✨✧ Burt Bacharach & OthersDream Big – The First Decade Of Songs (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection, and one that will definitely blow your mind if you only know the Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick collaborations, or some of Burt's solo albums on his own! Bacharach started out young and early, and was effortlessly penning pop songs for singers in a variety of styles – working as part of that songwriting scene in New York that was always hustling, and able to get a surprising amount of songs into the hands of up-and-coming singers of the time! The scope of this set is stunning – as the first 3CDs feature 95 tracks penned by the young Bacharach himself – sung by a variety of artists who include The Exotics, Etta James, Gene McDaniels, Paul Evans, Marlene Dietrich, Tommy Sands, The Drifters, Frankie Avalon, The Four Coins, Marty Robbins, Sonny James, Jack Jones, Jo Stafford, Bob Manny, and many others. CD4 21 more tracks that showcase unusual but important influences on Burt's compositional style – including work by Henry Cowell, Alban Berg, Leonard Bernstein, Gill Evans, and Tadd Dameron. CD

✨✧ Chet BakerChet Baker Sings ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1954. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe one of the greatest albums of Chet Baker vocal material you could ever hope to buy – a fantastic testament of the young talent at the top of his game – effortlessly moving between well-conceived trumpet solos and those fantastic vocals that were unlike any other singer at the time! Half the album was recorded live, the other half in the studio, but there's a very unified vibe to the whole thing – and the great Russ Freeman plays piano on both tracks, and a bit of celeste at a few points too. Titles include "That Old Feeling", "Look For The Silver Lining", "There Will Be Another You", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "My Buddy", "My Funny Valentine", and "I Get Along Without You Very Well". Every track is great, and these are the original vocal recordings that put Chet on the map! (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, half split bottom seam, some surface wear and aging.)

Nat King ColeKing Cole Trio With Lester Young & Red Callender ... LP
Score, Late 40s. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
A great collection of bop sides from 40s LA – tracks that ostensibly feature Cole on piano, jamming with Lester Young on tenor and Red Callender on bass! Oddly, no other players are listed in the notes – even though there's clearly a drummer and trumpeter on the session – so it's a bit hard to date the material, or figure out the actual source of the work. But we can say that Young's tone alone is more than worth the price of admission – beautifully firm and strong – blown in a way that rivals his best early performances for Verve, but perhaps even with a bit more grit and soul. Titles include "SM Blues", "Jammin With Lester", "Can't Get Started", "Body & Soul", and "Indiana". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy maroon label pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a split spine.)

✨✧ Sammy Davis JrStarring Sammy Davis Jr ... LP
Decca, 1955. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The first album ever released by Sammy Davis Jr – a great debut for Decca Records, filled with a range of tunes that beautifully sum up his many talents! The Sam heard here is a fair bit straighter than the Sammy D of later Ratpack years – an amazing young singer with a really incredible voice – one that's just perfect for mellow ballads or more upbeat, swinging numbers. Backings are by Mort Stevens, Sy Oliver, and Joseph Gershenson – often with a hint of jazz, but usually with a fuller, more dramatic approach that matches the incredible vocal range of the young Davis. Titles include "And This Is My Beloved", "Lonesome Road", "Hey There", "My Funny Valentine", "Spoken For", "Birth Of The Blues", and "Stan Up & Fight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nina SimoneNina Simone – The Montreux Years ... CD
BMG, Late 60s/1970s/1980s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great addition to the Nina Simone catalog – material recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival on a number of different dates – all very different performances that really show the legendary singer at the top of her game! The setting shifts here from date to date – the package features shows from 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987, and 1990 – with early material that features a full group with Henry Young on guitar and Sam Waymon on organ, plus later sets that feature a trio, a duo with harmonica player Claude Nobs, a solo piano/vocal date, and a final set with guitar, vibes, and keyboards. As with other live performances, Nina is completely stunning – able to completely transform tunes with that legendary vocal style, and augmenting her words with all the right touches on piano. Titles include "Just In Time", "African Mailman", "Me Me Quitte Pas", "Liberian Calypso", "Stars", "Don't Smoke In Bed", "Little Girl Blue (parts 1 & 2)", "Backlash Blues", "See Line Woman", "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", "Four Women", "No Woman No Cry", "Montreux Blues", and "My Baby Just Cares For Me". 2CD set features 29 tracks in all – including the full 14 song performances recorded at Casino Kursaal in 1968! Jimmy WitherspoonJimmy Witherspoon At Monterey (Jimmy Witherspoon At The Monterey Jazz Festival) ... LP
Hi Fi, 1959. Very Good ... $2.99
Arguably one of the greatest albums ever cut by Jimmy Witherspoon – recorded live at an early Monterey Jazz Festival, and done in a style that shows the strong link between jazz and blues in Jimmy's work! The group on the set includes Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, and Woody Herman – and the longish tracks on the set give them all more than enough room to solo alongside Jimmy's bluesy vocals. The album's also one of the first to be produced by a young David Axelrod – and shows a clear respect for both the singer and the musicians, in a combination that would come out even more strongly on Axe's later productions for Capitol. Titles include "No Rollin Blues", "Big Fine Girl", "Good Rockin Tonight", "Ain't Nobody's Business", and "When I Been Drinkin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original silver label pressing. Cover has some wear and ink promo stamps. Labels also have ink promo stamps.)

Lizz WrightShadow ... CD
Lightyear, 2024. New Copy ... $17.99 18.98
Lizz Wright continues to grow and grow with each new release – with a style that's maybe more globalist than just the jazz and soul vocal modes that first informed her music – this really expressive mode that's moved into territory that's all Lizz's own – and which takes all these different shapes throughout the set! A key force in creativity here is bassist Chris Bruce – an artist we loved years back, when he was part of our Chicago scene – clearly a talent who's also evolved tremendously, and is a great partner for Wright, with whom he co-wrote some of the album's best tracks. The set features guest appearances from Meshell Ndegeocello, Brandee Younger, and Angelique Kidjo – and titles include "Root Of Mercy", "Sweet Feeling", "Lost In The Valley", "Circling", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", "No More Will I Run", "This Way", "Your Love", and "Sparrow". (Neo Soul, Vocalists) CD
