VariousNorthern Soul Scene – 25 Northern Soul Classics From The Decca Vaults ... CD
Decca (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
A fantastic set – totally fresh, and way different than the usual Northern Soul compilation! The set features many tracks recorded in the UK – which makes for a sound that's different than some of the American-heavy grooves that you'll hear on other sets, and which adds in a compelling dose of British 60s pop. Don't worry about a lack in "soul", though – because that side of the set's just as strong as you could hope for – it's just expanded further with some compelling new takes on arrangements and instrumentation. Titles include "Listen To My Heart" by The Bats, "Giving Up On Love" by Sonny Childe, "Billy Sunshine" by Billie Davis, "So Called Loving" by David Essex, "Nothing But A Heartache" by The Flirtations, "Name It You Got It" by Micky Moonshine, "Don't Change It" by Fearns Brass Foundry, "Our Love Is In The Pocket" by Amen Corner, "Heart Trouble" by Eyes Of Blue, and "Something Beautiful" by Adrienne Posta. 25 tracks in all! ✨✧ Lloyd MillerNear & Far East ... LP
East West, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the most evocative albums ever recorded by the enigmatic Lloyd Miller – a set created at Brigham Young University, in Utah – but filled with a mix of different styles from the other half of the planet! Miller plays a variety of stringed instruments and percussion – including some great xylophone, shamisen, tabla, and santur – and is joined by flutes and recorders, tar, ching, and vocals from two different female singers – both used sparingly, in ways that barely get in the way of the instrumentation! There's less jazz here than some of Miller's later projects – and the record's got a vibe that almost makes it feel like some classic Ocora recording of sounds from Japan, China, Viet Nam, India, and other points east. Titles include "Hakimi", "Co La", "Luu Thuy", "Sakura", "Karpagame", "Seh Gah", and "Amen Avci Vurma Beni". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ParliamentFunkentelechy Vs The Placebo Syndrome ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
By this point, George Clinton and the P-Funk team were on top of the world! The record is a masterful dose of slick mothership jamming – perfectly woven together with that tightly compressed style that really served Clinton's production work well. The tracks are long, but never too loopy – and thanks to help from the Bernie Worrell, Jerome Brailey, Gary Shider, and the Horny Horns, the album stays very tight instrumentally all the way through! Loads of Parliament classics, including "Bop Gun", "Funkentelechy", "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk", and the massive "Flash Light", which we've heard a million times, but which never ceases to amaze us! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes booklet, poster, and Casablanca inner sleeve! Cover has a cut corner, and two bent corners at the spine.)

✨✧ Staple SingersAmen! ... LP
Epic, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A righteous early classic from The Staple Singers – a record that rings out with a spiritual note in the title, but one that also covers a whole host of social issues with its power too! The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus a few of his own great tracks too. The result is a record of timeless power – different from the group's later 70s soul hits, but equally great – with titles that include "More A Hammer Than A Nail", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "As A Eagle Stirreth Her Nest", "Do Something For Yourself", and "This Train". John ColtraneSun Ship ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $49.99
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but also showing even some of the sharper edges that John would explore with the group after this one – a beautiful swan song to the lineup of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Things soar with a hell of a lot of spirituality, yet never get too overindulgent to lose their groove – and titles include "Amen", "Dearly Beloved", "Ascent", "Attaining", and "Sun Ship". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing. Cover has some ringwear, bumped corners, and a partially removed Record Club Of America sticker in back.)

Inner City, 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The title's a wonderful one – given the warmth and great spirit of this legendary trio – a near-perfect assemblage of the talents of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums! Both Carter and Williams help Hank to hit the hipper side of his talents for the 70s – and together, they work as one – with a well-rounded, well-crafted style that's a great testament to the group's strong appeal at the time. Titles include "Freedom Jazz Dance", "A Child Is Born", "Mr PC", "All Blues", and "Doom". LP, Vinyl record album

Horace SilverSilver 'N Voices ... LP
Blue Note, 1977. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A beautiful, beautiful record from Horace Silver – one of his great 70s experiments for Blue Note – and a set that has him working in the same "jazz with voices" mode explored by Max Roach and Donald Byrd in earlier years! The core of the set is focused around the great work of Silver's combo – with Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums – a wonderfully cohesive unit that arcs and turns with all these sweet little shifts – keeping up with the creative rhythms directed from Silver, while cascading through a beautiful range of tones and colors as well! The vocals follow suit beautifully – directed by Alan Copeland, but with a much more soulful approach than his 60s material – bursting forth with this warmth and sense of tone that really matches the instrumentation. Titles include "I Will Always Love You", "Out Of The Night", "Incentive", "New York Lament", "Mood For Maude", and "All In Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the lined Blue Note inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner.)

✨✧ Vi Velasco with Zoot SimsCantando Bossa Nova ... LP
Colpix, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the few albums ever cut by singer Vi Velasco – and a great vocal follow-up to the Zoot Sims bossa albums on Colpix! Zoot plays tenor on this record too – mixing his solos with Vi's vocals in a style that's like the interplay between Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto – with a similar blend of American jazz and Brazilian roots! Arrangements are by Al Cohn and Manny Albam – and the players also include Marky Markowitz on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – who brings in some nice Brazilian flavors on his instrument. Titles include "Recado", "Tu E Eu", "Sem Saudades De Voce", "Exactamente Como Tu", "Nao Branques Com O Amor", and "Tenho Ritmo" – many of which are bossa versions of familiar tunes. ✨✧ Rod StewartGasoline Alley ... CD
Mercury, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius, pure genius – and a record that will completely revise your thinking about Rod Stewart – a set that will blow away all the cliches you might know from later years, and will have you re-examining his early years in all their glorious brilliance! The sound is amazing right from the start – heavy on acoustic instrumentation that offers up a much rootsier side of Stewart than his work with The Faces or Jeff Beck – yet at a level that still packs a hell of a lot of punch, thanks to these incredible drums that get the whole thing going right from the start – urging on the vocals to a crackling charm that's even more powerful here away from any big chart hits. Even familiar tunes are completely remade by the godlike early Rod – as you'll year on tracks that include "Only A Hobo", "Gasoline Alley", "My Way Of Giving", "Cut Across Shorty", "Lady Day", "Jo's Lament", and "Country Comforts". Atlantic, 1961. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the most highly-regarded albums of Hank Crawford's 60s run on Atlantic Records – a set when everything seems to come together just right – and provide an even better showcase than usual for Hank's soulful lines on alto sax! The set also features tenor from David Newman – easily a perfect companion to Crawford for the record – and the rhythms have a nicely laidback, easygoing vibe – almost more Prestige Records soul jazz than the usual Atlantic style of the time. The set's got some warm mellow instrumental versions of blues classics, plus a few originals like "Lorelei's Lament", "Blue Stone", and "Playmates". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red & purple label pressing. Cover has light surface wear and some spotty aging/blemishes at the top left corner.)

✨✧ FunkadelicUncle Jam Wants You ... LP
Warner, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all! There's a sense of perfection to everything here – one that really gets the group past their tripped-out early years, and firmly into the sublime territory George Clinton hit with Parliament – an amazing sound that's wrapped up perfectly on every single track – grooves that definitely raised the bar for a huge amount of mainstream funk acts who were popping up at the time. Production is never too slick, and there's still lots of tasty guitar licks wrapped up in the mix – and titles include the classics "Freak Of The Week" and "Not Just Knee Deep" – plus "Field Maneuvers", "Holly Wants To Go To California", and "Foot Soldiers". Tubby Hayes – we love you! You're a big ol' white guy from England, but you're one of our favorite-ever tenor players – and this set of tracks features some pivotal work from your late 50s years! The set features Tubby on tenor and vibes, Terry Shannon on piano, Jeff Clyne on bass, and Phil Seamen on drums – and although the tunes are simply done, Tubby's wonderfully well-crafted solos remind us of the best of Sonny Rollins or Gene Ammons, with slight touches of early John Handy. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Embers", "Blue Hayes", "Sunny Monday", and "Like Someone In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ P Funk All StarsUrban Dancefloor Guerillas ... LP
Uncle Jam/CBS, 1983. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
George Clinton may have pretty well disbanded Parliament and Funkadelic by the time the 80s came around, but the Mothership is still soaring highly on this first album from the P-Funk All Stars project – featuring some (but not all) of George Clinton's better players from various groups! Urban Dancefloor Guerillas his a pretty great little set of jammed-up cuts produced by Clinton, Bootsy, Gary Shider, and Sly Stewart. The flame was still burning, even in the "dark years" of the litigious early 80s – on a set that's actually a bit more stylistically diverse than some the related projects, though unified by never wavering funk! Titles include "Copy Cat", "Pumpin' It Up", "Catch A Keeper", and "Generator Pop". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a light warp, but plays fine. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a promo stamp, mild corner bend.)

✨✧ Bola Sete (aka Djalma De Andrade)Ocean Memories ... CD
Samba Moon, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful batch of solo guitar recordings from Bola Sete – originally recorded at Fantasy studios, and first issued as the album Ocean on the Takoma label in 1975. This CD adds in a nice batch of 9 outtakes from the session, to create a whopping double CD set of 19 tracks, which is one of the best-ever chances you'll get to hear Bola Sete's solo guitar work. Sete's style had really matured by this point, and the CD is warmly introspective, and extremely beautiful. Titles include "Ocean Waves", "Guitar Lamento", "Let Go", "Xengo Xengo Xerengo", and "O Astronauto". CD

✨✧ Chris SpeddingBackwood Progression ... LP
Harvest (UK), 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Very hip work from guitarist Chris Spedding – one of his first albums as a solo artist, but a set that was cut with some of his old bandmates from The Battered Ornaments! Like Spedding, most of the musicians here approach the record with an equal sense of jazz and rock – which often makes for very interesting rhythms and changes, and progressions in the tunes that are quite different both from the mainstream, and more commercial jazz rock albums from the UK scene at the start of the 70s. Spedding's vocals are subtle – usually a bit down in the mix next to the guitar, Hammond, and deft rhythms – and the tracks are shorter than you'd expect – nicely understated, and not nearly the progressive, jamming approach you'd expect from such a lineup. Titles include "Words Don't Come", "The Hill", "Session Man", "Please Mrs Henry", "Out To Be A Law", and "Should The Occasion Arise". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK Harvest pressing in a flip-back cover. NOTE – Cover is entirely wavy and is bent a bit at the corners.)

✨✧ Michael WhiteLand Of Spirit & Light ... LP
Impulse, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from Michael White – one of the few musicians who can actually make us love the sound of the violin in jazz! White's working here in a style that's very much in line with some of the post-Coltrane spiritual soul jazz in Impulse in the early 70s – an approach that's free-thinking, yet never as far outside as some of the avant work on the label during the 60s. Instead, there's a gentle, almost contemplative groove here – one that has echoes of some of Alice Coltrane's more meditative recordings, yet which also breaks out with some of the more modal jazz of Michael White's roots. Players on the album include Prince Lasha on reeds, Ed Kelly on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Kenneth Nash on percussion – and the album's filled with organic textures and beautifully flowing grooves! Titles include the beautiful "Land Of Spirit & Light" suite in three parts, plus "Fatima's Garden", "Fiesta Dominical", "O Ancient One" and "Lament (Mankind)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 70s black label pressing – a nice copy! Top cover seam has some very light wear – but cover is nice overall. Cover also has a small, almost undetectable stain in one bottom corner, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ VariousWhen Jah Shall Come ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of rare work from Jamaican studio genius Bunny Striker Lee – unusual cuts and unreleased material – all of it a further testament to his legendary ear for a mindblowing sound! These aren't half-baked cuts, or material that deserved to fall to the cutting room floor – because the style is years ahead of its time, and put together with techniques and styles that are still pretty darn revolutionary after all these many years! Some tracks have a strong vocal presence, others are more instrumental – and in addition to Lee's famous flying cymbals technique, there's lots more going on here too – including some totally cool space age sounds. Unreleased tracks include "Bell Road Rock" by The Aggrovators, "Joe Frazier" by Tommy McCook, "Go Jah Jah Pickney" by Linval Thompson, "No Man Is An Island" by Johnny Clarke & Horace Andy, "Bunny Lee & King Tubby's Dubplate Special" by Cornell Campbell, "Life Of My Own" by The Raver, "Look How Long Nyabinghi Calling You" by Linval Thompson, "King Tubby's Vs Arrows Dubplate" by Cornell Campbell, "Jamaican Fruit Of African Roots" by Lennox Brown & Sheila Richards, "No Babylon Shall Escape In This Time" by Johnny Clarke, and "Every Knee Shall Bow" by Ronnie Davis. ✨✧ Jorge BenForca Bruta ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A fantastically soulful album from Jorge Ben – one of his greatest records ever, and a key part of Brazilian music in the 70s! The album marks an earthier shift for Jorge – a sound that's still rooted in the samba influences of the 60s, but which also takes on a bit more soul at the bottom – thanks to rhythmic contributions from Trio Mocoto, who work here famously to help Ben shape the overall feel of the set! There's still a bit of larger orchestrations at moments, but these are used sparingly just to sweeten the sound – leaving the main force of the music to come from Jorge's guitar, and the cuica, percussion, and tamborim of the trio. The vocals are wonderful too – slightly raspy, and with a bit more feeling than we ever remember Jorge having on record – sometimes a bit intimate, yet always with an undeniable presence throughout. One of those records that still sends chills up our spines, year after year – with tracks that include "Oba La Vem Ela", "Ze Canjica", "Pulo Pulo", "Apareceu Aparecida", "Terezinha", "Mulher Brasileira", "Forca Bruta", "O Telefone Tocou Novamente", and "Charles Junior". Maria Bethania recorded some of her best early material in a live setting – and this album is great testament to that fact! Unlike some of her Tropicalia contemporaries – whose live records could sometimes be a bit rough around the edges – Bethania's albums were always very well-put together performances done with tremendous musical backings – all quite sophisticated, sometimes even more so than her studio sessions, and magically recorded in a way that still preserved a strong sense of intimacy in her vocals! ✨✧ George ClintonYou Should't Nuf Bit Fish ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great solo work from George Clinton – but a set that's still done in the best late 70s modes of Parliament and Funkadelic! Clinton's clearly more comfortable in the lead here – that new spotlight presence he adopted on the Computer Games album – but he also draws heavily on the sound of the whole ensemble, who refine their P-Funk approach with some slight 80s modes – still showing that although George influenced so many other funk acts during these years, he can still craft a groove better than anyone else! Tracks are nice and long, and filled with Clinton's strong sense of humor – and titles include "Nubian Nut", "Last Dance", "Quickie", "Stingy", "Silly Millameter", and "You Shouldn't Nuf Bit Fish". ✨✧ Bill Coleman & Guy LafitteMainstream At Montreux ... LP
Black Lion, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A rich testament to the strength of the Parisian traditional jazz scene in the early 70s – as key players Coleman and Lafitte work here with a quintet live at the Montreux jazz fest in 1973. Lafitte's tenor is always a treasure, warm and rich, but moody and edgey at the same time – like the best late work of Coleman Hawkins. The longish tracks on the set give him plenty of space to solo – and titles include "Sur Les Quais Du Vieux Paris", "L and L Blues", "Tour De Force", and "Montreux Jump". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Al HaigPiano Interpretation ... LP
Sea Breeze, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Solo material from pianist Al Haig – a set that shows him in really great form for the 70s! Al's playing mostly familiar numbers here – and his approach is warmly sensitive throughout – still as fluid on the keys as the Haig heard during famous 50s bop years, but with a richer sort of feeling too – a contemplative depth that really makes these tunes sparkle – taking them far past the simple evergreens that might have become in a more standard trio setting. Al really manages to pack a lot into just a short space – proof that his improvising talents haven't dimmed at all over the years – and titles include "Lament", "Joanne", "Summertime", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "Bess You Is My Woman". ✨✧ Ahmad JamalPoinciana Revisited – Ahmad Jamal At The Top ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful open-ended Ahmad Jamal music from the end of the 60s – and a set that really shows his growth as a player at the time! The "revisited" in the title refers to Jamal's earlier success on Argo records with a recording of "Poinciana" – one that forever made the tune his, thanks to a long-flowing approach that took the familiar standard, and turned it into the perfect foil for Jamal's expressive piano style. But the vibe here is very different – even more open than before, with a beautiful 9 minute reworking of the tune that's worth the price of admission alone! The trio features Jamil Sulieman on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and titles include "Poinciana", "Call Me", "Lament", "How Insensitive", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". LP, Vinyl record album

Essential dub material from the legendary King Tubby – a set that's one of the best of the genre during the classic years – and which stands as a true testament to how great the format can be when handled right! The watchword here is simplicity – as the key elements are almost isolated in little sonic chambers, then set to resonate alongside each other – pulled from rhythms from tracks initially done as vocal productions, but reworked through the mixing talents of Erroll "ET" Thompson and Tubby. Players include Bobby Ellis on trumpet, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall on tenor, and Augustus Pablo on organ and piano, plus a bit of clarinet. Titles include "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub", and "Frozen Dub". A great one by The Miracles! Smokey and the group are clearly pushing the envelope here – stretching out for a deeper harmony sound, moving towards some of the smoother styles they'd use a bit more in the 70s. The result is a slightly-confused album, but one with some really interesting material that gives the group a chance to experiment more with their vocal phrasing. Includes the heavy soul number "Flower Girl", plus the tracks "Who's Gonna Take The Blame", "Darling Dear", "Wishful Thinking", "Point It Out", and "Don't Take It So Hard". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic record – one of Shaw's real landmarks of the 70s, and a lasting testament of soul jazz genius! The record features Shaw working with a group that includes a number of like-minded players – Frank Strozier, Ronnie Matthews, and Stafford James – all of whom fit together perfectly with Shaw to craft some strident tunes with the same sort of modal groove and soulful spiritualism as his work on the Moontrane record. Titles include "Sashianova", which has a great modal groove, "Jean Marie", and "Tomorrow's Destiny" – but the whole album is great together, and we never tire of listening to it! ✨✧ VariousMusical Offering – Soviet Composers Perform Their Works On The ANS Synthesizer ... CD
Cold Spring (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Very noisy work from the Soviet scene of the 70s – modern music experiments on the ANS synthesizer, which was one of the darker forces in electronic music at the time! The set really showcases the new wave of avant inspiration that was brewing up after so many years of Soviet-promoted more mainstream modes – and at times, there's a denseness and power to the pieces that almost make you feel as if there were some secret underground corner of the scene, just waiting for a moment like this to unfurl a very rich musical message! The set features two tracks by famous film composer Eduard Artemiev – "Mosaic" and "Twelve Looks At The World Of Sound" – and other cuts include "Stream" by Alfred Schnittke, "Birds Singing" by Edison Denisov, "Sacrament" by Ole Buloshkin, and "Vivent Non Vivente" by Sofia Gubaidulina. ✨✧ Harold LandHarold In The Land Of Jazz ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Hard-burning early work from tenorist Harold Land – exactly the kind of date that set him apart from other west coast players of the 50s! Although he was part of the LA scene of the time, Harold Land grooved a lot harder and louder than his cool jazz contemporaries – and this album's a perfect chance to hear the underground bop scene of which he was a cornerstone. The tunes are amazing – and even the familiar numbers have a real edge, thanks to sharp arrangements by Harold and Elmo Hope. Equally great is the group – which features an unusual US appearance from Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson, who's a surprisingly soulful fit for the sound of the session – plus Carl Perkins, the legendary sideways pianist, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Frank Butler on drums. Titles include "Delerium", "Smack Up", "Grooveyard", "Lydia's Lament", and "Nieta". LP, Vinyl record album

Geffen, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
A big one for Siouxsie and the group – from a time when they were both pushing forth the darker corners of mainstream pop, and making a few surprising turns for the dancefloor tune! Some of the upbeat moments here crossed over surprisingly well in the clubs at the time, but even those still have all the trademark touches intact – fuzzy guitar, space around the edges, and those haunting vocals that were always the lady's greatest calling card. Titles include "The Killing Jar", "Rawhead & Bloodybones", "The Last Beat Of My Heart", "Rhapsody", "Peek A Boo", "Ornaments Of Gold", and "Turn To Stone". CD
