✨✧ Galt MacDermotWoman Is Sweeter (2023 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Kilmarnock/Now Again, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest moments ever from the great Galt MacDermot – an album that he recorded for his own small label, in the time after he scored big bucks with the soundtrack to Hair – and was able to work on so many other different creative projects! The album's fantastic – tight, funky, with lots of choppy bits, but also some spare keyboard moments too – sampled famously by a few hip hoppers over the years, but more than great enough on its own. Titles include the classic "Space" – plus "Tango", "Woman Is Sweeter", "Moving Clothes", "Perfume Bottles", "Merry Go Round", "Princess Gika", and "Radio Rock" – plus some cool "Fragments" tracks. PaternosterDie Ersten Tage ... LP
Now Again, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A rare early moment from the legendary Austrian group Paternoster – sounds that predate their one and only cult-status album – originally created for the equally legendary film, Die Ersten Tage! The music here was never issued commercially at the time – and the release of these sounds adds a much-needed page to the slim book of Paternoster – especially since the creative flair of these songs really fleshes out our understanding of the group! As with their vocal music, most of the style here is slow, but jamming – kind of mellow prog, almost – but lighter, too – and with a moodier vibe, given the absence of lyrics – which lets the offbeat guitar parts do most of the speaking for the group. The whole thing's fragile, yet jagged – earthy, but cosmic – and the set features 30 tracks in all, appearing here on record for the first time ever! (Rock, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ David Raksin/Bernard HerrmannLaura/Jane Eyre ... CD
Fox, 1943/1944. Used ... Out Of Stock
Without a doubt, one of the most famous scores to come out of Hollywood in the 40s – David Raksin's enduring soundtrack for Laura – and it's as beautiful now as ever! The theme was recorded time and time again over the next few decades – in vocal and instrumental versions, by hundreds of artists. The entire score is wonderful though – and mighty influential, too! It's lush and lovely, with noirish touches – seemingly serving as a template for so many dramatic scores to come! This version includes "The Laura Suite – Theme & Variations" conducted by Alfred Newman, plus Bernard Herrmann's score to Jane Eyre – conducted by the composer himself! CD

✨✧ Bob DoroughMultiplication Rock ... LP
Capitol, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sure, it was silly stuff when we were kids – but once De La Soul sampled "Three Is The Magic Number", this record became one of the most prized in our possession! And thanks to that hip hop reintroduction, we've really fallen in love with the music again over the years – partly because the tunes are all so groovy, and partly because we've really come to know the jazz-based work of composer Bob Dorough! At the time of this set, Dorough was coming off some great work in the 60s – his own rare recordings, music for Spanky & Our Gang, and others – all of which seems to inform these math-based tunes written for Saturday morning TV. The tunes are all pretty darn catchy, and often quite jazzy – and instrumentation often features some great electric piano nestled in alongside the vocals. Dorough sings the lion's share of the work for this album – although Grady Tate sings on two numbers, and Blossom Dearie on one more. Titles include the amazing "Three Is A Magic Number" – plus "Lucky Seven Sampson", "Little Twelve Toes", "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "I Got Six", "Naughty Number Nine", "Figure Eight", and "The Four Legged Zoo". Final SolutionBrotherman ... CD
Numero, 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A never-heard soundtrack for a never-seen film – and a record that's every bit as funky as better-known sets from the blacksploitation era! Final Solution were a small time group from Chicago's west side in the 70s, but on this wicked little soundtrack they sparkle just as brightly as Isaac Hayes, Willie Hutch, Curtis Mayfield, or any of our favorite soundtrack soul artists from the time – working in a really righteous approach to soul with lots of heavy rhythms on the bottom and rumbling bass in the mix – so that even when the tunes are mellow, there's still a bold, brash sort of power to the set! The vocals are mostly delivered in harmony style, again with a nice edge – a bit like The Impressions work on Three The Hard Way, but with more of an indie soul feel overall, given the production circumstances. Once again, our hats are off to Numero for unearthing this gem – and as usual, the full tale of the group, the movie, and the music is told at length in the accompanying 16 page booklet! Titles include "Brotherman", "Never Coming Back Again", "I Don't Care", "Girl In My Life", "Gotta Get Through To You", "One Day", "I'm Ready For Love", "Theme From Brotherman", "No Place To Run", and "We Can Work It Out". (Soul, Soundtracks) CD

✨✧ Stu Phillips/Tammy Wynette/The WindowsRun Angel Run ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Biker time again – as Stu Phillips lays down a tight little soundtrack for this obscure motorcycle flick from the late 60s! Stu started out as a jazz man, but is best known to us for his very groovy work on the Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls soundtrack. The best cuts on here are Stu's instrumentals – a mixture of funky jazz with a twist, and a bit of funky flute, plus some other numbers that have a well-composed, more serious approach. Highlights include "Friendly Fuzz", which mixes heavy guitars, drums, and flute – and "Rescue", which has a very similar approach – plus the chase-y groover "Get It On". Tammy Wynette sings the title cut "Run Angel Run", and The Windows sing "True Believers", "You're Gonna Get A Piece Of My Mind", and "Love & Admiration Of The Brotherhood Society Of South Napa County". Also includes "Oversexed" – a nice mellow tune with a misleading title. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lalo SchifrinMission Impossible ... LP
Dot, Late 60s. Good ... Out Of Stock
A familiar record – but a fantastic one! You probably all know the famous theme to "Mission Impossible" – Lalo Schfrin's beautiful jazzy number, with three piano notes revolving over and over again with incredible intensity – and the rest of the record is every bit as great, filled with a wonderful mix of groovy styles! The groove ranges from fast bossa to groovy 60s crime jazz to sparer tenser numbers that still manage to move nicely – and listening to the record over the years, our ears are always happily surprised at the level of genius that was allowed expression in the guise of a normal TV soundtrack. Cuts include "Jim On The Move", "The Plot", "The Sniper", "Danger", and "Barney Does It All". LP, Vinyl record album
