Sure, there's been collections of Congolese music before – but this one's got that special something extra that Analog Africa can bring to play – an ear for just the right tracks that have enough funk and soul to open the ears of listeners who might not normally be digging deep into African music – yet will also pack plenty of punch to listeners who do! You can dive right into the collection and listen – the music will take you on a mighty great journey, even if you know nothing about the scene. Sublime sounds from the Italian modernist scene of the 70s – an album produced by Franco Battiato, and which shares a lot with his own classics from the time! Composer/performers Raul Lovisoni and Francesco Messina may have a few less dark corners than Battiato – and work here in a style that's surprisingly melodic at times, almost with that sense of natural minimalism that we love on releases from Brian Eno's Obscure Music label. Side one features the completely beautiful "Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo" – with Francesco Messina on vocoder moog, synth vocoder Roland, and synthi EMS – but all coming across with a warm sound that's much more analog, mixed with piano from Michele Fedrigotti. Side two begins with a harp solo titled "Hula Om" – played by Patti TAssini – and closes with the moody "Amon Ra", which has slight vocals from Juri Camisaca, and "glasspiel" from Raul Lovisoni – which sounds like a glass instrument being tuned slowly. One of the coolest collections of work we've ever heard from the great Mort Garson – a selection of tracks that were done during the same years as his famous album releases in the world of moog and analog synth, but done for much more obscure sources that include television, film, and other avenues of expression! The title's a reference to a cut here that was used during a 1969 broadcast of the moon landing – but there's so much more here too, and as always with Garson, there's a blend of electronic experimentation and tunefulness that make the whole thing pretty darn groovy – and not just a trip on the farther reaches of experimental electronics. A really deep dive into the world of electrified Peruvian music – one that's put together not only with a killer collection of tracks, but also some really detailed notes that expand on this wonderfully unique hybrid of styles! Rhythms are often in the territory of cumbia from slightly farther north in the South American scene, but given all sorts of rootsier percussion touches – then mixed with electric guitar and thin keyboards, of the sort that you'd normally expect to hear on a 60s surf record – yet reworked here with a uniquely tropical vibe! Rare work from a sometimes-overlooked chapter in the career of Miles Davis – a time when Sonny Stitt was briefly filling the tenor sax role that was more famously held by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter! Stitt in any group is always a treat – and here, working with Miles, he turns in some of his most far-reaching solos of the period – very different than the shorter, more economical work of his studio albums – and even different than some of his longer-form material on Prestige to come! Stitt really rises to meet Miles in spirit – maybe in part because of the rest of the group features the famous rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – moving hard and with a great sense of modal energy, on titles that include "Four", "All Of You", "No Blues", "Two Bass Hit", "Walkin", "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "If I Were A Bell", and "Round Midnight". A gem of a record from the great Sonny Greenwich – an open-toned guitarist with a style that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a Canadian player who never got much exposure down here in the US, but who really stands apart from most of the jazz guitarists of his generation! There's this unusual sense of color and phrasing that really makes Sonny stand out – chords that almost feel as if they're broken open and exposed from a Wes Montgomery sort of tightness – able to move with a sense of fluidity, but a unique sense of rhythm that's definitely Greenwich's own. The rest of the group here really match the spirit of his music – maybe more so than on any other record of his as a leader – a great lineup that includes Don Thompson on electric and acoustic piano, Rick Homme on bass, Terry Clarke on drums, and Clayton Johnson on percussion. A really compelling blend of jazz and electronics – served up here in a way that's very different than any other project of its nature! This isn't one of those records where reed improvisations mix with free analog electronics, yet it's also not one where electric rhythms provide the base for jazz samples – as Konrad Agnas criss-crosses all sorts of lines and styles with the record – sometimes reveling in the acoustic warmth of the saxophone work of Per Texas Johanssen, other times letting rhythms get crisp and crackling from his own drums, informed with work on an OP1 synthesizer! Torbjorn Zetterberg provides some amazing bass – almost funky at times, and certainly some of his most soulful work on record – and the group also features Hammond B3 and piano from Johan Graden. Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. A really haunting bit of early electronics by Jean Michel Jarre – the soundtrack for the film Les Granges Brulees from the early 70s! The work here has a very different sound than Jarre's later music – not nearly so neat and tidy, with lots of rough edges, and shorter tunes that have a really kind of spooky, other-wordly feel. And yet despite these qualities, there's also a good degree of melody to the set – as the shorter tracks bubble forth with some great themes that sound even more enchanting in the analogue electronic mode. Fantastic fuzz from a French Canadian combo of the 60s – one of the coolest garage bands we've ever heard from up north at the time, romping here with a style that's equal parts Sunset Strip and some of the hipper Parisian groups of the time! Lyrics are all in French, and the production has this nice sense of darkness that makes echo out of the organ lines, jangly guitar, and nice touches of fuzz – all flowing together with a style that sounds plenty magic all the way through, even if you can't always understand the lyrics. Some of the guys in the group were still teens at the time of recording, which you can hear in the youthful energy of the songs – and titles include "Je T'Aime", "Abandonne", "La Solitude", "Seul Sur Terre", "Je Ne Veux Plus", "Aimes Proudemment", and "Soyons Differents". One of the weirdest Italian soundtracks you're ever likely to hear – mad music from the 70s, originally written for a demonic religious performance! Stefano Marcucci has roots in the psych scene, but also recorded the set in the Sound Workshop of Piero Umiliani – and the work has just the sort of mix of fuzz and electronics you'd expect from that pedigree – some really way out analogue electronic elements at times, mixed with more familiar song structures and some chorus vocals – often set to a psych funk groove that reminds us of some of the grooviest French arrangers at the end of the 60s, such as Michel Colombier and Jean Claude Vannier. The chorus vocals are especially offbeat – as they sound like they're going to be sweet, but feel more satanic in the end – and titles include "Pange Lingua", "Inferno", "Coro Dei Penitenti", "Allejua", "Rendete Grazi", "Gli Occhi Di Tutti", and "Roma Nobilis". Fuzzy guitars, analog electronics, moody production, and slightly sinister vocals – all elements you'll find in abundance here, in this well done look at UK work from a generation when the US scene was dipping into modes that were later dubbed "post-rock" – and helped to define the style of a generation! The British take on this territory is nicely different from American work of the time – and there's maybe a larger, wider palette of approaches going on – elements borrowed from other styles and generations, but woven into these wonderful waves of sound that made for a great farewell to the 20th century! The collection is in a slightly newer range than we're used to hearing from Ace Records, but they do an equally great job with the material – as the choice of cuts is superb, and the detailed notes provide plenty of direction throughout the musical journey. One of the moogiest records of all time – a legendary LP of "electronic pop music of the future" – sourced and claimed as an influence by everyone from Stereolab to the Beastie Boys! The legendary team of Gershon Kingsley and Jean-Jaques Perry are working here in early tape experiments that chop up quirky analogue electronics – and uses them to produce moogy songbits and space sounds, all with a really groovy beat! There's a simple magic here that has made the album hold up for years, and stand apart from a legion of later imitators with a clear, simple, and effective style that makes the best of all the bleeps and blonks in the set! The legendary Suzanne Ciani is in very classic form here – working on EMS, Buchla, and Moog synthesizers alongside French electronic artist Jonathan Fitoussi! The pair serve up twin-keyboard magic throughout, with a bit of vocalization from Ciani – and the record has all the evocative qualities of her best early material, really a return to the kind of spacey, analog sounds that made Suzanne such an important pioneer back in the day, even if she's only finally getting the right sort of recognition she deserves in the 21st Century! The sound of the work is sublime throughout – very lively, and "live" – not so much processed or programmed, as delivered by two musicians working together with instruments they understand inside and out. That's "bards" of prey, not birds of pray – a great selection of country singers, really doing their best on a well-chosen batch of unusual material! There's some of the slight doom/gloom themes going on here that you'll find in other material from the Hillbillies In Hell series – but there's also maybe a more expansive ear for the music too, maybe more thoughtfulness for the quality of the vocals instead of the oddness of the tune – an effort that we can wholeheartedly endorse! One of the greatest moments ever from pianist Sadik Hakim – a player most people know for his contribution to the American bop scene of the late 40s – but an artist who grew even more strongly during his later years in Montreal! This album's a real highlight from that overlooked time in Hakim's career – a set that not only has the musician playing both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, but which also highlights his tremendous skill as a writer, too – with a richness that easily rivals the best on the European scene of the time – such as some of our favorite London jazz musicians, or the great work on MPS. Side one features the extended "London Suite" – a work that's poetic, but also pretty darn groovy too – and side two features on shorter compositions that include "Liliane", "Grey Cup Caper", and "Moon In Aquarius" – all carried off beautifully by a group that includes Al Khabyyr Sayyd Abdul on alto and flute, Billy Robinson on tenor, and Peter Leitch on guitar. Wonderfully sensitive sounds from this really unique group – an instrumental combo, but one who don't really play jazz – and who also avoid some of the more jamming indulgences of some of their prog contemporaries too! Part of the special blend in their sound is the way they can work with higher ideas, but not huge egos – really bringing their concepts down to a more personal level, with instrumentation that includes flutes, saxes, and pianos from Alain Bergeron – plus guitar and piano from Jerome Langlois, piano and percussion from Vincent Langlois, bass from Yves Leonard, and drums and percussion from Gilles Schetagne. The group also add in a few extra elements at times – vibes, trumpet, and even a bit of strings – and the set features the long suites "Les Aventures De Saxinette Et Clarophone" and "Les Porches De Notre Dame" – and the shorter "La Grosse Torche" and "Chromo". A Canadian prog masterpiece from this key 70s group – and a record that's got some nicely understated elements that almost feel a bit more like some of the best European electric jazz acts of the time! There's definitely vocals on the record – sung by Pierre Flynn – but his use of piano and keyboards is even more striking, often with a spaciousness that brings a slight current of funk to the record at times, especially when he serves up Fender Rhodes passages that have that chunky quality we love from this period of the work of Marc Moulin. The group work with an added vocal group at points, to increase the majesty of the music – and titles include "Generation", "Voyage En Mer", "Violence", "Ma Chanson", "Les Nouvelles Terres", and "La Passe Du Grand Flambeau". Peter Tessier turned plenty of knobs to make a record this great – which is maybe no surprise, given that he worked as an engineer in the Canadian branch of RCA Records in the early 70s! Pete definitely makes that legacy work for him – with really wonderful arrangements and sharp production that set a strong fire to illuminate his unique songs! The record's not really psych or prog, and Tessier's more raspy vocal style almost gives it more of the 70s personality of a singer like Lou Reed – while the songs echo singer/songwriter modes, but are executed with a lot more sonic complexity – almost in a way that feels like some of those 80s UK records that were influenced by psych, but come off sounding very different than the originals of the 60s.
