✨✧ Astrud GilbertoGreat Women Of Song – Astrud Gilberto ... LP
Verve, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
There's few singers lovelier than Astrud Gilberto – and this "great women" set is a perfect introduction to her music – a package filled with the key cuts she recorded for Verve Records during the big bossa nova boom of the 60s – a movement that lifted Astrud from obscurity into the realm of undeniably classic singers! The set features some of Gilberto's original recordings with tenorist Stan Getz, and others on her own – with backings from arrangers Don Sebesky, Claus Ogerman, Gil Evans, and Marty Paich – and one tune done with Brazilian organist Walter Wanderley too! Titles include "Agua De Beber", "Take Me To Aruanda", "O Morro", "Berimbau", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "How Insensitive", "Girl From Ipanema", "Fly Me To The Moon", "So Nice", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Once I Loved", "Corcovado", and "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce". Michele HendricksCarryin On ... LP
Muse, 1987. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A solo set from Michele Hendricks – possibly best known for her work with Hendricks & Co, a vocal group with her famous father Jon – but still sounding pretty great here on her own! The set's a simple, soulful outing – one that has Hendricks singing in some deep-toned vocals that are full of feeling – in small group settings with players who include either Ralph Moore or Stan Getz on tenor, Ray Drummond or Anthony Jackson on bass, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Moore's horn is especially nice – really deepening the feeling of the cut's he's on – and titles include a great version of "I Feel The Earth Move", plus "O Pato", "Dream A Little Dream", "Say When", "Old Devil Moon", and "Letter To Joe". ✨✧ Vi Velasco with Zoot SimsCantando Bossa Nova ... LP
Colpix, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the few albums ever cut by singer Vi Velasco – and a great vocal follow-up to the Zoot Sims bossa albums on Colpix! Zoot plays tenor on this record too – mixing his solos with Vi's vocals in a style that's like the interplay between Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto – with a similar blend of American jazz and Brazilian roots! Arrangements are by Al Cohn and Manny Albam – and the players also include Marky Markowitz on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – who brings in some nice Brazilian flavors on his instrument. Titles include "Recado", "Tu E Eu", "Sem Saudades De Voce", "Exactamente Como Tu", "Nao Branques Com O Amor", and "Tenho Ritmo" – many of which are bossa versions of familiar tunes. (Brazil, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono gold label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging, with a small stain at the bottom right corner.)
