Sandro BrugnoliniL'Uomo Dagli Occhiali A Specchio (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Vroommm/Italian Golden Mondo (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99 About April 24, 2024 (delayed)
A rare television soundtrack from Italian jazzman Sandro Brugnolini – easily some of his most hard-hitting work, and a mighty cool record to boot! Brugnolini mixes small combo jazz and some darker orchestrations in a shifting palette of sounds from track to track – which means that some numbers are hard groovers, others have this brooding quality, and still others have this incredible tinkling piano that seems to float in the air – maybe the most gentle passages of the record, but also some of the most eerie too – especially in the way that Sandro mixes darkness and light with effortless ease! Most numbers are short, and work together beautifully – a very vivid record, even away from the images on the screen. Titles include "Aggressione", "Tallonato", "La Notte Muore", "Colluttazione", "Quasi Un Sogno", "Incidente Provocato", and "Tempus Fugit". (Soundtracks, Sound Library) CD

Sandro Brugnolini/CarniniBeat Drammatico, Underground, Pop Elettronic (with bonus CD) ... LP
Fonit/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $30.99 34.99
Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". ✨✧ Frank HatchettSensational ... LP
Telephone Explosion (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of cuts with an unlikely history – as most of these numbers originally came out on dance instruction records, but stand alone very nicely on their own! Frank Hatchett's records were issued in small amounts to an equally small and focused audience – but as with the famous Gus Giordano records from the generation before, they used all sorts of cool funk, jazz, and soul elements in the mix – sometimes more down to earth styles, sometimes a bit more electro or boogie-oriented – which means that these cuts have some surprising street and club appeal too! The original albums had a succession of short cuts in random order, but this very cool package brings together all the best cuts from those sets in one very nice compilation – with titles that include "We Supply", "A Message From Kenya", "Malibu Nites", "Music Is The Answer", "Which Way Is Up", "Dance Crazy", "Holly Rock", "Just Dance", "Break Out", "Wishing On A Star", "Sam's Tune", "6/8", "and "For The Lover In You". ✨✧ Tonio RubioRhythms ... LP
Tele Music/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record that really lives up to the promise of its title – and one that delivers not just in the world of funky rhythms, but Latin modes as well! There's some great percussion on the cuts at the bottom – so that even if there's some wah wah guitar or sweet electric keyboards, there might be touches of Latin funk at times – all with a sound that's a lot heavier and hard-hitting than some other soundtrack work on the Telemusic label! Plus, there's some longer tracks too – not just short sound cues, but well-spun instrumentals that stretch out nicely – on cuts that include "Bass In Action", "Royal Shuffle", "Pepper Rock", "Rock 73", and "Latin Leitmotiv". ✨✧ Eric SidaySounds Of Now ... LP
Dual Planet (Australia), 1960s/1970s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sounds of now, circa yesterday – a very cool collection of 60s and 70s electronic work from Eric Siday – presented in these great short sound cues! The tracks are pretty brief, but very cool in that respect – and almost work like little electronic poems, or light whimsical melodies – which are sometimes mixed with spookier bits too. The work fits well as themes or commercials – but often has that undercurrent of darkness that we like in Siday's music too. Titles include "Logo Gogo", "Bubbling Under", "Automobile", "Kitchen Concerto", "Christmassy", "Bell Tune", "Helicopter Eyeview", "Winter Sports", "Jazz Cellar", and "Record Club". ✨✧ Giuliano SorginiScappo Per Cantare ... LP
Fama/Four Flies (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sound library album that's a real cut above – a set that maybe feels more like a film score overall, given the richness of the music – yet one that's also got the sense of variety you'd love in a great library record too! Giuliano Sorgini makes all these moments that sparkle with warmth and delight – maybe the sonic complexity of Morricone at times, balanced with the tunefulness of Armando Trovajoli at his best – as shifting instrumentation pushes things way past just simple short grooves, and delivers a wonderfully rich and often groovy palette of sounds in the process! There's definitely some funky nuggets here, next to other tunes that delight in their sense of color and timing – titles that include "Concentrazione", "Con Amore", "Genocidio", "Fendente", "Per Cantare", "Fantocci Vivi", "Mordente", "Calle Veneziana", and "Desolazione". That gun on the cover is a great hint at the action within – as UK sound library genius Alan Tew comes up with a whole host of hip cop/crime grooves for the set! Tracks are short, but done brilliantly – with a blend of keyboards and electric basslines amidst warmer jazzy instrumentation – all on tracks that offer up plenty of funk in all the right ways, with killer cuts that make for a fantastic record all the way through! Heck, even the mellower moments are funky too – and titles include Tew's classic "Money Runner", plus "Eyes", "Drama Backcloth", "Scene Change", "The Rub", "Surveillance", "Night Watch", "Master Plan", "The Fence", "Final Statement", and "White Elephant Walk". Piero UmilianiTra Scienza E Fantascienza ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1976. Used ... $39.99
A wonderful sound library set from the great Piero Umiliani – and a record that's filled with some of his coolest electronics ever! The feel of the record is very much in keeping with the image on the cover – kind of sci fi, but kind of playful too – a wonderful blend of keyboards and moogy bits, often played with a cool little groove – but one that's laidback enough to recall Umiliani's best soundtrack music! Tunes are relatively short – between one and four minutes in length – but really have a great sense of variety and imagination – at a level that goes way beyond some of the overdone repetition you might find in other albums of this nature. Really great all the way through – with cuts that include "Futuristic Jam", "Killer Robot", "Soft Key", "Bric Brac", "Soundmaker Blues", "Gadget", "Danza Galattica", and "Jingle No 1". This entry in the very cool PV Tapes series features the full soundtrack music for a TV series titled De Komst Van Joachim Stiller – work that opens up in ways that are even more expansive than some of the other releases in the series! The tracks are short, in a cue-type style – but contain some beautifully evocative instrumental moments, shifting through themes handled on flute, saxophone, organ, and even trombone – plus one cool tune that's listed as having a "bad saxophone" too! The LP features 33 numbers over the course of the album – and the bonus 7" single includes both carillon and orchestral versions of the main theme – but stretched out into versions that are each more than 7 minutes long! There's lots of wild electronics here, and plenty of other great sounds too – served up in a host of very cool tracks from a range of short animated features from Poland – not kiddie cartoon music, but work that's often got a very spare and spacey sort of vibe! The set's awash in keyboard sounds and other electronic modes – sometimes playful, but often times a bit more open, and almost experimental – lots of moogy touches on the 70s work, and some more digital-styled keyboards as the 80s move in – presented at a level that's right up there with some of the best East European sound library material we love from the Gad label! The set features work from "Defekt" by Marek Wilczynski, "Knock Down" and "Studium" by Zenono Kowalowski, "Ptak" and "Palacz Guzla" by Zbigniew Lampart, "Idylla" by Tadeusz Kocyba, and "Zielony Dywersant" by Boguslaw Pasternak. ✨✧ Rene CostyExpectancy – Collected Library Music ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really wonderful sounds from an overlooked sound library genius – and an artist who's also a great one to turn to if you want to hear the groovier side of the spectrum too! Rene Costy recorded these tracks on the 70s scene in Belgium – which is why he's probably not as well-exposed as sound library creators from the UK, France, and Italy – but that obscurity is also what makes some of these tracks so great – as the groovier numbers come across with a freshly bubbling feel that's very positive, and has the warmth of some of our favorite French soundtrack tunes from the 70s – and the darker tracks have an unusually sharp approach, but somehow while still sounding tuneful! Keyboards are the dominant instrument – and CD one features "grooves", which make up the biggest part of the collection – followed by a shorter array of darker tracks on the "scapes" of CD two. Titles include "Danger", "Ever Faithfull", "Cue Joe", "Automatisme", "Scrabble", "Longuest Night", "Country Dance", "From Time To Time", "Barbara's Dream", "Machinery", "Anxiety", and "Phantasmes". The second installment in the Videoclub – and like the first, a set of tracks that definitely lives up to the vintage action styles promised on the cover! The tracks are heavy on influences from classic crime, cop, and kung fu soundtracks – served up as shorter instrumental tracks that also make a nice nod to 70s sound library styles too – all with production that's totally great, and right on the money – so that the music never sounds too contemporary at all, and really has the spirit of analog funk from back in the day! BTF/Italian Golden Mondo (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99 About April 24, 2024 (delayed)
Fuzzy funk from the Italian scene of the early 70s – a really landmark record that ties together all the best elements happening in the soundtrack, sound library, and psych scene at the time! The group features two guitars and lots of organ and keyboards from the leader – really stretching out on the side-long title track "Under Pompelmo", which is a massive jam, but one that never trips out too much to stop being funky – a surprisingly great groove that stays right in the pocket for all of its 16 minutes and 50 seconds! The flipside features shorter tracks, but equally great – all like some lost sound library funk numbers of the period, but served up by a small combo with more focus on guitar and weird production styles – on titles that include "Honda", "When I See You", "Echoes From Canyon", and "To Rebound". A record from the more electronic years of the sound library scene – yet one that's also got a nicely sensitive side too, in a way that really lives up to its title! Both artists get plenty of space to serve up their songs – mostly shorter numbers in variations for most tracks – heavy on keyboards, but with flute, cello, and acoustic guitar as well – so that there's almost a pastoral approach to the album – very different than other Colorsound library releases of the time, and most mid 80s sound library work in general. Titles include "Emotional Tension", "Moonset", "Sentimental View", "Personal Mood", "Soft Thoughts", "In The Garden", "Pastoral Walk", and "Sundown". LP, Vinyl record album

GAD (Poland), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy ... $14.99 23.99
Really cool music for a bunch of short, animated cartoons – all of them from a single studio in Poland, and done with these sublime sounds that really move past the familiar! These aren't always the whimsical melodies you'd hear in a Warner Brothers cartoon – and there's elements of modern composition mixed with really creative instrumentation – all served up on a set of over 40 short tracks that move between two and a half minutes to almost just thirty seconds – a wonderful portrait in sound as the music moves between the decades! The feel of the set is almost similar to some of the offbeat soundtrack material reissued by the Trunk label over the years – and the set features work from composers who include Krzystof Komeda, Tadeusz Kocyba, Waldemar Kazanecki, Jerzy Abratowski, Bogumit Pasterkak, Zenon Kowalowski, Janusz Mentel, Antoni Mleczko, and others. A totally cool little set, and one that takes us back to the kind of commercials they used to play at the drive-in theaters between two different movies in a long double-feature! The tracks here are all short, playful little tunes with plenty of 60s elements – sometimes jazzy, sometimes groovy – extolling the virtues of popcorn, pizza, Pepsi, and anything else you might want to whet your whistle or tame your stomach during the course of a long cinematic experience! As you'd guess from Something Wild, a lot of great research went into this project – and there's some surprising artists in the lineup, doing work you never would have imagined. Christian ZyssetCosmogonie ... LP
Mondiophone/Endless Happiness (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 31.99
A 70s sound library record, but one that's also very different than most – as Christian Zysset put together the whole thing more as a jazz record with long, extended tracks – instead of the more typical batch of shorter themes and songs! The set's got a largeish group who stay together throughout – trumpets, saxes, and trombones that soar together, but have breakout solos too – some with an edge that almost hints at avant jazz, yet which still has the rest of the ensemble moving forward in a rich array of tones and colors! The project is similar to some of those excellent and overlooked French ensemble experiments from the early 70s – often issued on smaller indie labels, like this – and with a really great play between the farther reaches of individual identities, and the more cohesive soul of the band. Titles include four long themes – "Theme 1 Medium Pop", "Theme 2 Medium Jazz", "Theme 3 Medium Free Jazz", and "Theme 4 Lento Misterioso". LP, Vinyl record album
