Jerry GoldsmithGoldsmith At 20th Vol 2 – The Detective/Flim Flam Man ... CD
La La Land, 1967. New Copy ... $19.99
A pair of overlooked Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is The Detective – a soundtrack we've been trying to find for years – given the way the music works perfectly in the surprisingly dark film! Goldsmith uses lots of jazzy tones in his scoring – especially trumpet lines – which works wonderfully not just for the urban location of the narrative, but to underscore the really melancholy mood of the whole movie – one of those Bullitt-era cop stories that shows the overwhelming effect of crime upon the outlook of a detective. There's a few weird touches in the mix – some swirling, almost watery moments – and titles include "A New Love", "A Family Affair", "Beach Scene", "Joe", "Night Talk", "The Safe Cracker", and "The Ball Game". The Flim Flam Man was recorded right around the same time, but is quite different – more rural than urban, with American themes that come through in the use of harmonica, woodwinds, and a bit of banjo and guitar – almost a Copland-esque fantasy of the country, but with warmer touches that both belie the comedic nature of the film, and the sensitivity that Goldsmith can bring to any sort of setting. CD features 16 tracks from the film – including "Stolen Property", "A Little Inspiration", "The Flim Flam Man", "A Good Trick/No Rest For The Wicked", "Curley's Plan", and "The Waiting Game". CD

Jerry GoldsmithOutland ... LP
Warner, 1981. Near Mint- ... $6.99
One of Jerry Goldsmith's darker scores of the later years – a really spooky bit of music for this eerie sci-fi movie! Although set in space, the film's music almost has a horror feel – really close, claustrophobic, and tense – put together by Jerry with these brooding string passages that move along with kind of a plodding quality, almost magnetically drawing the narrative into a cycle of doom! Titles include "Spiders", "The Buy", "The Hunted", "The Hostage", and "Final Message". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Grusin, David Shire, Lalo Schifrin, & OthersQuinn Martin Collection Vol 1 – Cop & Detective Series (Barnaby Jones/Dan August/Most Wanted/Cannon) ... CD
La La Land, Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
A motherlode of cop and crime soundtracks from the 70s – none of which have ever been commercially released before! All the music here comes from the mighty holdings of Quinn Martin Productions – the wellspring of so many great hour-long TV detective shows in the 70s – often well-penned dramas that were really a cut above the usual! The company's approach was always pretty top-shelf – and that included the music, too – which was often scored in superb ways, especially considering that in the pre-DVD days, many of these shows would only get seen once or twice. There's a quality level here that matches most widely-circulated 70s cop soundtracks from the cinematic world – and many of the composers are of the same caliber, too – with material that includes 18 tracks for two Dan August episodes by Dave Grusin, 15 more tracks by Lalo Schifrin for an episode of Most Wanted, 15 tracks for Barnaby Jones by Jerry Goldsmith, 20 tracks for two episodes of Cannon by John Parker, and more material by Duane Tatro, Nelson Riddle, Patrick Williams, David Shire, and Bruce Broughton.
