Ella FitzgeraldElla Sings Broadway (Verve Master Edition) ... CD
Verve, 1962. Used ... $6.99
Ella Fitzgerald sings Broadway – but in a way that makes the tunes completely her own! Marty Paich turns in some great jazzy arrangements for the set – and the tunes are far more swinging than the usual showtunes you might expect – stripped of all their stage-bound drama, and retooled by Paich as these tight little vehicles for Ella's amazing vocals! The album's arguably more expressive than even some of Fitzgerald's previous songbook sessions – even though most work comes from the same American stage mode – titles that include "Hernando's Hideaway", "I Could Have Danced All Night", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Guys and Dolls", "If I Were A Bell", "No Other Love", and "Steam Heat". ✨✧ Billie HolidayBillie Holiday Sings (Verve) ... LP
Verve/Pan Am (Italy), 1952. Sealed (reissue)... $14.99
A pivotal album in the career of Billie Holiday – an early 10" album that marks her return to the recording studios after a bit of a hiatus – working here with a well-picked Verve group that includes Flip Phillips on tenor, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Oscar Peterson on piano! The mix of Phillips and Shavers styles is especially nice – and really bridges the two generations of jazz that Holiday participated in – some older sweet swing touches, and some sharper modern edges from the bop era. Titles include Billie's classic reading of "Easy To Love", plus "Solitude" and "You Turned The Tables On Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(12" pressing, on Pan Am – with bonus tracks,)

✨✧ Chet BakerBaby Breeze ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $4.99
It's the mid 60s, and although Chet's lost the classic sound of his early recordings, he does a pretty nice job in this small group session that has him playing fluegelhorn in place of a recently-stolen trumpet. The sound is nice and compressed, with a tightly restrained feel that works well with his voice on the album's vocal tracks. The group includes Bob James, Frank Strozier, and Hal Galper – and titles include "Baby Breeze", "This Is The Thing", "I Wish You Love", "Pamela's Passion", and "Comin Down". Plus, the CD includes 5 bonus cuts, two previously unissued! (Jazz, Vocalists) CD

Verve, 2018. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A very cool little 10" single – one that features a recent duet on "Fascinating Rhythm" by Tony Bennett with Diana Krall, all with backing from the trio of pianist Bill Charlap! The flipside's maybe even cooler, though – as it features a very early Bennett recording of the tune – done in 1949 with orchestrations by Marty Manning, and originally issued unear the name of Joe Bari! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Dee Dee BridgewaterLive At Yoshi's ... CD
Verve, 1998. Used ... $4.99
Warm, wonderful work from Dee Dee Bridgewater – a relatively straight jazz album, and a hell of a swinger, too! The set's a live date, and has a relaxed, easygoing quality we really love – that soulful, personal feel that Dee Dee picked up strongly in her later years – quite a change from the mode she used on her soul recordings of the 70s. There's definitely a nod here towards older modes of jazz singing too – given that Bridgewater scats a bit at points, almost Ella-esque – but even amidst some familiar tunes, there's a decidedly Dee Dee feel to the whole record, that distinct touch that always makes her records stand out. Instrumentation includes piano and organ from Thierry Eliez, bass from Thomas Bramerie, and drums from Ali Jackson – and titles include "Love For Sale", "Undecided", "Stairway To The Stars", "Sex Machine", "Midnight Sun", and "Cherokee". DeeDee BridgewaterLove & Peace – A Tribute To Horace Silver ... CD
Verve, 1995. Used ... $4.99
A modern classic from Dee Dee Bridgewater – one of her hippest albums of the later years, thanks to a great choice of material, and some really wonderful execution! The album's a beautiful set of straight jazz vocal readings of some of Horace Silver's best compositions, and it also features guest appearances by Silver and Jimmy Smith – both players who still had plenty going on at the time of the sessions. The real strength, though, is Dee Dee – as she proves once and for all that she's one of the best female true jazz singers of this era, capable of rich emotion on ballad tracks, and swinging free vocalese on more uptempo numbers. Titles include "Nica's Dream", "Pretty Eyes", "St. Vitus Dance", "Soulville", "Lonely Woman", and "Tokyo Blues". One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of the past 10 years! CD

Terry CallierWhat Color Is Love ... LP
Cadet/Verve, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Possibly the greatest album ever by the legendary Chicago soul singer Terry Callier! Terry's rich mellow voice is mixed with superb arrangements from the Cadet studio team, with Charles Stepney at the head, and the result is completely sublime. The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. Other tracks include "I'd Rather Be With You", "Just As Long As We're In Love", and "You Don't Care" – and the whole album's a masterpiece beyond compare! (Soul, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Betty CarterLook What I Got ... CD
Verve, 1988. Used ... $8.99
Mellow magic from Betty – one of her first "comeback" albums for Verve, and an excellent set of tunes that still keeps the same feel as her 80s work on her own label. The group on most tunes is a trio – with Benny Green on piano, Michael Bowie on bass, and Winard Harper on drums – but some tracks feature additional tenor from Don Braden, blowing soulfully next to Betty's incredible voice. Tunes skip around with imagination and a sense of soul in places where you'd never expect it – and titles include "Look What I Got", "The Man I Love", "That Sunday That Summer", "All I Got", and "Just Like The Movies". Freddie ColeWaiter Ask The Man To Play Blues ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $19.99
Wonderful work from vocalist Freddie Cole – brother to Nat, and an equally talented singer! Freddie's got a sound that's a bit sadder and more world-weary than Nat – still in kind of a small combo jazzy mode, as would bespeak his roots, but singing with a really honest approach that makes the album the kind of rare male vocal jazz treasure that hardly shows up! Tracks are a great mix of bar songs and lost love numbers – and titles include "Black Night", "Just A Dream", "Rain Is Such A Lonely Sound", "This Life I'm Living", and "Waiter Ask The Man To Play The Blues". A brilliant album that follows on the trend that was begun by Sinatra and Tony Bennett – one that takes strong jazz backings from Count Basie to push a singer past the usual pop format! Sammy didn't always get backing this strong – and the album's got Quincy Jones handling the arrangements for Basie in the same mode the he used on the Sinatra/Basie sides for Reprise. Titles include "The Girl From Ipanema", "She's A Woman", "New York City Blues", "Work Song", and "Blues For Mr Charlie" – and the album even features Sammy doing a bit of tap dancing! The lovely Blossom Dearie runs through a set of hip tunes written by the team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green – two of the more forward-thinking writers working on Broadway during the 50s. The tracks are handled with intimate small group backing – Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums, all next to Blossom's vocals and piano – and the readings of the tunes are much more open-ended than those you might be familiar with, all given the light lively Blossom twist! Titles include "Lucky To Be Me", "Just In Time", "It's Love", "Lonely Town", "Dance Only With Me", "The Party's Over", and "I Like Myself". CD

Verve, 1956. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 24.99
A previously-unreleased live performance by the legendary Ella Fitzgerald – recorded in a small club in Los Angeles during her first few months with the Verve label – but never issued at the time! The quality here is great, and the set captures Ella at a pivotal moment – stepping from the jazz underground to the huge stage of American fame where she'd shine in the 60s and 70s – with an initial stop at higher-class venues like this, where she could craft her vocal skills into a style that was virtually all her own! Make no mistake, Ella's still plenty jazzy and swinging here – but she's also already matured far past the style she was using at Decca just a few short years before – working with accompaniment from a trio that includes Don Abney on piano, Vernon Alley on bass, and Frank Capp on drums. 2LP set presents material from both the first and second set of the performance – 21 tracks in all – and titles include "Why Don't You Do Right", "S Wonderful", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "It All Depends On You", "Little Boy", "Airmail Special", "Bernie's Tune", "How High The Moon", and "Cry Me A River". A later entry in Ella's Songbook series for Verve – but a great one too, thanks to some strong arrangements from Nelson Riddle! Riddle's working here at a level that he brought to his earlier sessions with Frank Sinatra – one that colors in the tunes with just the right amount of shadings needed for each different composition, but which also still leaves plenty of space for the vocalist to dominate the recordings. Ella's in fine form throughout – swinging easily on the more upbeat numbers, but also balancing things out with some thoughtful ballad work that stands as some of her best of the 60s. Verve/Hip-O Select, 1961/1962. Used 4 CDs ... $34.99
Massive music from Ella Fitzgerald – 4CDs worth of sublime small group recordings – all of them live, and all of them previously unissued! The set follows the same format of the Verve Ella In Hollywood album – recorded in a small club setting, with combo backing that really lets Fitzgerald open up and swing – inflecting the tunes with the kind of warmth and spontaneity that she brought to her famous live performances of the time – which were almost always more compelling than her studio sides, no matter how great those were too! The first 3CDs feature material from two weeks' worth of recording in May of 1961 – with backing from Jim Hall on guitar, Lou Levy on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – and CD four features Ella returning to Hollywood for two more nights in 1962, with trio backing from Paul Smith on piano, Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. There's a massive 77 tracks in all – handsomely package in a hardcover 7" square book – which also features beautiful color pages inside, lots of notes on the music, and design that's every bit as groovy as the old albums on Verve. Titles include "Joe Williams' Blues", "It's De-Lovely", "Lorelei", "I Can't Get Started", "Round Midnight", "Perdido", "Little White Lies", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Across The Alley From The Alamo", "Love For Sale", "Exactly Like You", "Mack The Knife", "Teach Me Tonight", "My Kind Of Boy", "It Had To Be You", "Hard Hearted Hannah", "All Of Me", and "Too Darn Hot/Ella's Twist". And, in case you're wondering, there's almost no repetition in the set at all – all discreet, unique tunes – not just the sort of rehash you might get in other concert box sets of this nature! CD

A set that's maybe even nicer than the Ella & Louis work together on Porgy & Bess – given that backing is by the trio of Oscar Peterson, which gives the whole thing a nicely understated charm – at a level that really lets the charms of the duo shine through! (Jazz, Vocalists) CD

Verve, 1958. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A nice one from Ella – and a good move past the Songbooks mode that sometimes dogged her years on Verve a bit too much! This set has Ella singing to light arrangements by Frank DeVol – nothing fancy, but a good set of tunes that are perfect for the lovely style that Ella was hitting back in the 50s. Tracks are short, uncomplicated, and very nicely swinging – even in the gentler moments – with titles that include "Let's Fall In Love", "Sweet & Lovely", "Moonlight Serenade", "I Remember You", and "East Of The Sun". ✨✧ George & Ira Gershwin/Fred Astaire/Audrey HepburnFunny Face ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of the strangest moments of success in the early years of Verve Records – and one of the label's few soundtracks too! The album's one that cleverly combines the core Verve jazz approach with some larger orchestrations by Adolph Deutsche – in a set of tunes based around the compositions of George and Ira Gershwin, used in a new catalog musical that starred Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, and Kay Thompson! The link to the music of the Gershwins is right up there with the important Songbook projects Verve was doing at the time – and of course, Fred Astaire recorded some great material for the label in the 50s too – reminding the world that he could be a pretty great singer when he wanted, even away from film. Fred's maybe the biggest attraction here, as are some of the new tunes added in by Roger Edens and Leonard Gershe – and titles include "Funny Face", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Clap Yo Hands", "S'Wonderful", "Think Pink", "Bonjour Paris", "Let's Kiss & Make Up", and "He Loves & She Loves". Verve, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
A great album from Astrud Gilberto – one that has her pushing past the simple bossa of early years, running through a range of 60s styles that all sound great – really opening up, finding new confidence in her vocals, and bridging a few different musical worlds in the process! There's still plenty of Brazilian tunes in the mix – like "Oba, Oba", "Canoeiro", "Bossa Na Praia", "Nao Bate O Corocao", and Marcos Valle's great "The Face I Love" – and the album also features great versions of "Misty Roses", "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice", and "Stay". Backings are by Deodato and Don Sebesky – and the album's a dreamy 60s pop delight! (Brazil, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Astrud GilbertoI Haven't Got Anything Better To Do ... LP
Verve, 1970. Very Good- ... $19.99
One of the darkest albums ever recorded by Astrud Gilberto – her 60s last session for Verve Records, and a batch of beautifully moody tunes throughout! Arrangements are by Albert Gorgoni, who'd handled Gilberto's previous September 69 album – but the style here is a bit mellower, a bit sadder – touched with more adult themes of love, life, and loss – and very much in keeping with Astrud's tear-stained image on the cover! There's a sound here that almost mixes Gilberto's earlier bossa with the more baroque modes of Scott Walker at the end of the 60s – and as with Scott Walker's classic solo sets, the album shows a side of Astrud's talents that we never would have expected a few years earlier! Titles include "Wailing Of The Willow", "Where's The Love", "Wee Small Hours", "If", "Without Him", "Trains & Boats & Planes", "The Sea Is My Soil", and "Didn't We?". Verve, 1965. Near Mint- ... $16.99
One of the moodiest Verve albums from Astrud Gilberto – a set that has some surprising arrangements by Gil Evans – working here on one of his few 60s dates with a singer! Astrud's blue-tinged vocals work perfectly with Evans' backdrops – and Al Cohn also takes over the helm on two of the album's tracks, but still does a very good job of keeping the groove. There's a nice mix of sadness and lightness in the set – and titles include a wonderful version of "Berimbau" that actually features berimbau playing by Dom Um Romao, a great take on "El Preciso Aprender A Ser So" with English lyrics, and the titles "Bim Bom", "Lugar Bonito", "Frevo", and "Once Upon A Summertime". One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that bring out an emotional side of Astrud that you don't always get on other LPs. The track list is excellent, and includes some of her best tracks for Verve, like "Gentle Rain", "Non Stop To Brazil", "Fly Me To The Moon", "O Ganso", and "Aruanda". Astrud Gilberto & Walter WanderleyDelirio (aka Certain Smile, Certain Sadness) ... LP
Verve (Mexico), 1966. Very Good- ... $14.99
Kind of a dream combination in one little album – especially if you dig breezy bossa from the 60s! Back in 1966, Verve Records got the great idea of teaming up its (then) biggest Brazilian imports – vocalist Astrud Gilberto and organist Walter Wanderley – both of whom were selling plenty at the time! Astrud's lovely vocals are matched beautifully with the lean, rhythmic bossa grooves of Wanderley's trio – and the result is a record that's near-perfect in execution. Most of the tracks are quite short, as is the record itself – but it's a perfectly concentrated dose of the Verve bossa sound at its best, with tracks that include "Portuguese Washerwoman", "Tu Meu Delirio", "A Certain Smile", "Call Me", "Here's That Rainy Day", "A Certain Sadness", "It's A Lovely Day Today", and a vocal version of Wanderley's big hit "Summer Samba", redone here as "So Nice"! Verve/Wax Time, 1959. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Billie Holiday's last recording – and a really beautiful little set that's a perfect cap to her all-too-short career! The album's got a style that's similar to the better-known Lady In Satin album – with backings from Ray Ellis that are a bit more lush than those used during the Verve years, but which also provide some much-needed focus to the music too – a quality that's still strongly jazz-based, but almost seem to refresh Holiday's singing a bit. Make no mistake, Billie's definitely in her later years here – but that also makes for an instantly heartbreaking quality too – a mode that's distinctly Holiday all the way through, with echoes of her hardship throughout most of the tunes. Soloists include Gene Quill on alto, Sweets Edison on trumpet, and Jimmy Cleveland on trombone – and titles include "All The Way", "Don't Worry 'Bout Me", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Deed I Do", and "All Of You". A&M/Verve, 1968. Used ... $5.99
One of our favorite albums by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – a perfect bridge between the simple pop of earlier records, and the group's expanding sound as the 70s approached! The warmly glowing Brasil 66 style is still very strongly in place, but the music here is all a bit hipper – tunes that show the growing sophistication of Brazilian music in the post-bossa years – picked up on by Sergio, and reworked for a larger audience in the US! The record's got some incredibly wonderful material – including a sublime cover of "Upa Neguinho", plus versions of "Casa Forte", "Canto Triste", "Lapinha", and "Laia Ladaia", a song that's a perfect fit for the group's unique style! A later tribute to Clifford Brown from Helen Merrill – the vocalist who worked famously with the late trumpeter in the 50s! The feel here is quite different than the Merrill/Brown pairings for Emarcy, but equally dark throughout – handled in a way that often has Merrill's vocals offset by trumpet work from players who include Lew Soloff, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, and Wallace Roney – each of whom add a slightly different flavor to the set, but are also clearly drawing strong inspiration from Brown. Torrie Zito handled arrangements, with that easygoing, mature quality that you'd expect – and rhythm is from the trio of Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Tracks include "Daahoud", "Born To Be Blue", "Your Eyes", "Brownie", "Don't Explain", "Largo", "I Remember Clifford", "Memories Of You", and "Joy Spring". CD

Really nice work from Andrea Motis – a singer who's way most than just a pretty face handling a few Brazilian tunes – a she also works here as an instrumentalist, blowing both trumpet and soprano sax, in a way that really adds a lot to the record! The rhythms and most of the instrumentation are what you might expect – strongly influenced by Brazilian styles, both samba and bossa, and maybe a bit of choro too – with lots of percussion, guitar in the rhythms, and bits of clarinet and tenor sax from time to time. But Andrea's performance really changes things up in a nice way – partly because she's got a vivid style on the more upbeat numbers, really able to move up and down her range – and also because she can slide into an instrumental solo without ever seeming to miss a beat. The record features larger orchestral backings on most tracks – never too heavy, but with light strings that really help Nico depart from the sound of her work with The Velvet Underground. This style adds a new level of sophistication to her vocals, and really helps in her interpretation of the unusual material culled for the set – tunes that include a few key numbers by old partners in The Velvets, as well as some especially great tracks by a young Jackson Browne – a romantic interest of Nico at the time! The whole thing's incredible – on a par with the best from Scott Walker during the same stretch, although very different overall – and a key entry in the darker side of the non-hippie end of the 60s spectrum. One of the grooviest Verve albums of all time – a rare American session from Brazilian legend Marcos Valle – and his only US album to feature vocals! The album's even dreamier than Valle's early bossa sides from Brazil – and the setting has some nice Verve-like touches from Deodato – who handled the arrangements, and brings a nicely airy, nicely jazzy style to the record. Most tunes are sung as duets with his lovely wife Anamaria – made famous by the album's landmark groover "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" – an English-language version of Valle's earlier "Os Grilos". Other titles are all great too – and sport English lyrics that hardly ever got much exposure. In addition to the great "Crickets Sing For Anamaria", other titles include "The Face I Love", "She Told Me She Told Me", "Pepino Beach", "Chup Chup I Got Away", and "Batucada". Sarah VaughanSings The Mancini Songbook ... CD
Mercury/Verve, 1964. Used ... $3.99
Sarah Vaughan and Henry Mancini – a surprising combination, and one that's served up in an equally surprising style! The set was cut at the height of Mancini's 60s popularity, but the overall feel is quite different than his groovy soundtracks – and much more in the mature, boozy style that Vaughan was using at the time. Arrangers are a varied lot – the set includes work by Bob James, Frank Foster, Bill Holman, and Billy Byers – which gives the tunes a nice sense of variety, too – not the usual "in the mode of" record you might get from a set focused on a single composer. There's a few standout groovers – including a great vocal version of "Peter Gunn" – but most things are nice and mellow, and titles include "Dear Heart", "Charade", "Slow Hot Wind", "Mr Lucky", "It Had Better Be Tonight", and "How Soon". Dinah WashingtonSwingin Miss D (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EmArcy/Verve, Late 50s. Used ... $2.99
Swingin is right – as Dinah lets go with Quincy Jones orchestra, singing strong and hard in a set that's one of her best jazz sides from the 50s! Quincy knows how to mix just the right doses of straight jazz and tighter vocal arrangements – and Dinah's very comfortably at home in the setting, stretching out with a great sense of soul that really stands out. The album's an early example of Jones' great ability to work with singers – and titles include "I'll Close My Eyes", "Perdido", "Caravan", "You're Crying", "They Didn't Believe Me", "But Not For Me", and "Somebody Loves Me". ✨✧ Lizz WrightDreaming Wide Awake ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $4.99
The second outing from vocalist Lizz Wright – done in the same sweetly folksy style as her debut, but in a way that seems to have even more of a focus overall. The backing on the set is especially nice – mostly just spare keyboards, bass, and drums, plus some great work on acoustic guitar by Chris Bruce – and titles include versions of "A Taste Of Honey", "Stop", "Old Man", "Wake Up Little Sparrow", and "I'm Confessin" – plus the originals "Hit The Ground", "Trouble", and "Dreaming Wide Awake". ✨✧ Lizz WrightOrchard ... CD
Verve, 2008. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the most deeply soulful sets we've ever heard from singer Lizz Wright – a record that has an even more acoustic feel than before, which really opens up the sound nicely! Given the depth of Wright's vocals, this shift is a really great move – one that lets her really stand out front of the backings and push things strongly with her well-noted dynamic range. Instrumentation is usually acoustic guitar, percussion, and a bit of piano – and although there's also some keyboards listed in the lineup, these are definitely kept on the back-burner to preserve the acoustic soul of the set. Titles include "Another Angel", "Hey Mann", "I Idolize You", "My Heart", "Coming Home", "Thank You", "Song For Mia", and "Strange". (Neo Soul, Vocalists) CD

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla At Duke's Place ... CD
Verve, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the structure of the set, and Ella handling vocals. The tunes are mostly Ellington classics, but they provide a nice change of pace for the Fitzgerald of the 60s – taking Ella into more sophisticated territory on some darker themes that really surprised us. Players are all of the Ellington stalwarts of the time – and titles include "Imagine My Frustration", "Duke's Place", "What Am I Here For", "Azure", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Passion Flower", and "Something To Live For". ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldHello Dolly! ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A definite shot at the pop market by Ella Fitzgerald – quite possibly recorded as a follow-up to the 60s success of former singing partner Louis Armstrong, who's referenced nicely in Ella's rendition of the title hit! The first 4 tracks on the set were done in the UK, under the leadership of arranger Johnny Spence – and the remaining 8 were done back on Ella's home turf, with familiar backings by Frank DeVol, and an overall sound that's a bit more lush than those on the British numbers. Includes a hit reading of "Can't Buy Me Love", plus "Hello Dolly", "The Sweetest Sounds", "My Man", "Volare", "The Thrill Is Gone", "How High The Moon", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". CD
