✨✧ Slim GaillardLaughing In Rhythm – Best Of The Verve Years ... CD
Verve, 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Insanely great work from Slim Gaillard, the self-styled LA hipster who rose to prominence in the wartime blues and jazz scene, and who continued to wow audiences for years with his unique blend of hipster jazz! This CD features some of Slim's best work – recorded for Verve in the 50s, and painfully unavailable for years. Slim sings in a voice that's all his own – mixing bluesy crooning with scatting and plenty of talking in his own language of "vout". Consider him a west coast version of Babs Gonzales, and you've got part of the picture – but you'll need this set to fill in all the spaces. Titles include "You Goofed", "Arabian Boogie", "Tip Light", "Serenade To A Poodle", "Babalu Orooney", "Laughing In Rhythm", "Chicken Rhythm", and the complete "Opera In Vout". CD

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldComplete Piano Duets ... CD
Verve, 1950s/1976. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful way to hear the genius of Ella Fitzgerald at its best – as the set features all tracks that just have the first lady of jazz singing alongside a piano – spare, open, and in a way that really lets you get all all the care and nuance that Ella can bring to a tune! Most of the recordings here are from the 50s – quite unusual for the time – and they're matched with one more set of duets that Ella Recorded for Pablo Records in the 70s, at a time when she was exploring more intimate modes in a really great way. There's a host of great surprises along the way – and the set begins with 8 tracks from the album Ella Sings Gershwin, with Ellis Larkins on piano – then moves to another Decca duet with Larkins on the album Songs In A Mellow Mood. The set follows with two spare numbers from the Songbook recordings for Verve – one with Oscar Peterson on piano, one with Paul Smith. Then, Smith returns on another set of 13 tracks taken from the rare Let No Man Write My Epitaph album for Verve – then adds in a spare duet with Tommy Flanagan from the 1964 A Juan Les Pins album – before ending with the full set list from the wonderful Ella & Oscar album from 1976 – 7 more duets with Oscar Peterson on piano. Verve, 1964. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
A hugely expanded version of the classic double live album by Ella Fitzgerald – featuring a total of 48 tracks in all, recorded over 2 nights at a French jazz festival in 1964, with backing by a group that includes Roy Eldridge and Tommy Flanagan. More than half of the set appears to be previously unissued – and the whole thing's packaged in a wonderful wraparound cover, with great art and notes, and new remastering on the CD. Titles include "Day In Day Out", "Just A Sittin & A Rockin", "People", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Boy From Ipanema", "The Cricket Song", "Perdido", "Summertime", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "I Love Being Here With You", "Goody Goody", "Cutie Pants", and "Mack The Knife". Astrud GilbertoI Haven't Got Anything Better To Do ... LP
Verve, 1970. Very Good+ ... $29.99
One of the darkest albums ever recorded by Astrud Gilberto – her 60s last session for Verve Records, and a batch of beautifully moody tunes throughout! Arrangements are by Albert Gorgoni, who'd handled Gilberto's previous September 69 album – but the style here is a bit mellower, a bit sadder – touched with more adult themes of love, life, and loss – and very much in keeping with Astrud's tear-stained image on the cover! There's a sound here that almost mixes Gilberto's earlier bossa with the more baroque modes of Scott Walker at the end of the 60s – and as with Scott Walker's classic solo sets, the album shows a side of Astrud's talents that we never would have expected a few years earlier! Titles include "Wailing Of The Willow", "Where's The Love", "Wee Small Hours", "If", "Without Him", "Trains & Boats & Planes", "The Sea Is My Soil", and "Didn't We?". Verve, 1965. Very Good- ... $9.99
One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that bring out an emotional side of Astrud that you don't always get on other LPs. The track list is excellent, and includes some of her best tracks for Verve, like "Gentle Rain", "Non Stop To Brazil", "Fly Me To The Moon", "O Ganso", and "Aruanda". Not to be passed up, and one that we never tire of listening to! (Brazil, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Jazzy Verve-y grooves by this fab duo, with arrangements by Charles Calello and Claus Ogerman that are similar to those used on the pair's Grass album, but with a bit less pop psychedelia thrown into the mix. Tracks are groovy pop stuff, like "Norweigian Wood", and "The Word" – plus more obscure numbers, like "Changes", "Counting", and "Bye Bye". Jackie & RoyLovesick ... LP
Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $3.99
Wonderfully groovy work from the team of Jackie Cain & Roy Kral – a set that has the pair moving into much hipper modes for the 60s, and really taking off from the greatness of earlier records! Backing is still by Roy's core trio, with acoustic piano at the lead – but the addition of electric bass to the lineup really helps the tunes step along nicely – hitting a groove not heard before from Jackie & Roy, with results that are completely sublime! There's a definite bossa influence that comes into some of the best tracks – a skipping, lilting approach to rhythm that's made even better by the unique dual vocals of the team, especially when they're singing wordlessly. But even when lyrical vocals are part of the mix, the sound is still great too – and Jackie & Roy have a way of bringing charm to a tune that few other singers can touch! Titles include "Lovesick", "A Big Beautiful Ball", "You Really Started Something", "Let's Begin", "Mimosa & Me", "Corcovado", "Samba Triste", and "The World Is Your Balloon". LP, Vinyl record album

Carmen McRaeBirds Of A Feather (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve, 1958. Used ... $6.99
A gimmicky album – but a nice one! Carmen sings a set of "bird-related" songs – like "Skylark", "Bob White", "Flamingo", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "Baltimore Oriole" – and while the idea of such a record might be painful, it's made surprisingly great thanks to some help from arranger Ralph Burns! Burns backs Carmen with some strong mid-size combos, and comes up with some shimmering approaches to the songs that get past the hokier style they might have, and suits them perfectly to Carmen's deeply soulful vocals. Andrea MotisDo Ouro Lado Do Azul ... CD
Verve (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
Really nice work from Andrea Motis – a singer who's way most than just a pretty face handling a few Brazilian tunes – a she also works here as an instrumentalist, blowing both trumpet and soprano sax, in a way that really adds a lot to the record! The rhythms and most of the instrumentation are what you might expect – strongly influenced by Brazilian styles, both samba and bossa, and maybe a bit of choro too – with lots of percussion, guitar in the rhythms, and bits of clarinet and tenor sax from time to time. But Andrea's performance really changes things up in a nice way – partly because she's got a vivid style on the more upbeat numbers, really able to move up and down her range – and also because she can slide into an instrumental solo without ever seeming to miss a beat. Titles include "Brisa", "Sense Pressa", "Sombra De La", "Saudades Da Guanabara", "Jo Vinc", "Baiao De Quatro Toques", "Record De Nit", and "Choro De Baile". CD

A striking session for Anita O'Day – and a refreshing change from her work of the 50s! This one has Anita singing with arrangements by Gary McFarland, a mix of easy jazz styles that show a more sophisticated side to her voice – a bit more careful than before, with more hidden in the background, and less of the in your face style of years past. Buddy Bregman's doing the arrangements on this one – and he brings a great jazzy flair to the backings, helping Anita O'Day open up in her most dynamic mode! The whole set swings nicely, but without any sort of hoke – and Bregman manages to highlight specific instruments in the arrangements in different ways on each tune – creating a nice sense of variety that really keeps things fresh. ✨✧ Nina SimoneFodder On My Wings ... CD
Carrere/Verve, 1982. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
An overlooked album from the legendary Nina Simone – recorded in Paris in the early 80s, and not circulated as much as some of her records from the 60s and 70s – but every bit as compelling in its own sort of way! Nina's working here with a greater array of global elements than on previous recordings – very much in that way that the French scene was embracing sounds from the Caribbean and African cultures in these post-colonial years, and using them to forge a wealth of wonderful new styles in the studios of Paris. The approach is still jazz-based, but with lots of earthy percussion, including some handled by Nina with her own piano work – a mode that's not foisted on Simone by another producer, but arranged and conceived by the lady herself. Lyrics are in French and English, and titles include "I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive", "They Took My Hand", "Stop", "Liberian Calypso", "Vous Etes SEuls Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous", "Fodder In Her Wings", "Thandewye", "Heaven Belongs To You", and "Le Peuple En Suisse". Verve/Elemental (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the grooviest Verve albums of all time – a rare American session from Brazilian legend Marcos Valle – and his only US album to feature vocals! The album's even dreamier than Valle's early bossa sides from Brazil – and the setting has some nice Verve-like touches from Deodato – who handled the arrangements, and brings a nicely airy, nicely jazzy style to the record. Most tunes are sung as duets with his lovely wife Anamaria – made famous by the album's landmark groover "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" – an English-language version of Valle's earlier "Os Grilos". Other titles are all great too – and sport English lyrics that hardly ever got much exposure. In addition to the great "Crickets Sing For Anamaria", other titles include "The Face I Love", "She Told Me She Told Me", "Pepino Beach", "Chup Chup I Got Away", and "Batucada". A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the structure of the set, and Ella handling vocals. The tunes are mostly Ellington classics, but they provide a nice change of pace for the Fitzgerald of the 60s – taking Ella into more sophisticated territory on some darker themes that really surprised us. Players are all of the Ellington stalwarts of the time – and titles include "Imagine My Frustration", "Duke's Place", "What Am I Here For", "Azure", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Passion Flower", and "Something To Live For". ✨✧ Astrud Gilberto & Walter WanderleyDelirio (aka Certain Smile, Certain Sadness) ... LP
Verve (Mexico), 1966. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Kind of a dream combination in one little album – especially if you dig breezy bossa from the 60s! Back in 1966, Verve Records got the great idea of teaming up its (then) biggest Brazilian imports – vocalist Astrud Gilberto and organist Walter Wanderley – both of whom were selling plenty at the time! Astrud's lovely vocals are matched beautifully with the lean, rhythmic bossa grooves of Wanderley's trio – and the result is a record that's near-perfect in execution. Most of the tracks are quite short, as is the record itself – but it's a perfectly concentrated dose of the Verve bossa sound at its best, with tracks that include "Portuguese Washerwoman", "Tu Meu Delirio", "A Certain Smile", "Call Me", "Here's That Rainy Day", "A Certain Sadness", "It's A Lovely Day Today", and a vocal version of Wanderley's big hit "Summer Samba", redone here as "So Nice"! A newly-discovered live set from Ella Fitzgerald – recorded at the Shrine Auditorium in LA, a week before the famous Ella At Zardi's set! Producer Norman Granz was already great at capturing an intimate artist in a live setting – as evidenced by his famous Jazz At The Philharmonic Recordings – and he does a great job here with Ella, too – who steps out swinging, with some nice small combo backings. Granz speaks at the end of the set – and titles include "Joe Williams' Blues", "And The Angels Sing", "Air Mail Special", "Cry Me A River", "Glad To Be Unhappy", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". Verve, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A very lively, very swinging little set from Ella Fitzgerald – recorded in Germany, the site of more than one great live date from her over the years – and done in a freewheeling style that makes the record a real standout in her 60s catalog! Backing is only by a trio – Tommy Flanagan piano, Keeter Betts bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – but the grooves are full enough to almost come from a big band, especially when mixed with the dynamic styles of Ella's vocals! Most tunes are older standards, but there's a few groovier 60s numbers as well – and in a way, the record's a bit of a transition from Fitzgerald's older Verve modes, and some of the hipper work she'd do for MPS and Warner at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Walk Right In", "Old Black Magic", "Here's That Rainy Day", "The Boy From Ipanema", and a great take on Arnett Cobb's "Smooth Sailing". Verve, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A definite shot at the pop market by Ella Fitzgerald – quite possibly recorded as a follow-up to the 60s success of former singing partner Louis Armstrong, who's referenced nicely in Ella's rendition of the title hit! The first 4 tracks on the set were done in the UK, under the leadership of arranger Johnny Spence – and the remaining 8 were done back on Ella's home turf, with familiar backings by Frank DeVol, and an overall sound that's a bit more lush than those on the British numbers. Includes a hit reading of "Can't Buy Me Love", plus "Hello Dolly", "The Sweetest Sounds", "My Man", "Volare", "The Thrill Is Gone", "How High The Moon", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". A later entry in Ella's Songbook series for Verve – but a great one too, thanks to some strong arrangements from Nelson Riddle! Riddle's working here at a level that he brought to his earlier sessions with Frank Sinatra – one that colors in the tunes with just the right amount of shadings needed for each different composition, but which also still leaves plenty of space for the vocalist to dominate the recordings. Ella's in fine form throughout – swinging easily on the more upbeat numbers, but also balancing things out with some thoughtful ballad work that stands as some of her best of the 60s. Titles include "Let's Begin", "Remind Me", "Yesterdays", "Why Was I Born", "She Didn't Say Yes", and "You Couldn't Be Cuter". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A superstar performance from the Antibes jazz festival at Cote D'Azur – one that features Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington sharing the stage, in a concert that was also recorded for a film! Most numbers here feature the full Ellington orchestra backing Ella up – but a few other numbers feature just backings from a trio with Jimmy Jones on piano and Grady Tate on drums. Duke and Ella trade the spotlight nicely – and Fitzgerald only sings on about half of the set, numbers that include "Mack The Knife", "The More I See You", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Jazz Samba", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "Going Out Of My Head". Ellington's heard on other instrumental performances – some of which are a bit more upbeat and unbridled than usual – almost in a Basie mode. These tunes include "Trombonio Bustosolssimo", "Diminuendo In Blue & Blow By Blow", "The Old Circus Train Turn Around Blues", and "The Matador". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nina SimoneFodder On My Wings ... LP
Carrere/Verve, 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Terry CallierWhat Color Is Love ... LP
Cadet/Verve, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Possibly the greatest album ever by the legendary Chicago soul singer Terry Callier! Terry's rich mellow voice is mixed with superb arrangements from the Cadet studio team, with Charles Stepney at the head, and the result is completely sublime. The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. Other tracks include "I'd Rather Be With You", "Just As Long As We're In Love", and "You Don't Care" – and the whole album's a masterpiece beyond compare! (Soul, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records of the 60s – and a sublime debut from Nico, sounding fresher and less dreary here than on many of her later sides – although still pretty chilling overall! The record features larger orchestral backings on most tracks – never too heavy, but with light strings that really help Nico depart from the sound of her work with The Velvet Underground. This style adds a new level of sophistication to her vocals, and really helps in her interpretation of the unusual material culled for the set – tunes that include a few key numbers by old partners in The Velvets, as well as some especially great tracks by a young Jackson Browne – a romantic interest of Nico at the time! The whole thing's incredible – on a par with the best from Scott Walker during the same stretch, although very different overall – and a key entry in the darker side of the non-hippie end of the 60s spectrum. Titles include "These Days", "It Was A Pleasure Then", "Eulogy To Lenny Bruce", and the incredible title cut, "Chelsea Girls". Fantastic! (Rock, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Buddy RichBuddy Rich Sings Johnny Mercer ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the few rare vocal sessions recorded by Buddy Rich – and a surprisingly swinging album that makes us wonder why he didn't record more like this! Arrangements are by Buddy Bregman, who was always the great man at Verve for backing less-confident singers – and unlike other Buddy Rich vocal records, which have a mostly gentle, almost Chet Baker-like quality, this one's got a lot more punch and some of the dynamism you'd expect from Rich's fame in jazz! Overall, there's a bit of a short dynamic range to Buddy's singing – but he more than makes up for that with a slightly earthy quality that we really like – a mode that clearly has him wanting to sing, pushing his voice, and bringing a sense of earnestness to these tunes that we really like. Titles include "Day In Day Out", "Goody Goody", "Out Of This World", "One For My Baby", "Fools Rush In", "Dream", and "Travlin Light". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

One of the moodiest Verve albums from Astrud Gilberto – a set that has some surprising arrangements by Gil Evans – working here on one of his few 60s dates with a singer! Astrud's blue-tinged vocals work perfectly with Evans' backdrops – and Al Cohn also takes over the helm on two of the album's tracks, but still does a very good job of keeping the groove. There's a nice mix of sadness and lightness in the set – and titles include a wonderful version of "Berimbau" that actually features berimbau playing by Dom Um Romao, a great take on "El Preciso Aprender A Ser So" with English lyrics, and the titles "Bim Bom", "Lugar Bonito", "Frevo", and "Once Upon A Summertime". Quite an interesting little record from Rose "Chi Chi" Murphy – a singer with a really unique style! For the session, Rose accompanies herself on piano – playing in a lightly skipping mode that's a great pairing with her breezy, bird-like vocals. The style's a bit like Blossom Dearie, but not nearly as controlled – as Rose often breaks into a "chi chi" call, and claps along with the tunes out of enthusiasm – making for a style that's also got a bit of Slim Gaillard in the mix! The rest of the group includes Willie Smith on alto, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Alvin Stoller on drums – and titles include "Mr Wonderful", "Sympathetic Little Star", "Watcha Gonna Lose", "If You Were Only Mine", "Coquette", and "By The Waters Of Minnetonka". A groovy little vocal group with a swinging 50s sound – working here with some great jazzy arrangements from trombonist Kai Winding! The style of the set prefaces Winding's pop/jazz sides for Verve in the mid 60s – but has a sound that's somewhat similar – with lead vocals by the male/female Axidentals group, and some trombone-based jazzy backings that showcase Winding's horn amidst a larger brass section. There's a great poppy punch to these tunes – and the Axidentals themselves can be credited for some extremely inventive vocal arrangements at times – in styles that go way beyond those of conventional groups of the period, in a mode that reminds us of some of the work by the Kirby Stone Four or the John LaSalle Quartet. A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key Gershwin compositions from the 20s and 30s, redone here with a moody, mellow, jazz-based approach – one that unlocks even more darkness in these tunes than you might expect! Instrumentation is by a number of different small groups – assemblages of players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Most on clarinet, Herbie Mann on flute, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al Cohn on tenor, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all working with arrangements by Sharon, Ray Ellis, and Stan Free. The album features a whopping 32 titles in all – with tracks that include "A Foggy Day", "Strike Up The Band", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Little Jazzbird", "My One & Only", "That Certain Feeling", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Liza", "Soon", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now". A great look at the earliest years of the lovely Blossom Dearie – and a set that also features a surprising amount of work from reedman Bobby Jaspar, who was making big waves on the Paris jazz scene at the same time the young Blossom was living in France! CD1 features the pair together – a lovely set of duos with Bobby on flute and Blossom on piano, pulled from a rare 7" EP – which is then followed by a set of piano instrumentals lead by Dearie, from the album Jazz Sweet – a French-only release! The CD then follows with Blossom's great vocal jazz group The Blues Stars Of France – with tracks from both their first album and their rare EP – great vocal harmony numbers of bebop tunes. CD2 features Blossom's famous self-titled album for Verve – a great American debut – but then follows with lots more rare material, including a Blue Stars 7" single, a rare Dave Lambert & Buddy Stewart 78rpm single, and even other vocal tracks by Annie Ross and King Pleasure. CD3 mostly features material that focuses on the talents of Bobby Jaspar on flute – some under his own leadership, plus more with other artists and groups, including work with singer Helen Merrill, guitarist Rene Thomas, and trombonist JJ Johnson. 75 tracks in all – and a booklet of notes! A great range of work from Rose Murphy – one of the most unique talents of her generation, and an artist with a style that's really unlike anyone else we can think of! At one level, Murphy's a great pianist – ala Hadda Brooks – but she's also got a high range of singing, with vocals that are more in the light upper reaches hit by Blossom Dearie – which makes for quite a contrast to her work on the keys! Then there's also her very rhythmic way of singing, which often has some playful inflections – most notably the use of the "chee chee" or "chi chi" phrase, which comes through on a fair bit of the tunes here. The package is the first strong career overview we've ever seen of Murphy's music – and includes tracks recorded for the RCA, Majestic, Mercury, Verve, and Decca labels – with 28 tracks that include "By The Waters Of Minnetonka", "You Were Meant For Me", "Time On My Hands", "Ceceila", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Rose Of The Rio Grande", "Mm Mm Good", "Busy Line", "A Little Bird Told Me", and "The Little Red Monkey".
