A record of incredible beauty – probably our favorite of all the Betty Carter comeback albums! The set starts with one of the most wonderful tunes Betty's ever written – "30 Years", a lightly grooving number told from the perspective of a woman who's losing her man after three decades of love, and which is carried off with a level of sincerity and soul that's simply incredible. The album also features a remake of Betty's classic "Open The Door", entitled "Open The Door '90", and featuring solos by Freddie Hubbard and Craig Handy. The whole thing's great, though – and other tracks include "What's The Use Of Wonderin", "Droppin Things", "I Love Music", and "Dull Day In Chicago". CD

An excellent CD that features some of Betty Carter's earliest work – sides recorded for the album Meet Betty Carter & Ray Bryant, plus other rare ones that were later collected on the Social Call album! The set features some sublime tunes arranged by Gigi Gryce – with a floating jazzy style that works perfectly with Betty's incredible voice – plus others with backings by Ray Bryant's combo, and a few more that feature Ray's group playing without Betty's vocals. Betty's voice is already fantastic – even at this early point in her career – with an amazing range of expression, and a jazz-based approach that's different from most of her generation. Unissued live work from the great Shirley Horn – recorded in Las Vegas right before her big comeback recordings of the 90s – at a time when Shirley was hardly getting a chance to make an album! That lack of attention hardly matters to Horn, though – as she faces this performance with all of the class, charm, and undeniable soul of her bigger label material – both singing and playing piano with that unique sense of phrasing that made her a standout from the 60s onward – easily one of the coolest jazz talents of her generation – and an artist that we'd rank up there with Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, and a rare few others. The album's got a few especially nice long tracks – which have Shirley stretching out with great long solos on piano, too – in a trio that features Charles Ables on bass and Steve Williams on drums. An overlooked gem from the great Shirley Horn – a record from a time right before she burst into bigger fame, thanks to Verve Records – but was still working strongly in the underground, cutting fantastic records like this! Horn's got this mature, thoughtful approach that makes her way more than just another jazz singer – this well-developed mixture of sophistication and swing that's got the same very personal level of Betty Carter at this point – even though Shirley's a completely different singer – with the lady herself playing piano, alongside bass from Charles Ables and drums from Steve Williams. Titles include a great version of "Summer" (aka "Estate") – plus "Since I Fell For You", "You're My Thrill", "Dindi", "Softly As I Leave You", "Forget Me", and "I Watch You Sleep". CD

A fantastic record – one of the best jazz vocal records of the 80s, and a real bright spot in an often dim decade for jazz! The set is Carmen Lundy's debut – and it's a masterful self-produced effort that immediately put her in the ranks of the ultra-hip, ultra-soulful jazz crowd – singers like Betty Carter and Dee Dee Bridgewater, both of whom took a lot longer to sound this good than Carmen! The record is set in a perfect setting – Carmen working closely with musicians headed up by brother Curtis on bass, and including soulful players like Bobby Watson, Rene McLean, Cecil Bridgewater, Jon Faddis, and Harry Whitaker. The whole thing's great – the kind of righteous vocal set that few singer ever seem to make this well – and titles include some great originals like "Good Morning Kiss", "Time is Love", and "Perfect Stranger" – plus excellent versions of "Dindi", "Love For Sale", and "The Lamp Is Low". Beautifully intimate sounds from the great Cecile McLorin Salvant – a set that has the singer working with only piano or organ for accompaniment, but at a level that has her voice still flowing with marvelous ease! We've loved Cecile right from the start – but here, she maybe blows us away even more – doing a heck of a lot with just a little, managing to hit Betty Carter-like levels of expression and inflection with her vocals – while Sullivan Fortner plays piano on some tracks, organ on the others! The arrangements are wonderful – as inventive as Cecile's vocals – so that even if you think you know the tune, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
