Mose AllisonHello There Universe ... LP
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... $5.99
One of Mose's best albums for Atlantic – an ambitious session that features larger arrangements backing him up, making for a much fuller sound than on other records! The album includes a greatly grooving version of "Wild Man On The Loose" – done with this cool sneaky organ – and lots of the other tracks feature strong horn parts that flesh out the sound, and give a nice edge to Mose's vocals. Other titles include "On The Run", "Somebody Gotta Move", "No Exit", "I'm Smashed", and "Hello There Universe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a name in marker on both sides.)

✨✧ Mose AllisonSwingin Machine ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mose Allison creates a very swinging machine for this classic Atlantic Records set – by adding in a few horns to his usual trio, and making for a groove that's even jazzier overall! Mose's vocals are wonderful, as always – extremely witty, with that great balance of New Orleans roots and 60s hipster jazz – served up in a host of his own wonderful compositions! But at some points, the horns step out even more strongly, and get some great solo play of their own – with excellent work from the obscure Jimmy Reider on tenor sax, a surprisingly great player we wish we knew better – plus the great Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Some tunes are instrumentals – and titles include the classic"Swingin Machine", plus "Do It", "Stop This World", "Promenade", "If You're Goin To The City", and "Saritha". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed 60s pressing! Shrink is slightly open along the spine, but tight overall. Cover has light wear in one corner, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Mose AllisonYour Mind Is On Vacation ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Ol' Mose manages to keep his cool, even in the 70s – laying down some great small combo work with Joe Farrell and Al Cohn each playing a bit of tenor! That Allison vocal approach is right on the money – and titles include "Your Molecular Structure", "If You Only Knew", "What Do You Do After You Ruin Your Life", "I Feel So Good", "Fires Of Spring", and "No Matter". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light surface wear and some aging.)

Oscar Brown JrBrother Where Are You ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Sealed ... $14.99
Sweet 70s funk from the great Oscar Brown – quite a change from his jazz-based work of the 60s, but a great new sitting for all of his wonderful wit and warmth! Brown's still a hell of a songwriter, and one with a very socially-conscious eye – sharper here than before, with lots of comments on the changes in society in the 70s, mixed with a few more heartfelt, personal moments too. There's still a bit of jazz in the mix – thanks to work from Seldon Powell on reeds, and Joe Sample on keyboards – and arrangements are by old friends Floyd Morris, the underground Chicago soul genius – and Sivuca, best known for his Brazilian music, but a great choice here to expand the groove. Brown wrote all the tunes on the record – and titles include "From My Window", "Like A Flower", "Brother Where Are YOu", ""The Lone Ranger", "If You Come Back", and "The Joneses". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed original pressing, with hype sticker! Cover has a small cutout mark.)

✨✧ Chris ConnorFree Spirits ... LP
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff – and one of Chris Connor's greatest records for Atlantic! There's a depth to this set that passes some of her others from the time – partially because the album features a very hip set of tunes, written by Ornette Coleman, Norman Mapp, John Lewis, Peggy Lee, and others – and partially because the album has some sublime arrangements by Al Cohn that easily shift between darkness and swinging brilliance – all with that perfect sense of balance that Connor brought to her best sessions. Titles include "I'm Gonna Go Fishin", "Jump For Joy", "Night Bird", "Opportunity Please Knock", "Milano", "Day Dream", "Free Spirits", and a great version of "Lonely Woman"! LP, Vinyl record album
(Green and blue label stereo pressing. Includes the Atlantic inner sleeve. Cover has a small cutout hole, minimal wear, and a small split at the bottom of the spine.)

Chris ConnorWitchcraft ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Sealed ... $24.99
A lovely side by Chris Connor for Atlantic, recorded not too long after her stint at Bethlehem – where she'd perfected an icy cool style of singing that's still to be matched to this day! The album features larger arrangements by Richard Wess – but still has a light jazzy feel, intimate in approach, despite the larger musical backings. Chris' voice is at once personal and removed – a razor's edge of emotion, repressing some impulses, and opening up surprisingly at other moments. Titles include "Skyscraper Blues", "The Lady Sings The Blues", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "Just In Time", "Baltimore Oriole", and "How Little We Know". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, mono pressing – most likely 60s. Shrinkwrap is open along the bottom seam, which has a very small split in the middle. Cover also has a small cutout hole.)

✨✧ Bobby DarinInside Out ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A great little record by Bobby – recorded hot on the heels of his big hit recording of "If I Were A Carpenter", and with a surprising respect for Tim Hardin and a lot of the other young songwriters of the post-folk years. Keep in mind that Darin was really feeling his mortality at this point, and although it's easy to say that he's becoming a fake folkie, his approach to the material is very sincere – so much so that we're always surprised at how much we like this one. Titles include "Bes Friends", "Darling Be Home Soon", "Hello Sunshine", "Lady Fingers", "Whatever Happened To Happy", and Hardin's "Black Sheep Boy" and "The Lady Came From Baltimore". LP, Vinyl record album
(Pink and brown label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam.)

Ella's revisiting the Cole Porter songbook–this time with arrangements from Nelson Riddle! Once again produced by Norman Granz, the orchestra features Harry Edison on trumpet, Victor Feldman on vibes, and Tommy Flanagan on piano, and includes wonderful versions of "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Silk Stockings", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Love For Sale", "Anything Goes", and "At Long Last Love". Carmen McRaeGreat American Songbook – Recorded Live At Donte's ... LP
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $8.99
The title sounds a bit ambitious, but the album's actually a great intimate date from Carmen McRae – a beautifully-recorded small combo performance – caught live at Donte's in LA, with a sound that hearkens back to some of Carmen's best work of the 50s! The format is spare and simple – backing by a quartet that features Joe Pass on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Chuck Domanico on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums – all grooving with a light and lively touch behind Carmen's wonderful vocals – served up here with a lot more freedom than she was getting on most of her studio dates from the time. The "great American songbook" is really just a catch-all for a very wide variety of work included on the record – and the album's hardly the staid "songbook" sort of album you'd guess from the title. Instead, Carmen really opens herself up to a lot of great tunes, from classic to contemporary – with titles that include "Three Little Words", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "The Ballad Of Thelonious Monk", "Behind The Face", "Sunday", "Day By Day", "If The Moon Turns Green", "At Long Last Love", and "A Song For You". ✨✧ Esther PhillipsBurnin' – Live At Freddie Jett's Pied Piper, LA ... LP
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key moment in the career of Esther Phillips – and a record that really has her shaking off the rougher bluesy styles of the earlier years, and pointing the way towards strong jazz success in the 70s! The album's definitely burnin, but with a sophisticated vibe too – as Esther works with backing from a small combo that includes Jack Wilson on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Cornell Dupree on guitar – a lineup that almost hits the same vibe as her later work on CTI/Kudu – and which brings out a new depth in Esther's vocals that's simply amazing! There's a heartbreaking quality to most of the numbers – a mix of roots and class, depth and poise – all served up in a style that's unlike any other singer before or since. Titles include "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream", "And I Love Him", "Shangri-La", "I'm Getting Long Alright", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". (Soul, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Mel TormeLive At The Maisonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Great live work from a near-lost stretch of Mel Torme – a time when he wasn't recording as much as a few years before, but still has a hell of a lot of power in performance! Backings are tight and jazzy – served up by the Al Porcino, with the same punchy approach that Marty Paich gave Mel on other albums – and set to some surprisingly nice arrangements that Torme supposedly handled himself. The recording quality brings a nice sort of liveness to the date – really captures the crowd's enthusiasm in the Maisonette Room of the St Regis – and titles include "Jet Set", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Route 66", and "It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone" – plus an extended "Gershwin Medley", a hint of Mel's medley years to come – and a surprising take on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Jackie De ShannonPut A Little Love In Your Heart ... LP
Imperial, 1969. Sealed ... $14.99
Quite possibly the last great hit from singer Jackie DeShannon – an album built around the righteous spirit of the title track – filled with really wonderful original tunes penned by Jackie and soul singer Jimmy Holiday! The album may well be the best to explore the space between pop and soul that often characterized Jackie's work – and the overall sound is somewhat similar to some of Dusty Springfield's best pop/soul work from the same stretch. 10 of the album's 12 tracks are originals by Holiday and DeShannon – all set to soaring orchestrations by James Langeford, which often have a pronounced influence from the sound of Atlantic Records in the late 60s! Titles include "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "You Are The Real Thing", "River Of Love", "Movin", "You Can Come To Me", "You Have A Way With Me", and "I Let Go Completely". ✨✧ Double SixDouble Six Of Paris Sing Ray Charles ... LP
Philips, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great records made by the cool French jazzy vocal group that included Ward Swingle and Christine LeGrand, and which did stuff that was much more straightforwardly jazzy than the semi-classical work of the Swingle Singers. This LP's got them backed by Jerome Richardson and his quartet, and has them running through a set of tracks associated with Ray Charles' Atlantic work. Cuts include "Stompin' Room Only, "Hit The Road, Jack", "Yes, Indeed", and "One Mint Julep", and all have a swingin' jazz vocalese sound. Cool stuff by one of the great lost groups of the 60's.
