time. The groove is wonderful throughout – and other players include Chick Corea on piano, Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Benny Powell on tenor, and Bobby Thomas on drums. Most of the tracks are a great mix of the mellow, introspective Lewis approach with some of the freer, more relaxed styles of the soloists – an approach that's slightly third stream, but which also has some of the great sounds and tones that Lewis forged on his Afternoon In Paris album with Sacha Distel. Wild electric work from Les McCann – an album of free, open sounds that's quite a change from his styles of the 60s – and from most of his other work of the 70s too! Side one features an extended 26 minute track titled "The Lovers" – a slow-building number that has Les on sublime Fender Rhodes, as things build slowly with this really spiritual current that comes from the addition of Yusef Lateef on reeds, Cornell Dupree and David Spinozza on guitar, Corky Hale on harp, and both Bernard Purdie and Alphonse Mouzon on drums! The track is loose, but builds into some great funky moments – almost a keyboard version of electric Miles Davis at the time, but a lot more soulful. And side two continues the heavy keyboard vibe – with a killer remake of Les' classic "Beaux J Poo Poo" and a similar "Poo Pye McGoochie", both with the kind of choppy funky grooves Les laid down with Eddie Harris a few years prior!
