An early western soundtrack from Italian maestro Bruno Nicolai – presented here for the first time ever, complete with a huge number of tracks from this obscure film! Much of the work is in a tense orchestra mode – peppered with western themes, but more conventionally dramatic overall – and filled with the dark touches that Nicolai usually brought to more of his non-western work. Franco De Gemini plays stark harmonica lines on a few of the most noteworthy tracks on the album, and a few other cuts use a weirdly-tuned Jews harp to create some Morricone-like notes. CD features 28 titles in all – all lovingly remastered from the original master tapes! CD

A sweetly slow-building soundtrack from maestro Armando Trovajoli – filled with water strings, light woodwinds, and some really dreamy sounds! The set's not as all-out groove oriented as some of Trovajoli's other late 60s work, but it more than makes up for that with a spacious sensibility that has the instrumentation kind of floating in the air – hung from clouds with tiny little threads, just blowing along in the breeze with an almost effortless sort of quality! The tunes flow nicely one into the other – with no grand themes, save for a few slightly more grooving moments – and Edda Dell'Orso manages to sneak in a few light vocal performances – but again, in a relatively spare and subtle way. Titles include "Come Quando Perche", "Presa Nella Rete", "Paula", "Onde Sulla Riva", "Una Notte Particolare", and "Disperazione Di Un Ricordo". CD

That's a pretty racy cover – but the music inside is a lot more cool and classy – a set of sweet jazz funk numbers put together by the famous French maestro Alain Goraguer, with lots of nice electric touches! You may know Goraguer from his 60s work with singers – including France Gall and Serge Gainsbourg – or from his straighter soundtracks of that decade too – but here, he's going for a groovier, funkier style – one that fits the porno spirit of the cover, but with all the care and presentation of Alain's earlier work! In other words, these aren't just throwaway tracks churned out quickly for naughty movies – and instead, the songs are more like a 70s progression from the 60s soundtrack material by Goraguer. A real European classic from Ennio Morricone – one of his fantastic soundtracks for French director Henri Verneuil – who always seemed to manage to bring the best out in the maestro! As with some of Morricone's other music for Verneuil, there's an approach here that almost doesn't even seem to fit the images on the screen – moments of wonderful instrumental sensitivity, with those spare passages that Ennio does better than anyone else – mixed with groovier cuts that set the scene for some of the action in the story, but at a level that's almost anti-cinematic, given they way they can stand here on their own. The main "Il Serpente" theme is great – and other tracks include "Canzone Lontana", "Nadine", "Orazione", "Tema Per Una Donna Sola", and "Parata Militare". LP, Vinyl record album

Groove away, maestro! Incontro is a splendid score by Morricone – early 70s groovy, mixing guitar, electric harpischord, organ, and other jangly instrumentation on the best tracks, alternating with mellower, dreamier numbers on the others, serving up a sweet blend of tunes that once again makes us wish we could watch the film, just to hear the music! This one's got the flavor of his best from the time – like La Donna Invisible – even though it's perhaps not as all-out overly composed – and titles include "Patrizia", "Incontro", "Scherzo Un Po Triste", "Per Claudia", "Passeggiata", and "Riflessione". Two groovy Ennio Morricone scores from the 60s – both of them pretty darn great! La Trappola Scatta A Beirut is a hip spy thriller from the time – done with some bold, jazzy inflections on the instrumentation – and styles that echo American and British thrillers of a similar nature. There's some great use of flute and saxophone over more complicated backings – and although there's a bit less of the Morricone sense of space in the overall composition, there's still some key darker touches that are definitely the mark of the maestro. Titles include "Relax Per Un Agente Segreto", "Inseguimento", "Attesa E Fuga", "Agente 505 Missione Compiuta", and "Langiudamente". Next up is the equally jazzy score to Il Successo – a beautiful blend of tenor, vibes, flute, and other sweet instrumental touches – very much in the best Italian soundtrack jazz style of the early 60s. The whole thing's great, and a very overlooked chapter in Morricone's music – with titles that include "Malinconico", "Il Successo", "Per Vittorio", "Allegra Sambina", and "Sarabanda Twist". CD

A killer Morricone soundtrack from the late 60s – filled with sweet tunes and moodier numbers – all served up with cool orchestrations, and some sweet work on electric harpsichord too! The score's lesser-known than some of the maestro's best from the time – but is equally great, and one we're very happy to discover – caught at a mode that still has Morricone using some of his best mod elements from the 60s, yet also beginning to explore the darker sounds that would unfurl even more strongly in the 70s! Bruno Nicolai conducts the group, and the set features a few great vocal moments from I Cantori Moderni – on titles that include "Scherzo Da Guerra", "Scherzo Da Baffone", "Filastrocca Per Cretini", and "Lo Sai Che Cosa Facevano Le Donne A Stalin". A pair of soundtracks for two of the creepiest horror movies of the 70s – back to back on a single CD, and given the top-shelf Film Score Monthly treatment! First up is the score for Soylent Green – a mix of very moody, unusually-toned passages that are mixed with some mellower, jazzier numbers that offset things nicely – composed by Fred Myrow, but also given a bit of help from horror maestro Gerald Fried! The music is definitely above the norm – not just in the higher budget, but also in the way that things come together sonically – at a level that makes for a lot of surprises throughout – on titles that include "Tab's Pad/Furniture Party", "Shirl & Thorn", "Home Lobby Source", "Can I Do Something For You", and "Sol's Music". Demon Seed is a great one from Jerry Fielding – definitely at the darker side of his sonic spectrum, which is pretty darn fitting, given that the film involves a computer having sex with Julie Christie! There's a sense of evil that resonates in the music right from the start – a mode that's partially borrowed from the Italian giallo generation, but which is given a more varied approach here, often at a level that's very low in the sonic spectrum. Tracks include "Birth Scene", "Probed Or Put To Bed", "Last Voyage", and "Closing Crawl". CD features almost 80 minutes of music – and detailed notes on both scores! CD

A great mix of 70s action and exotica from Riz Ortolani – a set that mixes funky touches in with tribal elements, and comes across with a very groovy sound overall! The record's definitely one of the coolest that Ortolani ever recorded, and he's clearly having fun with the mid 70s elements at his disposal – including wah wah guitar, sweet keyboards, and a tight rhythm section who are more than able to follow the maestro on all his many twists and turns on the tunes! A few of the more upbeat numbers almost have a tribal club sort of vibe – and titles include "The World Is Mine", "Festival Dance Of The Llama Sacrifice", "Making Out", "Eden Disturbed", and "Dance Of The Virgins". Two later soundtracks from Riz Ortolani – both showing the maestro at the top of his game! Il Sole Buio has this wonderful way of gently unfolding the melody – almost Morricone-like, but with warmer tones at times – and mixed with a few electric jazz moments to offset the larger orchestrations – although the latter dominate, and really have this wonderfully rich vibe – almost a slight touch of the sort of sentiment you'd get in a French film score too! L'Angelo Con La Pistola is from the same director, Damiano Damiani, two years later – and again has some great orchestral numbers that billow and glisten with a gentle charm, mixed with a few more electric, keyboard-heavy tracks to showcase the action in the story! 21 tracks in all – and first time on CD for both titles. A very early soundtrack from maestro Piero Piccioni – and one that's overflowing with jazzy touches too! The music here is for a film about youth – as you'd guess from the cover – but the score has a richer, more mature quality – with lots of those great modern jazz elements that were brewing up on the scene in Rome right at the end of the 60s, crafted by Piero perfectly into these shorter themes for the film! There's definitely some elements that remind us of the jazz soundtracks used by French directors of the new wave – but there's also a lot more Italian touches, particularly in the way that scene had embraced the California cool of the 50s, but opened it up to new tonal possibilities on their own. Sadly, the musicians aren't listed – but we're betting they're all top-shelf talents, maybe from the Basso/Valdambrini scene – and in addition to the 15 tracks of the original soundtrack, the CD features 17 more bonus titles! Great 60s work from Italian soundtrack maestro Piero Piccioni – featuring 2 different soundtracks for doctor comedies that starred the great Alberto Soldi! The music is a wonderful blend of the lighter side of styles that Piccioni worked in – with a bit of jazz, a bit of bossa, and often some nice wordless vocals that drift across the mix with a really lovely feel! Titles include the tremendous groovers "Fortuna", "Samba Fortuna", and "Fortune Blues" – and other tracks include "Lady Love", "Slow Lady", "Final", "Sirenette", and "Esculapio", a nice horn-heavy theme tune! A really wonderful little record – and some of our favorite work ever from Japanese pop maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto! Sakamoto really surprised folks with this set – not just because it accompanied his strong performance (with David Bowie) in the film, but also because it opened up the way to some of the wonderful film and sound scoring work he'd do in years to come – music that was often as simple and maybe electronic as his work with Yellow Magic Orchestra, but able to create a stunning amount of feeling and depth with just a few simple elements. The music is sublime – a masterpiece in understatement – and a series of instrumental selections ends up with the fantastic song "Forbidden Colours", which features vocals by David Sylvian – on a number that was one of his first great solo moments. A very cool late 60s spy soundtrack from Italian maestro Armando Trovajoli – possibly one of his most dynamic scores of the time, filled with a range of modes – from jazzy, to moody, to mellow! The main theme of the film has a leaping, soaring piano/horn line that's totally great – quite driving and catchy, with enough of a groove to make it alone worth seeking out – but other tracks are plenty wonderful too, and feature a nice array of jazzy passages mixed with sweeter strings, plus a few sparer, more contemplative moments that echo the theme in very subtle ways. The lovely Lara Saint Paul sings the theme song "The Touch Of A Kiss" – and other titles include "The Report Is Completed", "Just Pull The Trigger", "The Last Gift", "A Bank In Zurich", "The Cottage Over The River", "Unexpected Note", "A Forced Meeting", "Suddenly An Old Friend", "Tears & Spies", and "She Dangerous Stuff". A lost Burt Bacharach treasure – a bit later than classic vintage, but a wonderful album from the mature maestro – and sometimes overlooked, due to its status as a soundtrack! The work here is totally great – that mellow, easy-flowing style that Burt really perfected around the time of Living Together – served up here in a batch of sweet instrumental tracks, plus a few key vocal numbers with lyrics sung by Jackie DeShannon, Libby Titus, and Michael McDonald – all of whom slide down more into the Bacharach ethos than stand out as their usual selves – and we mean that in a good way! Maybe one of the most successful film scores ever penned by UK maestro Roy Budd – one done around the same time as his classic Get Carter soundtrack, but with a very different vibe! The film has a western setting, as you'd guess from the cover image – and Budd opens things up with a whole host of different styles in his bag – some the dramatic, driving material you'd expect – but others with groovier late 60s touches that come as a nice surprise, and which reference the different moods for certain characters in the film! The approach is nicely different from both Italian and American western soundtrack styles – and this CD brings together an expanded version of the score for the first time ever – with 16 mono tracks, 3 more stereo titles, a short interview with Roy, and even a piano demo of the main theme too. CD

Horns, harmonica, and more – all wrapped up beautifully in the hands of soundtrack maestro Francesco De Masi! The core music for Arizona Colt is done with these soaring brass parts that really recreate the scope of the scene – bursting forth in full, yet gentle modes that really stretch out for the sky – intercut with mellower, more isolated sounds on harmonica from Franco DeGemini or guitar from Alessandro Alessandroni! I Cantori Modern sing just a bit on the record – especially on two vocal versions of the theme, sung by Raoul – and the CD features a whopping 31 tracks in all, with great remastering – and titles that include "Gordon Guitar", "Agguato Al Passo", "Sentieri Misteriosi", "Arizona Ferito", "Attesa E Dolore", "Arizona Colt", "Jane E Arizona", and "Preludio Strip Tease E Fuga". A soundtrack that's every bit as sexy as you'd guess from the cover – composed by Gianni Marchetti, conducted by Stelvio Cipriani, and served up with all the groovy touches you'd expect from either maestro! The scoring mixes light strings with warmer keyboards, guitar, and bits of woodwinds – often slinky and floating, but sometimes coming across with a bit more punch – especially on a few cuts that have these very cool wordless vocals! There's plenty of elements of the erotic style that Cipriani would unfurl even more strongly in the 70s – but mixed with a range of more dynamic sounds as well, thanks to Marchetti. Titles include "Arioso Ma No Troppo", "Psicoamore Quartetto", "Il Segreto Di Una Diciottenne", and "Psicoamore" from the original album – plus 30 tracks from the score of the film! CD

Morricone also throws in a few waltz-like melodies, too – almost the sort of numbers you'd find in a Nino Rota score – but as the soundtrack moves on, things get noticeably darker, too – and move into a rich array of odd sounds and weird tones. CD features a huge amount of tracks issued for the first time ever – a total of 31 tracks that includes "Fox Astratto", "Caduta E Ripresa", "Shake Del Giudice", "Balletto Col Morto", "Meditazione Melodica", and "Fuga In Svizzera". A huge international hit for Morricone – quite a surprise, given the warmth and whimsy in the music – which is a real change from some of the maestro's darker moments of the 70s! The tunes often use light electric instrumentation in these really nice ways – playful, and certainly comedic – but with these occasional deeper touches that are definitely Morricone, too – especially in some of the slower moments that have this great interplay between woodwinds and keyboards. We're not sure why Ennio Morricone is making the "shush" sound at us on the cover – as the set's such a wonderful celebration of his music, it makes us want to cheer! The performance here is all new – and features Morricone conducting the Czech National Symphony in a selection of tunes from his classic film scores – in a celebration of his 60 years of giving the planet some of the most beautiful music ever written! The orchestrations are great, and really live up to the spirit of the songs – and there's a recording quality here that's different than some of the other live Morricone albums, which can sometimes flatten the music, and not have that sense of separation and isolation that make the maestro's compositions so great. Director Quentin Tarantino has drawn plenty of inspiration from the music of Ennio Morricone over the years – either using short passages of older Morricone music in his films, or evoking the substance and style of the maestro in the way he uses sounds from other sources too! So it's only fitting that this time around, the pair are finally brought together fully – as Morricone turns out one of his best soundtracks in years for Tarantino's Hateful Eight – a brooding, suspenseful tale that owes plenty to the western generation that first sprung Morricone to global fame! Yet as with most of Ennio's best work, the style here is something that goes far beyond expectation – orchestrations that take on a style completely their own – with instrumental elements that have stronger focus amidst the larger charts, and a sense of mood and color here that's completely sublime. The record is mostly music from Morricone – written for the film – and features a few passages of dialogue from the movie, plus just a few additional tracks by The White Stripes, Roy Orbison, and David Hess. Yet it's more than fair to think of this as a complete score by Morricone – very different than the usual compilation-style soundtracks we've had before from Tarantino. LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked Lalo Schifrin score for this later Dirty Harry film – but one that still shows the maestro very much at the top of his game! The instrumentation's changed a bit from before – a bit more 80s keyboards in place of 70s Rhodes – but Schifrin still brings in a great blend of subtle sounds, funky bits, and fuller orchestrations – setting eerie moods when needed, and punching things up with more action themes as the going gets tough! Some of the mellower moments are the most acoustic, and actually have a fragile, sensitive sound that's totally great – one that really creates a strong sort of tension alongside the more dynamic numbers on the album. An amazing soundtrack from German maestro Peter Thomas – even weirder and more electric than some of his famous 60s recordings! Thomas scored the music for a spooky 70s film about the possibility of aliens on earth – and did so with a bit more tension than some of his other records – mixing in some dark tones, weird sounds, and other odd elements amidst some more familiar space age-styled themes. Instrumentation often mixes conventional orchestrations with electronics and offbeat percussion – the latter of which brings an earthy, organic undercurrent that you might not expect, and which really sets the record apart from anything else at the time. A few key cuts have the trademark groovy feel you'd expect from Thomas – including the classic "Stars & Rockets" – and other titles include "Reminiscences Of The Future", "Popular Myth & The Destruction Of Sodom", "The Red Sea", "Gods From Strange Planets", "Returning To The Stars", "Rocket Science", and "Easter Island". A wonderful record from a time when John Barry was really perfecting his craft – taking all that amazing sense of sound he learned over the course of many James Bond soundtracks, and turning it towards territory he never could have touched years before! The vibe here is completely different than Bond, but equally mesmerizing – as Barry uses strings and woodwinds with the care of an Italian maestro, then flavors things with just a slight touch of historical elements – yet never in a way that dims the 70s sophistication of the recording. There's a sonic balance here that's mindblowing, and very different than just songs thrown out for a historical film. Titles include "Journey To England", "Black Night", "Escape With Bothwell", "Vivre Et Mourir", "But Not Through My Realm", "Mary At Chartley", and "March To The Castle". CD brings in a stunning 39 bonus tracks – material from the film, cues, and more – all with superb sound! CD

Very cool work from British TV maestro Barry Gray – one of the few cats who could ever make music for a show with puppets, and have it end up sounding this cool! Joe 90 is an offshoot of the famous Thunderbirds series of programs – and as with those, Gray comes up with some wonderful sounds that are in the best Brit sound library modes of the late 60s – touches of jazz, mixed with mod elements on upbeat tunes, and taken to some mellower moments in a few other spots – all handled with a wonderfully wide palette of sound! The set's an even bigger collection than the previous CD release of Joe 90 material – with 24 tracks in all – including two takes on the main theme, and material from episodes that include "Double Agent", "Talkdown", "Arctic Adventure", "Big Fish", "Hijacked", "Splashdown", and "The Race". A surprisingly beautiful score for a film that's about revenge – one that maybe elevates the whole proceedings past the George Kennedy performance on the screen – at that level that can always make a Morricone score for a forgotten film well worth seeking out! There's plenty of tension in the music – sounds that draw on some of the maestro's understanding of more atonal elements, yet mixed with other moments that show a slight sense of relief – orchestrations sliding back into more familiar formation – in a shifting balance that creates a nicely unsettling sound throughout the entire score! One of the more striking Ennio Morricone scores of the early 70s – a set that's probably less iconic than some of the rest – but in a very cool way! The set begins with a vocal number performed by Carmen Villani, then moves into music that drifts between the ethereal and funky – often with instrumentation that's a slight shift from the usual Morricone modes, yet still graced with all that sense of space, timing, and charm that the maestro can bring to his music! The music more than lives up to everything you love about Ennio Morricone, but there's a sense of execution that's a really good change too – on titles that include "Quasi Rock", "Informale V", "Archi", "Scale", "Resquiescant", "Topi", "L'Ultimo Uomo Di Sara", and "Informake VIII". A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! An overlooked later score from Ennio Morricone – one with a slightly modern approach to instrumentation, but much of the charm of his best work from the 70s! Unlike some of the other Morricone soundtracks from this period, this one's never too overblown – often done with a spare, subtle approach, and a fair bit of light instrumentation – including some of those sweet, bossa-influenced lines that we love so much from the earlier years of the maestro. There's a bit of later keyboard elements on some tracks, but overall much of the instrumentation feels just like the 70s – nice and warm at the right moments, and recorded with a carefully close feel that really helps the isolated elements stand out nicely. A really unusual soundtrack from Ennio Morricone – one that's from the start of the 80s, and which has some sweet electric touches used alongside some of his more familiar modes! There's a bit of funk at the start, which heralds some of the less conventional instrumentation for the maestro – yet tunes still then follow that sense of slowly unfolding, flowering melody that can make his work so great – all the classic Morricone modes we love so much, but given a nice twist as well! The change is a great one – especially as at this moment, Morricone was moving into much larger orchestrations for bigger global films – and the set also features a bit of vocals from Nora Orlandi, and work from Alessandro Alessandroni on one track too. A spooky score from Bruno Nicolai – one with some great instrumentation in the mix, as we've always come to expect from the maestro! The tracks here are all relatively short – really just mood-setters for scenes with Christopher Lee and Klaus Kinsky – but Nicolai does a wonderful job with the sound, and manages to pack a lot into a little with some stark, metallic guitar lines – echoing out almost like some offbeat harpsichord – with some of those weirdly displaced sonic qualities he learned from frequent musical partner, Ennio Morricone! That quality follows in some of the other instrumentation here – watery vibes, odd-tuned strings, and light woodwinds – all used in really wonderful ways, on titles that include "Strutture", "Sguardo", "Fremiti", "Incubo", "Magia", "Processo", and "Visionario". A later score from Italian maestro Riz Ortolani – best known for some of his blockbusters of the 60s, but equally well at home here on a set from the early 80s – one that has a fair bit of electric instrumentation served up in a range of playful grooves! As with many Italian comedies from the time, there's a very catchy upbeat theme – one that has some of the tightness of the disco years, but mixed with a nice sense of whimsy – and, importantly, balanced by some even nicer mellow cuts that have great electric piano lines, and some very nice wordless female vocals! The CD features 27 tracks in all – with a good sense of pacing and variety throughout. CD

Sexy genius from Armando Trovajoli – the undisputed master maestro of the 60s Italian comedy! Casanova 70 has a great little score that blends together jazz and lighter Italian styles – a great link between the straighter jazz modes used in early 60s films, and some of the groovier, more mod-oriented styles that were taking over the Italian scene in the later part of the decade! There's some especially nice use of electric harpsichord on the record – quick little lines that have a tinkling, shimmering feel – often set against fuller Hammond, and a warmly grooving sense of rhythm. Titles include "Blues For Casanova", "Sensual Jazz", "Casanova 70", "Striptease", "Dino's Blues", "700 Jazz", and "Rubacuori". Plus, this massive CD reissue features a total of 34 tracks – 26 of which weren't on the original album – and which make for a really fantastic package! CD
