Elmer Bernstein/Shorty Rogers & His GiantsMan With The Golden Arm – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Decca, 1955. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Elmer Bernstein wrote the score to Otto Preminger's chilling film version of Nelson Algren's book The Man With The Golden Arm – a sad tale of jazz, gambling, and heroin addiction on the streets of Chicago (not far from Dusty Groove, in fact!) – and in doing so, he came up with one of the first jazz soundtracks to really work strongly with a dramatic narrative. The film's striking theme is played in a number of variations, either with orchestral backing, or in small combo format by Shorty Rogers & His Giants, a crack west coast group that features work by Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, and Pete Candoli. The tracks work perfectly together as a suite of tracks, even without the images of the film – telling a tale of temptation, sadness, tragedy, and rebirth. Titles include "Clark Street", "Breakup", "The Fix", "Zosh", "Frankie Machine", and "Audition". Worth the price for the Saul Bass cover alone! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label Decca pressing with deep groove. Cover has some surface wear.)

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinStaccato ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great lost crime jazz soundtrack – penned by Elmer Bernstein in the style of some of his best work from the 50s! There's a real Man With The Golden Arm feel here – as the orchestra rises and falls in a mode matching the Staccato title – and solos break out with a fluid and brazen sort of feel – plenty of jazz to show the west coast origin of the recording! Players include Don Fagerquist and Pete Candoli on trumpets, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash and Dave Pell on saxes, John Williams on piano, and Barney Kessell on guitar. The show itself is pretty darn cool – and starred a young John Cassavetes as detective Johnny Staccato – a role that supposedly gave Cassavetes enough money to shoot the film Shadows in his free time! Great all the way through – with tracks that include "Staccato's Theme", "Thinking Of Baby", "Poi & Juice", "Deadly Game", "Night Mood", "Jazz At Waldo's", "Like Having Fun", and "MacDougal Street Special". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has a split top seam, half split bottom seam, surface wear & aging, name in pen on both sides.)

✨✧ Luciano Berio/Leonard Bernstein/Pierre BoulezFemale Prisoner ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Wild stuff – a soundtrack made up of a number of different avant classical pieces, designed to accompany the film The Female Prisoner. Boulez directs Webern's "Five Pieces For Orchestra OP 10", and Leonard Bernstein directs Mahler's "Third Movement from Symphony No 4". The best part, though, is side two – which features Berio's striking "Visage" – a classic magnetic tape work based on the vocals of Cathy Berberian and filled with nice electronics! ✨✧ Elmer BernsteinHeavy Metal – The Score ... LP
Full Moon/Elektra, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A mostly orchestral score for this early 80s, feature-length animated sci fi film – penned and conducted by the great Elmer Bernstein, with a depth that's surprising, considering the movie! Elmer shows he's a consummate professional here – as he avoids any temptation to make things cheesy or sexy to fit the film, and instead turns out a top-shelf orchestral score played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with some slight occasional voices at times. Makes Out", and "Barbarians". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinSweet Smell Of Success ... LP
Decca, 1957. Good ... Out Of Stock
The full orchestral version of the Sweet Smell Of Success soundtrack – but done in a style that's almost as jazzy and swinging as the small combo one! Elmer Bernstein's at the helm here – and the music's a wonderful pastiche of modes that's right up there with his sublime score for The Man With The Golden Arm – done in a similar blend of driving jazz, somber moments, and some slightly more raucous touches! As with that album, the players are all great – and soloists on the album include Pete Candoli, Ted Nash, and Shelly Manne – west coast players despite the New York setting of the film, and playing here with a fair bit of grit in their groove. Titles include "The Street", "Hot Dogs & Juice", "Toots Shor's Blues", "Nite Spot Rock", "Love Scene", and "Out Of Darkness". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinWalk On The Wild Side ... LP
Choreo/AVA, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Elmer Bernstein's best soundtracks of the 60s – written for this film set in the brothels of New Orleans in the 30s, with a mix of jazz and dramatic themes. The best cuts are the jazz-based ones – tunes that come across with more of a 60s groove than you'd expect, given the setting of the film, and which are played by a small combo. Other tracks are more serious – and titles include "Juke For Teresina", "Exit Kitty", "Hallie's Jazz", "Iron Rings", "Doll House", and "Walk On The Wild Side". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Elmer Bernstein/Vikki CarrSilencers ... LP
RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The groovy groovy soundtrack to the first Matt Helm film – starring Dean Martin as a 60s master of intrigue! Elmer Bernstein handled the soundtrack with a really great approach – jazz, swinging, and with plenty of mod 60s bits – very much in some of the same territory as Lalo Schifrin or Hugo Montenegro at the time! And equally great, the record also includes a few great vocal tracks by Vikki Carr – "The Silencers" and "Santiago" – both of which are very groovy numbers that swing with a wonderfully cheesy sort of sound! Other tracks are instrumentals, and titles include include "Tun Tzee", "Tina's Waltz", "Matt Helm's Blues", and "Early To Bed". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinThemes From General Electric Theater ... LP
Columbia, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from the great Elmer Bernstein – from a relatively unlikely source as well! The music here was all composed for the General Electric Theater TV show – a regular anthology program hosted by Ronald Reagan, with a shifting dramatic cast – but one that's scored by Bernstein with all the richness of his best film work of the time – orchestrations that are even more amazing when you consider they were only meant to be heard from the small speaker of a television, and usually just for one time only! The album brings together some of the best Bernstein compositions from a variety of different programs – but there's a surprisingly unified feel throughout, and titles include "Enchante", "Passionelle", "Lavender Waltz", "The Highland Lovers", "David's Love Song", "Progress", "Mariachi", and "L'Amour Tristesse". Franz WaxmanCrime In The Streets ... LP
Decca, 1956. Very Good+ ... $14.99 19.99
Hard to find soundtrack to this early Don Siegel film that starred John Cassavetes, Sal Mineo, and James Whitmore as a bunch of JD's. The score has a dramatic crime jazz sound, similar to Elmer Bernstein's work in the same vein – and the LP also includes Waxman's "Three Sketches for Jazz Orchestra", which features nice solo passages by the likes of Pete Candoli, Joe Mondragon, and Jack Dumont. A classic Decca score, and one that we never see! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing. Cover has a small top seam split, but is nice overall.)
