It's hard to believe that anyone ever took the electronics of Giorgio Moroder seriously enough to think they'd be the right setting for an intensely dramatic thriller like this – but in the decade when Italian thrillers were doing the same thing, it's kind of easy to see. And if you think of this one as a dated American soundtrack, you'll be lost – but if you see it as some groovy bit of Italian sexy electronics from the 70s, you'll find that it's got some pretty nice moments, and would fit perfectly with some of the Cinevox material from the end of the 70s. Well, it's not Jaws – but it's still pretty darn groovy – a very cool set of tracks that features some long, lush orchestrations from the great John Barry – plus some sublime disco sounds from Donna Summer! The first half of the record features Barry's extended "Return To The Sea – 2033 AD" – a side-long track that really builds nicely, and has John finding some even more expressive modes than in other mid 70s soundtracks. Then side two really lets loose with the great "Theme From The Deep (Down Deep Inside)" by Donna Summer – a tune that's got this beautifully building groove that's almost like her best early cuts, ala "I Feel Love" – a great use of Summer's vocals on a nicely funky groove. The set also features a slower Donna Summer vocal take on the cut – billed as "A Love Song" – with these cool keyboard lines that feel like they're lifted from an Italian 70s soundtrack – and Barry also turns in his own instrumental version as well. A pretty tense score – especially for Lalo Schifrin, who we normally know for his groovier soundtracks! Lalo's working here in a mode that's quite like some of the best 70s Italian horror scores – lots of turgid orchestral passages moving slowly, with dramatic flourishes that are really great, and some breakout moments that are guaranteed to send chills down your spine! Quite evocative, and although not usually Schifrin's forte, a great score in the best tradition of the genre. The movie and record were both a bit over-pressed upon release, but they nonetheless stand as a great snapshot of the way that funky soul had taken over the clubs during the disco generation – giving showcase to a whole host of new young artists, and exposing lots of mainstream listeners to soul music at a level they wouldn't have touched a few years before! Donna Summer was one of Casablanca's big acts at the time – and she really dominates the record with her classic rendition of "Last Dance", plus tracks "With Your Love" and a disco remake of "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". One of the last great moments from The Village People – an album released in conjunction with their huge screen debut in the film Can't Stop The Music – a huge media blitz from their producer Jacques Morali – and a record that also marked the first film appearance of the young Bruce Jenner, and which opened with a sexy Valerie Perinne on roller skates! The title hit was the biggest number here – and in addition to "Can't Stop The Music", the group also reprise "YMCA", and perform "Liberation", "Magic Night", "I Love You To Death", and "Milkshake".
