✨✧ Jimmy Cliff & OthersHarder They Come ... CD
Island, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. (Reggae, Soundtracks) CD

In addition, you get another disc of bonus material, much of it recorded in the crucial years before the film's release, giving you a wonderful portrait of the Jamaican music scene at the time, a dozen and a half of the finest rocksteady and reggae jams of the day, including Desmond Dekker's "Israelites", The Ethiopians "Reggae Hit The Town", Dave & Ansel Collins "Double Barrel", Jimmy Cliff's "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah" and "Wonderful World, Beautiful People", The Maytals' "Do The Reggay" and "54-46 (That's My Number)", The Melodians "It's My Delight" and Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby". 30 tracks in all on this awesome 2 disc set, packaged up nicely with notes by Dave Katz, photos from the film and full lyrics and track notations! ✨✧ Electric Flag/Paul BeaverTrip – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Sidewalk, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the trippiest soundtracks of the 60s – a wonderful blend of psych tracks from The Electric Flag, and moogier electronic moments from the great Paul Beaver! The Flag are at their best here – playing tunes that move from short bursts of fuzz to longer jams – laid out with great work from Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites on guitars, Barry Goldberg on organ, and Buddy Miles on drums – with a nice sense of arrangement and juxtaposition that rivals Spirit's equally great soundtrack material for Model Shop. This one's more of an all-out rocker – although the moog balances things out nicely – and the whole thing's definitely a cut above the usual thrown-together exploitation soundtrack of the period. There's lots of little crazy cuts, and a long one called "Fine Jung Thing" – plus the titles "Gettin' Hard", "Peter Gets Off", "The Other Ed Norton", "Psyche Soap", and "Joint Passing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono pressing – a nice copy! Cover has a small cutout hole in the corner.)

✨✧ Vince GuaraldiCharlie Brown Thanksgiving ... CD
Fantasy/LMFP, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue issue of this jazzy Peanuts classic – music that's delighted ears for decades, yet never got the same sort of commercial release as Charlie Brown Christmas music! As with that work, the music here all comes from the genius of Vince Guaraldi – and given the early 70s recording of the tunes, Vince definitely has updated his style since the 60s – using Fender Rhodes at times, and even having an electric sensibility to his acoustic piano work too – a sense of spacing and timing that's totally great! The core combo features a young Tom Harrell on trumpet, plus Chuck Bennett on trombone, Seward McCain on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – a very cool jazzy group. Vince sings on the wonderful tune "Little Birdie", which has some larger arrangements – and other titles include "Is It James Or Charlie", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Charlie Brown Blues", "Peppermint Patty", "Linus & Lucy", and "Thanksgiving Interlude". This expanded release features lots of great alternates on the themes – and the tune "Clark & Guaraldi", and "Is It James Or Charlie (bonus mix with whistling)". (Jazz, Soundtracks) CD
