Abdur RazzaqNight Of Power (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Green Essence/P-Vine (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
A really unique little record – this amazing mix of keyboard jazz and spoken word – and unlike anything else we can think of! We might be tempted to think of the set as a more spiritual journey into territory that Rick Holmes explored with Roy Ayers – but the record is much more open and free-flowing – with a range of different keyboards from leader Abdur Razzaq, who plays Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and other keys – and also delivers a lot of percussion too! Rafiyq performs the vocals – and is recorded with this slight echo that makes his wisdom sound even more majestic – and titles include the long "Night Of Power (parts 1 & 2)", and the shorter "Reflections From The Grave". ✨✧ Alex HaleyAlex Haley Tells The Story Of His Search For Roots ... LP
Warner, 1977. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Quite an unusual double-length set for the time – and a great example of the way that records often filled in on the market in the days before you could make money selling videotapes and DVDs! The 2LP set features Alex Haley telling the story of the material that went into Roots – his research and journeys, augmented by some personal recollections – presented here as a single spoken piece that takes up 4 sides of the album, with no additional backings at all. ✨✧ Sidney Poitier/Fred KatzJourneys Inside The Mind (aka Poitier Meets Plato) ... LP
Warner, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A rather bizarre but totally hip record – Sidney Poitier gives dark moody readings of Plato, in his cold hip voice, with some groovy hipster jazz backing by Fred Katz, over great tracks like "Our World is a Cave" and "Women's Place in Society". The music is actually pretty great – kind of like Chico Hamilton-styled jazz, and done in a way that brings a lot more life to the record than you'd expect from just Sidney's voice! (Green W7 label pressing. Cover has some edge wear, small bottom seam split, light surface wear.)
