✨✧ Ray CharlesGenius Hits The Road ... LP
ABC, 1960. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A stunning standout from Ray Charles' years on ABC Records – and a set that brings in a bit of hard-swinging jazz to the country-styled groove Ray was hitting at the time! Backings are by Ralph Burns, who keeps things pretty hip – not as modern as some of his 50s charts for other singers, but with some great horns that cascade beautifully alongside Ray's raspy vocals in the lead. The "road" title leads to a bunch of travel-themed tunes – but that approach also yields one of Charles' biggest classics – his version of "Georgia On My Mind" – heard here amidst other tracks that include "New York's My Home", "Moonlight In Vermont", "Deep In The Heart Of Texas", "Blue Hawaii", "Carry Me Back To Old Virginny", "Alabamy Bound", and "Mississippi Mud". ✨✧ Bobby Darin & Johnny MercerTwo Of A Kind ... LP
Atco, 1960. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really surprising pairing of talents – and one that makes the album one of the real standouts from the early Bobby Darin years on Atco Records! Johnny Mercer was one of the coolest, grooviest songwriters of the 40s – and he was also a singer with a hell of a lot of charm – which makes him a perfect match here for Darin, who was a master showman right from the start! The pair trade lines wonderfully, and get the right sort of jazzy backings from Billy May – who knows how to keep things swinging, and lift the spirits of the set! The album starts and ends with the warm title cut "Two Of A Kind" – co-written by the pair – and other titles include some great Mercer compositions, plus other titles too – with tracks that include "Ace In The Hole", "East Of The Rockies", "Bob White", "Mississippi Mud", and "Who Takes Care Of The Caretaker's Daughter". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s pressing in a barcode cover, with light wear and a promo stamp.)

Nina SimoneBest Of Nina Simone (Philips) ... CD
Philips/Polygram, Mid/Late 60s. Used ... $1.99 2.99
Righteous and soulful! The work that Nina Simone did at Philips is among some of her best work ever – and this set features 12 great cuts that aren't always that easy to find on wax. Includes the anthemic feminist classic "Four Women", the slightly-funky "Mississippi Goddam", the moody "Wild Is The Wind", the righteous "Break Down & Let It All Out", and the heavenly version of "I Loves You, Porgy", which just about surpasses all other recorded versions! ✨✧ Nina SimoneGreat Women Of Song – Nina Simone ... LP
Philips/Verve, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A collection of classic material from the Philips Records years of Nina Simone – a key 60s moment when she was moving way past her roots as a jazz singer, to embrace all sorts of righteous new styles – and set a tone for singers that's held strong for decades! The music here is bubbling over with a new sense of pride and power for the 60s – a style that certainly ruffled some feathers at the time, but which really came to be that which established the legacy of Nina Simone after earlier periods recording for the Bethlehem and Colpix labels. The choice of cuts is great – and titles include "Four Women", "See Line Woman", "Wild Is The Wind", "Take Care Of Business", "Tell Me More & More & Then Some", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "Feeling Good", "I Put A Spell On You", and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" – plus live versions of "Mississippi Goddam" and "I Loves You Porgy". Nina SimoneNina Simone In Concert (UHQCD pressing) ... CD
Philips/Verve (Japan), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99 23.99
A live set from Nina Simone – and one of those records that has her taking familiar material, but completely transforming it in the process – using tunes that might not seem that political at the start, then mixing them with other righteous numbers, to create this amazingly rich tapestry of power, politics, and emotion! The tracks are longish, at a level that allows for a bit of improvisation that shows that Nina's spirit was always burning creatively – and the album includes a great version of Nina's classic "Mississippi Goddam", plus "Old Jim Crow", "Pirate Jenny", "Plain Gold Ring", "I Loves You, Porgy", "Don't Smoke In Bed", and "Go Limp". Nina SimoneYou've Got To Learn ... CD
Verve, 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really fantastic live album from Nina Simone – recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966, and delivered with that hard-burning energy that always makes Nina's concert performances so mindblowing! There's a lean, mean groove to the record – sharply soulful piano from Simone, and backing from a group that includes some exceptional work on drums from Robert Hamilton – a player who really helps kick up the rhythms at times – while Nina delivers these searing lyrics that definitely showcase the more righteous, political side of her spectrum! The set's a great addition to the Philips material from this period – and titles include a killer version of "Mississippi Goddam", plus "You've Got To Learn", "Blues For Mama", "Be My Husband", "Music For Lovers", and "I Loves You Porgy".
