✨✧ Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker With Strings (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Clef (Japan), 1949. Used ... Out Of Stock
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey approach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The tracks are a lot freer and less bop-driven than some of Bird's normal work, and it's incredible to hear him soloing with such complexity – even more proof of the genius he clearly exhibited in relation to his contemporaries. This CD reissues one of the first 10" LPs to feature Bird in such material – complete with a great David Stone Martin cover, and 6 tracks that include "I'll Remember April", "Easy To Love", "East Of The Sun", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me". ✨✧ Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito BrothersGram Parsons Archives Vol 1 – Gram Parsons With The Flying Burrito Brothers Live At The Avalon Ballroom 1969 ... CD
Amoeba, 1969. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Long buried live material from Gram Parsons & The Flying Burrito Brothers – captured at the dizzying heights of their cosmic American powers – over a couple shows at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in 1969! These were dates opening for the Grateful Dead – and it's from the Dead's massive recorded archives that this material comes – so the sound is really of fine caliber. Gram & the Burritos weren't shy about playing honky tonk standards, and the sets have a number of them, plus classics from the Gilded Palace album and more! The booklet features notes by Pamela Des Barres and Dave Prinz, with loads of photos. Disc 1 features the set from April 4, 1969, Disc 2 with the similar, and maybe a little stronger set from April 6, with bonus home recordings of "Thousand Dollar Wedding" and "When Will I Be Loved" at the end of the first disc. Titles include "Close Up The Honky Tonks", "Dark End Of The Street", medley of "Undo The Right and "Somebody's Back In Town", "She Once Lived Here", "Mental Revenge", "Sin City", "Lucille", "You Win Again", "Hot Burrito #1", "Hot Burrito #2", "Train Song" and more! ✨✧ John PhillipsJohn The Wolfking Of LA (aka John Phillips, plus bonus tracks) ... CD
MCA/Varese, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's a long way from The Mamas & The Papas by this time for John Phillips – standing on the beach on the cover, all bedraggled in a dirty hat and coat, with a long beard, and a worn-out look on his face – but that change turns out to be a great one for him, as you'll hear on the set! The style here is much rougher and earthier than the sweeter pop of the 60s – a batch of Laurel Canyon folksy numbers that show the hipper side of Phillips that didn't always get expressed in his former pop years. Titles include "April Anne", "Captain", "Drum", "Someone's Sleeping", "Holland Tunnel", and "Mississippi". Plus, the CD features 8 more bonus tracks, most of which are previously unreleased – "Shady", "Lonely Children", "Lady Genevieve", "The Frenchman", "16mm Baby", and "Black Girl". CD

✨✧ Bud PowellBud Powell Trio Plays ... CD
Roulette/EMI, 1947/1953. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from the great Bud Powell – recorded right at an early moment when the pianist was bursting into Birdland fame – working here with a key trio that features Curley Russell on bass and a young Max Roach on drums! Bud seems to have a bit more color in his keys here than in later years – a sense of tone that's balanced by his increasingly deft flights on the keys – that amazing command of imagination and energy that makes a record like this one of the best bold statements of modernism from the bop generation. Many tunes are older standards, but transformed in Bud's hands – partly given a nod to the midtown modes from other players of the postwar years, then completely dismantled once the solos take off. Titles include "Buds Bubble", "Burt Covers Bud", "Off Minor", "I Should Care", "I'll Remember April", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD features 16 tracks in all! CD

✨✧ PrinceOne Nite Alone – Live! (3CD box set) ... CD
NPG, 2002. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful live work from Prince – the only official concert album ever issued by the man during his life, and a great testament to the way that his genius kept on burning bright on stage – even when he wasn't always knocking it out of the park in the studio! There's a fair bit of material here from later years, but also some classics mixed into the set – and the work often emphasizes the jazzier side of Prince's style – partly through his evolved musicianship, but also in the way the tunes come together with an even more sophisticated vibe than the early years. Titles include "Rainbow Children", "Muse 2 The Pharoah", "Extraordinary", "One Nite Alone", "Wanna B Ur Lover", "Do Me Baby", "Diamonds & Pearls", "When U Were Mine", "Mellow", "1+1+1 Is 3", "Nothing Compares 2 U", and "Sometimes It Snows In April". Sun RaExotica ... CD
Modern Harmonic, Late 50s/1960s. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
A fantastic take on the music of Sun Ra – a set that looks at the way his sounds dovetailed with the exotica movement in American music of the postwar years! Given that he claimed to be from outer space, Ra was already pretty darn exotic himself – but his music also arose at a time when artists like Martin Denny and Les Baxter were taking global sounds and fusing them into more mainstream American music, including jazz – with results that have become legendary over the years! And while Denny, Baxter, and other contemporaries were more involved with mood music, Ra was part of a generation of jazz musicians – such as Yusef Lateef or Wilbur Harden – who were working a richer vein of the territory for jazz – as you'll hear in these wonderful tracks. The set brings together key sides from the earliest Ra recordings, plus some unissued material too – done in the really great style of the other Modern Harmonic reissues in recent years. Unissued titles include "April In Paris", "Paradise", "Star Bright", "Spontaneous Simplicity", "Somewhere In Space", and "Cha Cha In Outer Space" – and other titles include "Overtones Of China", "Tiny Pyramids", "The Nile (part 1)", "Kingdom Of Thunder", "Ancient Aiethopia", "India", "Friendly Galaxy", and "Africa" – plus the complete version of "Island In The Sun". ✨✧ Sonny RedOut Of The Blue (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing set from altoist Sonny Red – a player who hardly ever got to make any albums as a leader, and who really burns brightly on this Blue Note classic! Red's got a tone on alto that's as deep and sharp as most tenorists of his generation – extremely soulful, but with a really raspy edge that's almost modern at times – a combination that's quite unique, and which makes his playing on a few key albums well worth tracking down. This album's one of the best of Sonny's few dates on record – and it features the saxophonist working with two different groups – both headed by Wynton Kelly on piano, and with either Sam Jones or Paul Chambers on bass, and either Roy Brooks or Jimmy Cobb on drums – a hell of a great rhythm lineup, no matter how you slice it! Both groups are right on the money, and the whole album swings very nicely – and titles include "Alone Too Long", "The Lope", "Nadia", "Bluesville", and "Blues In the Pocket". CD features 5 previously unreleased bonus tracks too – "Crystal", "Lost April", "Blues For Kokee", "You're Driving Me Crazy", and "You're Sensational". CD

Landmark, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A cool take on the music of Charles Mingus – handled here by his old drummer Dannie Richmond, in a great small combo mode that's quite different than usual! The tunes are all pretty darn dynamic, but have a really different flavor – some very right drums from Richmond, who almost seems to have a bit more presence here than under the guidance of his old boss – and some especially nice horns from Ricky Ford on tenor and soprano sax, and Jack Walrath on trumpet and flugelhorn – both blowing in bold lines that would make Mingus proud, but also feeling plenty of their own selves as well. The remainder of the group features Cameron Brown on bass and Bob Neloms on piano – and titles include "Seven Words", "April Denise", "Cumbia & Jazz Fusion", and "Feel No Evil". ✨✧ Dinah ShoreDinah Sings Previn Plays (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1959/1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Think what you want about Dinah Shore, she could serve up some pretty great vocals at her best moments – and this album is definitely one of those moments! The style here is laidback and late nite – with Dinah singing alongside backing from the trio of Andre Previn on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Capp on drums – all working in an easygoing mode that comes across with a great small club feel. Previn's piano is especially nice – filled with light flourishes that illuminate the tunes nicely, but in a subtle way that's never too over the top – and usually touched with just a hint of sadness to fit the mood of the songs. Titles include "April In Paris", "Then I'll Be Tired Of You", "The Man I Love", "That Old Feeling", "It Had To Be You", "I'll Be Seeing You", and "If I Had You". CD

Columbia, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little soundtrack – even if you've seen it a million times! Simon & Garfunkel always had a really dark quality to their music, but it never seemed to show as much on the pop charts as it did when used brilliantly by Mike Nichols in this important film. Their tunes emerge in slightly different versions, with a style that's a bit more adult and more off-center than we remember – all sitting next to some groovy instrumental tunes score by a young Dave Grusin, and shifting the mood nicely from track to track. Titles include "Whew", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "The Singleman Party Foxtrot", "April Come She Will", "On The Strip", "The Folks", "Mrs Robinson", and "Sounds Of Silence". CD

Zoot SimsZoot Sims Quartet At Las Vegas Jazz Society ... CD
PJL (Japan), 1976. Used ... $24.99
Wonderful work from Zoot Sims – recorded live in Las Vegas in the mid 70s, and captured with an open-ended feel that features plenty of room for solos! Sims really dominates the record – stepping out front of the rhythm section and blowing some incredibly imaginative lines that get past the shorter mode of his studio sessions. There's a feel here that almost reminds us of Sonny Stitt at his best – Zoot blowing in a relaxedly creative mode that flows out with near-perfect choices in tone and phrasing throughout. Most tracks push the 10 minute mark, and the performance features 6 well-recorded numbers that include Zoot on soprano sax on "Flower Waltz", and back on tenor for the tracks "It Had To Be You", "Thumbs Up", "Emily", "I'll Remember April", and "If I Should Lose You". A gem of a 50s album from Frank – well-themed and swinging, with a batch of travel-related tunes that really groove nicely! Billy May handled the arrangements on this one, and he gives the record a nice jazzy finish that fits the globe-trotting tunes well – taking Frank around the world in a song, and returning him home peacefully by the end of the set. Titles include the great originals "Come Fly With Me" and "It's Nice To Go Traveling" – plus "Isle Of Capri", "Around The World", "April In Paris", and "Brazil". CD features 3 bonus tracks too! CD

Sublime vocal work from Carol Sloane – one of her earliest sessions, and one of her greatest too – recorded in 1959 by Larry Elgart, yet never issued at the time! The album is very intimate, and Carol's vocals really sound beautiful in the setting – moving with more poise and gentle power than on other records – alongside backing that just features light guitar from either Chuck Wayne or Bucky Pizzarelli, plus bass and a bit of cello! There's no drums or piano at all – so the feel is very moody, and nicely blue-tinged through the use of guitar – in ways that make even the familiar tunes sound quite unique and special. Titles include "April Ador Cools", "Summertime", "Angel Eyes", "It Could Happen To You", "Hush-A-Bye", "In The Wee Small Hours", and "Guess Who I Saw Today". CD

✨✧ Johnny Hammond SmithThat Good Feelin (That Good Feelin/All Soul) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet double-header from Johnny Hammond Smith – 2 early albums on a single CD! All Soul is one of the hardest to find albums by Johnny Hammond Smith – a sweet set of easy-going grooves, with a wonderful late night soul jazz approach! The feel here is very much in the mode of work by Jimmy Smith from the time – grooving by a rhythm group that includes Thornel Schwartz on guitar and Leo Stevens on drums, and freely styled solos by Johnny over the top! Titles include "Easy Like", "All Soul", "Secret Love", and "Sweet Cookies". That Good Feelin features some very early work as a leader from Hammond hero Johnny Hammond Smith! There's a slight R&B undercurrent on some of the cuts – that formative organ sound before the smoother styles of the 60s soul jazz years – and Smith's got help from Thornel Schwartz on guitar, who'd played famously with another Smith – Jimmy – plus George Tucker on bass and Leo Stevens on drums. Titles include the originals "Puddin" and "That Good Feelin" – plus "My Funny Valentine", "I'll Remember April", and "Billie's Bounce". CD

Dakota StatonDynamic! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1958. Used ... $3.99
The title certainly gets it right – as Dakota Staton is definitely dynamic on this one, but not in a way that's hokey or forced at all! Instead, the record nicely lifts Staton from some of the more laidback and bluesy modes of her other 50s records – into a fuller range of styles that are inflected with plenty of jazz – scored nicely by arranger Sid Feller, and played by a group that includes some great vibes, flute, and piano. The sound is sometimes dark and moody, sometimes lively and swinging – and titles include "I Wonder", "Say It Isn't So Joe", "Let Me Off Uptown", "Night Mist", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Some Other Spring", and "It Could Happen To You". ✨✧ Buddy TateTexas Tenor ... CD
Sackville, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Texas tenor from the great Buddy Tate – heard here in a lesser-known session from the 70s – originally done for the indie Sackville label, and easily one of Tate's best recordings from the decade! Buddy's in a nice, loose, open sort of setting – a bit like that on his classic Felsted album – and the record's free from some of the need to overstate the "classic" nature of the leader – as you'd sometimes find on the 70s – and still allows Tate to be a vibrant, contemporary expressionist on the tenor! The group's a Canadian rhythm section – with Wray Downes on piano, Dave Young on bass, and Pete Magadini on drums – and titles include "June Night", "Alone Together", "Someday Sweetheart", "I'll Remember April", and "Bye Bye Blackbird". CD also features two bonus tracks – never issued – "Isfahan" and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". CD

The legendary European tenorist is still sounding wonderful here – deep-toned and dexterous, as he works with a tight quartet in the nicely intimate setting of a jazz club in Copenhagen! Jesper Thilo is proof that once a soloist hones their craft on their horn, their creativity never dims – and that's definitely the case here, as the tenor lines have the feel of late life work by Sonny Stitt or Ben Webster – as Jesper blows to accompaniment from Soren Kristiansen on piano, Daniel Franck on bass, and Frands Rifbjerg on drums. Titles include "Memories of You", "I'll Remember April", "Oh Gee", "Blue N Boogie", "Sweets To The Sweet", and "Lester Leaps In/Montmartre Blues". CD

Prevue, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of Lucky Thompson's most obscure recordings from the Paris scene of the mid 50s – a great complement to the better-known material issued on the Jazz In Paris and Fresh Sound CDs! The conditions here are similar to those – in that Thompson's working in well-chosen groups with drummer Dave Pochonet, in tightly arranged nonet formation, but in a way that still has Lucky's solo work center stage. The sound is totally great – with lots of those raspy, earthy tones that we love in Thompson's work – and the other players often just complement Lucky in the background, almost as if they were recorded at a slightly lower level. CD features 12 tracks from sessions recorded March 29 and April 17, 1956 – titles that include "Once Upon A Time", "A Sunkissed Rose", "Still Waters", "Brown Rose", "Portrait Of Django", "Distant Sound", "Quick As A Flash", "The Parisian Knight", "Street Scene", and "To You Dear One". ✨✧ Sarah VaughanLive At Rosy's ... CD
Resonance, 1978. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning live recording from Sarah Vaughan – recorded in the late 70s, when she was at a whole new height in her talents – and at a level that's far more dynamic and striking than some of her other records from the time! The double-length set presents the first-ever commercial release of a beautifully recorded performance originally done for NPR – with Vaughan in a very open, expressive mode alongside a trio with Carl Schroeder on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – working at a small club in New Orleans with a wonderfully soulful vibe! Vaughan shines beautifully on the ballads, but really blows us away with the swingers – hitting some edges we don't always hear on her 70s sides for Pablo, Groove Merchant, or Mainstream – managing vocal complexity with inherent rhythm, all with effortless ease. The sound quality is wonderful – and titles include "I'll Remember April", "A Lot Of Livin To Do", "The Man I Love", "Watch What Happens", "If You Went Away", "I Could Write A Book", "Time After Time", "Somebody Loves Me", "My Funny Valentine", "Everything Must Change", "Send In The Clowns", "Sarah's Blues", and "East Of The Sun". Savoy/32 Jazz, 1973. Used ... $7.99
A helluva great CD – one that brings together both volumes of the legendary Night At Boomers live dates on Muse Records from the 70s! The core material is a great little session of soul jazz – and very much in a classic mode, but with touches of the Strata East sound of the 70s. Although Blue Note and Prestige had seemed to abandon straighter soul jazz by the early 70s, Muse was cranking out some nice sides with older players of the 60s scene. This set features Cedar Walton's crack trio with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, joined by tenorist Clifford Jordan, who was blossoming into a whole new player during the decade. Titles include "Holy Land", "Down In Brazil", "Cheryl", "Naima", "I'll Remember April", "All The Way", and "Bleeker Street Theme". CD

EmArcy/Phonogram, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best jazz-based sessions recorded by Dinah Washington in the 50s – appropriately titled Dinah Jams, which is a pretty good reference to the feeling of the set! The sessions were recorded in a relatively relaxed, intimate feel – not necessarily as unbridled as a true jam session might be, but with a lot more interplay between the instrumentalists in the group than you might get on a typical 50s jazz session. And with horn players that include Cliford Brown, Harold Land, and Herb Geller – alongside rhythm by Junior Mance, Richie Powell, and Max Roach – you'd have to expect that there'd be some good interplay on the set! Titles include "I've Got You Under My Skin", "No More", "Darn That Dream", "You Go To My Head", and a nice open-ended version of "I'll Remember April"! CD

✨✧ Joe WilliamsJoe Williams At Newport 63 ... CD
BMG, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer album that's one of Joe's best! Unlike some of his other records as a vocalist, in which the arrangements are a bit too cluttered to swing, this nice relaxed live set has Joe hitting a very soulful groove, and stepping out nicely on cuts like "Gravy Waltz", "Come Back Baby", "April In Paris", "Some Of This N Some Of That", and "She's Warm, She's Willing, She's Wonderful". Backing is by an all-star group that includes Coleman Hawkins, Junior Mance, and Zoot Sims – and the whole thing's got a fluid, easy feel that's totally great – and which gets past the usual Joe Williams cliches! CD also features 3 bonus tracks too. CD

✨✧ Masao YagiModern Jazz Blue Mood ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most haunting albums we've ever heard from Japanese pianist Masao Yagi – and one of his straightest, too! The set's a moody, late nite affair – but that hardly means it's sleepy at all, as Yagi brings a decided edge to the proceedings – setting things up with some slightly unusual arrangements, even amidst familiar tunes. Some numbers focus on his piano lines – which have a much more human feel than usual – while others make use of some key trumpet and tenor solos, both recorded with just the right depth to fit the mood of the record. Titles include "Cry Me A River", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Autumn In New York", "April In Paris", "Goodbye", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

✨✧ VariousJazz Travels – A Global Expedition In Search Of The Good Groove ... CD
Hitop (Spain), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not just jazz travels, but Brazilian, funk, and soul as well – all pulled together by Oli Stewart (Casbah 73) into one of the hippest compilations we've heard in years! Before making his own music, Oli spent more than a decade travelling the globe on record-buying trips – not just the US, but Brazil, Brussels, and many points global – all in search of an unheard snippet of funky soul or jazzy groove! This incredible little set brings together a dozen nuggets from those key crate-digging years – a good deal of which have never been reissued before, and especially not in such fantastic company. The overall vibe is warm, jazz-influenced, and filled with great keyboards, vocals, and rhythms that run from bossa-influenced to European modal, with plenty of American touches in between! Titles include "Silly Savage" by Adam Ross Reeds, "Don't Kill Your Fantasy" by Chinchilla, "Enfa" by Gerardo Batiz, "David" by Celia, "Cross Country" by Archie Whitewater, "Right Now" by Salena Jones, "Consolacao" by Luiz Eca, "Tornei A Caminhar" by Sebastiao Tabajos & Pedro Dos Santos, "Snowflake" by Ronnie April's Positive Energy, "Tocata" by Fernando Tordo, "Just Say Goodbye" by Esther Phillips, and "Negro En Sol Menor" by Daniel Lencina & Candombes De Van Guardia. Octave-Lab/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not just soul music lovers – as the set's got plenty to offer for fans of funk and jazz too – a wonderful assortment of cuts from the golden years of the music, all put together here with a really great ear for a groove! The cuts are sourced from a number of different labels – including Groove Merchant, De-Lite, Sussex, and Brunswick – and because of that, they come together with a great sense of variety – not a confused approach to a compilation, but one that really knows how to play different cuts off one another – introducing you to rare gems, and making you love familiar cuts all over again in a different way!
