✨✧ Roberta FlackBustin Loose – Original Soundtrack ... LP
MCA, 1981. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Certainly one of the lesser sorts of soul soundtracks that you'll find, and an easily overlooked Roberta Flack record consisting of tracks for this low-budget comedy with Cicely Tyson and Richard Pryor. The music's mostly in an electric modern soul vein – even the instrumental bits – and arrangements are by Barry Miles, Marcus Miller, Buddy Williams, and Roberta herself – who also produced the album. Titles include "Love (Always Commands)", "Lovin You (Is Such An Easy Thing To Do)", "Rollin On", "Qual E Malindrinho", and "Hittin Me Where It Hurts". (Soul, Soundtracks) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

Hector ZazouReivax Au Bongo – Made To Measure Vol 2 ... CD
Made To Measure (Austria), 1986. Used ... $9.99
An incredibly beautiful record – one scored to accompany a "photo novel" included in the set! The work brings together vocals from Congolese singers and musicians Ray Lema, Kanda Bongo Man, and Bony Bikaye – plus a range of light strings, percussion, and electronics – all artfully composed with a haunting, ethereal quality that tells the story of the novel in sound. There's a fragile balance here that's really incredible – too far to one side, and the work would be horribly reductive; too far to the other, and it would be painfully arty. And yet there's also a sense of art-based optimism here that's really great – almost recalling the earnestness of early 20th century European movements, but done with a much more post-modern sensibility. Titles include "L'Embarcdere", "Le Bain Royal", "Chez Le Commandeur", "Le Passage De La Frontiere", "Chanson Bongolaise", "L'Apparition", and "Un Heros". (Global Grooves, Soundtracks) CD
(Out of print.)

Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky female pop from the Japanese scene of the 70s – served up in a mix of rock, pop, and disco styles! The music here has a bit more polish than some of the previous titles in the Queen Of Japanese Pops series – more studio 70s than the garagey styles heard on other collections – but the overall feel is equally trashy, and like before, comes with some really great packaging that's filled with vintage images! You might need to know Japanese to get the most out of the lyrics, but there's a charm here that's universal too – compellingly catchy girl pop, often presented with weird instrumental twists and turns, and a nice undercurrent of funk in some of the rhythms. 19 tracks in all – with all artists and titles listed in Japanese! (Funky Compilations, Soundtracks) CD
