✨✧ Joyce HurleyJoyce (180 gram pressing) ... LP
44 Records/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most soulful albums to come out of the Australian scene of the 70s – and the crowning achievement of jazz singer Joyce Hurley – a vocalist we'd easily rank with Dee Dee Bridgewater for depth of righteous expression! Joyce's voice is definitely different than Dee Dee's – with some very unique phrasing – but this album's got the same sort of uncommonly expressive vibe as Bridgewater's legendary Afro Blue set. Backing is by a small combo with nice reed and electric piano work – usually letting Joyce take the lead at most moments, but with horn help to shape the sound of the tunes in really nice ways – a balance that few jazz records of the time ever hit this well – and which continues to uphold the soulful power of Hurley's vocals! The album's got loads of great numbers – including the jazz dance classic "Sunbath", a wicked take on "Maiden Voyage", and the instrumental number "Sambole" – plus other titles that include "Blues For Joyce", "Left Alone", "How Are You Dreaming", and "Threedom Street". Namaz with Rachel Gould300 MPH ... LP
Software/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Soaring grooves and scatting vocals – a wonderful collaboration between this hip fusion combo and singer Rachel Gould, and one that's right up there with the best German grooves of the Glucklich generation! Rachel only sings on a few of the album's tracks, but those sparkle beautifully with a breezy sort of soul that's totally great – and other instrumental titles have a different sort of appeal, but one that's wonderful too – well-played keyboards and guitar, without some of the fusion excesses of the 70s – served up in lean grooves that bring in a great mix of Brazilian and funky jazz styles. The set's got a warmly appealing sound throughout – but not one that's at all like US fusion of the time – still quite adventurous, and really set free to groove in a joyous sort of way! Titles include "Mystic Latin", "Movin Seconds", "Vom Regen Bogen", "Short Funky", "Congress Of Dreams", "Cyklus III", and "Anticipated Joy". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Julie LondonLondon By Night ... LP
Liberty, 1959. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Breathy vocals from the great Julie London – an album recorded early in her years on Liberty Records, but with a slightly full sound overall! Backings are by the orchestra of Pete King – a little heavy on the strings, but never too much so – just enough to give the tunes a sad-tinged sort of sound that glows and shimmers nicely behind Julie's vocals – very much in the moody feel you might expect from the trashy image of London in an alley on the cover! The set's never sleepy, and has a nicely dark undercurrent – on titles that include "Nobody's Heart", "The Exciting Life", "Something I Dreamed Last Night", "Well Sir", "In The Middle Of A Kiss", "Pousse Cafe", "Mad About The Boy", and "My Man's Gone Now". ✨✧ Lee HazlewoodThese Boots Are Made For Walkin' – The Complete MGM Recordings ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Genius, pure genius! (Have we said that about Lee too many times before?) The work of Lee Hazlewood is beyond description – a bit of vocals, a bit of country, a bit of lounge, and a bit of rock – all wrapped up with a sinister edge that has you believing that this was the man who used to refer to his frequent musical partner as "Nasty" Sinatra over the headphones during recording sessions! The set features 35 tracks from Lee's obscure years at MGM records – wonderful vocal tunes that rank with some of his best ever, plus a few weird instrumentals, recorded by Lee Hazlewood's Woodchucks. Insanely wonderful stuff – records that we come back to again and again and again over the years – finally presented in their entirety, with a great set of notes on the music! Tracks include "Hands", "Mannford Oklahoma", "This Town", "Sand", "Child", "Little War", "Fort Worth", "Summer Wine", "I Move Around", "After Six", "Batman", "Summer Nights", "Suzi Jane Is Back In Town", "In Our Time", "When A Fool Loves A Fool", and "So Long Babe".
