Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". (Jazz, Vocalists) CD

✨✧ LuluLulu Sings To Sir With Love ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An album named after and starting with Lulu's super huge hit from the film of the same name – the tune that crossed her over big with American audiences in the 60s, and which paved the way for a short burst of fame on the US market! The album's got a surprising depth overall – a nice range of modes that goes way beyond that straighter soul-influenced sound that other Brit girl pop singers were using at the time – with bits of folk, rock, fuzz, and sunshine all getting some nice play as the tunes roll on. Part of the credit goes to arrangers John Paul Jones and Peter Knight, but this sound is probably most likely due to producer Mickie Most, who gives Lulu the same wide ranging styles he was bringing to his work with Donovan at the time. Titles include "To Sir With Love", "Morning Dew", "Rattler", "Love Loves To Love Love", "Day Tripper", "Best Of Both Worlds", "The Boat That I Row", and "You & I". ✨✧ VariousHere It Is – A Tribute To Leonard Cohen ... CD
Blue Note, 2022. Used ... Out Of Stock
The music of Leonard Cohen, but served up in a style that's quite different than you might expect – yet that's maybe no surprise, as right from the start, Cohen's magical songs were already getting interpretations by artists in a range of different styles! The setting here is Blue Note, but the artists are a wider range than those you'd normally hear on the label – with a mix of rock and soul talents next to jazz artists – on titles that include "If It Be Your Will" by Mavis Staples, "Suzanne" by Gregory Porter, "Steer Your Way" by Norah Jones, "Avalanche" by Immanuel Wilkins, "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" by Luciana Souza, "Bird On The Wire" by Bill Frisell, "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Nathaniel Rateliff, "Coming Back To You" by James Taylor, "Here It Is" by Peter Gabriel, and "You Want It Darker" by Iggy Pop. ✨✧ Oscar Peterson with Singers UnlimitedIn Tune ... LP
MPS, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the first albums cut by the fab Singers Unlimited – and the set that has them backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio! The Singers always mixed well with guest jazz talents – and the style of this albums gives their sweet harmonies a nice jazz-based groove and not too much cheese on the top – one of the leanest instrumental settings from their MPS era, and a nicely gliding groove that supports their voices wonderfully! The record includes great versions of "The Gentle Rain", "Once Upon A Summertime", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and Thad Jones' great "A Child Is Born" – as well as a pretty crazy rendition of "Sesame Street"! (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. The back cover has light pen.)
