Joe Lee Wilson & Bond StreetShout For Trane ... LP
Why Not/Trio (Japan), 1976. Near Mint- ... $28.99
Maybe the best Joe Lee Wilson album you can ever get! Joe Lee Wilson's got a spiritual jazz vocal style that's in the vein of Leon Thomas, but which often falls short of Thomas' greatness on other recordings – yet here, though, he's totally great – hitting a beautifully soulful vein that's totally righteous, and which really delivers on the promise you'll hear on his other records. The group's quite tight – the Bond Street combo, which includes Fielder Floyd on trumpet, Monty Waters on alto and soprano, and Shiroh Mori on guitar – and the session was released by the hard-to-find Why Not imprint of the Japanese label Trio, making it one of the more obscure records in Wilson's catalog. The set steps off with an amazing take on Billy Gault's "Mode For Trane" – and other titles include "Song For My Father", "One ", "Four", and "Sophisticated Lady". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Includes insert. Cover has a small bit of tape on the top seam, but looks nice overall.)

✨✧ Roy HamiltonDon't Let Go ... CD
Shout (UK), 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first collections we've ever seen to really do justice to the genius of Roy Hamilton in the 1950s – a package of tracks that not only features his better-known crossover ballads of the time, but which also includes some great tracks in a harder R&B mode! Roy was one of the first singers of his generation to strongly break down the color barrier in popular music – and his amazing vocals were wonderfully suited to a range of material that reached out to many listeners – mellow love songs, rocking upbeat numbers, and even a bit of early country soul – all presented here in great sound with a batch of notes that further illustrates the importance of this material. 26 tracks in all – including "Unchained Melody", "You Can Have Her", "Don't Let Go", "Hurt", "Earthbound", "Crazy Feelin", "Mr Rock & Soul", "I Need Your Lovin", "Dreams Oh Dreams", "I'll Never Be Free", "Blowtop Blues", "On My Way Back Home", "Jungle Fever", "Forgive This Fool", "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down & Cry", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town", and "That's All Right". ✨✧ Jack TeagardenSwing Low Sweet Spiritual ... LP
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Jack Teagarden sings and swings on trombone – that unique groove that was a key updating of his trad style in these later years! As you might guess from the title, the album's made mostly of tunes from spiritual sources – swung in tighter jazzy styles by arranger Van Alexander, who brings in some occasional vocal chorus bits from time to time – sung by doo wop legends The Five Keys! But Jack's almost always in the lead – hitting a crackling, honest sort of warmth, whether on vocals or trombone – on titles that include "This Train", "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Sing & Shout", "Deep River", and "Goin Home". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono turquoise label pressing. Cover has surface wear.)

✨✧ Wes Montgomery/Jon Hendricks/MastersoundsGood Git-Together (plus Kismet – A Jazz Interpretation By The Mastersounds) ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Lonehill (Spain), 1958/1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure set of tracks – but some really wonderful material from the catalog of Pacific Jazz Records! The CD's title clearly showcases the presence of Wes Montgomery on the sides – but Wes was actually more of a sideman on these tracks, and the real credit for the greatness goes to the leaders! The first 10 tracks on the CD are from the album Good Git Together by Jon Hendricks – a rare early non-LHR session by the jazz vocalist – one cut in a very different style than his more famous group vocalese work. Hendricks is laidback, open, and very soulful – working with Wes, Buddy, and Monk Montgomery – as well as Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Pony Poindexter, and Gildo Mahones – all coming together in a "git together" session that features some of Hendricks' best vocals on record! The session features great readings of Hendricks originals that include "Minor Catastrophe", "I'll Die Happy", and "I'm Gonna Shout" – as well as Gigi Gryce's "Music In The Air" and "Social Call", plus a great take on Randy Weston's "Pretty Strange" and Gildo Mahones' "The Shouter". Next up on the set are 8 more tracks from a jazz version of Kismet – recorded by The Mastersounds group which featured Buddy Montgomery on vibes and Monk Montgomery on bass – joined here by Wes on guitar! The source of the tunes is a musical, but the presentation is all jazz – and the group craft some real magic in their exotic style, with tracks that include "Fate", "Olive Tree", "Not Since Nineveh", and "Gesticulate & Rhymes Have I". (Jazz, Vocalists) CD

Ernestine AllenLet It Roll ... CD
Tru Sound, Early 60s. Used ... $1.99 3.99
Tasty R&B material, recorded on Prestige's short-lived Tru-Sound subsidiary. Ernestine had some earlier fame under the name Anisteen Allen, and this record's got a similar sound to her late 40s work – with lots of smoky vocals, touched by a warm jazz sensibility that gives the material a bit more sophistication than your average R&B shouter. King Curtis leads the group, and titles include "Let It Roll", "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Love For Sale", and "Miss Allen's Blues". (Soul, Vocalists) CD
(Out of print.)

✨✧ Ray CharlesTell The Truth ... LP
Atlantic/Charly (UK), 1950s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tasty compilation that features 16 of Ray's best rhythm & blues sides cut for Atlantic records during the 60s! The record's a rare chance to pick up some of the harder cuts by Ray on vinyl – and it includes hard-shoutin' gems like "Greenbacks", "It Should've Been Me", "Talkin Bout You", "Lonely Avenue", "Mess Around", "This Little Girl of Mine", "I Got A Woman", "Losing Hand", and "That's Enough". Great notes, and 16 killers all the way through! (Soul, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s issue. Cover has light wear and is bent a bit at the corners.)

✨✧ Eddie Cleanhead VinsonOriginal Cleanhead (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ace (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really sweet late effort from bluesy soul singer and sax player Eddie Cleanhead Vinson – his dawn of the 70s comeback! Cleanhead covered a whole lot of stylistic range in earlier years, from big band vocalist, to R&B shouter, to bebop era alto sax player – and he comfortably displays that range here, albeit in a loose, easygoing soul mode – backed by a great group of session players that includes Joe Pass, Artie Butler, Arthur Wright and Plas Johnson. Bob Thiele produced, and the titles include "Cleanhead Blues", "Pass Out", "Alimony Blues", "Cleanhead Is Back", "Juice Head Baby", "Old Maid Boogie", "One O'Clock Humph" and "I Needs To Be Be'd Wid". This great Ace CD version includes 3 bonus tracks: live versions of "Cleanhead Blues", "I Had A Dream" and "Person To Person". (Blues, Vocalists) CD
(Still sealed!)
