✨✧ Kenny DrewEvergreen ... CD
Alfa/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1991. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure lyrical genius from pianist Kenny Drew – working here in a superb trio that features Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and the great Alvin Queen on drums! There's a special quality to the recording that seems to make each element in the music resonate in fantastic ways – especially the bass of Niels', who at times almost feels like as much the star of the set as Kenny! Titles include "Greensleeves", "Angel Eyes", "Eco Trip", "Nature Boy", "Sunset", "Blues In Green", and "Song Of The Birds". CD

✨✧ Great Jazz TrioGreat Standards Vol 3 – I'll Remember April ... CD
Alfa/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great Jazz trio, and a great later showcase for the lyrical talents of Hank Jones on piano – as the group here really offers Hank that perfect blend of warmly open space and gentle swing that always seems to bring out his best! Jones is matched with Mads Vinding on bass and Billy Hart on drums – the latter of whom is wonderfully loose and open, which sounds great next to the tighter, warmer currents that flow from Vinding's fingers with impossible ease! And yes, the tunes are standards, all familiar – but given very personal readings by Hank, in a lineup that includes "Stella By Starlight", "My Funny Valentine", "My One & Only Love", "Yesterdays", "I'll Remember April", "Night In Tunisia", and "Round Midnight". ✨✧ DB ShrierDB Shrier Emerges (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Alfa/Omnivore, 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Philadelphia has always had a strong legacy of amazing jazz musicians – so much so, that sometimes really great players sometimes get overlooked! That's definitely the case with the young DB Shrier here, a tenorist who's got a fresh modern sound that's all his own – not free jazz, but different than earlier modern styles too – stretched out with a new sense of space, and done with a very cool group of equally hip younger players too! Probably the biggest name in the group is bassist Tyrone Brown – a player who'd go on to do a number of great records over the years – and the rest of the lineup features William Roye on drums and Mike Michaels on piano. Michaels contributed a very cool Indian-inspired tune to the set, titled "Raveesh" – and other titles include Brown's "East", plus versions of "Blue Lights", "These Foolish Things", and "All Blues". CD features bonus material – "Steeplechase", "Opus #3", "Indiana", "Helene", and "Just You Just Me". CD

✨✧ ChicReal People/Tongue In Chic ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1980/1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great early 80s 2-fer – with a pair of killer albums from Chic! First up is Real People – wonderful work from Chic, and a record that maybe didn't include any super-huge hits, but which is maybe even better because of that – a sometimes-overlooked gem that has the team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards in perfectly sharp formation! The group have already moved past disco, yet maintain that core funk that always makes their work so tremendous – rock-solid basslines from Edwards, ripping guitars from Rodgers, and unified vocals with help from Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin – who both really help the tunes soar! Titles include "Chip Off the Old Block", "Open Up", "26", "I Loved You More", "Real People", and "Rebels Are We". Tongue In Chic is damn funky work from Chic – one of those early 80s records that has the group freed from any need to cross over to the disco dancefloor – which only seems to bring out a deeper groove from the duo of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards! Basslines and guitar are razor-sharp – and there's some jazzy horns brought into the mix, which emphasize the great 80s groove in the music – a soaring quality that has the twin vocals of Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin really soaring over the top! Titles include "I Feel Your Love Comin On", "When You Love Someone", "Sharing Love", "Chic (Everybody Say)", "Hangin", "Hey Fool", and "City Lights". CD

✨✧ Louis MoholoBra Louis Bra Tebs/Spirits Rejoice ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1978/1995. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful double-length package of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a 2CD set that features one record from recent years, and a key classic from the 70s! Spirits Rejoice is one of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". That record is followed here by 1995's Bra Louis Bra Tebs – a session with a similar style, especially in its use of African-inspired rhythms – but one that also features a different lineup, and some great use of vocals! Francine Luce sings on a number of the album's best tracks – in a style that's almost an avant-tuned approach to vocalese, and which seems to carry echoes of Norma Winstone – a voice that's dreamy one minute, challenging the next – and often used as a key instrument in the combo's lineup of tenor, alto, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Titles include "Utshaka", "Maybe Of Cause", "Moegoe", "Sonke", and "Lakutshona Ilanga". CD
