Angel Bat Dawid & Tha BrothahoodLive ... CD
International Anthem, 2021. Used ... $9.99
Angel Bat Dawid is a completely mesmerizing artist on record, but she's even more mindblowing in a live setting – where she seems to channel the energy of the skies and the planet into her music – brimming over with righteous energy that guides the rest of the group with a hell of a lot of power! Angel plays clarinet, keyboards, and sings throughout – effortlessly shifting between those elements in a group that includes tenor, keyboards, electronics, bass, and lots of drums and percussion – bursting out with an effortless blend of larger conception and improvisation – at a level that may well have Dawid emerging as one of the few folks from Chicago that could ever hope to match the legacy of Sun Ra! That's not saying that Angel is anything like Ra at all – but in a similar way, she immediately comes across as a true visionary, a deeply spiritual talent, and an artist who's following a path that's completely her own. Features material recorded live in Chicago and Berlin – and titles include "Capetown", "Black Family", "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black", "The Wicked Shall Not Prevail", "Melo Deez From Heab'N", "VIKTORious Return", and "Enlightenment". International Anthem, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful solo sounds from Angel Bat Dawid – a Chicago clarinetist who works here with the same inventive spirit as the other contemporary artists on the International Anthem label! By that, we mean that although Angel's music starts in jazz, it quickly becomes something else – as she assembled the record not from a solitary solo performance, but by overdubbing sounds she'd recorded around the globe, and back home in Chicago – mixing her own very beautiful reed lines with a variety of other instrumentation – all recorded on cell phone, which gives the whole thing a wonderfully fresh feel! Don't worry about the album being too gimmicky, or too DIY – as it's got the same appeal as a studio-recorded spiritual session by a larger group – and there's plenty of focus on Dawid's incredible solos on her chosen instrument, with a vibe that's likely to have her rising to the level of clarinet giants like Jimmy Guiffre or John Carter. Titles include "Black Family", "Capetown", "The Oracle", "We Are Starzz", "London", and "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black". CD

David Raksin/Cyril MockridgePreminger At Fox (Fallen Angel/Where The Sidewalk Ends/Laura/Daisy Kenyon/Whirlpool) ... CD
Kritzerland, Late 40s. Used 2CDs ... $24.99 28.99
A great package of work that features material from some of the famous 40s films directed by Otto Preminger for 20th Century Fox – served up on two CDs' worth of hard-to-find soundtrack recordings! Fallen Angel is from 1945, and features a lovely main theme by David Raksin with a few jazzier and mellower variations – plus the vocal number "Slowly", sung in two versions – one by Alice Faye and one by Dick Haymes! Where The Sidewalk Ends is a gem from 1950 – and has a city-styled score by Cyril Mockridge that's mighty nice – complete with Alfred Newman's theme "Street Scene", and mixed with dramatic numbers that paint a nicely gritty urban scene! Laura is represented by the longer "Laura Suite" by David Raksin – featuring the main theme with some great orchestra variations. Daisy Kenyon is from 1947, and is represented by two longer Raksin numbers – "Daisy Kenyon" and "Love On The Cape". Last is the thrilling Whirlpool from 1949 – done with a heady Raksin score that has lots of differing mood and instrumental changes – a total of 17 tracks that almost work like a sonic movie themselves! ✨✧ Dave BrubeckAngel Eyes ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful later work by the Dave Brubeck Quartet – an overlooked gem from their 60s Columbia sessions, and an album that features interpretations of tunes written by the great Matt Dennis! Dennis had a way with a tune that often put dark corners in the back of lovely melodies – and this subtle sense of emotion is a perfect foil for the understated talents of Paul Desmond's alto work on the set. Brubeck himself is nice too – less trick-oriented than usual, in a way that lets us focus on the colors of his tone – and drummer Joe Morello and bassist Eugene Wright are in top form, as usual. Titles include "Violets For Your Furs", "Let's Get Away From It All", "Little Man With The Candy Cigar", "Will You Still Be Mine", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardBlack Angel ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A totally fantastic set from the turn of the 70s, and one of Freddie Hubbard's most soulful, spiritual albums ever – a seminal chapter in the evolution of soul jazz – and a record that was a keen inspiration for changes to come on labels like Strata East and Black Jazz! The group here features Kenny Barron on both electric and acoustic piano – really stretching out with a hip, open sort of sound – possibly his first of this type on record – and other players include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Reggie Workman on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and Patato Valdes on added percussion – giving a more complicated groove to the best numbers. Tunes are all long and well-penned – three by Freddie himself ("Eclipse", "Spacetrack", "Gittin' Down"), one by Kenny Barron ("Black Angel"), and one by Walter Bishop (the original recording of his classic "Coral Keys"!) ✨✧ Gram ParsonsGP/Grievous Angel ... CD
Reprise, 1973/1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Both albums complete on one CD! First up GP – a mindblowing solo debut from Gram Parsons – music that's nicely different than his work with both the Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds, and which shows Gram really stepping out into the role of a 70s superstar – to which he would have ascended, were he not taken from us all too soon! There's a fragility to the record that's wonderful, even when things are tight – a quality echoed by vocals from Emmylou Harris, and which comes through especially strongly on Parsons' on tunes. Backing features all sorts of country studio greats – including James Burton on guitar and dobro, and Buddy Emmons on steel guitar – and titles include the completely sublime "She" – a cut that should have been a 70s classic – plus "Still Feeling Blue", "We'll Sweep Out The Ashes In The Morning", "Streets Of Baltimore", "That's All It Took", and "Cry One More Time". Next is Grievous Angel, one of the most beloved country rock albums of all time! This album is likely to have cemented Gram's legacy even if he didn't pass away before it's release – it's really that good – mixing mournful honk tonk laments, bleary-eyed barroom rockers and soul searching lyricism in a way that was pretty damn distinctive in the 70s. It's bookended by the (arguably) 2 greatest songs he ever wrote, "Return Of The Grievous Angel" and "In My Hour Of Darkness", plus "Love Hurts", "Brass Buttons", "$1000 Wedding", a rockin' cover of Tom T Hall's "I Can't Dance" and "Hickory Wind". And for all the praise we just heaped on Gram Parsons in the preceding sentences, there's no discounting the importance of co-singer and ""In My Hour Of Darkness" co-writer Emmylou Harris, who's like the beautifully voiced angel on Gram's shoulder. ✨✧ Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1974. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too – not credited with production, due to contractual reasons, although he helped put most of the album together. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". This legendary album finally gets its proper treatment – with very detailed notes from Minnie's husband/co-creator Richard Rudolph – and 11 bonus tracks from the vault – including "Lovin You (single version with countdown)", "Reasons (ext version)", "It's So Nice (ext version)", "Take A Little Trip (duet with Stevie Wonder)", "Seeing You This Way (acoustic)", "Edge Of A Dream (ext version)", "Perfect Angel (ext version)", "Every Time He Comes Along (ext version)", "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down (Perfect Angel version)", "Lovin You (alt band version)", and "Our Lives (ext version)". Really fantastic – great sound and the bonus tracks are beautiful! CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsAngel Eyes ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stone classic from Gene Ammons – and a record that introduced his talents to a whole new audience in the 60s! The album's a more laidback one than some of Jug's more hard-blown honkers – as you might guess from his hit rendition of the ballad in the title – and the instrumentation here varies between organ from Johnny Hammond Smith and piano from Mal Waldron – making for a nice tapestry of dark-tinged, late nite moods. Other players include Frank Wess on tenor and flute, and Art Taylor or Ed Thigpen on drums. Titles include the classic "Angel Eyes", plus "You Go To My Head" and "It's The Talk Of The Town" – and slightly more groovin numbers like "Getting Around" and "Water Jug". CD

✨✧ Iris DeMentInfamous Angel ... CD
Warner, 1992. Used ... Out Of Stock
The instant-classic debut of Iris DeMent – a record that came out in the 90s, but which has a classic country vibe that not only lives up to DeMent's hardscrabble roots, but which also really blows away any sort of retro or "alt" attempts to hit territory like this at the time! Dement doesn't need to fake anything at all, or hang her music in "authentic" trappings – as it's all there, right at the start – beautifully understated, and set to instrumentation that's a lot different than mainstream Nashville at the time – but which also isn't trying to ape any 50s or 60s modes either. The whole thing's a beautiful testament to one of the freshest new voices of her generation – with titles that include "Our Town", "When Love Was Young", "Mama's Opry", "Higher Ground", "After You've Gone", "Let The Mystery Be", and "Infamous Angel". Metropolitan, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic recent album by Billy Harper – with a sense of greatness, majesty, and spirituality to rival his best 70s work! The album's got Harper working in a very classic mode – with a soulful quartet that features his yearning searching tenor blowing out over backing by piano, bass, and drums. Eddie Henderson adds some trumpet on a few tracks – but the main action is up to Billy, who never falters in his creativity, and is as nimble as ever when it comes to working out his unique spiritual jazz vision. Titles include the sublime "Soul of An Angel", plus "Thine Is The Glory", "Credence", and "Was It Here . . . Is It There?". CD

✨✧ Anita O'DayMisty – Anita O' Day With Don Abney (plus Angel Eyes) ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great later work from Anita O'Day – a set that really focuses in on the mature style of vocals she hit during the 70s – a mode that's quite different from some of the sometimes too-bright styles of her early years, and really lets her find some new feeling in her music! The first half of the set here features Anita in a live trio, with Don Abney on piano – working with just a bit of bass for backup, in a relatively spare setting that really puts the vocals center stage – never too fast or too swinging, which O'Day could sometimes do back in the 50s – and always taking the tunes at just the right pace to make them personally emotive. The second half of the set just features piano from Abney – and the CD seems to feature both the Misty and Angel Eyes albums together. Titles include "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Angel Eyes", "Am I Blue", "Afternoon In Paris", "Bluesette", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and "Black Coffee". CD

✨✧ Duke PearsonAngel Eyes (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Jazz Line/Tokuma (Japan), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare pre-Blue Note session from Duke Pearson – very mellow, very soulful, and with a quality that's unlike most of his later work! The album's a trio side, recorded for the Jazzline label, and it features Pearson on piano, Thomas Howard on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums – the last of whom brings in some wonderfully lyrical lines on the kit, very much in the manner of the free, dancing rhythms used on records with Donald Byrd. Pearson's piano has a sharper edge than usual – these dark, moody tones that are totally great – almost a rougher version of his later sound, with a great sense of depth. Bob Cranshaw's bass and Walter Perkins' drums are featured on one number – and titles include a killer take on "Jeannine", plus "Say You're Mine", "Le Carrousel", "Bags Groove", and "Exodus". Plus, the CD features 3 alternate bonus takes! CD

✨✧ Mike Hurst OrchestraDrivetime ... CD
Angel Air (UK), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful little album of sweet late 60s easy – originally recorded by British producer Mike Hurts for Phase 4 at the end of the 60s, but never issued until now! The set has a really warm and glowing sort of groove – one that's a fair bit more dynamic than most of the rest of the Phase 4 sets, with evocative qualities that almost push the record more into the soundtrack side of the spectrum. Hurst's arrangements of the tunes are often quite driving, but never too dramatic – and although the set's an orchestral one, there's a great sense of pacing, timing, and rhythm to all the numbers. Titles include "April Fools", "Cool", "Sound Of Silence", "Wednesday's Child", "Good Vibrations", "Image", "Mission Impossible", and "Theme From The Wild Ones". CD

A young player, but one with a really tremendous sound – easily poised to become one of the most impressive European saxophone talents of the next few years! Pescara plays alto, but with a depth that makes him sound like a classic player from many years back – a sense of fullness and focus that's really amazing, and which never slips up for a minute. A few tracks here have him really soaring out with unbridled energy – while others hit a calmer, more sensitive side – and all tracks here are originals by Cafiso, showing a nascent writing skill that definitely bears watching. Jimmy DawkinsFast Fingers ... CD
Delmark, Late 60s. Used ... $11.99
They don't call Jimmy Dawkins "fast fingers" for nothing – and the first few minutes of the record are definitely testament to his mighty power on the guitar! The instrument is electric, and recorded with this sense of powerful echo that easily has Dawkins blowing away some of the UK blues rockers who were starting to get into the game at the time – as do his vocals, which we'd put head to head with some of the giants who took this mode and ran with it through the arena rock scene of the 70s! Yet throughout, it's the guitar that's especially amazing – completely confident and masterful, even though this was Jimmy's first album – with nice lean support from Eddie Shaw on tenor, Lafayette Leake on piano and organ, and Mighty Joe Young on second guitar. Titles include "Little Angel Child", "Night Rock", "Triple Trebles", "It Serves Me Right To Suffer", "Breaking Down", "I Don't Know What Love Is", and "I Wonder Why". RCA/BMG, 1974. Used ... $6.99
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". Kieran Hebden's third album as Four Tet – an unpredictable, completely hypnotic batch of abstract beatcraft that sounded like it was built to last when it first appeared in the early 00s – and sure enough, it's sounds as fresh as ever a decade+ later! What makes Four Tet at his best so irresistible is the way to rolls from loosely connective beats and hazy atmosphere on one track to heavy sensory overload and back again, fully hypnotizing either way, and all the while holding together in a way that feels of like a single piece. There's a lot of different sounds coming in and out, and not a single audible bit of it is dispensable. Near perfection from one of the more creative laptop instrumentals of his generation. Pacific Jazz/Blue Note, 1965. Used ... $4.99
One of Dizzy Gillespie's hippest big band sessions ever – and one of the few dates as a leader from arranger Gil Fuller! Fuller will always be best-remembered as the man who composed some of Dizzy Gillespie's best known tunes from the bop era – like "Manteca", "One Bass Hit", and "Things To Come" – but on this album from 1965, he's reunited with Dizzy for a large group set of tracks that feature Diz as the main soloist – at a level that really shows the growth of both men at the time! Fuller's charts are large and full, but with a sense of space that's really amazing – almost like some of the soundtrack work Dizzy had done for The Cool World – with a mix of soulful and modern moments that's really wonderful. The group's kind of a mix of hip LA players – with Phil Moore Jr on piano, Dennis Budimir on guitar, and Jimmy Bond on bass – plus a larger set of horn players backing Dizzy up. Titles include a number of great originals – such as "Be's That Way", "Big Sur", "Things Are Here", "Man From Monterey", and "Angel City". CD

There's a lot to love here for fans of pre-Summerteeth era Wilco and American Recordings era Jayhawks – which is to say it soundly ignores the noisier sounds of the rock mainstream at the time for a more down home vibe. Includes "V", "Pecan Pie", "Glad U Sorry", "He's A Dick", "Red Headed Stepchild", "Williamton Angel", "Friend", "Nowhere Bound", "Radio King" and more. CD

A&M/Verve, 1975. Used ... $7.99
A work of understated brilliance from guitarist Jim Hall – and one of our favorite records by him! The setting is simple – Hall plays live with a trio, on a set of familiar standards – but the results are remarkable, as both Hall and the rhythm section manage to bring a hell of a lot of swing and imagination into such a tiny space! Hall's always had a rhythmic approach to his work, but here, playing with drummer Terry Clarke and bassist Don Thompson, he really opens into a great groove – stretching things past his usual standard, and bringing a lot more soul into the set than you might expect. The tunes are ones you'll recognize – "Angel Eyes", "Round Midnight", and "The Way You Look Tonight" – but the real charm is what Hall and the trio do with them! CD

A heavier, darker prime era set from Massive Attack – and rightly remembered as a classic! The grooves are still really strong, but the trip hop pioneers are delving more deeply into a bass heavy dub trip with a deep, rumbling bottom running throughout the tracks and some distorted guitar and reverb drenched key and sample bits punctuating the cuts. Stunningly strong to this day – which is no mean feat given the rapid musical evolutions of the 90s onward! Savoy/Nippon (Japan), 1956. Used ... $11.99
The jazz message of Hank Mobley here is loud, proud, and plenty soulful – a key early illustration of his massive talents on the tenor sax, recorded in the relaxed company of top-shelf players of his generation! The format's a bit less structured than Mobley on Blue Note – more in a Prestige mode, although not as loose as a blowing session, given the length of the tunes. Two groups work with Hank on the set – one that includes John LaPorta on alto, Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Horace Silver on piano – another with Byrd on trumpet and Ronnie Ball on piano. La Porta's alto is an especially nice treat – quite an unusual modern pairing with Mobley – and rhythm is from either Doug Watkins or Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Really beautiful work from bassist William Parker – a set of tracks that are every bit as righteous as some of his other albums, but in a completely different way! The music here is from a musical production that Parker's been creating over the past two-decades – beautiful vocal tunes that are some of the most poetic he's ever penned – sung here by Lisa Sokolov, alongside piano from Cooper Moore – a stripped-down approach that really gets to the heart of the lyrics, but never with any sort of sleepy presentation, given the vibrancy of Sokolov's approach. One tune features an additional cello, but overall the album is just voice and piano – Parker just acts as composer and producer – and titles include "The Death Of Death", "Footnote To A Dream", "For Jeanne Lee", "Poem For June Jordan", "Invocation (for David S Ware)", "Angel's Tear", and "Soul In Heaven". A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. One of Frank Sinatra's last great ballad albums for Capitol – a sad and dreamy batch of tunes that kicks off with the incredible "Only The Lonely" – one of those Sinatra torch songs that's so great, so sad, nobody else has ever been able to record a better version, nor have they really tried! The rest of the album's great, too – with arrangements by Nelson Riddle that are very much in the Wee Small Hours mode – expressive, but subtle and sophisticated – at that level that set Sinatra so far apart from most other male singers of the 50s. Despite the creepy cover, there's a mature, adult approach to the whole thing – a new level of emotion that most other singers wouldn't find for a decade. Sons Of Kemet borrow a page from the AACM with the title of this excellent album – maybe no surprise, as the work of the London group is every bit as revolutionary as the experiments of the AACM back in the day! As with their previous records, the Sons are working very hard to find a new language in jazz – one that has all the intensity of the spiritual forefathers who opened the music up at the end of the 60s, but which also has different rhythmic currents, vocal refrains, and instrumental energy that marks the music as very much the group's own creation! There's often a log of pulsation at the core of the tunes – not brass or bounce, but an evolution past those influences – with saxes from Shabaka Hutchings, tuba from Theon Cross, and double drums from Tom Skinner and Eward Wakili Hick. The set features great guest appearances too – vocals from Angel Bat Dawid, Moor Mother, Kojey Radical, D Double E, and Joshua Idehen – plus trombone from Nathaniel Cross, alto from Cassie Kinoshi, and tenor from Steve Williamson and Kebbi Williams. The album's got a really soaring, spacious feel – with jazzy roots that stretch back to groups like Kalima, and include Fertile Ground, but an overall sound that's very much in step with the current sound of the 21st Century London scene. A second great set of tunes from the Chicago scene of the early soul years – one that features a number of alternate takes and previously unissued tunes, including a few great numbers by unknown groups! The set was put together by Chicago soul expert Bob Miner – and has a real focus on group obscurities from the end of the doo wop era to the earliest years of Chicago soul. Miner's got a keen eye for the uncommon, and has pulled together a number of tracks from rare singles, acetates, and audition discs. The fidelity is surprisingly good, given the source of many of the materials – and the package is a refreshing change from the oft-compiled bigger hits of the Chicago scene. And while Ben's previous record was completely mindblowing, this set really pushes things over the top – and has the artist at the helm of a large assemblage of musicians who provide all these different sonic elements to augment the intensity of his vision – as the leader handles cornet, organ, and a host of other instruments – while singing on most cuts, but in a way that's majestic and very much his own – neither soul, nor jazz – at least in familiar ways. A fantastically beautiful record that stands as the first meeting between Bobby Hutcherson and Harold Land – an album that's possibly even better than the more famous Blue Note work by the pair! This is one of those "once in a lifetime" jazz sessions – filled with magical interplay that's made the record a favorite with collectors for years, and done with a sound that's as lyrically graceful as it is soulful and righteous! Hutcherson's vibes are at their warmest 60s mode, but still have some of the angularity of his more modern sides for Blue Note – but Land is the real discovery here – as he steps out with a fluidity that surpasses any of his earlier hardbop albums, a flowing exploratory style expressed on both flute and tenor – with a mode that's years ahead of its time, and sounds a lot more like work on labels like Strata East or Muse from the 70s. Tracks are nearly all originals by Land, and are the kind of thoughtful jazz compositions that show up on a rare few records from the 60s – all of them are great, and sparkle with creativity and a subdued sense of righteousness. The other players on the date include Joe Sample on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Donald Bailey on drums – and titles include "One For Nini", "Angel Dance", "The Peace Maker", "40 Love", "Stylin", and "The Aquarian". ✨✧ Minnie RipertonCapitol Gold – The Best Of Minnie Riperton ... CD
Capitol, Late 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An essential collection of work from the legendary Minnie Riperton – a set that was crucial to so many listeners, as during the early years of the CD era, it was the only way you could find any of her music in print! And all these many years later, the set's still a wonderful introduction to her charms – filled with all the right cuts that will both introduce you to Minnie's many charms, and help longtime listeners remember just what a special talent she was in soul music, before being taken from our planet all too soon! The work here is all post-Rotary Connection, post-Chess Records – when Minnie was out in Cali, and working with key musical partner Richard Rudolph, as well as heavyweights like Stevie Wonder and Leon Ware too. CD features 17 tracks in all – including "Perfect Angel", "Memory Lane", "Lovin You", "Stick Together", "Woman Of Heart & Mind", "Young Willing & Able", "Light My Fire", Simple Things", "Stay In Love", "Can You Feel What I'm Saying", "Wouldn't Matter Where You Are", "Give Me Time", You Take My Breath Away", "Inside My Love", "Here We Go", and "Adventures In Paradise". Arista, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice best-of collection of Gil Scott Heron's work on Arista Records – issued in the 80s, with Gil looking a bit odd in a "Members Only" kind of way on the cover! Still, the music is great – and titles include th the extra new track "Re-Ron", an electro track about Ronald Reagan – plus live version of "The Bottle", which is edited down from it's original long version, and the tracks "Winter In America", "Johannesburg", "Angel Dust", "Shut Em Down", "Ain't No Such Thing As Superman", and a short excerpt of "B-Movie" – plus the original "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". ✨✧ SlayerReign In Blood (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
American, 1985. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Slayer's fastest, darkest, heaviest album ever – and a defining moment in thrash metal! In the world of heavy rock, there's before Reign In Blood, and after Reign In Blood. Slayer redefined the genre, there's just no getting around it! In the 1980s, when pious or otherwise moral watchdogs were eyeing pop culture for boogeymen, Slayer was more than willing to be the world's scariest band – but beyond the calculated outrageousness, it's simply amazing music – bringing hardcore punk speed into the heavy metal mold. Best metal album ever? Includes "Angel Of Death", "Piece By Piece", "Necrophobic", "Altar Of Sacrifice", "Jesus Saves", "Criminally Insane", "Reborn", "Epidemic", "Post Mortem" and "Reigning Blood". ✨✧ Sonic YouthThousand Leaves ... CD
DGC, 1998. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sonic Youth near the end of the 90s – once again in creative ascension! After flirting with mainstream appeal a bit earlier in the 90s – without going too far out of their alt noise comfort zone – they seemed to lean more and more towards their slow-building exploratory facets as the years went on. A Thousand Leaves is probably their boldest Geffen record to that point ,with longer songs that are just "out" enough. Includes "Contre Le Sexism", "Sunday", "Female Mechanic Now On Duty", "Wildflower Soul", "Hoarfrost", "French Tickler", "Hits Of Sunshine (For Allen Ginsberg)", "Karen Koltrane", "The Ineffable Me", "Snare, Girl" and "Heather Angel". ✨✧ Super Jazz Trio (Tommy Flanagan)Standard ... CD
Baystate/BMG (Japan), 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's nothing standard here – because with a lineup that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – the set is definitely a cut above! The title's a reference to the songs – which are all older jazz standards – but the trio really set fire to the music, despite its familiarity – coming together with a round, warm, well-recorded tone that brings new life out the music – and which gets careful creative handling by all three players. The mix of Workman and Chambers is especially nice – a bit more fresh than some of Flanagan's other rhythm partners – and titles include "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Autumn Leaves", "It's All Right With Me", "Angel Eyes", and "Straight No Chaser". ✨✧ Kitty WellsCountry Music Hall Of Fame Series ... CD
MCA, 1950s/1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We're not normally the types to walk around singing the praises of the major labels – but hats off to MCA's Country Music Hall Of Fame Series, with beautifully remastered classic tracks that were previously nearly impossible to track down on vinyl, and excellent notes and biographical details. Honky tonk angel Kitty Wells gets the queen's treatment here – with 16 sweet, heart-tugging (but too endearing to be heartbreaking) singles originally released on Decca between the early 50s and mid 60s. Kitty sounds sad, sweet and beautifully earth-bound, with her vocals placed well out in front of the spare steel and waltz-picked guitar, and distant fiddle. Every ones a classic! Tracks include "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", "Icicles Hanging From Your Heart", "My Cold, Cold Heart Is Melted Now", "I Gave My Wedding Dress Away", "Release Me", "Making Believe", "I'd Rather Stay Home", "Mommy For A Day", "Heartbreak U.S.A", "Will Your Lawyer Talk To God", and "A Woman Half My Age". ✨✧ ZoneGimali ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A jazzy duo with a soulful feel – and one of the deepest-sounding sets we've heard on the Irma label in a long time! Zone's got a warmly grooving quality that we really love – an approach that almost reminds us of some of the best British groups trying to do classic American soul at the end of the 80s – but served up here with a few more contemporary touches too – especially in the rhythms, which can be nicely dynamic. Vocals are by both a female and male singer, switching off from track to track – and instrumentation includes great keyboards, piano, guitar, tenor, and trumpet – grooving with a breezily soulful feel on the best numbers. Titles include "Vou Voltar", "Gimali", "Soul Desires", "Finally", "September", "Angel's Wings", "Frontera", "Madrid", and "Slave". CD

✨✧ VariousAcid Lounge In Space – Uneasy Listening Compiled By 45 Dip ... CD
Hed Kandi/Acid Lounge (UK), 2003. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A silly title, but a pretty nice album overall! This 2CD set features a cool selection of downtempo and retro-styled grooves from some of the hipper overseas labels of the past few years. There's a number of cuts on here by artists that we stock and love, but there's even more by artists we haven't – including some pretty cool groups that we were happy to discover. The package was selected by 45 Dip, and not only includes a number of their own tracks, but also has a feel that's pretty much in keeping with their own end of the musical spectrum – laidback, funky, with elements of classic instrumentation. Titles include "Gorgeous George", "Docking", "Something In Space", and "Va Va Voom (Space Lounge mix)" by 45 Dip, plus "Buddha Cowboy" by John Howard, "Mooger Fooger" by Bermuda Triangle, "She's Groovy" by Akasha, "In Spring" by Les Hommes, "Bubble Love" by Chunking, "Sea Of Change" by Broadway Project, "Angel" by Zohar, "One Day Trip In An Elevator" by Hand Polished, "Love Is Incredible" by Bastian, and "Party" by Sporto Kantes. 29 tracks in all! ✨✧ Gene AmmonsGene Ammons Story – The Organ Combos ... CD
Prestige, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Our favorite side of Gene Ammons' talents – summed up nicely in a 2LP set! Ammons wasn't the first tenor player to work with a Hammond organ, but once the format gained popularity, Gene made a wise move to take it up – and it became a pairing that forever defined the later years of his sound! The 2LP set brings together a nice blend of ballads, groovers, and funky tunes recorded for Prestige with organists Johnny Hammond Smith and Jack McDuff during the 60s – titles that include "Born To Be Blue", "Twistin The Jug", "In Sid's Thing", "Blue Room", "Water Jug", "Getting Around", "Angel Eyes", "Stormy Monday", "Velvet Soul", and "Down The Line". ✨✧ Chet Baker1959 Milano Sessions (aka Chet Baker With 50 Italian Strings) ... CD
King Jazz, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the better-known sessions from Chet's time in Italy at the end of the 50s – a really beautiful album that has Chet working with a string orchestra in a set of lush arrangements that really bring a lot to his sound! The album really sounds great – not sleepy, but warm and beautiful, in a style that was perfect for Chet's fading romanticism. A few cuts have Chet taking a vocal chorus or two, but mostly, the focus is on trumpet solos. Titles include "Violets For Your Furs", "Goodbye", "Angel Eyes", "I Should Care", and "The Song Is You". Plus, the set also features 4 bonus tracks by Chet with a sextet that includes Gianni Basso on tenor – on titles that include "Line For Lyons", "Tune Up", and "Cheryl Blues". CD

✨✧ Andy BeyAmerican Song ... CD
Savoy, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful recent work from Andy Bey – a singer who seems to get better and better as the years go on! As the title might indicate, the set's a collection of classic American songs – 20th century standards and evergreens, done by Bey in his wonderfully dusky style of singing – and supported by small group backing that includes piano from Geri Allen, tenor and flute from Frank Wess, trombone from Steve Davis, and trumpet from Vernell Garrett. The backings have some nice lush tones at some moments, and fall off into sparer moods at others – allowing a lot of space for Andy's wonderful voice to roll in! Titles include "Never Let Me Go", "Lonely Town", "Midnight Sun", "Angel Eyes", "Speak Low", and "Lush Life". CD

✨✧ Evans BradshawLook Out For Evans Bradshaw! ... CD
Riverside (Japan), 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Look out is right – because the album's a killer and one of the few sides ever cut by Michigan pianist Evans Bradshaw! Bradshaw's got a hard-hitting approach to the keys that was relatively fresh in the early years of soul jazz – and unlike some of his more famous contemporaries, he never resorts to easy phrasing to put over his sound – and can instead work some complicated magic on the keys that often echoes modern styles of the 50s, but comes across with an earthier feel overall. This debut session is a simple but extremely effective trio outing – with Bradshaw on piano, George Joyner on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Titles include "The Prophet", "Coolin The Blues", "Blueinet", "Angel Eyes", and "Love For Sale". CD
